HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - More than 900 students participated in Marshall University's commencement Saturday morning.

University officials say more than 2,600 students earned degrees this year.

West Virginia State Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin gave the 2008 commencement address.

In the most controversial remark of the day, Marshall Faculty Senate President Larry Stickler ended his speech by expressing that Marshall students receive their degrees "the old fashioned way: they earn them."

The crowd gathered at Big Sandy Superstore Arena erupted in laughter in the reference to the ongoing degree scandal at West Virginia University involving Governor Joe Manchin's daughter.

Marshall's oldest graduate is 81-year-old Huntington, W.Va., native Lou Capaldini, who received a Masters of Arts in Teaching.

Who was that annoying kid in the background? Oh wait...I think it was my grandson. Sorry folks. But anyway...you grads do a bang up job and I think you all will go far in your careers.

Announcing the names is the ONLY way to go. In a world where drug dealers, murderers, and sexual "strangers" get recognized in our media daily, it is worth it to spend a little extra recognizing the "GOOD THINGS". Keep it up and hope all the colleges and universities follow suit.

I attended the commencement as a graduate. I would not have attended if my name wasn't called when I walked across the stage. It's pointless to go and just be part of a crowd. I enjoyed the recognition I received when walking across the stage, receiving my "diploma" (real one comes in the mail," and shaking President Kopp's hand as well as the Dean of my college's hand.

Congrats to the grads! But, announcing every graduate's name has destroyed the commencement. Now, only half of all graduates attend. Return to the original way where sections are announced and only Ph.D. and M.D. grads are announced.

My nephew graduated today from MU. His father passed away just before Christmas and couldn't be here. I just know he was watching today though. WAY TO GO CALEB...WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!
