IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ)--An Ironton man granted a new trial following his murder conviction has now pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Police say that in the July 2005, William Cooper went into a home in Lawrence County, Ohio and shot two men. Scott Marcum died, and Orlan Harper Jr. was wounded.

Later that year, A jury found Cooper guilty of murder and felonious assault.

The Ohio District Court of Appeals recently ruled the state did present substantial evidence, but the jury instructions in the case were not complete. As a result, they overturned the conviction and ordered a new trial.

Yesterday, Copper pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 13 year in prison. Cooper will have to serve at least 10 before he can be released.

you can google state of ohio vs. william cooper. it plainly says bill admitted shoting both men it tells why he was given a new trial it was a mistake by the judge you can quit saying bill didn't shoot them he admitted it read his statement. i'm not here to argue with you but you don't need to be spreading rumors either. for anyone else reading please just do a little research before you defend this guy he admitted everything.

This is to anonymous.....It was not murder it was self defense! scott had a 25 caliber gun and was going to shoot bill! The evidence is there in medical reports that both of them was shot with a 25 not a 38 caliber which is what Bill had!but our court ignored it! Scott and J.R. was not at the place bill was at they came from over 100 yards away to get involved! It is a tradgedy but they were going to kill Bill! Obviously you don't know the facts. You should review the court documents like I have! This did not take place at someones home it was in the middle of a township road.
