MADISON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The same day Massey energy released plans to cut its workforce, employee pay and benefits, the company idled the Black Castle Mine in Boone County.
Massey Spokesperson Jeff Gillenwater tells WSAZ.com the mine went on "idle status" Thursday night as a result of market conditions.
A skeleton crew is currently keeping the mine going. Gillenwater says the temporary shutdown affects 300 people.
Massey Energy Executives plan to take a look at the overall mine plan next week. The goal is to continue to bring small groups of workers back as demand increases.
ORIGINAL STORY: Thursday
MADISON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Massey Energy Company is hoping that pay and benefit reductions, along with some reductions in its workforce will help the company's overall outlook.
"Our goal is to keep as many people as possible employed," said Massey spokesperson Jeff Gillenwater.
Gillenwater confirms that some pink slips are being handed out, but can't give an exact number at this time. He says they are reviewing staffing across the company and have reduced some hours, adding that the executive management team and the board of directors will also be affected.
Gillenwater says these moves are a response to the current economic market, a response to the EPA and the uncertainty that surrounds permits with the Corps of Engineers and mountaintop removal.

Does any one know is they ever plan to hire back the original 65 miners that were laid off in April? They were told when coal demand increased they would be hiring more back. They took back 240 miners, but the other guys are still out of a job.
Has anyone heard anything about Massey opening a new Medical Clinic in Beckley?
Has any one followed up with the employees of Black Castle Mining since they reopend? How there pay and hours were cut, how they were screwed out of all the years they have put in with this company, how they were told there original hire date still remained, until someone needed something and now you have to be an employee for six months after being with them for ten years. (But you were just hired back in). This is the worst company (Massey) you could work for if you are looking for someone to care about you as a person or employee!!!!!
