PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) – A Sciotoville man is sentenced to serve 15 years to life for murder. Police say he's confessed in two other cases as well.
Back in February, the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office and the Portsmouth Police Department announced the arrest of 44-year old Darryl L. Walters of Sciotoville.
They say Walters confessed to killing Aleshia Frazee, Melinda Powell, and Tamara Smith. The three murders happened between 2001 & 2004.
Thursday, in an Adams County, Ohio courtroom, Walters was sentenced for Powell’s murder. As part of his plea deal he will be eligible for parole after 15 years.
Later that day Walters was taken to Scioto County, but prosecutors tell WSAZ.com they were unable to reach a plea deal with him for the murders of Frazee and Smith. As a result, prosecutors plan to take those 2 murder cases to trial.
In February, Scioto County Sheriff Marti Donini said DNA evidence linked Walters to Frazee’s murder.
The body of the 19-year old from Portsmouth was found dumped along Old Gallia Pike in Franklin Furnace on October 28, 2001.
Donini says while investigators were interviewing Walters about the Frazee murder, he confessed to the murder of Melinda Powell. Her body was discovered in Adams County, Ohio, in July 2004.
During that interview, Walters was serving an 18 month sentence for DUI in Indiana.
During a second interview with sheriff investigators, Donini says Walters confessed to killing Frazee and the murder of Tamara Smith. Smith's body was found in Portsmouth in October 2004.
