HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Huntington Police Lt. Brenda Wamsley nearly was struck by a pickup truck driver Monday afternoon as she was ticketing another vehicle in West Huntington.

Lucian Cox, the pickup truck driver, was arrested on multiple counts. Dispatchers say he was believed to be intoxicated.

The incident occurred about 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Madison Avenue and 22nd Street. The passenger-side mirror of the pickup truck clipped a mirror on the motorcycle Wamsley was using, according to police.

Wamsley escaped injury, and Cox has since been released from custody.

Cops stand in peoples way (while doing the only job they will do which is ticketing)acting cocky and daring people to hit them. I am surprised it doesn't happen more.

The news report says BELIEVED to be intoxicated. - Two things wrong with this: 1. - Drivers do not have to subject themselves to a sobriety test. 2. - "Believed to be" is nothing more than hearsay. The police or any news reporter could say "Believed to be ANYTHING". This is biased and wrong. I think most times, the police are "believed to be" wrong.

I am not familiar w/ the location where this particulr incident occurred; however, I have seen, on numerous occassions, a police office having pulled over someone and they are in a bad location. For instance, they are are a curve, or they are simply IN THE ROAD. Personally, I don't think people should be pulled over on the interstate. Drivers go too fast. 60 or 70 is pretty standard for the speed limit, but lots of drivers go well beyond that--80-90 mph. How easily it could happen that a person be pulled over for some sort of a violation (or even a minor fendor bender) and another driver look away from the road for just a min. and get hit & possibly killed. I think that if a police officer is going to pull someone over on the interstate, the person should driver to the nearest exit and pull over in a SAFE location.

now they know why motorist park their cars with wheels touching the curb, because idiots drive by and knock the mirrors off, stop ticketing people trying to protect their property!

LT.WAMSLEY IS A WONDERFUL PERSON WHO TAKES HER JOB SERIOUS. I USE TO BE A DISPATCHER AT THE 911 CENTER AND I WORKED WITH HER HUSBAND JIM. THE BOTH OF THEM ARE REALLY GOOD PEOPLE. THIS IS TO "WHAT".. YES, THEY HAVE TESTS THEY PERFORM. THE WAY IT IS ALWAYS PRESENTED BEFORE IT EVER GOES TO COURT IS THAT THEY ARE BELIEVED TO BE INTOXICATED..THE COURT DECIDES BASED ON EVIDENCE IF THEY ARE ACTUALLY IN FACT INTOXICATED AT THE TIME OF THE STOP. BUT THAT IS A FORMALITY THING WITH THE GOOD "OLE" LAW SYSTEM. ALSO I NOTICED THAT IT SAID THE DISPATCHERS MADE THE NOTE THAT HE WAS POSSIBLY INTOXICATED NOT THE POLICE. THIS IS TO "FEDDY"..NOWHERE IN THE ARTICLE IT SAID HE WAS A BAD PERSON. HE MAY LIKE TO STOP TO HAVE A BEER AFTER WORK, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT AT ALL. IT IS A PROBLEM WHEN HE MAKES A DECISION TO DRIVE AFTER CONSUMING ALCOHOL. HOW WOULD YOU BE RESPONDING TO THIS ARTICLE IF HE HAD HIT ONE OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS AFTER CONSUMING ALCOHOL. LT.WAMSLEY HAS A JOB TO DO, SHE DID HER JOB..

Why did this make the news?

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 19, 2008 at 04:37 PM
skip holbrook's bald head contributed to the sun glare that caused him to swerve nearly striking the officer as she ticketed another motorist.

2 problems with this story why is he only believed to be intoxicated dont they have a test to tell or is this just an excuse and the other problem here in ohio they have a law you are to move to the left when you see a cop with a car pulled over but then they will pull you over for left of center if they haven't met their qouta for the month

I'm glad Lt Wamsley is OK! She definitely had an angel on her shoulder! Another drunk driver out on the streets! I've seen so MANY videos (dash cams in the cruisers caught them) on national tv where an officer will be ticketing someone on the side of the road and some idiot will come right AT them! Some have been lucky enough to see them in time to jump out of the way and some haven't unfortunately and have been hit! I've always wondered what on earth made all these people just head right towards the officer? Are they crazy & so mean when they see an officer they go after THEM? Are they drunk/drugged? like this one apparently. Are they just rubbernecking & careless? What is WRONG with people? What gets me is that these officers out there doing their jobs, are the same officers any of us may need some day when we wreck, a relative wrecks, or we're abused etc and these officers may save OUR lives or someone we love so SLOW DOWN & watch out for them folks!

All I can say is, it's a good thing for that driver that it wasn't B.J.'s own ride!
