UPDATE SATURDAY @ 9:30PM:
From the Associated Press:
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A state Department of Environmental Protection official says weather that trapped emissions from American Electric Power's John Amos plant close to the ground may explain the smelly, blue haze that blanketed parts of the Kanawha Valley.

DEP's John Benedict said Saturday that tests shows sulphur oxide and nitrous oxide levels rose about the time people noticed the haze Friday. Both are byproducts of burning coal. Benedict says the levels didn't exceed health standards.

Benedict says DEP suspects weather trapped the emissions lower than usual, creating the haze.

AEP spokesman Phil Moye says nothing says the power plant caused the haze. But if it contributed, Moye says the company wants to make sure it doesn't happen again.

UPDATE SATURDAY @ 2:08PM:
The blue haze Friday appears to have been captured by NASA satellites. Click on the image to the left to see a larger image of the Kanawha Valley at 1:35pm.

Click here to view a wider image. (Note: 500k image may take some time to load, depending on internet connection). The Kanawha Valley is marked with a red box.

UPDATE SATURDAY @ 1:14PM:
Here is the latest information released by Metro 911
The blue haze and chlorine smell that hung over the region Friday has
lifted, and test results indicate pollutants normally in the air coupled
with atmospheric conditions caused the problem, officials said.

State emergency and air quality officials were monitoring air samples
until 1 a.m. today, while Kanawha County emergency officials staffed
its emergency operations center.

Callers in the region began calling Metro 911 in the early afternoon
Friday, reporting a blue haze with a strong smell of chlorine. Metro 911
received no reports of acute distress as a result of the situation.

Officials continue to monitor the situation.

UPDATE SATURDAY @ 9:22AM:
Saturday morning Metro 911 dispatchers told WSAZ that tests overnight on that mysterious blue haze came back negative.

Dispatchers said crews with the state's emergency response team found nothing dangerous in the air in Kanawha County.

UPDATE @ 7:58PM:
Dale Petry, the emergency services director for Kanawha County, says emergency response teams are setting up at different places around the county to monitor the haze & smell. He's hoping special equipment on the response trucks will be able to help identify what is causing it.

Petry also confirms that county emergency officials went up in a helicopter Friday with DEP officials to see if the source of the haze can be pinpointed -- but they didn't find anything conclusive.

According to Petry, firefighters went to chemical plants in the valley and set up monitoring systems -- and no traces of any leaks were detected.

Right now: Petry says there is almost no wind, causing the cloud to stay put. He adds, though, that it is moving north slightly toward Sissonville.

UPDATE @ 4:40PM:
This information is from Metro 911:
AS OF THIS TIME...METRO 911 HAS NOT RECEIVED ANY REPORTS OF PEOPLE EXPERIENCING ACUTE DISTRESS FROM CONTACT WITH THIS UNKNOWN SUBSTANCE.

METRO 911 STILL HAS NOT BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE SOURCE OR ORIGIN...AND NO ONE HAS NOTIFIED METRO 911 THAT THEY HAVE HAD A LEAK OR RELEASE.

AS SUCH...EMERGENCY OFFICIALS ARE NOT ADVISING A FORMAL SHELTER IN PLACE...BUT IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO VOLUNTARILY PROLONG EXPOSURE BECAUSE THE SUBSTANCE IS STILL UNKNOWN.

Metro 911 is advising people in Kanawha County to go indoors if you are affected by the mysterious blue haze and chlorine smell.

Commissioner Kent Carper says people in Kanawha County should stay indoors if they feel affected by the haze -- and call 911 if you are feeling sick. He adds that the haze has been reported as far west as Putnam County.

Carper initially told WSAZ that a shelter in place was issued, but has since said that is not the case. He says the fact that the haze is a mystery is what is prompting the county to issue a warning.

Carper says Dow reported a tanker car leaking earlier in the day, but he said officials don't know if it's connected with the blue haze.

The Kanawha County EOC has been activated, according to Carper, who is also the President of the Kanawha County Metro 911 board.

WIND REPORT FROM TONY CAVALIER:
There is virtually no wind and that will continue this eve.

That means there will be a higher concentration of the gas/haze over smaller area than if we had a wind blowing the haze affecting a larger area with a smaller concentration.

What is likely happening, the gas is warmer than the air is rising and spreading outward due a process known as diffusion.

What is diffusion? The spreading out of a gas in all directions regardless of wind speed, direction.

Dispatchers earlier told us they've checked with Dow and Bayer, and those companies say they've had no leaks.

A caller to WSAZ says she saw a blue cloud headed toward her house just off Corridor G.

Dale Petry, Kanawha County Emergency Services Director says crews are trying to track the source of the haze -- and that it's dissipating as quickly as it appeared. Petry says he doesn't know what the chemical is, but says it has a chlorine-like smell.

Anyone wanting additional information about the mystery haze should call (304) 746-8749.

