KENOVA, W. Va. (WSAZ) -- Swimming pools are popular meeting spots in the heat of summer. One local pool in our region is now on the road to a comeback after nearly closing.

Dreamland Pool in Kenova was once the largest swimming pool east of the Mississippi. The three story pavilion with a dance floor attracted a lot of entertainers, like Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra.

"The pool did bad financially last year. You all are charged with a chance to save it," Kenova Mayor Ric Griffith announced to employees Thursday night. It was a pep talk to the employees on the verge of another season for Dreamland.

The city and corporate sponsors gave thousands of dollars to open the pool this year and renovate the filtration system, bathroom, changing area, concession stand and skate park area.

Griffith says with more volunteers and donations, Dreamland can be a tourist attraction once again. He says the long term plan is to redo the pavilion.

Dreamland Pool opens Saturday and closes around Labor Day.

I work at the pool and this year, things are going to be a lot different! You don't have to worry about dirty water or anything like that. Things will be kept clean. Hopefully a lot of people will start coming again! I remember going when I was a kid and the place being packed!

Sharon, there will be adult supervision this year. One will be in the concession stand at all times. Things will be better this year! Lisa, it was actually two years ago when the HD shut it down several times.

Sharon, while I emphasize with you and agree wholeheartedly with what you are saying but until the State restores the parent’s ability to discipline their children properly as they could in your day (put the fear of God in them), use the power of the rod until they learn to respect themselves as well as others around them, then you get what you saw; anarchy. We as a society are reaping what we sowed! By the way folks, don’t buy into the “beating” propaganda. I don’t know any parents who love their children who would “beat” them for anything. However, a few spankings go a long way especially between the ages of 3 & 6. If you don’t get them on the right path during this age then you’re basically $%^&@!

I remember Dreamland at it's finest..the elegant dances in progress as we drove past and could hear the beautiful music. When my children were youngsters I took them regulary and it was very well organized and clean. However, I took my three teenage granddaughters there last year and, although glad it was still open, sadden at the conditions and the lack of adult supervision. I don't believe I have ever heard such profanity used so loudly and without any restrictions or the threats of fights with loud verbal exchanges. We stayed the day but I did not take them back again, nor will I, until some responsible adults are present and enforcing some common sense rules in a family oriented situation. I hope the changes that are being made will include some attention in this area.

Last year the Health Department came and shut it down several times during the year due to different reasons. Lets all hope this year Dreamland can keep it self clean.
