HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- There could be a snag in Cabell County’s efforts to build a new middle school.

It turns out, one of the favored sites for the project may be sold to someone else.

Cabell County Schools had expressed interested in the University Heights property.

It’s the parcel of land Marshall University owns next to Walmart on Route 60, the WV State Police Barracks and the Prestera Center.

We're told school board members will now attend a public hearing scheduled for August 29 regarding the proposed sale of the property to the Prestera Center.

The MU Board of Governors is having that hearing. A public notice says the sale price would $1,700.000.

The school board is also planning to hold an emergency meeting Friday morning at 10:00am. Board members will also tour the three proposed sites. The original plan was to tour all three sites sometime next week.

Cabell County is trying to build a new middle school that will combine Enslow and Beverly Hills schools.

Two other possible construction sites include the current location of the Vo-tech Center and the Veteran’s Memorial Field House.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Cabell County School Board is one small step closer to deciding where to build a new consolidated middle school.

The board met Tuesday night to evaluate 13 potential sites. The board is considering building a new middle school that would consolidate Beverly Hills and Enslow Middle Schools.

Assistant Superintendent Mike O’Dell and ZMM architect Dave Ferguson told the board the top 3 sites were Marshall’s University Heights property along Route 60, property at the Cabell County Career Center, and Veterans Memorial Field House property.

The school system will now conduct further sites studies on the 3 properties. Board members are expected to tour all three sites in the next couple of weeks.

I say good riddens! I lived there for 2 years and you know what I got? Headache thats what. My car was broke into 5 times and MUPD's solution was move the car to a different parking lot. My car was shot with a .45 calibur handgun and the bullet stopped at my daughters car seat. Still MU did nothing. $630 a month in rent and we did not recieve anything on campus students got. No food plan, cell phones, or internet. We paid for all that. They also said they were building a play ground for the kids which they didn't. I had a broken toilet for 3 weeks and the buildings are infested with roaches. MU is not the angel place people thinks it is. All they want is money and thats all this deal means to then they do not care about the students at all or they would offer more academics and be less sports oriented. Yes I am a MU student. No I do not agree with the way they conduct themselves.

Ok, I just recently moved out of University Heights, as Im a Marshall student with a family, what they arent telling you is that Heights is Marshall's Family housing, and by trying to sell the property they are putting innocent Marshall Family's out of a place to live its a real cheap shot on Marshall's part because they charge 630 dollars a month for a two bedroom apartment in that complex, then turn around and sell the property without even informing their students that they wont have a place to live soon ? Its outragous!

1.) Down with eminent domain. 2.) "Consolidation" is a four-letter word!

Thank you Patsy!

This sounds like some a ploy to make a quick judement on this property. Mr. Smith and Mr.Alexander did not research this property. If they had been in communication with MU like they said they had, they would have known that Prestera was making an offer for this property. This smells fishy to me. The CCBO knows that there are many people demanding the school be built in the city. By creating this situation they might try to bypass the people opposing this sight. Why not allow the drug rehab center there away from the city where it already has enough drug traffic. This would be a great sight for the rehab center because it is near stores and the state police station. We want schools in our city not drug rehab centers!!!! lets build something positive in the city like the new middle school!!!!!

Thank God for Prestera. I hope they are able to purchaes the property. We need to build the school in the city limits. Wake up CCBOE Prestera has been established in that area for years.I hope they get it!!

What about the property where the old Emmons Elementary stood? That would be an ideal location. And it seems such a waste that the property (already owned by the School Board) is just sitting there! Hey Board Members - get a clue!

Good Lord...Why doesn't Cabell county just build one big super school and send everyone there? What a joke!!

Posted by: Mark on Aug 21, 2008 at 12:08 PM
Geez, How difficult is it to call Marshall and ask if the property was available? I'm sure it there was a contract to sell it to Prestera, the CCBofE could have directed the search in other directions. Who dropped the ball on this one?

It would be a real shame if they tear down the field house just so the school can be in the city limits.

Just make sure the site selected has owners who are willing to sell. This taking of land, from people who do not want to sell, must stop.
