UPDATE: 8/28/08
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- With the return of Marshall University students and the start of a new school year comes new questions about the status of the Leah Hickman murder case. The Marshall student was found murdered in her Huntington apartment last December.

Captain Steve Hall with the Huntington Police Department says they have a “person of interest,” but are awaiting the results of DNA tests. Detectives received some preliminary results from the WV State Police Crime Lab in January. They couldn’t release those findings. Instead, they sent the evidence to an FBI lab in Arizona for additional, highly specialized testing. Detectives continue to await the outcome of those tests which typically takes a minimum of six months, although they’re not giving any timeline for when they expect to receive the results.

“We believe we have the right “person of interest”, but won’t know until we receive the DNA results. That test could either lead to an arrest or clear the individual,” said Capt. Hall.

Hall says the wait is very frustrating for the department and the family, but they all remain hopeful there will be an arrest and eventual closure to this case. In the meantime, leads have significantly diminished, but they’re still following up on everything they get.

Hickman went missing December 14th from her 8th Avenue apartment in Huntington. Her body was found a week later in a crawl space in the basement of her apartment building. Police later released she was strangled, but not sexually abused.

UPDATE: 7/11/08
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Huntington Police say they're still actively searching for the person who killed Marshall student Leah Hickman last December.

Sergeant Williams tells WSAZ.com's Carrie Cline that they're still awaiting results from DNA testing. They’re having some intricate tests run that just finished one stage at an FBI lab in Arizona and are now headed to the next stage.

According to Williams, detectives are still talking to a small pool of people and are developing new leads. He adds that they still have their theories that they're working on.

The case is ongoing and police say they're aggressively seeking any and all information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Leah Hickman’s murder.

Hickman was found strangled in a crawl space in her apartment building in December -- one week after she was reported missing.

So far, no suspects have been named in the case.

UPDATE: 3/13/08 @ 2PM
HUNTINGTON, W.Va (WSAZ) -- Huntington Police say Marshall student Leah Hickman was strangled -- and there are no signs that she was sexually assaulted.

Police say they do not believe Leah's murder was a random act -- and they believe the person or people responsible for the crime was/were "familiar with" Leah and the layout of her apartment building.

Police say they are not going to release the results of the DNA tests at this point in their investigation.

Police say they haven't excluded anyone with regard to suspects in the case -- and this is still a very active case.

Police say they met with Leah's family Wednesday prior to Thursday's news conference.

Huntington Police say tests are continuing and the investigation continues to involve multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and West Virginia State Police.

UPDATE: 3/13/08
HUNTINGTON, W.Va (WSAZ) -- WSAZ has confirmed that the Huntington Police Department will hold a news conference at 2pm regarding the Leah Hickman murder case.

A news release from the Huntington Police Criminal Investigations Bureau states that it "will be a brief meeting on the status of the Hickman investigation" -- but WSAZ's Dave Benton has learned that police are expected to release cause of death, evidence, and direction of the case.

Leah Hickman was the Marshall student who went missing on December 14th. Her body was found a week later in a crawl space in the basement of her apartment building.

As far we know, nobody has been arrested in the case. Police have been tight-lipped about the investigation.

WSAZ.com & WSAZ NewsChannel 3 will carry a live feed of the news conference at 2pm.

Stay with WSAZ.com for the latest information.

Just wanted to post today to remind all that someone robbed this lady of her life for no concrete reason. I was thinking of the sadness felt by the people that loved her this Christmas Morning. God Bless our children and I pray the thief among us wakes up today to a life filled with remorse.I guess God would forgive this thief if they were to make known their sin. God Bless our children for they are our future....

I think there should be an interview with the family too and Leah's friends. At this time of year it might be just what is needed. Maybe this person is sickened by what they did and her family and friends can persuade them to come forward. I know it's painful to be in the spotlight over the death of a loved one (from personal experience)but if it helps.......God be with Leah's family and friends.....and the HPD. I want to add that we should also pray for the person who did this, that God will put on their heart what they must do to help themselves as well as her family. He will forgive you but you must testify as to what happened and ask for forgiveness.

Ron, Sherry, Brian and boys, I just want you to know that you are still in our prayers. I was hoping so much that the murderer would have been found by now. If there is anything you all need, please let me know. If you need to talk and just want someone to listen, we are here. May the Lord bless and keep you all safe and comfort you throughout this and the coming year. Love you guys!

I was in Barboursville yesterday morning. I stood and looked at Dress Barn where Leah had worked.I thought about what Leah was doing at that time last year.I'm sure she had no idea that it would be her last day on this earth.I hope and pray they catch this monster(I'm being kind)! My prayers are with her family and friends. To the killer...I believe you read these posts...THEY ARE COMING FOR YOU!YOU CAN RUN AND HIDE BUT YOU ARE GOING TO BE FOUND AND DEALT WITH!!!MAYBE IF YOU TURN YOURSELF IN, THEY JUST MIGHT GO A LITTLE EASIER ON YOU, MAYBE!BUT KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO PAY!YOU BETTER PRAY THE POLICE GET YOU BEFOR HER FAMILY OR FRIENDS DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CHRIS H #87 and family, LOVE YOU LEAH WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU. P.S HPD LETS GET ON WITH THIS PLEASE GET THE SUSPECT ITS BEEN ONE YEAR TODAY 12-14-08

Posted by: I wonder... on Dec 14, 2008 at 03:53 AM
if perhaps the DNA results have come back, but didn't match their suspect; DNA is only useful if you have someone to match it against. If it doesn't match their suspect and doesn't match anyone in CODIS, then it's not useful (until they have another person to match it against).

