SOUTH POINT, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Sharing the highways with giant tractor-trailers is a necessity since they're the backbone of our nation's industry.

Their sheer size and weight, though, can make them a potential risk and a little scary. That's why a local campaign is making sure truckers are following the rules.

Ohio Highway State Patrol Trooper Steve Circle specializes in motor-carrier safety and flags down trucks for a living. On Wednesday, he was part of Operation Safe Driver, which included random truck checks.

Rick Logan is used to such stops, having worked and driven for Logan Packing and Cavalier Meats for nearly 20 years. He understands that safety is most important for commercial vehicles.

In the last three years, the Ohio State Highway Patrol cited commercial motor vehicle drivers more than 4,000 times for not having proper driving credentials. Officers also have cited more than 17,000 truck drivers for log book violations.

Who do you contact to report vilolators? I know a man that signs his own medical release forms. He is severe diabectic and his Dr, refuses to sign off on them, so he signs his own. He won't take no medication. He is a real danger to society

I think that not all blame be aimed at truckers only, I have seen other drivers cut off the big trucks slow down in front of them etc, why not get the people who don't show respect for the KINGS OF THE ROAD!!

the DOT in WV would not respond to our calls 2 years in a row and guyan river rd and the road I live on were destroyed by trucks moving stone and dirt . they came out later and put some asphalt patchs on the roads but thats not to useful when we are headed into winter .A legislator later told me when commerce or construction of new business is concerned the state looks the other way .

i think there should be public education to all drivers, not just big rig drivers. actuslly truck drivers do get regular training sessions unlike the general driving population. if the public was more aware of real safety, there would be less accidents! why do drivers of big trucks always get blamed for causing accidents??

I think that they should start patroling every where.. not just Ohio. Here in Louisa, Ky. you can not got down Rt. 23 without seeing a tractor-trailer going at least 80 mph. And those trucks cant stop on a dime anyways! Heaven forbid something pull out in front of them!

They should try patrolling out here in Otway. Just the other day my daughter was getting off the school bus and two truck drivers about wrecked one went off the road and the other came in the lane head on with the bus. They was speeding and that has been a huge problem out here.