Stay with WSAZ.com for more information.

Here is the news release issued by Metro 911 at 3:48pm:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Metro 911 reports haze and chlorine smell over Charleston and South Charleston

Officials advise if you are in distress, stay inside and do not hesitate to call 911 for help

Metro 911 of Kanawha County is reporting a haze and strong chlorine smell in the Charleston and South Charleston area.

Metro 911 has received dozens of calls from the public, starting around 1:15 p.m. today and continuing at this hour.

Industrial sources of hazardous materials are required to notify Metro 911 when they have a leak or release of such product. At this time, Metro 911 has not received any notification. Metro 911 and emergency managers have contacted all chemical facilities in the region and none report any lost product.

As a result, emergency officials do not know the source of the smell or what the product is or its origin. Following established protocols, emergency officials have activated the Emergency Operations Center and are tracking the location of the calls.

The public is being advised that if you are in any form of distress, stay inside and do not hesitate to call 911 for help. Extra ambulances are on standby as a precaution.

The EOC will stand open to assess and monitor this situation until officials are assured there is no danger.

For more information, call EOC personnel at 746-8743.

Underground chemicals meet coal veins, reaction occurs and you have ignition..check for underground heat, coal fired byproducts, fault lines around the area, maybe underground fire(s) going on?

I really don't know what you all are experiencing, but it sounds like it has to do with chemicals! Lots of companies dump thier nasty chemicals anywhere they possibly can...I would look into it...

A BLUE HAZE IN CHARLESTON. HOW STRANGE. THERE IS NO WAY IT WAS CHEMICAL RELATED. CHARLESTON HAS CLEAN AIR. AS CLEAN AS ANY LARGE CITY ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

Anyone who believes this nonsense are stupid. How gullible are we? Pollution and weather conditions? yeah, right. How often is it cold in WV? I'm sure the cold DID hold down the pollution. But I really don't think it was just "normal air pollution." If it was, how come nothing like that has ever happened before? Every winter we have freezing conditions. Is our air dirtier now than last winter? or the winter before that? Does "normal" pollution smell and taste like the bottom of a swimming pool? If anybody believes this, give me a shout..... I have an iceberg in the Gulf of Mexico to sell you. This is what will happen: DEP will act like it was no big deal, telling everybody some BS excuse, when they know the truth. John Amos pays them off. We the people inhale toxins for years until we die of cancer. Everybody wins, huh? The DEP is bought and paid for by coal, chemical, and anybody else with enough money to buy a government agency. There's a REAL answer out there, and it's not this one..

Concerning the blue hazing of last Friday, I was surprised nobody seemed to remember the odor. As soon as I smelled it I was reminded of childhood trips to the Kanawha Valley. This was during the 50's and 60's when this area was truly 'chemical valley'. The odor was always here every visit. As more plants closed the odor lifted and now only returns when atmospheric conditions are just right. It appeared the only one who knew that was Tony Cavalier!

Don't blame AEP. All of you are equally responsible for this, as am I. Stop driving everywhere and take a bike. Ask yourself if where you are driving to is absolutely necessary. Start recycling. Buy more energy efficient products and stop using so much electricity. It is much easier to point your fingers than take responsiblity for your actions, trust me I know. Seriously, think about what you are doing before it is too late.

to MO: you should by all means see a dr. this could affect your health in a serious way! People don't realize how serious chemical poisoning is. I know from experience, my husband was poisoned by a chemical.

Posted by: OH Friend on Jan 28, 2008 at 11:20 AM
Yes there seems to be a BIG problem don't forget AEP and EPA work together. There are reports that show that this is a health problem there is a ASTDR report out there some where that shows the health risk that the Cheshire residents informed of. I do believe that a few years ago the residents of Cheshire stated that this problem of "Blue Haze" would soon come to neighboring power plants the people in the affected areas need to do researh and keep voiceing your concerns. Blue Haze is a Health concern!

THEY REALLY BELIEVE THAT WE ARE IDIOTS! GOD FORBID ANY PLANT OR INDIVIDUAL WITH THE AUTHORITY TO TELL THE TRUTH TELL IT! WHY WOULDN'T THEY YOU ASK????? WE THE PEOPLE MIGHT DEMAND MONEY FOR COMPENSATION! I HAVE NEVER BEEN AS SICK AS OFTEN AS I HAVE SINCE I MOVED TO THIS PLACE IN 1990! THEY COULD ALEAST TREAT US WITH SOME DIGNITY! NOT EVERYONE HERE BELEIVES WHAT THEY ARE TOLD! SHAME ON ALL OF YOU THAT ARE IN CHARGE!

Look at the picture with the source of the haze and then zoom in on the area in google earth. Looks like the amos plant to me!!

