MINFORD, Ohio (WSAZ) -- For tens of thousands all over our region, Friday marked day four without power.

Meanwhile, line and tree crews by the hundreds continued to work nearly nonstop. Parts of Scioto County, Ohio, are among the hardest hit areas.

We visited one of the hardest hit areas today, with the smell of kerosene and hum of generators resonating from too many hills and hollows.

Minford resident Lisa Hone said since a big tree fell on her car and across a major utility pole Wednesday, her freezing family has been without power or heat. She doesn't know if the power lines on the ground are alive, and she said no one will tell her a thing.

"The cable company came up and they called AEP because of the downed lines," she said. "Nobody else has been here."

AEP crews said they know about Hone's problems and will get to them as soon as possible. They said all of the downed wires should be treated as live. AEP said more than 30 line and tree crews are working through dozens of Portsmouth area trouble spots, using the Scioto County Fairgrounds as an equipment storage area and home base.

Without line power since Tuesday, a well-prepared Jim Lynd said his gas generator and gas fireplace are working just fine, thanks to the recent purchase of an emergency generator.

"I got the generator for my wife for Christmas," he said. "Everybody laughed until the first ice storm hit. Then, they didn't laugh so much."

Into day four of kerosene heat and alternative power, Steve Muncy, owner at the Divide Carryout, said keeping a business up and running on a generator has its challenges.

"I've got to cool the coolers, then they will stay that way for a while and I can use the lights," he said.

AEP officials said the plan is to have power restored in and around Scioto County by midnight Saturday. Red Cross shelters are open Friday night and Saturday at Valley Elementary in Lucasville and at the old Waverly High School.

I understand the time it takes for all this complex REPAIR from this ice storm on these electric lines and poles-what I don't understand, is why I don't SEE anyone(or any crews) in our general area-repairing such lines-tomorrow will be a week since we lost power(heat, warmth, bathing, laundry, hot meal)-for us, having a generator is the only saving grace- besides our HEAVENLY FATHER! I think that it is sad that I just heard that AFTER A WEEK they are NOW starting to send out Natl. Guard(door to door) to finally Check on people--Better LATE than never? Really Sad!

We have been without electric since Tuesday at 3 a.m., we have stopped and spoken to many AEP workers and they all said that we would be restored by Midnight on Saturday, Saturday came and went, no power and no one working on the lines that were down in our area! We have spoken to a few of the men from out of town that has been ACTUALLY working the 16 hour days and they did not understand why it has taken this long to restore power to the people in our neighborhood. We live 3 minutes from town. We were finally restored by workers that were from out of town and was given a 2 hour time frame of restoration and not days, We'd like to thank the Pike electric worker from grayson, ky that took the time to stop and give us that time frame and wasn't a jerk about it, even though you had not been home and you were tired! God bless you and your family and I hope that you are able to go to your family and your warm and safe! Thank you for making our families night brighter, your all ANGELS!!!!!