Posted by: IKnow on Dec 13, 2008 at 10:14 PM
Jewell, have you told the police you know who committed this horrible crime? How do can you be so sure there is no DNA evidence? Do you even know what "DNA" is? From your comment, I don't think you do.

Posted by: Jewell on Dec 13, 2008 at 12:55 AM
I don't mean to sound negative... but, what kind of DNA do you expect the police to come up with... Leah was strangled (remember) it would be hard to find anything.. I feel the police have done all they can do right now.. someday someone will slip up and hopefully someone will be arrested for this crime.. There is no doubt in my mind..this murderer was not from around here.. I believe with all my heart this person was involved with leah in some sort of way.. and, I don't think it was a good way.. NOW, I KNOW I will GET ATTACKED BY A READER.. OH WELL..

Posted by: NATE on Dec 12, 2008 at 08:32 PM
How did the Law Enforcement in Florida get DNA results of that little girl in 24 hours?? Oh..it wasnt Huntington West Virginia!!!

Posted by: IKnow on Dec 12, 2008 at 01:52 PM
It's not inconceivable that the police are still waiting on DNA results, if they sent it to a state funded lab, however, they could have had these same results in 7 to 14 days if they had spend the extra money for a private lab. I think in the case of a homicide they should have done as most citys do and outsourced it.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THIS POOR GIRL'S MURDER HAS NOT BEEN SOLVED. I'M NOT HEAR TO BASH ANYONE, I JUST WANTED TO HAVE SOMEONE WHO KNOWS TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED IN THIS MURDER TO MAKE IT UNSOLVEABLE. I MEAN NOTHING....NO ONE HAS TOLD THE PUBLIC NOTHING....NO ONE HAS DONE ANYTHING TO FORCE COVERAGE ON THIS STORY. PEOPLE THIS WEEKEND A YEAR AGO WE WERE HEARING ABOUT THIS INNOCENT GIRL MISSING & LATER FINDING OUT THAT PEOPLE WERE WALKING ON TOP OF HER BODY. NOW ALL WE HEAR IS "THERE IS A PERSON OF INTEREST". I WANT TO VOMIT THEN PRAY THAT NO ONE I LOVE IS MURDERED IN HUNGTINGTON. IT'S AWFUL FOR ANY MURDER TO BE UNSOLVED. HOW THIS POOR GIRL WAS MURDERED, WE HAVE YET TO FIND OUT, NO SUSPECTS, NO DEMANDS ON HPD, NOTHING. IT MAKES ME REALIZE HOW INSIGNIFICANT I REALLY AM. WILL WE EVEN HAVE A STORY ON THE ANNIE DATE? I'M SORRY FOR BEING SO HARSH BUT..STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING THIS WEEKEND & PRAY TOGETHER THAT THE BURDEN WILL BE SO OVERWHELMING THAT THE SUSPECT BOASTS TO SOMEONE AND GET CAUGHT. PEACE

well heres my opinion is wsaz pursues the story with hpd like puts pressure on them maybe even by doing a interview with the family it might push the po po to do sumfin or at least show that they still care about it......PUT THE PRESSURE ON THEM !!!

come on HPD its time to hear some news or do you know. WSAZ can you tell us some news

Posted by: Chad on Dec 10, 2008 at 02:06 PM
"Continuing news coverage" is how this story stays listed. Wouldn't that imply current information being updated? Sorry WSAZ i know you have no new info or you would let us know but isn't the phrase headline a little misleading when the last news was months ago?

TO SOMEONE:WHEN SOMEONE DOES A CRIME LIKE THIS,THERE IS SOMEONE WHO KNOWS SOMETHING.EITHER THEY DID SOME BRAGGING OR THEY HAD A SLIP OF THE TONGUE OR THEY WEREN'T WHERE THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE.THE THING IS IF YOU COVER IT UP OR KEEP IT TO YOURSELF IT MAKES YOU JUST AS GUILTY.AS FOR HPD,I KNOW YOU HAVE A DIFFICULT JOB,IT HAS BEEN A YEAR,IF YOU HAVE A LEAD OR A SUSPECT.CAN YOU TELL US IF THAT IS GOING ANYWHERE?ALSO IS THE EVIDENCE BACK YET?TO THE PERSON WHO DID THIS,IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME ,SO GET YOUR DUCKS IN A ROW,YOU'LL BE GONE FOR A LONG WHILE.PUT YOURSELF IN THE FAMILIES PLACE,DO YOU HAVE A CHILD,A SISTER,NIECE OR A CLOSE FRIEND.HOW WOULD YOU FEEL?PERSONALLY I THINK YOU ARE A COWARD,ARE YOU BRAVE ENOUGH TO SEND A COMMENT TO SPEAK FOR YOURSELF.I DIDN'T THINK SO.

Haven't heard anything about this case lately! Bet the Killer likes that NEws!Hope everyone realizes that a NUT is on the loose. Does the Police really have DNA? I bet they have NOTHING,,, Why else would this case take so long? SOMEone close to this knows who done it! God Bless our children!

It has been almonst one year and still the family and friends have no more answers as to what has happened to Leah. I only pray that her killer is found. This is a case that is on my mind daily. I am from Mason Co. and although I didn't know Leah personally, I still mourned for her and her family. I pray that her killer is found and justice will be served SOON.