Posted by: Anon on Jan 28, 2008 at 07:54 AM
If the haze was picked up by NASA satellites and the micrograms per cubic meter were over 100 at 6:PM on friday, This may have some type of long term effect on our health. This should be a wakeup call to the city officials. Also, let us be more organized in letting the citizens know whether they should go out or not when these unidentified "leaks" occur. We can all learn from this. Parents should have a prediscussed plan with their children/family on what to do if something serious should occur in chemical valley.

Posted by: doug d on Jan 27, 2008 at 11:19 PM
smog or chemtrails, rather are not really that dangerous, just annoying . i cant believe people are acting this way about chemtrails, we always had these!!!

Posted by: From Ohio on Jan 27, 2008 at 10:54 PM
Hey WV, pay attention to the people from Ohio who have experienced the “blue haze!” Too bad AEP didn't own up sooner. I knew immediately what the "blue haze" was as soon as I heard about it. It's a documented phenomenon of pollution that caused AEP to buy the ENTIRE village of Cheshire, Ohio so that they could get the villagers to shut up about all the health effects they were feeling after being exposed to the "blue plume" practically everyday. Yes, you'll be seeing more of this "plume," and yes you should be angry and demanding something be done about it. Please realize how important it is to read about what happened in Cheshire: http://www.cheshiretransaction.com/town/sub/cngtown.html#blue

The Blue Haze was caused by the burning of a portable toilet. Driving by the I-64 Weigh Station I saw a portable toilet on fire. The blue water in the toilet was turned to steam which then started to rise into the atmosphere. And with the way the wind blows west to east....it headed to Charleston.........makes more sense that some of the hair brained reasons that are listed on here........

Less than 3 weeks ago, same place - same thing. How hard is this to figure out?? On (January 7) Monday, Metro 911 dispatchers received several calls about a bad odor and strange BLUE CLOUD in the area of the Bayer CropScience plant.. Bayer spokesman Tom Dover said plant employees reported a haze at the plant this week, but no chemical leak or other aspect of the plant's production could be found to explain the haze..Officials for the state Department of Environmental Protection cited the Institute plant for three air pollution violations for incidents on Nov. 16, Dec. 20 and Dec. 28. http://www.dailymail.com/News/200801090266 And your own NASA satellite image above, shows the smoke billowing out at the BCS location. What else do you need? Bayer says 'we're oblivious' and you believe them.

First it was the "tampering of the county's communication system this week, now the "mysterious cloud" event which put a lot of people into a panic on Friday. Is this a botched terrorist trial-run? Two concidence in one week, makes one suspicious. Where is Homeland Security? WSAZ is the only station to take it seriously and hear from the people. I hope our officials get to the bottom of this and come up with a new "Shelter in Place" protocol of warning the public. Some stations called for Shelter in Place others including Metro 911 said, it's not necessary, yet? Think we should have sheltered until the it was determined air quality was safe. This was not determined till very late in the day and the plume of smoke was released ten hours earlier. The public trusts Metro 911 to make sound, cautionary decisions for them. The yes and no to Shelter in Place was a fiasco Friday, especially for the school system.

It was an inversion layer for sure, I know I was hoping for cover ups and conspiracy, but it's actually very simple, I suggest you research it a little on the net. Thing about it is, there are so many chemicals in the area, along with cars, it was horrid for the senses. I just hope something else was not under the inversion layer. I've seen many inversion layers before, just not quite this low...

Isn't the Institute plant right dead in the center of the area with the gas?! The plant will continue to say that no one complains about this stuff. People CALL THE PLANTS when you smell it. So when they're in the newspapers saying "no one complained", you'll know how much they lie. My friend in Institute drove to the plant's gate and reported it herself because they blow you off on the phone. This is why I got the heck outta Institute. It's gonna be Bhopal all over again.

I was all over Charleston yesterday while this haze was drifting through, but never saw it. I called my house to check my voice mail, & had a 911 call about it. I then heard 97.5 DJs talking about it. I think when people know their is something in the air, they become over dramatic. I did have a weird taste in my mouth, & the back of my throat was burning a bit. I don't know if my symptoms were a result of the haze or not. I just hope it didn't cause any major problems for anyone.

Has anyone called the EPA about this? They're the only ones who could really find out what's wrong. Everyone needs to hurry up and do it. The more people swamp them with calls the better. It's clear this situation is far worse than the news is reporting. They need to interview individuals instead of only gaining information from a few hush-hush sources. The EPA HAS to be involved, everyone, please make numbers count.

Mo, you should definitely call 911 like they said if it's that severe. Since nobody's calling 911 nobody thinks it's serious, everyone needs to speak up and take care of themselves! This will cause permanent damage if you keep allowing yourself to be exposed! If this is "normal pollutants in the air" being concentrated by "atmospheric conditions" as they say... then this should be a wake-up call for everyone. Stricter air pollution standards need to be in place, if we're pumping that much into the air on a normal basis! The Bush administration has done nothing to remedy the situation and in fact fights efforts to do so. We've all got to make sure we demand higher air standards for the safety of ourselves, our children, and our planet itself!

