UPDATE: Thursday @ 2:36am
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (WSAZ) -- The Missouri State Highway Patrol announced Thursday that it has arrested suspected serial bank robber Joseph Young.

According to a news release from the MSHP, Young was pulled over at about 8:00 a.m. on Interstate 44 after he was seen driving slowly in a red Dodge Neon with a registration violation.

The MSHP says a computer check of the of his plate revealed multiple felony violations on Young, and he was arrested without any trouble.

During a news conference Thursday afternoon, Charleston Police announced that Young had $16,000 in cash with him--and he said he had been gambling.

His car was going so slowly because it was having transmission problems.

UPDATE: Thursday @ 11:22am
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Charleston Police are reporting that Joseph Young, reported to be the "plaid shirt robber," was arrested Thursday morning in Missouri.

Television station KSPR is reporting that Young was picked up during a traffic stop on I-44. They say he was driving too slowly.

Charleston Police are holding a 2:30 p.m. news conference Thursday. Keep clicking on WSAZ.com for the latest information.

UPDATE: Thursday @ 10:23pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The search is on for Joseph Young and slowly we are learning more about the serial bank robbery suspect.

His family says he worked on a dairy farm and they are stunned that the FBI is trying to track him down because they thought he'd learned his lesson after a previous conviction. He’s also been connected to another robbery in Virginia -- making him wanted in six states.

It was one observant person from Charleston who helped crack this case. The search for Young actually started Wednesday night when police made contact with him in his driveway and he took off. He ditched his truck in a wooded area and jumped into some kind of body of water.

Police said Young got away with $50,000 in the bank robberies he was connected to in Charleston.

UPDATE: Thursday @ 12:02pm
Charleston Police just wrapped up a news conference where we learned the suspect, Joseph Young, has been convicted of bank robbery before. He served 5 years in prison on that charge.

He's also been recently linked to another bank robbery in Lexington City, Virginia, and detectives say the number of robberies will continue to grow now that they have his name. In fact, they tell us they could reach as many as 40 to 50 by the end of the investigation.

Police say Young has been link to at least three bank robberies in the Kanawha Valley.

The latest happened Tuesday morning at the Summit Community Bank just off Corridor G. In April, police say Young robbed a bank in St. Albans. In June, he hit another bank in Kanawha City.

However, police tell us Young has not been charged in the St. Albans robbery yet.

Detectives say in all Young got away with more than $50,000 just in these three robberies.

UPDATE Thursday @ 10:31am
Charleston Detectives say the FBI and the Missouri State Police were involved in a pursuit with Young Wednesday night and early Thursday morning in Rogersville. He was driving the black truck that he was spotted in the day he allegedly robbed the Summit Community Bank.

Detectives say Young eventually ditched the truck near a wooded area and took off. The manhunt continues at this hour.

According to the criminal complaint, witnesses spotted the suspect's truck on the west side just a few hours before the robbery at the Summit Community Bank.

A witness saw the truck around 6:15am Thursday near Kelley's Men Shop on Pennsylvania Avenue. The witness also told police he saw the truck stop in front of the First Bank of Charleston. He also used that bank's ATM.

The complaint also states when Young robbed the bank he handed a teller a note stating, "Robbery, Give Me All Your Money, Look Straight Ahead, I do have a weapon and will use it."

Then, he started giving verbal commands, "This is a robbery, give me all your money, I want big bills." He told another teller "You too, give me all your money." The complaint says Young put the money in his pockets and left the bank.

Keep clicking on WSAZ.com for the very latest information.

THURSDAY UPDATE
Charleston Police have released the name of the man they've dubbed the "Plaid Shirt Robber."

Investigators say Joseph Paul Young is from Rogersville, Missouri. A tip helped police make the identification.

Charleston Police will hold a news conference at 11:30am Thursday to release more information.

Detectives say the number of bank robberies he's committed is climbing.

Keep clicking on WSAZ.com for more information.

UPDATE @ 8:35pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Charleston Police have released new surveillance pictures of the serial bank robbery suspect they say went inside the nearby Wal-Mart prior to Tuesday morning's holdup.