Posted by: Justice on Dec 5, 2008 at 11:02 PM
I see there has been more shootings in Huntington this week. Perhaps Leah was in the wrong place @ the wrong time. If this is the case then we will never know who killed her because they covered the tracks well. Take a look @ the OJ thing. Never fear the killer may get free from the law but NO God... The killer will be brought to justice soon....Have Faith! If someone is hiding the Killer then LOOK out because Christmas time is a time for Miracles and I believe it will be soon! Justice for LEAH!

I am from Mason County but I did not know Leah. The killer of Anchor woman Anne Presley - already in custody. DNA linking him. My that was fast. This year long ordeal, simply ridicolous.Unless this was a professinal hit which i highly doubt, the killer could not be that tidy as not to leave clues.NO TEST WOULD TAKE THIS LONG. IT LOOKS LIKE SOMEBODY GOT AWAY WITH MURDER !!!!

You know, it seems like this just happened yesterday and here we are close to the day one year later. The hurt is still in my heart it will never go away and I also am a mother - I cannot imagine the pain Sherry has experienced and still carrying around in her heart. Leah was my "shrinking violet" she was so modest and shy sometimes - she would blush at any compliment. We miss her so badly. Please tell us something at least let us know you are still looking we need that little bit of hope that the person or persons will be captured and put away as to not be allowed to run free this Christmas nor ever more.

I'm just a Huntington resident but I think about this case quite often and don't want to see it go cold. All the interest will keep it froming doing so.

Posted by: Concerned Citizen on Nov 28, 2008 at 01:55 PM
I agree w/ everyone that this case should not be removed from WSAZ and should not be allowed to go cold. Even though I did not know Leah I want her killer to brought to justice. The person who did this is not right in the head and I for one do not want them on the streets not knowing what makes them tick. Leah's family needs closure. My prayers go out to them.

Posted by: Amazed on Nov 26, 2008 at 03:49 PM
From some of the posts I've seen it looks like people around here seem to know who the culprit is. Is there just not enough evidence to convict them? A lot of people type as though they know who's responsible. Hope someone will come forward, this poor girl deserves to have her killer found.

I have been living in Huntington for almost one year. Having moved from the North East where violence was the daily norm, I assumed it would be different. Killings continue to populate our local news and I am very disappointed in the fact that an arrest has not been made in Leah's cases. Please do not forget this innocent victim.

Posted by: Linda on Nov 22, 2008 at 01:21 PM
This needs to be turned over to Americas Most Wanted at least then it will get solved!!! I dont think HPD knows what they are doing.

Happy Birthday Leah!! Wish you could be here to enjoy it with your family and friends.

To the family... I am so sorry that this past year has been so horric for each of you. I pray I never have to live through an experience like this. I admire each of you for your dedication to Leah. I pray that God will provide the answers needed to put closure on this horrid situation. I will continue to remember you in my prayers. May God bless your family and give you the strength to face each day. I think it is wonderful that your family has organized the walk and scholarship. Hopefully, this will spark attention for the case and bring about new information. I hope that in the midst of all of this that your family can have a peaceful and enjoyable holiday season. I am sure this time of year is especially hard for your family - just remember that God is bigger than all things and he will prevail in his time. The killer or killers may think that they are in the clear but that is not the case. God has it all written down!May God bless you and comfort you now and always. :)

I MUST AGREE WITH HARRIET,THE KILLER MUST HAVE TOOK TIME TO MAKE SURE HE OR SHE NEVER LEFT EVIDENCE AND THEY WEREN'T AFRAID OF GETTING CAUGHT BY SOMEONE ELSE COMING IN ON THEM AT THE APARTMENT. WONDER WHY???????

Posted by: nancydrew on Nov 21, 2008 at 06:49 PM
Don't blame the HPD, blame the killer who doesn't have the decency to confess and let it all be over. Whoever the guilty party is must be suffering tremendously from the guilt of going away with someone as productive as Leah.

Posted by: HARRIET on Nov 20, 2008 at 09:49 PM
In all likely hood the evidence hpd has isn't enough to charge their person of interest with murder. I'm thinking maybe this was a premeditated murder because somebody sure covered their tracks well.

This case is nothing unusual. Remember, circumstantial evidence is not what maters, the direct evidence has to link the person of interest to the crime. The case probably will go cold, but in a few years a friend of the killer will squeal and the arrest will be made. Nobody can keep a secret that long without going crazy.

Posted by: Justice on Nov 18, 2008 at 08:46 AM
Stumped> You are exactly right the Media loves real life stories and I am not from Huntington and I do not know this girl either but I have followed this story from day one and It is just too weird that the killer is not found!Suspects are generally held until evidence proves otherwise or are released on Bond or something!! Not so here??? I smell a rat and it is coming from this story's direction! Person of interest? Isn't that a suspect? Someone is hiding something here!!! WHO??