When this happened, teachers in South Charleston where concerned and called a shelter-in-place. This caused countywide panic and i think action should be taken to prevent this from happening again.

Omg I am so scared now, yesterday we was sitting at our kids bus stop and the blue cloud came through the valley. We went into town to the Hunting & Fishing show and came home, I woke up at 2am this morning coughing and with a very upset stomach. I have been up since then and very restless. This morning I was vomiting, and thought I was having a stroke or a heart attack my heart was fluttering im only 27 yrs old. I thought maybe it was from where I was tired so I just got on the computer and tried to relax. About 2 hrs ago my boyfriend was going through the house and coughing nothing hard just like he normally coughs all of the sudden he fell in the floor he passed out. I just red the www.opcw.org site from below and those are the symptons of Cynaide poisoning! What should I do should we go to the hospital even though the symptoms have ceased except for my upset stomach? Someone please respond

1.1 What is HCCPD? HCCPD is a light, lemon-yellow liquid that has a sharp, musty odor. It easily turns from a liquid to a vapor when exposed to air. The vapor looks like a blue haze. HCCPD is a manufactured chemical and does not occur naturally in the environment. It is made by adding chlorine to cyclopentadiene, or by removing chlorine from octachlorocyclopentane. HCCPD is used to make a group of related pesticides. Only two of these pesticides, endosulfan and pentac, are currently registered for use in the United States. Most of the HCCPD in the environment results from releases during its production and disposal. Most people can smell HCCPD in the air at 30 parts HCCPD per billion (ppb) parts of air. Most people can smell it in water when it is present at 1.4 ppb. If HCCPD touches your skin, it can enter your body. Based on studies in animals, when either pure HCCPD or a solution with 10% HCCPD in mineral oil comes in contact with your skin, a sore can form.

My eyes burn when I drive through Nitro. My throat burns when I drive through Coal Grove & the hair on the back of my neck stands up! (Even with the windows up!) The other day when the wind was blowing, I could hardly stand the stench from Ashland refinery. Your government lies to you perpetually. The media is so often just a parrothead to what information is given them. The EPA said the air in New York was safe to breathe right after 911. Now thousands including front line heroes suffer from resperitory illnesses. Who's covering THAT story? In So. Calif. during most of the winter months, the smog is not as visible, but is STILL THERE! In the summer when you can see it, it certainly is not blue, and does not have a chlorine type odor. It's a nice brown color. By the way, "Why are their fingernails growing from my elbows?" might just be the next question you ask your personal toxicologist.

Sorry, I don't buy it. The John Amos plant huh? Since when does combustion of coal create a heavier than air, chlorine smelling, blue gas? That was a chemical leak, someone's just not owning up to it.

http://www.opcw.org/resp/html/hcn.html Just out of curiosity, exactly what test were performed and came back negative? Hydrogen Cyanide has light blue gas. It also would account for chlorine like smell and respiratory problems and heart palpatations. Could your reporters be a little more specific?

People really need to stop making fun of this whole situation and stop acting like idiots! This is a serious thing! If you actually live around Charleston like I do, then you're probably pretty scared, confused, and upset. So for those of you who don't live around Charleston, WV or you're just making a big joke out of this, just stop. Also, for those of you who live in another county in WV thats not bordering Kanawha county, I understand that you're worried about your safety, but it seems like that's all you're worried about is YOU. Show a little compassion for kids like me and adults too who actually have to deal with this and live in it. I'm only 13 years old and I'm more mature than some of the adults posting all this stupid stuff instead of taking this dangerous situation seriously!

Posted by: Michelle on Jan 26, 2008 at 11:35 AM
Okay, so if they know it's harmless, they must have some idea of its chemical coposition, right? Why aren't they releasing any information whatsoever if it's all so harmless? I can't stop coughing, and my six-year-old is having trouble breathing. We just got in from the emergency room. Harmless? Coincedence? Kanawha County health officials apparently think so.

Results are negative?! Maybe if they would have gotten out there to sample the air when they should have, (hours earlier) and not waited till the evening the results would have been more conclusive. There were THOUSANDS of us who were in that yesterday. I guess we were all imagining that? This is yet another cover-up for sure! Please continue to ask the questions to those in power to get an answer for us. They should at least have a plan in place for the next time. It will happen again. It is just a question of when. Luckily it sounds as if nobody was killed this time. It is very discouraging that whoever did this has gotten away with it. It sets a bad example for how easy a terrorist could have gotten away with doing the same thing, and killed us all. Maybe Danny Jones should use some of that TAX money he is charging us weekly to get some chemical detection kits. I thought that extra TAX was to protect us was it not? I want my money back!

