Hurricane, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- As the dog days of summer wind down, some lucky pups now have a new place to play!

Sunday, pet owners helped dedicate a new dog park in Putnam County. It's the first of two dog parks being built in the area, and dog owners say the new parks are a welcome addition.

"It's like they look in your soul, you know?" said Joe Haynes, Putnam County Commissioner. "They just touch a part of you that nothing else has that same feeling. People's dogs are part of their family."

The second dog park is set to open in Eleanor by the first of October.

Heather, I would like to try explain this great sport to you but it would be an exercise in futility. You are the kind of person that is the smartest person in the room -- virtually unteachable. If you could please come down from your high horse; worst case scenario you may learn something. I know stereotyping people and calling names gives you a brief feeling of superiority but a more permanent solution would better suffice. Consider psychotherapy. Your friend Luther.

oh heather your comment contradicts itself. read that last line that you wrote and try to tell me that you know where it's going. even though its probably a waste of time i gotta point out that i seriously doubt you know anything about the great sport you speak of. i know this because your ignorance is clearly displayed in your last comment. you try to sound intelligent with that post, you really do, but you only manage to look pitiful with that comment. do us a favor heather, know your role and don't stray too far from the simple topics.

What a total waste of my tax dollars! If you want a doggie park, build one in your back yard! Most kids don't even have access to a community park. Is there something wrong with this picture? We have now put dogs in front of children! Gee whiz, what a crock!

Last time I checked, dogs don't kill each other because it's their "purest form", they kill to eat (and 90% of the time it is not another dog that they eat ) LOL If you want to make "thought provoking" statements, at least make sure there is at least a correct thought in the statement. But I'm positive, that you distinctly sit at your computer to make remarks that tick people off. Problem is, anyone who has a level of education higher than that of high school diploma knows you are moron. If you strip anything down to its' purest form it is going to be one of survival, not a need to kill everything that's around it or what it has been "trained" to kill specifically.. (i.e. a dog would be as likely to kill (or attack) a bird, squirrel, deer, human as it would be another dog if it was stripped down to its' "purest" form.. Unfortunately, dog fighters only train their dog to kill things THEY say to kill and that's not a pure form... LOL...that's about as pure as sewer water. EDUCATION PAYS!

In the sport that you're speaking of, the problem works itself out. One is never faced with the choice of what to do with an athlete that is performing at an unsatisfactory level. Instead, things just work themselves out.

I was at the opening for the dog park. I loved it and my dog loved it. The only thing I think it need is a water fountain for the dogs. That being said, someone needs to take the time to do a little research. The dog park was not built on wv tax dollars. Someone was kind enough to use thier hard earned money to create this nice dag park.

I have asked this question before but Luther never answers. What happens when a dog does not perform to your satisfaction. I know some people that shoot their dogs if they lose, what about you?

Luther..you are a nimrod. Dogs don't die when they race...dogs don't die when they gather in a park together.....they DO however die when competing against one another. That is b/c man is mistreating these dogs and not using them for what they were inteded for. It is an act violence and no decent human would want to sit around and watch two dogs who are mal-nutritioned fight to the death....and all for money?? What an irresposible way to make a few dollars. I take it you are a Michael Vick fan?

I think we need to worry about parks for children first.

why isn't there a dog park in portsmouth oh? what can we do to get on started?

This isn't really a comment that I want posted...I actually am just asking if this is truly a public forum? I understand that comments with bad language and such can't be posted...but what about a simple comment that abides by the 'terms of use' policy? I ask because I have posted a few comments that I think are very thought provoking, and I want others to comment back...instead, for some reason, many of the posts aren't making it to the website. Thank you.

Glad I'm nowhere near a dog park. I see enough dog-poo and barking from my redneck neighbors as it is.

I'm SO glad our tax dollars went to a dog park and not to fix the city streets. Awesome!

I think Portsmouth, Ohio needs a place for people and their dogs to walk, run & play together. Seems like everywhere I go in the Portsmouth area - I see signs "NO DOGS ALLOWED ON OR OFF LEASHES". Nice to have Petland here - dogs can shop with their owners there. Walmart doesn't even allow dogs. I can go out of town to malls - and take my dog in his stroller. Come on Portsmouth - let's get "pet friendly"!

I wish Huntington could get a dog park. Congrats Putnam Co.

Dogs can be organized and brought together in a park and it's fine. Dogs can be organized and compete against one another in a racetrack and it's fine. Yet when dogs are organized and compete against one another in it's purest form, it's illegal. Is it because the state can't get any of the money? If so, it should be sanctioned and allow the government to get their share! Let's legalize dog competing.