Posted by: stumped on Nov 18, 2008 at 03:49 AM
CEDAR: well I can't believe the Media wouldn"t care. They love stories like this. Your way of thinking is why the media hasn't demanded information. I think it is funny how in the past national & local crime coverage of the Police depts providing info. to the public through the media, LEADS come to the police & the extra eyes help find the person(s) that committed the crime. I don't live in Huntington, but, became interested in the story when I saw it ON NATIONAL NEWS. I have followed it since & am stumped that Huntington and Marshall haven't demanded the answers. YES YES the HPD maybe going over the case, but when the public lets it go cold, the HPD cuts the case from their manpower, the criminals know they can get away with crimes, the HPD shelves the hard ones. Thankfully shows like CSI & W/out a Trace give the good people HOPE, the criminals aren't as able to get away with crimes. BUTT what do I know? Amber alerts etc, never work. When a plant never gets sun it dies! So expose it!!!!

Posted by: cedar on Nov 17, 2008 at 03:43 PM
STUMPED: sometimes, the national media just doesn't care about these things. why don't YOU try to get them involved and see how far you get. If I remember right, when Leah went missing and was later discovered, it WAS on the national news. Since then, they have not been interested in covering it. I know it sucks, but that's the way it goes. I pray every day that Leah's family gets the closure they need. Eventually, it will come. These things take time, especially when the evidence is supposedly in a national lab in Arizona. What the general public does not know is that the testing that the HPD says is being done on the evidence can take MONTHS. Shows like CSI Have ruined things for real law enforcement. It just doesn't happen like it does on TV.

Posted by: clarissa tells all on Nov 16, 2008 at 02:13 AM
leah;s myspace messages and identifying info will provide the best clues to solving the case however there is no direct evidence linking him/her to crime, it is all circumstantial like most cases that may be solved but will never result in an arrest.

Posted by: STUMPED on Nov 16, 2008 at 01:00 AM
I am stumped. Not one person had made any effort to make this case go national. Not one person has attempted to confront the HPD for answers. All we do is get on here and make comments. Marshall University Students dropped the ball on this one. It shows that people are content to sit back and let a person get away with murder. Marshall students, if you were in Leah's shoes, wouldn't you have expected an answer? It's the small town crime and no one knows about it. Make it a national search, get the media off of Obama and the financial crisis and let's make Huntington, West Virginia a place where free loading crimes do not take place. It is up to you, if you truly mean what you say when you say you want answers. Make the answers appear. I promise if National news gets ahold of the story HPD will reveal the answers. Marshall, do not let this one year date a day to shake your head in deibelief, make the Media get invovled.

Posted by: stephanie-anne on Nov 15, 2008 at 10:54 PM
Just because the name f the person of interest hasn't been released doesn't mean that he is free. He is probably being hounded by detectives trying to force a confession. Watch law and order svu and you'll see for yourself. And on all the SVU episodes it is never a female, but always the last person you would expect. Sometimes the detectives on SVU take more than a year to find the suspect and even longer to make the case. But the perp is not usually the last one to see the victim alive, but someone who doesn't even come in until later on in the episode. Then you're surprised at how done it but you don't blame the detectives or the police department for taking so long, so why should you be critical of the HPD when it hasn't taken as long as some of SVU's easier cases?

TO JESS-- I'm not from Mason County either...I'm from right here in Huntington. I didn't know Leah either, but what I do know is that my 9 year old daughter and her mother lived 3 houses down from Leah. And to know that something like this could hit so close to home is scary as hell, especially for my daughter. I'm just like everybody else on here....I want to know what happened and what's taking so long. So, for you to come on here and say that stuff makes me sick, especially to know that another human-being could be like that and say stuff like that pertaining to a murder victim. How would you like it if your sibling was murdered and I came on here and told everybody to get over it and asking to stop covering the story? I wouldn't do that because I'm a decent human-being and I actually have a heart. I'm done waisting my time on "Jess". To all other commentors that have a heart and concern....Hats off to ya! One more thing....Did the DNA get lost in Arizona or something...come on!

It has been almost ONE YEAR! Wheels of justice move slowly-pull out the WD-40. This family/community needs positive action with results. The killer does not have the right to waste O2 that Leah would have appreciated. Hello, HPD - Judicial system get off your ____ and do something for Leah. We visit with Leah weekly & it just isn't fair that anyone should just be put aside as it appears. Ron, Sherry, Brian & family we shall keep you in our constant prayers. We admire your strength & are fully support you.

Who cares about the headlines on WSAZ, what's important is that they find the "killer" although most people have a pretty good idea who did it. HPD are not doing a good job and you can't say that these things take years. The person who did it is still free and HPD knows who it is they just can't say. If everyone would read every article on Leah Hickman they could put 2 and 2 together and figure it up on their own. HPD doesnt care about a college girl who was killed a year ago. They'll never arrest anyone. And if they have an "person of interest" then why isnt that person in jail? arent supspects put in jail until proven innocent? Or is that just whats right and no one cares whats right anymore!!?

Posted by: Justice on Nov 11, 2008 at 07:09 AM
I think Jess should just stop visiting this site! She obviously has other motives for wanting this story gone. It is not like this story is going anywhere. We the viewers are waiting for the DNA reports and some Answers!!!This was not a professional job! We are all smart enough to know the the killer/killers had plenty of time to clean the crime scene and cover their tracks. This site is to let the HPD know the that the Public still DEMAND answers as to why it took so long to find her and WHO the people are that killed her. Waiting on DNA is stupid as we all know it does not take this long to study. The HPD knows something else or are hoping someone like JESS will spark the interest and make this story go away. Just curious JEss why do you question the length of time WSAZ is carrying this story? Most everyone out there has a suspect in mind and we want to know how they are getting by with MURDER. God bless the Parents of this child and the pain they are going thru! WE want answers!

