COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio wants federal permission to use a strong weapon against a growing problem of bedbugs.

The state Department of Agriculture has asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for an emergency exemption so Propoxur may be used to battle bedbugs in Ohio homes.

Propoxur is an insecticide currently used in commercial buildings, on crops and in pet flea and tick collars.

An answer from the EPA could take months.

At an Ohio Agriculture Department bedbug summit Tuesday, Paul Wenning with the Franklin County Board of Health said the pests are becoming overwhelming.

He estimated that 70 percent of hotels in Franklin County, which includes Columbus, have had to deal with bedbug infestations.

Cincinnati and Cleveland also have reported bedbug problems.

I can't believe how ignorant people are about this problem. It can't just be solved by throwing away beds and sending international people home. This isn't just a problem in hotels and motels these bugs can follow you anywhere. They can travel so easily from your luggage at the airport to sitting in the waiting room at your doctors office. It's a pricey thing to get rid of them completely. To say that people are being cheap by not throwing stuff away to solve this problem is stupid. If it was that easy I'm sure a Company would rather pay to replace all there belongings then pay Thousands of dollars to treat one room for bed bugs.

Bedbugs can live years inside building walls, the cost per room for treatment would be more than they can rent the room for a month. unless you have been involved in this problem you have no idea how hard it is.
