HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- West Virginia American Water has issued a boil water advisory for customers in parts of Huntington and Barboursville.

The areas affected in Huntington are: along 16th Street Road, Sheline Road, Hughes Branch, and Blankenship Road.

In Barboursville the areas include: Alternate Route 10, Route 10, Blankenship Road, and Jeffrey Drive.

The company says crews are working to fix a leak that caused the service disruption.

Customers should boil their water before consumption until further notice. Customers are asked to bring water used for drinking, cooking, and brushing teeth to a full boil for a minimum of one minute before using it.

West Virginia American Water also recommends the following steps:

-Throw away beverages and ice cubes if made with tap water
-Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking
-Do not swallow water while you are showering or bathing
-Provide pets with boiled water after cooling
-Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water
-Most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms
-Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries.