But my brother in law has asthma and he had trouble breathing today while working outside in the Charleston area (but ok now). I also opened my door after the kanawha county school called with the warning and within minutes had a rapid heart beat & chest pain for hours after. I feel much better now and that probley was just a weird couincidence. Kinda weird though. I don't exactly have heart problems.

Theory about the blue haze : it's been so cold the last few days, the atmosphere is so cold, exhaust gases from all the traffic cannot rise immediately like warmed or superheated air will,so as the hot gases are expelled from the exhaust instead of rising they(the exhaust gases) try to freeze, and just begin to linger as if in limbo, too warm to fall and yet so warm trying to freeze and not being able to rise! or another theory may be :so many people have had their catalytic converters stolen it's all just raw emissions in which case yep,you guessed it~IT'S SMOG! just a theoretical look from a scientific point of view ! WSAZ~U ROCK!

Everyone needs to quit acting like this is some sort of a big conspiracy. It is nothing more than a chemical spill or new pollution filters at the power plant. For one, no one is reporting getting sick from this. Two, if this is some government plot, why would the president be at the greenbrier? If it was something they were doing, he would be way over in Asia somewhere. Three, chemical spills happen all the time, and it can happen anywhere. Four, why would ANYONE attack Charleston WV now? It's not like were supplying the army with all of its gun powder like in WWII, what would the government or terrorists gain from killing people in one of the poorest states in the country?

Installing leading-edge technology can sometimes create unexpected consequences. This occurred at AEPs Gavin Plant, near Cheshire, Ohio, after SCR equipment was installed to reduce NOx emissions in 2002. The SCR equipment reduced the NOx emissions but also created bluish plumes (sulfur trioxide) that touched down in Cheshire and caused considerable community upset. We took immediate steps to mitigate the blue plume and fixed the problem within months. We developed a process that we intend to use to control emissions at other power plants equipped with both FGDs and SCRs. The Gavin Plant experience was a painful and costly lesson, but resulted in a solution to prevent the same consequences at other plants. ~ AEP http://www.aep.com/citizenship/crreport/environmentalperformance/committedtocleanair.asp

The government is not going to take care of you. You must take care of yourself and your children. Quit waiting for 'them' to tell you and get out of there. It will finally disperse, but that just means it will be in a larger area. But you will think it's ok since you can't see it anymore. Again, why are you still there? Do not leave your health up to 'them'.

I hope the Feds get called in and figure out what this is! In the meantime if I were there I'd be getting the hell out of there until I knew what it was/and or that it would not do any major harm to me or mine. Do not be lulled into a false sense of security. There are installations of government "underground installations" all over WVA. Some they admit to and some they do not. You never know what might happen at/to one of these bases. Best to err on the side of EXTRME caution, in my opinion. Just know that some of us are hoping and praying for your safety there. But don't assume whatever it may be is totally benign. It may be and again maybe not. Better safe than sorry... Good Luck!!

The break down in communication is ridiculous. We spend a lot of $$$$ on Emergency Prepardness, and the hospitals haven't even been officially notified of what really is going on. Hospitals have had to contact other hospitals to find out what is going on in Kanawha Co. Pitiful communication from EOC and Metro. Then the news stations are reporting conflicting information as well. WSAZ issues Shelter in Place information. WCHS issues No Shelter in Place information. Get it together Metro. Somebody should be able to test the air and know what chemical everyone is being exposed to. Figure out WHAT it is and do something about it! Get information out to the public about what they are being exposed too. At this point, it doesn't matter WHERE it came from..fact is it is everywhere now.

Why has WSAZ not mentioned the Power Plant like the newspaper has reported on their site? They seem to have it all figured out. What is the truth? Excerpts from http://wvgazette.com/News/200801250495: A chemical odor and hazy cloud that moved across the Kanawha Valley Friday afternoon appears to have come from a combination of coal-fired power plant emissions, state Department of Environmental Protection investigators believe. Those investigators narrowed the source of the haze to an area "in and around" American Electric Power's John Amos Power Plant, across the Kanawha River from Poca, Benedict said. Moye said company officials believe it is more likely that a "unique water condition" led to the odor and the haze. AEP officials are cooperating with the DEP investigation, Moye said.

safety my butt, try living in Nitro all your life, we have chemical leaks all the time , the majority of the time you dont even know about it till its over! i remember as a child waking up and going outside in the morning and everything was covered in a black soot, this wasnt a one time thing, it was an everyday thing!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 25, 2008 at 06:55 PM
around 9am this morning while driving over the nitro interstate bridge, i noticed the same thing over the john amos plant, not the usual foggy stuff from john amos, then while driving from nitro to south charleston at 3pm i noticed the same thing but thined out more, it seemed to be more concentrated over the patrick street bridge and dow area. it smells like burnt tires and chlorine. Being raised in nitro , im surprised i can still smell at all, i probally grow in the dar when the lights go out ! gotta love the chemical valley. as a child one of my memories is sheltering in place in nitro elm, duct taping the windows and doors, 300 students crammed in a hall way, what a treasured memory!