Posted by: Ashley on Nov 10, 2008 at 03:07 PM
To Jess>> I'm not from Mason County & I didn't know Leah, but I want answers. Still. We are 34 days shy of one year and have no answers. I want this person to pay for what they did. Jess>> Why are you so complacent to see someone get away with murder? Leah's killer can and will be caught. If you aren't interested in the story, it's simple: Don't read it!!!

Posted by: Terri on Nov 10, 2008 at 12:21 AM
Please help keep this case alive! I also live in Mason County and I disagree with Jess. I don't know anyone who feels the way he/she does. Everyone I know wants the killer arrested and convicted and we want this case kept alive until that happens. If it takes a year, two years or five years this case doesn't need to be forgotten. Leah deserves justice and her family deserves closure. Yes, we know there are many unsolved murders that are forgotten and that is awful. BUT that doesn't mean that this case should be shelved. It is not a cold case because there is testing still going on. This isn't TV or a crime novel, in real life these tests can take months and solving a crime like this can take years. Please continue to pray for Leah's family and friends.

Posted by: mothman on Nov 7, 2008 at 04:46 PM
we all know why jess wants this to go away

Posted by: jess on Nov 7, 2008 at 09:18 AM
All i'm saying is that the caption is continuing coverage for leah's story yet it appears to have reached the end. Every unsolved case should deserve the same. BY THE WAY TO CONNIE,I AM A FELLOW MASON COUNTIAN and i know that alot of people feel the same way i do. they just won't say it. I don't mean to sound callous, but in all honesty should this story be here 6 months or 1 year from now if it's still unsolved? Life goes on.....other cases are equally important. WSAZ please be fair to all.

Posted by: TO JESS: on Nov 6, 2008 at 01:43 PM
you have alot of nerve saying that, we are not going to stand for wsaz to put this on the cold case files! because we arent going to give up!!!! we are going to find leahs killer and maybe you shouldnt read this page if you dont have the compaction that we do on finding the killer!

Posted by: Connie on Nov 6, 2008 at 01:26 PM
We the people of Mason County does NOT want this story to be removed. Leah was one of ours. We are coming up on one year and still do not know much more than when this terrible event took place, but we do know that the shadow that clouded all of our holidays last year has followed each day since. Whomever did this needs to be caught and payfor the crime they comitted and this is our only way of finding out things without seeming inconsiderate to the family. I pray the police get results back soon and can finally close this case but regardless it will never bring this beautiful child back to us. With the season approaching, please keep all the family in your prayers.

Posted by: jess on Nov 5, 2008 at 11:26 PM
Hey wsaz- a question? Soon it will be a year. Will you pleasae remove this story and put it on the cold case shelf ? Since nothing is being done allow room for another story .

Come on guys! This investigation has been such a let down. What happened to good old fashioned police work? I find it appalling that they are relying solely on DNA. That's absurd. There had to have been some clues at the scene besides DNA. It's not likely that this killer was a "professional," or even experienced. You know he/she screwed up somewhere. It's pathetic that a killer is proving to be smarter than the police. HPD, if you need help admit it. Call in some experts, team up with resources at MU. There is no reason for this crime to have remained unsolved for almost a year.

The investigstions you watch CSI are not realistic. Cases often take time (several years) to develope. Crime labs are backed up b/c they are trying to provide investigators with evidence that they can use to make an arrest! You gotta have all your ducks in a row before you go out arresting ppl. There is only one crime lab in WV and this is the case for nearly EVERY state. This is not a problem with HPD or WV's justice system specifically...its something that needs to be addressed across the board. Thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends.

Posted by: Tammi on Nov 3, 2008 at 09:01 AM
I think that they have so many murders in huntington they if they don't find the killer right away they lose interest and put it aside. Well this killer as w/all the others needs to be found and locked away. This poor family has waited almost a year now and still no closure to what has happened to her. If this case was so important then you would think they would hurry things up a little and find the killer.

Posted by: Sam on Nov 2, 2008 at 03:23 PM
I can't believe the person that killed this girl is so smart that he has outwitted the HPD for almost a year. If he was able to do this and leave no clues behind he must be a master criminal.

Posted by: icunurseRN on Nov 2, 2008 at 06:14 AM

AND SINCE NO ONE HAVE BEEN CHARGED AND LOCKED UP THAT MEANS THERE IS STILL A KILLER ON THE STREETS, WHO'S CHILD COULD THIS HAPPEN TO NEXT? COME ON HPD IF THIS JOB IS TO BIG FOR YOU THEN GET SOMEONE ON IT THAT CAN NAME THE KILLER AND BRING JUSTICE FOR THIS GIRLS AWFUL DEATH

I am glad they are going to do a walk on what would have been her birthday. The students who will benefit from this scholarship will be grateful as well as the family for all the support. Although it has been almost a year everyone will recall that Thanksgiving 07 was the last holiday the family got to enjoy with her. We will continue to pray for the family during these approaching holidays, and for Justice. This case has touched so many lives. Leah was a sweet girl and she will never be forgotten. Don't give up or loose hope. God knows who committed this terrible crime and in his time we will know as well.

