CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Proposed rules that would allow more modern dust monitors in U.S. coal mines may be delayed by President Barack Obama's order requiring federal agencies to halt pending regulations while his administration reviews them.

Mine Safety and Health Administration spokeswoman Amy Louviere says the U.S. Department of Labor is working to identify rules affected by the directive and take necessary action.

MSHA proposed the coal dust monitor rule Jan. 16, four days before Obama took office. The proposal would set new criteria for government regulators to use when approving personal dust monitors for coal mines.

The industry now relies on 1970s vintage technology, which the government wants to replace.

Coal dust is a big issue in mining because it can cause black lung disease.

well this is crazy idea because every miner who sets foot underground, knows about these circimstances. As well as myself, the dust is down more now than ever. If they want this law to happen then a lot of people will lose their jobs due big cut backs in the mining industry which also means higher unemployment west virginia strives on coal....

Not excactly related, but I noticed the picture of the coal train and wondered why there aren't regulations controlling the coal dust produced by train haulage? I live near a train track and at times the dust will darken the sky along the track of a fast moving coal train. People who live along the rail lines have to breathe that stuff!