please stop beating the drum for HCCPD. If you spent the time to read the entire article you would notice that quantities greater than 1 lb are under mandatory federal reporting when accaidentally released. If this was released and they just didnt notice it because it was a train car, its way too late to matter anyway. (Not to mention they dont know a whole lot about the toxic affects of that chemical anyway)

All of the posters that are questioning if different plants had been checked or called. DUH!!!!! I think that all the years that we have had chemicals in the valley and surrounding areas, that the emergency workers have learned to call the plants, producers, haulers and storage facilities. Having worked at DOW and in the Emergency response field for the past 27 years, I have attended alot of training in these years as have the emergency folks in the Kanawha Valley. We have some of the best trained responders around and would stack them up against anyone. Trust me your safety is their upmost concern. Let them do their jobs.

Our system is broken! The problem is that there was not a huge loss of life for this to get the attention it should. You would think that with this many toxic chemicals in the valley that we would have some resources at hand to let us know just what this is, and not rely on the chemical company's. Then again we probably would not want to know what is in the air on a daily basis. Wonder what the deal will be this time to keep this one quiet? Are we going to get more jobs out of the blue again like what happened with Bayer?

Just found this online... HEXACHLOROCYCLOPENTADIENE (HCCPD)- HCCPD is a light, lemon-yellow liquid that has a sharp, musty odor. It easily turns from a liquid to a vapor when exposed to air. The vapor looks like a blue haze. This chemical is also called percyclopentadiene, hexachloropentadiene, and hex. Some of its former trade names, still listed in chemical reference documents, are C-56, Graphlox, and HRS 1655. HCCPD is a manufactured chemical and does not occur naturally in the environment. It is made by adding chlorine to cyclopentadiene, or by removing chlorine from octachlorocyclopentane. HCCPD is used to make a group of related pesticides (aldrin, chlordane, dieldrin, endosulfan, endrin, heptachlor, isodrin, mirex, and pentac).

Posted by: No-Joke on Jan 25, 2008 at 05:24 PM
Our system is broken. How can someone not know what this is, or where this is coming from? What this means is that if a chemical plant does not tell someone they had a leak, and what it is then we will never find out, or know what it is until it is to late. Lets hope this brings some attention to our broken system before there is a big loss of life. There are enough toxic chemicals here that you would THINK we would have resources to tell us what is in our air. Maybe we are better off not knowing, and maybe that is why we do not have one?

Just heard a msg from the Emergency Broadcast System on talk radio. It said that metro 911 hasn't received any reports of anyone experiencing acute distress from the blue haze. They don't know the source yet, but don't suggest prolonged exposure. After the millions of dollars spent on emergency preparedness since 9/11/01 the best we get is "no one has died yet, so we guess it's ok"...whats next...are they going to start giving underground coal miners canaries again? Makes you wonder what will happen if a real emergency occurs.

Posted by: K. on Jan 25, 2008 at 05:08 PM
I won't lie, I'm concerned. The fact that we live in "Chemical Valley" is one thing, but you'd think we'd be able to be ontop of what happens better than we are. The fact of the matter is, there's a blue haze and an odor. People are calling in with affects to their health due to this. And nobody knows what it is or where it's coming from? I live in Scott Depot, but don't really see anything. Still, I have many friends in the city who have been texting me saying they're feeling dizzy when they go outside. I'd really like some definite answers to this contamination. If it's causing health problems, it seems to me that more should be done than just "standard precautionaries." Albeit, that's just my opinion. I don't think a state of panic is necessary, but I do think those residing within the area of the haze should stick to indoor activities today. I think the Shelter in Place is a good idea since nobody knows what the Hell is going on. Again, my opinion.

Posted by: Richard on Jan 25, 2008 at 05:07 PM
What kind of place do we live in when the amazing County or State Government can't take an air sample. It is time we move instead of our lives being at risk and all they can say is, "we don't know what it is or where it came from and if you feel ill call us".

Then about 5 minutes later, they told us that it was over and that it wasn't dangerous! They then dismissed us to go home and told us it was completely safe! Who are they trying to fool?! When I walked outside I smelled a chlorine smell and had trouble breathing right away but it proabably affected me faster because I have asthma. My friends and I are scared because even the adults are freaking out and I'm scared to breathe! I need some clarity of what's really going on and thank you WSAZ for notifying me through the tv because I thought it was safe because I thought that the school wouldnt lie to us and want to hurt us!! Posted by: B. Mis. on Jan 25, 2008 at 04:32 PM
The haze is most probably made of a compound by the name of hexachlorocypentadine (HCCPD), which is most often used in pesticides. It is highly reactive-- especially when exposed to the air-- thus, dissipating into a vapor and causing the blue haze that it is most often identified with outside of its yellow colour as a liquid. As the name suggests, it contains chlorine in its molecules, as a result, causing this smell in the valley.

