HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A water main break at an administrative building at Marshall University is apparently the cause of an explosion, school officials say.

It happened at about 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

911 dispatchers say it apparently came from the Old Main building and that the building was being evacuated.

Bill Bissett, spokesperson for Mashall University, tells WSAZ.com the explosion was apparently caused by a water main break in the basement on the west side of the building.

So far, there have been no reports of any injuries.

That boom was the football team exploding into the 2008 season. Watch out NCAA, the dark horse herd is coming...

The day Old Main comes down, is the day I chain myself to front door and scream "If you want this building gone, you'll have to take me with it!!" I'm sure I'd be bulldozed too...

As long as WV puts people like Joe Manchin or Russ Weeks in office, you will continue to loose everything that is important to the state. They will replace Old Main with a coal mining trailer. This November, vote JAMES DAVIS as Governor and he will preserve WV historical land marks.

Posted by: Surprised it hasnt been razed for a bar! on Aug 24, 2008 at 06:03 PM
i'm surprised that h'ton hasn't already ripped it out and replaced it with another BAR right on the front lawn of MU - well might as well, they have bars all up and down the "Marshall Corridor" AND right up to their doorstep literally anyway! THAT's all H'ton's interested in building and putting in anymore - BARS and "clubs" so why not put one right ON MU's front lawn since they're right up to it anyhow!

You're right, b. Ashland would have leveled Old Main years ago and replaced it with a faux 19th century Yuppie nightmare.

Also they need to move all the records & admin offices from Old Main because it IS so old. It's dank, dark and has so many problems like this simply because of it's age I hope none of the records were damaged this time by the water. We're lucky if they weren't. MU needs a bright new bldg for these offices & records and then just maintain/restore Old Main for her historical value to MU and to Huntington Marshall's campus and the City would NOT be the same without Old Main so we MUST keep her BUT she's earned a rest! So build a new home for the offices, administration and records soon MU and then let her have the deserved rest she needs as THE landmark & flagship for Marshall

EXACTLY "B"! VERY well said! They're tearing down all these really beautiful old houses & buildings, replacing them with parking lots! Huntington & Guyandotte had such beautiful old houses that were once part of plantations. I didn't know that until the paper recently did some stories about them & by that time, most of them had been torn down! H'ton WAS the Jewel City of the River years and years ago What a shame they're destroying all this rich history in both H'ton & Guyandotte instead of embracing it & using it to attract tourists as well as those of us who live here who love history & historical things So much of the local history about not only the Civil War but the Revolutionary War is not even taught to kids here much less told to us older residents & all the old folks are gone now so we can't here it from those who lived it THANK YOU 4 posting this "B". You are SO right! I hope someone listens to you & the rest of us who agree with you!

old main is such a historical and beautiful building i hope that it is not too damaged. marshall, huntington, and west virginia need to embrace their history and keep some of the old stuff around instead of destroying it for new multi million dollar "see what we have" buildings- the old can be a big "see what we have" draw too, just look at civil war virginia and other historical areas. we need to embrace it!