Police tell WSAZ.com the suspect entered the store about an hour and a half before the robbery, but did not buy anything. Instead, he went into the bathroom, then left. As you can see in the pictures below, he is not wearing his trademark plaid shirt or coat.

Also, the pictures show another view of the suspect's pickup truck. It's believed to be a black 2008 Chevy Silverado. The name "Chevy" is written in gold lettering on the back of the truck.

Here's a look at the newest surveillance images. Click to enlarge.

UPDATE@6 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- He's called the plaid shirt robber, but what else do we know about the man accused of at least 20 bank robberies across the country during the last several months, including one yesterday in our area?

"This person is going to slip up," said FBI Agent Supervisor Jay Bartholomew. "They always do."

On Tuesday, however, there was no slip up -- just a clean getaway from the suspect’s 20th bank robbery nationwide and his third in the Kanawha Valley.

"The fact that he is so blatant, that he is not wearing a mask would suggest to me he is from outside the area and feels confident that no one will be able to ID him in this area," said Dr. Terry Fenger, a forensic scientist at Marshall University.

Fenger said the plaid shirt robber's track record could mean he's a traveler by trade, possibly a truck driver. On Tuesday, a black truck served as the robber's getaway vehicle.

Bartholomew said authorities capture about 75 percent of serial robbers nationally and referred to their crimes as "a terrible way to make a living."

But despite attention in five states, the suspect is not stopping. Fenger said not seeing or hearing about a gun during these robberies is positive, which may come as small consolation to bank tellers the robber has frightened.

UPDATE @ 11:33am
Sergeant S.A. Cooper with the Charleston Police Department says investigators believe this bank robbery suspect is tied to similar robberies from West Virginia to South Dakota, including but not limited to Minnesota, Ohio, and Kentucky.

Cooper says the suspect's M.O. is to bounce from state to state--and they do not believe he will stop until he's caught.

Police are asking for the public's help to identify the suspect.

"If we have his name, we'll have him," said Cooper.

If you have any information, call the Charleston Police at (304) 348-6480.

UPDATE @ 10:47am
Police have released a surveillance picture of the man they believe robbed the Summit Community Bank Tuesday morning. This picture is from a bank robbery in Lexington, Kentucky.

Police say this man is behind nearly 20 bank robberies across the country. Investigators also believe this is the same man who robbed the City National Bank in St. Albans and the City National Bank in Kanawha City earlier this year. The crime spree started back in June of 2007.

UPDATE @ 9:50am
Police say the truck pulled over leaving Southridge was not the suspect vehicle. They are continuing to look for the suspect.

UPDATE @ 9:46am
Police have stopped a pickup truck matching the description of the suspect vehicle near an exit to the Southridge Shopping Center (see the pictures above & below). Officers have not determined whether this is the suspect yet.

Posted by: chuck on Aug 22, 2008 at 08:09 AM
i just wanna say i wasnt picking on the police in general i have much respect for the guys and girls of law enforcement they risk their lives everyday what i am trying to point out is the time it takes them to respond to a call usually they get to the scene long after the suspect has left or they dont show up at all why do i say this is because we have called for the police several times about prowlers and suspicious vehicles in the area and they responde an hour or more later and usually they dont even take a report they just say well we will patrol the area and they leave and we dont see them anymore until someone else either gets broken into or robbed or they chase someone away from their property this has been an ongoing problem in our area and in other areas to what is sad is the cities and counties just dont have the funds or officers to respond to every call quicker i pray noone gets hurt or killed trying to apprehend this person thats all

Hey Laura, its the FBI looking for him not just our local police. This guy is robbing banks all over the country and not just in our area. So that is a FBI thing. And last I heard the FBI is pretty good about catching people.

TO WORST BANK EVER: The reason that you are a former customer is because you probably couldn't keep your account out of the negative. I assume the bank charged you off due to failure to pay what owe. I bank at both locations, and have always received outstanding service. A bank robbery is serious situation, and lives were in danger. This is not the time or place to bash the employees. Suntrust can have you. Especially since you are showing the caliber of person you are.