I agree with the other comments--Why did the schools let the children go? Has the valley Emergency Response failed.

it is hard for me to believe that no-one knows where this haze and smell is coming from.. How bad does it have to get before we can find out what is going on

Posted by: Jessica on Jan 25, 2008 at 04:16 PM
I really wish they'd find out what this chemical really is. My family is really worried and quite frankly so am I. The better this is found out, the better we will all be!

Duh! My husband works at Dow Chemical/Bayer. He hasn't heard a thing! And why haven't the other stations reported a shelter in place? Quit blaming the schools in Kanawha for what WSAZ has done.

If a tanker leaked earlier in the day wouldnt you think they would have thought it was causing the blue haze, if no one else is saying they have a leak?

Posted by: cindy on Jan 25, 2008 at 04:04 PM
I noticed the haze over Charleston this morning at 8:00 a.m.

Posted by: HMM on Jan 25, 2008 at 04:04 PM
does any one think it will reach the logan/lincoln county area or should it evaporate in the air before then??

Posted by: Marilyn on Jan 25, 2008 at 04:03 PM
This situation is being poorly handled. WSAZ is reporting a shelter in place, but WCHS' website states there is NOT a shelter in place. No one seems to know what the substance is, so wouldn't a sheter in place be advisable?

Posted by: Kevin on Jan 25, 2008 at 04:03 PM
Why did it take so long for the EMS service to broadcast. We noticed the leak 2 hours before it was activated. We even notified the authorities.

Posted by: Josh on Jan 25, 2008 at 04:03 PM
I dont think they know what is going on is there a shelter in place, or not we need to know things like this.....wsaz is reporting 1 wchs is not which 1 is it

Posted by: melody on Jan 25, 2008 at 04:03 PM
when i left work downtown at 2:45, the smell was horrid and the air thick and blueish in appearance. its even worse at south hills.thanks for finally getting the word out.

The AG doesn't cover issues such as this...Darrel McGraw is consumer/business related such as if you have a complaint on a product or service. I've used him enough to know haha.

4pm my son just drove from cross lanes to charleston on 64. He stopped at Sport Mart. He said the traffic is flowing fine. THere is a slight clorine smell but it is not to bad.

I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A SHELTER IN PLACE AND THE SCHOOLS ARE LETTING THE KIDS OUT AND TOLD THEM IF THEY WALK HOME THEY NEED TO HURRY ! WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE DO WE HAVE RUNNING THE SCHOOL BOARD THAT THEY PUT OUR CHILDREN IN DANGER THAT IS JUST MIND BLOWING AND SOMEONE NEEDS TO TAKE NOTICE OF THIS ASAP

Posted by: Steve on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:57 PM
Chlorine clouds are yellow. Leaks associated with amine production produce a blue haze and odor. Prolonged exposure causes blurred vision, halos and damage to the corneas.

Posted by: duke on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:56 PM
do you think this could cause a virus and possibly infect and or kill people

Posted by: j on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:54 PM
I heard that it's lifted. Is it lifted?

Posted by: Frank on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:53 PM
What a farce! Shelter in place and all of the kids are standing outside John Adams waiting on the school buses, breathing it all in. Has anybody bothered to tell these folks? I don't expect any of the chemical companies to own up to this leak. Where's Darrell McGraw?

Posted by: Greg on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:53 PM
I called this smell into 911 at 1:15. Why so late in getting this information out to the public.

Posted by: dave on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:52 PM
Isn't this how a lot of Stephen King books start out? Mysterious fog, mysterious odor.... Then people start turning into zombies....... If anybody tries to eat my brains, I'm heading to Ohio......

Posted by: Tom on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:45 PM
Could it be blue "hot" air -- the legislature is in session!

Posted by: dh on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:45 PM
Isn't it odd that the news & newspaper are reporting a shelter in place, but 911 says there is not a shelter in place. The schools were dismissed with my child walking home from school.I sure do feel safe.

Posted by: Sam on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:44 PM
I Just called the National Weather Service and Kanawha county 911. They are not issuing a Shelter in Place. In fact it is a common occurance when it is cold in the chemical valley. There is a chlorine smell, but you are asked to stay inside if you are feeling ill. Again, Channel 3 is listening to scanner traffic and not getting the facts right. They are using this "emergency" to scare the people with their "breaking News." Channel 13 and Channel 8 are reporting it as a concern and to use precaution. You can get home to your families and pets. Just be careful.

Posted by: Keith on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:40 PM
Thanks for being the only website with info on this haze. I have family there and I am concerned.

Posted by: Jon on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:35 PM
I can smell it in the air in Poca, and up the river towards St. Albans I can see the Haze!

