LAWRENCE COUNTY, Oh (WSAZ) -- It's no surprise these days when you hear about criminals taking a catalytic converter or stealing copper pipes, but recently two thieves stole a fire truck, burned it and sold the parts for scrap.

Those who volunteer their time to protect their communities are fed up and want extra measures taken.

Gene Cox says he couldn't believe it when the Decatur Township Volunteer Fire Department's water tank truck was stolen.

Sheriff's deputies found the burned out fire truck at a scrap yard in Waverly, Ohio and charged Jeremy Basham and Courtney Fisher with the crime.

Cox says that's not the first time his department has been targeted.

“They probably got 15 dollars worth of scrap and it cost us 142 dollars each time to replace,” Cox said.

Recently someone took off with copper lids to the septic tanks at the department.

Chief Cox has gotten several signatures on a petition he plans to give to the prosecutor and sheriff with hopes they can crack down harder on criminals who target fire departments.

Thomas Cox says townships need to have constables on duty to help enforce the law.

They are crimes these men say are hurting the communities they serve.

The nearby Elizabeth Township fire department also got hit by thieves. They stole 200 gallons of diesel fuel.

Both Jeremy Basham and Courtney Fisher are out on bond for the fire truck theft. Their preliminary hearings are set for next month in Lawrence County.

Hey Some1, not doing nothing means that they WILL do something. Thanks for dropping the bar just a little bit lower.

I have known both suspects for several years and I am shocked that either of them would do something so stupid. To my knowledge both have always held good paying jobs and have been hard workers, I cannot help but wonder what could have gone so wrong in both their lives to make them humiliate themselves as well as their families. Maybe there is more to this story or maybe they just were never as smart as I gave them credit for being!

when people like this get caught they should get the most punishment that the law will provide, plus while serving thier time they should be made to work at the volenteer departments to make up for the loss that they have caused.its tricke like this that could cost someone thier lives

They are "OUT ON BOND". That is just wonderful! Wonder what they will do while they are waiting for trial? Take up knitting or cross-stiching? Maybe they will cuddle up with a good book that they've been putting off to read.

Why dont they pass a law that these recycling or "scrap" plants make people that scrap something have to submit their information and a copy of their ID....Referring back to when those vases were stolen from a cemetery in Charleston, how can someone turn those in, and the people at the scrap yard not know they were stolen and call the police?

Put them to work to make them pay for the fire truck. How desperate does a person have to be to stoop so low as these two criminals and the criminals that have struck the other places. These crimes will only increase any need for additional taxes. I would keep these guys in jail and make them work off the money instead of everyone else having to pay for their crims.

HOW FAR WILL PEOPLE GO? THIS IS TRULY SICK! IF THE GAS PRICES WEREN'T SOO HIGH MAYBE THIS WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED, IT IS MAKING EVERYONE IRRITABLE.

Why don't they post deputies at he scrap yards and hold them responsible for receiving stolen property. This would cut down on a lot of thieving in this area.
