ATHENS, Ohio (WSAZ) --Ohio University Police Department Chief Mike Martinsen is quitting.

Martinsen is leaving at the end of September to pursue a job in the Cincinnati area. He says the opportunity will allow him to spend more time with family.

Martinsen says the department is stronger and healthier now than when he arrived two years ago

During this time, Martinsen has formalized OU's training and investigative team operations, increased the officer training budget and hired six new police officers to improve campus safety.

OU officials say there will be a national search to find a replacement.
An interim police chief will be named before Martinsen leaves.
