COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- American Municipal Power has scrapped plans to build a coal-fired power plant in southern Ohio because of soaring construction costs.

The 1,000-megawatt coal plant would have provided electricity to parts of Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia.

Company officials say the projected cost of building the plant had jumped from $3.3 billion to $4 billion.

The plant had been criticized by environmentalist groups since it was announced six years ago.

The company says that opposition had nothing to do with its decision. American Municipal Power is looking into the development of a natural gas-fired power plant instead.

The Natural Resources Defense Council says Natural gas plants emit about half the carbon dioxide as a coal plant.

If only there was just one person with enough gray matter to stop the blame game and the name calling. It's no wonder you all feel so hopeless and helpless. You all sound like a bunch of grade schoolers at recess crying about not being picked to play Red Rover with everyone else. This is exactly why we lose battles over health care and the need to bring good jobs to our area. NO ONE can state a fact or generate a meaningful argument. It's no suprise why we are now owned by China. Our ability to find someone who can put a sentence together without cursing, calling names or just plain being stupid is without doubt seriously hendered.

Your right we dont need an epa what we need is for the chemical companies and the oil companies and the coal companies to be working and dumping their waste into the rivers and lakes and all over the land it would help the job market when people would die off at the age of 45 from cancers caused from the waste then they could hire new people sounds like you really thought that thru moron