I was watching Today Show and an intern solved a 37 yr. old murder case! Maybe the HPD needs to work with Marshall Un. and get their Forensics Dept. on some of these cold cases.Don't laugh people in authority need to look @ options out there.Sounds like by listening to the News that a whole lot of people in Athority has been slacking on duties! Stock ratings & CEO's, Fed Housings CEO's, Company Presidents, just to list a few! No one is good enough @ Murder to cover all the tracks... Sounds like our country is a mess and normal citizens are paying the price with lives! No one posts much now on this site.. Looks as if this lil lady's life is Gone and for what? Most of all for what reason?? Give the case to someone with a new perspective! They just may solve the case...

Posted by: nervous nelly on Oct 22, 2008 at 12:32 AM
I was walking to class today on a nearly empty street and I got nervous...my first thought was Leah. I know she was killed at home...but could that guy/girl I just passed be the one? Even if they aren't could they be capable of doing harm to me or someone else. My point here is that there was a time I could walk down the streets aware of my surroundings and not have a panic attack! Now it's ALWAYS on your mind that the person you are approaching may not just simply pass by. Or that car coming up the street driving slow might not just be a cautious driver. I hate not feeling safe in a place I love. It's not just Leah, but all the cases that haven't been solved that makes me want to carry a baseball bat everywhere I go. Something has to be done. I have great respect for police officers...but I think that the public needs something to restore our faith that we can be protected and served. It's not safe anywhere I know...but this is HOME! Call me naive...but I used to feel safe here.

The Holidays are approaching fast and this case is still stagnant. To all of us that have posted here trying to keep a vigil for Leah it has been a long year.During the Holiday's let's remember to keep our loved ones close. It is not the fault of the HPD that this case is lost.WE must remember that this person/person's had plenty of time to clean the crime scene and cover their tracks! Let' just pray that this Act of injustice Haunts them daily and they will never prosper in this life! God grant the parents the serenity to accept the things that they can change, and accept the things that they cannot. Hope is never lost! The person of Interest Knows who they are and the truth is out there. Perhaps they will Confess and give Leah the Justice she deserves.....God Bless our Children!

Female crimes are rising and there are a lot of evil women due to the broken relationship factors. This crime had to involve two people or someone was mighty scared! I say if it was someone that knew Leah they will come forward soon. The stress has got to be overwhelming! Perhaps if they would come forward the police would let them plead to a lesser charge than MUrder. I would say their life is over anyway! God has to be very angry @ them and his wrath will be stronger than anything else they could endure.. Bless our children and comfort the loved ones that carry the burden. If this were my child I would try to look @ it as It is better to have Loved and Lost! Because truly this little lady was a joy to love... God Bless the family and keep them strong! Leah would have wanted them to live on! I didn't know her but I feel she gave much love....

I do not post to be mean, but if there is something out there that someone has heard perhaps it will help keep the story alive and the police will read something that might change the waiting game?? If we post something that is out there someone gets on and says to stop being disrespectful to the family?? NOt TRUe! It is just what everyone is saying and there has to be a truth out there somewhere?I do not think Leah was into anything bad I think she was an innocent victim and some Nut case has killed this lil girl for some stupid reason and it is not right!! That is all!So I say WSAZ post our coments and let people say what they have heard or think! If not this story is gone and she will be forgotten. Just another case unsolved. Wonder if the police has polygraphed everyone close just as routine? Wonder if Leah went to McDonald alone? I heard her car was not locked? Was there camera's @ MD? Was someone stalking her? Did she give any of her friends any clues before her death? SOMETHING!

I AM NOT INSULTING ANYONE THAT TRULY NEW LEAH, AS I DID NOT, BUT TO READ HER STORY AND TO SEE HOW A COMPANY THAT SHE WORKED FOR RESPONDED LEAD ME TO BELIEVE LEAH WAS A WONDERFUL PERSON. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE BRIGHTNESS THAT SHE BROUGHT TO THE LIVES OF THE PEOPLE SHE CAME INTO CONTACT WITH. NO I TOO CHECK THIS SITE OFTEN AND WONDER HOW SUCH A TRAGIC EVENT HAPPENED. NO WE CAN NOT STOP DEMANDING AN ANSWER. YES WE WANT THE PROPER PERSON OR (S) CAUGHT. LET US PRAY THAT NO ONE ELSE WOULD EVER HAVE TO BE TOUCH IN THIS TRAGIC WAY. DO NOT LET HER CASE FIZZLE AWAY. LET US CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR THE ANSWER AND FOR GOD TO ALLOW ANYONE THAT KNEW WHO DID THIS AND THE PERSON (S) FEEL SO MUCH BURDEN THAT THE GUILT FORCES THE TO TELL THE TRUTH, OPEN THE HPD EYES AND CLEAR THEIR MINDS TO THE DIRECTION TO CATCH EM. DONT LET HER CASE DIE...

They never say anything bad?? I just wonder if other people's comments are ejected? My last post suggested that people post some of the rumors they have heard about the case and It was not posted! I think it might shake this story up a bit if people started yelling louder!!! Where is the DNA tests???Christmas is almost here.........

Females generally do not commit violent acts, especially females who are of less than average intelligence, not athletic, dependent on others for companionship, etc. It would take a very intelligent, physically fit, energetic person to be the culprit of this horrific crime.

To Disbelief. I disagree! There are lots of people who care. We write and check these boards everyday, praying for news.! But the facts are, we have to wait for test results. I would rather them take a year and get it right rather then them take 2 months and get it wrong. We owe it to Leah to keep posting and keep praying that her killer is brought to justice! It isn't right for you to say that no one cares, because a lot of people do. Even if they didn't know Leah or do not know the family, there are a LOT of people who care.