Posted by: Bank ? on Aug 21, 2008 at 02:49 PM
I work in a bank and the reason the cameras are placed at higher levels is so the lens doesn't get shot out or covered up during a robbery. The robber would just have to throw a shirt over it or hold up something and you would have no film. Sometimes a far away shot is better than nothing at all. Good surveillance is definiely helpful.

Posted by: cin on Aug 21, 2008 at 02:27 PM
dang if i had his money i'd get me different truck and a new shirt

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 21, 2008 at 02:03 PM
he has robbed banks from at least 6 states and WV figured out his name ill give them credit for that

Glad to see that you guys finally put his full name online instead of YOUNG. You guys really need editors.

Posted by: Laura on Aug 21, 2008 at 01:17 PM
people, need you be reminded THAT the police in this state can't solve murders that even have witnesses much less catch a robber that roams from state to state.

Posted by: bob on Aug 21, 2008 at 01:14 PM
Good one Sherlock, I doubt the FBI has ever been in Louisville.

Posted by: worst station from a to z on Aug 21, 2008 at 12:21 PM
Is his entire name "YOUNG?" Come on guys.

Posted by: How on Aug 21, 2008 at 12:06 PM
Explain to me how a witness could have seen him thrusday morning in Charleston and the law chasing him wed.night and thru. morning in Missouri something dont jive unless he has a twin or some hilljack just wants to be able to say yep i seed him at the bank

Posted by: Kathy S on Aug 21, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Did this guy REALLY think he was going to continue on like this with nothing on his face to disguise his identity and NOT get ID's somewhere along the line? Talk about STUPID CRIMINAL story! Well at least he was smart enough not to use duct tape!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 21, 2008 at 11:21 AM
Come On! 20 Banks now! This guy doesn't seam to be to worried about geting caught he don't really even try to hide his face. WHY can't we catch him? Hope he gets caught soon.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 21, 2008 at 09:28 AM
Seems to me he likes the KY area more than most. Also he has hit 3 of the 7 banks in KY, in the Lousville area. I bet if the FBI goes to Louisville, they will find him.

Posted by: Get the facts straight!!! on Aug 21, 2008 at 09:21 AM
TO WORST BANK EVER: I have several accounts with this bank. I like this bank, they have never done me wrong. If I ever have a problem, they are always willing to help. They know me by name, & greet me when I walk in. I have never received that type of respect from any bank in my life. Now on to one of the videos listed above with the story. Someone mentioned this guy may be a truck driver. The reporter went on to say this was true, due to the video surveillance showing his chevy. Dear, I don't think the man meant a pickup truck. He was referring to the fact that this robber is traveling from state to state. Therefore, he may be a professional truck driver, as in an 18 wheeler. Oh, and to Chuck, if you read the story again, you will see that it states the video shows him in Wal-Mart BEFORE he robbed the bank.

Posted by: Bill on Aug 21, 2008 at 08:36 AM
I think Sherlock Holmes has it all figured out. However to Chuck - Leave the police alone, they don't come tell you how to cook hamburgers while you're at work. I'm sure they checked Wal-Mart and several other businesses at Southridge to see if they could get a better picture of him, his truck, or maybe which way he escaped.

Posted by: maybe on Aug 20, 2008 at 07:51 PM
maybe they should check for hunting licenses in sd and mn... maybe the guy likes to bow hunt.. His times in both states are around the time of bow season out there...

Posted by: chuck on Aug 20, 2008 at 06:59 PM
how did the police track this man to walmart for 1 thing and why didnt they apprehend him there i aint a rocket scientist but if they had information that he was in walmart sounds like they were to slow acting on information i hope noone gets hurt or killed while this person is on the loose doesnt make sense to me that he has traveled all over the local area and other states and still is on the loose he must have been taking lessons from the artrip robbery spree hope they get him soon cuz i think he is becoming more of a menace to the publics safety everyday he is out there and when he is finally apprehended is he going to surrender quietly or worse maybe take hostages or worse end up in a shoot out with law enforsment and maybe killing innocent people when cornered

Posted by: Me on Aug 20, 2008 at 05:15 PM
They need to try and get the license plate number of the truck.. If they do that they could definetly figure out who this man is.