It is 3:22pm, friday and I can smell a pretty strong chlorine odor up here in South Hills at the top of Bridge Road here in the City of Charleston

Posted by: Jennifer on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:22 PM
We cain't see anything down towards South Charleston from here in town. Just heard that there is a shelter in place from nitro to So Charleston. How am I gonna get home to the dogs and the kids?

Posted by: MICHELLE on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:21 PM
IF YOU START TO HAVE PROBLEMS BREATHING CALL 911. FROM WHAT i HAVE HEARD THERE IS A TANKER CAR THAT IS LEAKING A CHEMICAL AT DOW.

Posted by: Susan on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:19 PM
Just heard that Haz Mat is on their way to Dow for an apparent tanker truck leak.

Posted by: Natalie on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:19 PM
My friend Donna is scared. She said that she knows that this is some sort of cover up and that there is a bad leak. Someone Help us.

Posted by: Steve on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:13 PM
It is not dissipating here in the downtown area as stated in the story. Please stay on this story. Often stuff like this just gets swept under the rug.

Posted by: Russ on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:12 PM
Has anyone checked into the possibility that the chlorine plant may have leaked near the stamping plant in SC. In addition, What about the possibility that they are not going to tell anyone that there is a leak - in order to avoid a panic

Posted by: anybody on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:07 PM
anybody checked Clearon yet?

Posted by: Gas on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:06 PM
I'm in the middle of Charleston and its not dissapating, its getting thicker. The 911 center better take another look.

bad smell in area not sure whats going smells like a oxidizer

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:01 PM
WQBE has stated that there is a tanker car at DOW that is leaking in South Charleston. There is No Word yet on what the Chemical is.

Posted by: Jim on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:00 PM
How about checking with Clearon in So. Charleston. Their products are bleach and chlorine. Maybe a problem exists with one of their baghouses or packaging at the Ordinance Center.

Posted by: B on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:59 PM
It's kind of weird that this is being reported now. This morining, on my way into work, (7:15am) as I drove past Institute/Dunbar, I could smell something and then noticed a haze. At first I thought the haze was fog, but I could still see the sunrise.

Posted by: Destiny on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:56 PM
Has anyone found out what the blue haze is yet? I wonder why the fire departments have been placed on caution.

Posted by: Pamala on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:53 PM
We are definitely getting a chlorine smell here on campus and we can see a haze when we look outside onto the campus.

Posted by: Russ on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:52 PM
You are doing a good job, about posting it at least, however doesn't it seem prudent to break in the TV and let ppl know?

Posted by: Elizabeth on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:52 PM
Its 2:49 PM up on the hill off of Kanawha Turnpike and the haze and smell are thick and strong. If you go outside for any length of time your eyes and throat start to burn. So theres definately something in the air...

Posted by: Eric on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:50 PM
My wife has called me with the exact same comments on a blue cloud covering the Oakwood Rd. area, at Overbrook. She smelled the same smell and has obvious worry.

Posted by: Viewer on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:46 PM
It is in Downtown Charleston as well. I was out in it for a few minutes. Smells like Chlorine, it burns the back of your throat, and you sure can taste it like Drew says. Let's hope they can find the cause, and fix it. Thanks for reporting it! Now I know I am not crazy.

Posted by: Tamara Fugate on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:44 PM
was one of the callers who called about the blue haze. Unfortunately, I don’t know where Mr. Petry is, but the blue haze is NOT dissipating as quickly as it appears and neither is the smell. I have been sitting in my office here off of Oakwood Road for over thirty minutes, and I still see it and smell it. Also, my chest, head, and throat are starting to hurt. Just thought you should know. Thanks!

Posted by: Tammy on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:41 PM
It smells like chlorine in nitro.

Posted by: Burning Eyes on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:39 PM
This is similar to the Saint Albans odor we had a few weeks ago that we never got an explanation for, once again, my eyes are burning at work. I hope everyone stays safe until further notice.

Posted by: Ian on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:38 PM
I can see it all over downtown....

WELCOME TO CHEMICAL VALLEY !! This is one reason all teh Snow goes around us., if you watch the radar you will see usually on weak systems it makes a complete circle around the Kanawha Valley, they say it isn't but HELLO !!! This goes to prove they don't know everything !!

Posted by: Badness on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:36 PM
Hey how about checking Dupont. They are up the river you know.

Posted by: Anne on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:27 PM
Thank you for being the only website to have information about the blue haze. I also watched it come up the Valley and at first thought it was a fire until I stuck my head out the door. Keep up the great work!

Posted by: drew on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:24 PM
Over at Fort Hill / Weberwood area, this smell started at least 1 1/2 hrs ago. The air has a strong, immediately noticable metallic taste, and smells of chlorine. SCFD responded to my call of no official word, but there are other callers. Blue fog, almost like a morning mist, throughout our valley. Not sure if it is related.

Posted by: dave on Jan 25, 2008 at 02:12 PM
It smells like chlorine in south charleston