We all care! How dare you make such a remark!!!Leah was and is loved and is still very much in the thoughts and prayers of many people. Her family and friends will never stop hurting or grieving for their little girl, sister, friend & neighbor.Yes, it is taking a long time for them to solve this but I believe there is a reason for that. One that you wouldn't understand. The truth will come out in God's time, not yours!

I AM GLAD THAT WE WILL BE INFORMED ABOUTTHIS AGAIN AND NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS CASE. HPD IS NOT THE ONLY PEOPLE TO BLAME HERE, THE COMMUNITY IS LETTING THIS CASE GO COLD. NO ONE IS DEMANDING AN ANSWER. WHY IS? THIS CASE ANY DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER UNSOLVED MURDER? I AM THINKING NO ONE CARES, NO ONE. I BET THE PERSON OR (S) THAT DID THIS ARE SITTING THERE FEELING WONDERFUL RIGHT NOW, LIVING THEIR LIVES AS THOUGH NOTHING HAS HAPPENED. OH WELL, IT WILL GO COLD SOON, PEOPLE ARE GIVING UP, LOOK AT THE POSTINGS, THERE ARE FEWER AND FEWER AND FEWER. WHEN THE DUST SETTLES IN OUR LIVES, WE GO ON ABOUT OUR EVERYDAY EVENTS AS THOUGH NOTHING HAS HAPPENED. NO ONE CARES............

The reason other murders have been solved is because someone ratted the other person out. I'm sorry to say this but HPD hasn't solved many cases unless they have had eye witness testimony or turned a participant. I wonder how many they have solved on dna or forensics. Anybody know or would like to take a guess???? This poor child's family and friends need to know why she is gone.I hope we all know soon.

I would like to see WSAZ ask the head of the Huntington Police Department what progress has been made on this case. I never see this guy do a interview on television. Maybe a little pressure from the news media would do some good.

Posted by: Rico on Oct 2, 2008 at 12:28 PM
Our justice system works in favor of the criminal. That's why it's called the "criminal" justice system instead of the "victim" justice system. Shouldn't it be the victim that receives justice? Regardless of the outcome, Leah's killer has gotten away with murder for almost a year already. Justice delayed is not justice served.

i think it has taken to long to solve this murder they dont take this long on the fake soap operas when someone is killed are they hiding something just like the four teenagers five years almost now and no answers it kind of makes you wonder what is going on in our city i just feel for the families of these victims i know everyday must be a struggle for them i think more pressure should be put on them to solve these crimes because it could happen again to some other family members my prayers are with them

Why do people think this case will be any different from the other unsolved murders? How about the girl known as a prostitute killed 20 yeaars ago in the alley behind Wards doughnuts on 4th Avenue. I do not think that the HPD really knows how to investigate anything. This is murder. Look at the case that is about 5 years old and they charged the 4 men with that. The only way that was solved was one of the men confessed to it after his girlfriend and him got into a fight.Get with the program HPD!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 24, 2008 at 09:59 AM
Sometimes it just takes longer for some reason. My husband and I had a chromosome study done in Columbus at Children's Hospital. I was supposed to take six weeks and ended up taking six months. We were really frustrated but all we could do was wait. We were at the mercy of the lab. It just happens sometimes. I'm still praying for justice and for comfort and strength for Leah's family.

Posted by: Joe on Sep 24, 2008 at 08:05 AM
Everytime a little pressure is put on them, they say "we are waiting on test results". They are just putting everyone off until it is forgotten. People should have raised money for a good private investigater.

Not Pessismistic! A realist...I would almost bet that they reports come back and clear the person of interest. Then the case will go on cold files. This person covered their tracks and did it well! We will see.. That is not what I wnat but I think if the HPD had anything concrete they would have rushed the DNA! They are giving this person time to come forward and that is not gonna happen! The killer is just that a killer. The police know who done this but they will never prove it! Think about it? If the police was certain the would have broke thier neck for a conviction! I follow the case too and I say the evidence is NOT there enough to convict? Why did the dogs not pick up the scent? Was the scent not Leah's? Right under the dogs nose she was and a human found her?? Something not right about this case but the evidence is not here! Just my opinion....I am a realist!

Posted by: Justice on Sep 22, 2008 at 12:25 AM
Six Month's are closing in fast! Come on we can post forever but this case will never be solved! The killer is going to get by with it(wait & see)!To those of you who ask why keep the story going?? Obviously the HPD wants it to keep going because they keep feeding info.I am certain that Leah is no more special than any of our loved ones.. It is just this story took off because people keep it alive! I am skeptical now but I still watch the site to see what info is shared..The facts are all out, but still no killer.... Bet they are off the hook with the law... Hope they are off the hook with GOD...Only God,Leah & the killer knows! Life on the edge is the only life the killer has now! JUSTICE will come to them even if the Law does not catch them the Guilt will eat them alive! Unless it was a terrible mistake and the person choked because they could not face the horrible truth.. God bless our children!

I agree with Debbie..I don't think HPD would have to look very far for the person that did this...I think they were very close to her ...It could have been an accident and then panic set in...My heart goes out to the family..But wondering why HPD is dragging their feet?? As I read in comments here today..Every update is just that updating the old updates....The family needs some kind of closure..