Posted by: mark on Aug 20, 2008 at 04:42 PM
You'd think a good detective could blow that picture up a zillion times and get the lic. #.

Posted by: Sue on Aug 20, 2008 at 09:28 AM
Most retail stores have great cameras too that can be moved around to get people's faces, look inside bags, etc. I don't see why a financial institution would not invest in the same.

Posted by: SHolmes on Aug 20, 2008 at 09:22 AM
As you can see it appears that this fellow has been stealing. Thats fact #1. Fact #2...Since he has been doing this for a while, no doubt he wears plaid when it is cold and "T" shirts when it is warm. Fact #3 Since he moves around so much he must be staying in motels because trucks suck to sleep in or maybe pulling a camper. Fact #4 My guess would be that since he is a strong looking fellow that is handsome (I like girls), he is traveling with a beautiful woman that is hooked on drugs and he is stealing money to take care of her. He drops her off at a Motel and she gets a room. After obtaining his ill gotten booty, he rushes back to the motel, gets his woman and goes to bars getting into unspeakable sins of the flesh. Its all elementary my dear Watson.

Posted by: its amazing on Aug 20, 2008 at 09:21 AM
It is amazing to me that if you go to mapquest and directions and start plugging in the names of the towns he has allegedly robbed, they are all basically in one big loop and stay on the interstate systems. The majority of the towns that he has allegedly robbed appear to be directly along the interstates he is traveling. Some appear to be in a straight line while others bounce back and forth. He has got to be using the same routes.

Posted by: Pablo on Aug 20, 2008 at 08:49 AM
You would think with the money (billions and billions of dollars) the Walton family has that they could afford better security cameras. Why can't we see quality pictures, very much like we see on WSAZ News on television? And why are the cameras usually mounted on the ceiling. Vultures or hawks may be used to identifying things from this veiw, but it isn't that good for humans. With a cap pulled low it would be hard for a mother to identify her own son from pictures taken from this angle. Stores and banks need to be more concerned for their employess (from robbery) than from these ceiling cameras that are most likey trying to catch employee theft. Keep the ceiling cameras but include some placed at lower elevations. And please, get a decent camera; one that takes focused pictures and not the "fuzzy" things we see here from Walmart.

Posted by: MrObvious on Aug 20, 2008 at 01:23 AM
If you want the best surveillance cameras, go to a casino, now they know how to do it. There was a show here recently that demonstrated how good their systems were. In fact, it said that they were switching to new HD cameras in some areas that would have amazing detail. Of course the banks cannot afford those.

Posted by: Worst Bank Ever on Aug 19, 2008 at 10:28 PM
As a former account holder there, its nice to know that Walmart has better surveillance video these days than a bank does. There is a reason I switched to SunTrust.

Posted by: Ron on Aug 19, 2008 at 08:34 PM
They do make and sell counter top cameras, the banks are just too CHEAP to invest in better cameras!

Posted by: Jeff on Aug 19, 2008 at 07:23 PM
The reason he's robbing banks is to be able to put gas in that gas guzzeling truck he drives. He buy a Toyota, all the robberies would stop.

Posted by: Beth ann on Aug 19, 2008 at 04:35 PM
Seems to me that it is a good picture of him, lets hope someone recognizes him and turns him in.

Posted by: Mike on Aug 19, 2008 at 02:57 PM
Why not put cameras right at the counter pointing right at them that would almost deter them form robbing a bank.

Posted by: TIM on Aug 19, 2008 at 11:42 AM
WHY IS IT SO HARD FOR THE POLICE TO CATCH THIS GUY!!!20 OTHER BANKS AND STILL COUNTING!!!SOMEBODY RUN THIS GUY OVER WHEN THEY CATCH HIM, DO US ALL A FAVOR.

Posted by: Pablo on Aug 19, 2008 at 11:37 AM
I wonder why banks and other businesses, such as stores, can't place cameras where they are eye-level with the face of customers? It seems that eveyone who robs is always wearing a hat of some type and with the camera located at ceiling level, doesn't make for the best possible picture. A camera, at eye level, just a foot or two left or right of the clerk would do wonders in the identifying of robbers.