When are they going to fidn out who murdered Leah and let her REST IN PEACE and give her family a little bit of peace. I have been following this case since it opened and it is very sad. Whoever did this needs to be put in jail for life without parole. She was an innocent college student who was trying to make something of herself. They were probably jealous of her because she was getting her life in order.

I agree that this takes time BUT have u ever notice most (not all) but MOST murders r solved within a week or two and sometime right away. This has been almost a YEAR so what is the HPD doing??? Setting at a donut shop drinking coffe and talking about the case, not doing anything about it!!!!!!

Why would the family want coverage on all the bad things that people say about them and their family.(That does not make since)All I am saying is if you can not say good things stay off respect the family and Leach RIP LEAH. How would Leah feel about people and famliy members saying bad things about her famliy, How would you feel if it was you or your famliy on here saying making bad comments. STOP and thing before you comment is all I am saying or walk away before posting THINK OF THE FAMLIY. HPD your doing a great job just don't drop the ball.

God Bless Leah.!

to point pleasant girl,i agree with you.people need to keep posting on this site.leah wouldn't be forgotten.

Posted by: point pleasant girl on Sep 15, 2008 at 04:11 PM
to anyone who aks why this case is so special obviously didn't know leah. i did and this case is very important to me. if you don't want to know about it quit reading the updates and don't comment on here. i pray that all of you who feel it is "old news" never have to lose someone like this and have put up with people saying its not important and we just need to forget about it. also all the public interest makes sure that this case isn't forgotten and that the hpd and all others involved keep working on it until it is solved. please don't be disrespectful to leah's family and all who loved her. she meant so much to so many people and just because you weren't fortunate enough to meet her and be touched by her kindness doesn't mean that the loss of her will ever be "old news"

My deepest condolences to Leah's family. I did not know her any of her family. I still think of her very often. I pray God can heal their pain. I pray that the killer will be caught and MADE AN EXAMPLE OF....God bless whosever heart is broken

TO ANONYMOUS ARE YOU FAMILY? I AM AND OBVIOUSLY YOU DONT UNDERSTAND THAT THE FAMILY WANTS ALL THE COVERAGE THAT WE CAN GET

Posted by: Dale on Sep 14, 2008 at 07:50 AM
Leah Hickman's murderer or murder's are still walking the streets free. If police know of someone of interest let them release the information to the public. Maybe the pressure on this person or persons may bring forward a confession and the reason why this happened to this beautiful young woman. Sometimes police can remain to tight lipped about information that may bring about a closing of the case and justice for Leah's family.

Gene, This needs to stop. NO one wants to thing about what they are posting. Nothing toward Carrie Cline. They need to stop and think about the REAL FAMILY and not the ones that is on here just saying there family. I am sure this makes them HURT EVEN MORE. WHO cares how they went o the funeral they have that right She ws a daughter an sister and I'm almost sure a best friend and friend as well as a great employee. SO Gene how about this WSAZ stop posting rude comments about the family and Leah

Posted by: gene on Sep 12, 2008 at 05:36 PM
no WSAZ.don't stop.the way carrie cline went at the HPD.you all seem to be the ones who really do demand justice.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 12, 2008 at 03:26 PM
WSAZ YOU NEED TO TAKE THE COMMENTS OFF OF HERE. THIS IS GETTING CRAZY...............

Posted by: Point Pleasant Viewer on Sep 12, 2008 at 05:57 AM
Praying for the Hickman-Russell family. We could wonder how (except for the Grace of God) that they get up everyday wondering what happened to their beautiful daughter? And, we wonder how the murderer lives with himself? If only he would come forward and tell the family and plead for forgiveness. Leah was a precious young lady and deserved to live to realize her dreams. She worked hard. Her mother and father loved her and her siblings. Have mercy on the family -- and stop the wild speculations. This family is hurting. So are the friends and community.

It sound like the case is growing cold to me. I hope for the family's sake that it is not true and the police are really on somebody. I know the family needs closure. I used to live in that area and grew up on the southside and in the apartment building I used to live in the laundry room was in the basement. I know there was homeless men ran out of our basement on many occasions. They would sit down there and get drunk. When I started reading about this case a wierd vibe came over me that it could have been a wonderer and not somebody she knew.

Posted by: mothman on Sep 11, 2008 at 04:41 PM
i dont know.sounds to me say what, knows a little bit bout what she's saying.

TO: Say What! Leah was raised by her mother. She lived with her mother until she attended college and then stayed with her mother when she came home on breaks. Her mother did "everything" for her. You do not know what you are talking about.

Looks like the comments are heating up and the truth is @ hand! We have all heard the rumors the Sister, jealous ex girlfriend, the older man, the new boyfriend, the apartment owner, the water heater man! Who done it? There should be DNA all over her body from stuffing it in the hole! Who ever done this is up the CREEK! I wish people would stop the comments about the HPD.If there were less crooked people and more good policemen out there getting paid enough to put their life on the line the streets would be clean! Not to mention COURTS filled with Crackheads. I say section off a piece of every town and let the DRUGGIES live there and if they filter out among decent people take them back to their section & wait them out! Give decent people back their cities and Murder will be few!I still wonder why Leah posted releived on her myspace page that Friday morning before she died?? Something big to her went down that week and she thought it was over!! I pray the DNA confirms the suspicions..

to: say what,I really am not aware of many details of what happened at the funeral.I am also tied to the family.I do know many people are pointing the finger at jess ,but they beat around the bush.Ido know the family reads these comments and I will not say anything to hurt them
