GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Skip Holtz followed his biggest victory at East Carolina with an even more impressive one.

Jonathan Williams had two short touchdown runs, quarterback Patrick Pinkney was nearly perfect and the Pirates routed No. 8 West Virginia 24-3 on Saturday for their third straight win over a ranked team.

Pinkney was 22-for-28 for 236 yards with a touchdown for East Carolina (2-0), which opened the season with a last-minute upset of then-No. 17 Virginia Tech.

This one was decided much earlier. The Pirates never trailed, kept Pat White in check, outgained West Virginia 386-251 and were in control from start to finish.

They cruised to their first upset of a top-10 team since the Steve Logan-led team stunned then-No. 9 Miami 27-23 on Sept. 23, 1999, in a game played 90 miles west in Raleigh because of Hurricane Floyd-related damage.

Where did you learn to spell, justr me? Oh, right, let me guess--WVU? Jealous? Don't make me laugh! And by the way--I DO cheer for Ohio State. At least they have some class. Once again, another "wonderful" Mountaineer fan proves why I feel the way I do about WVU!!!!

Posted by: justr me on Sep 11, 2008 at 01:28 PM
What is the matter with you Marshall fans. You talk about a bunch of jerks. Did you see their score of last game. Pityful. You all are just upset because you all cant win a game. With all of all your comments about W.vu You must be awful jealous. or wait a minute JUST PLAIN STUPID.You all sound like a bunch of gets from Marshall. You better start ruiting for some one else How about OHIO STATE. Just keep you darn mouths shut.

michigan will win more games this year than wvu!

Posted by: booger on Sep 10, 2008 at 02:15 PM
Mason co Herd fan, I'm the same way. I used to be a HUGE WVU fan when I was a kid. Then they kept losing. Then they lost some more. And the whole time, the fans were jerks. Real ugly, spastic, jerk-wads. I was embarrassed at every game, the way our fans acted, and the way the opposing fans would look at them. Then came the ND/Fiesta bowl debacle. After that, after seeing the way the fans were, I decided I wanted to be represented by more class than a bunch of morons who never even went to WVU. I chose Marshall. It's still a WV university, but without the rednecks pouring out of the hollars to embarrass me. I feel I picked the right school to attend, and I've never looked back. I was right in choosing MU. Look at the WVU fans; Still act like crybaby jerks. The past 10 months or so proved that. Not all Herd fans have class, but most at least attended MU, and are educated. Most WVU fans aren't. Most of the students up there aren't even from WV. THAT'S why I chose MU. The REAL West Virginia

Posted by: Mason Co. Herd Fan on Sep 9, 2008 at 07:54 PM
I support my Herd --win or lose! I go to all the WVU-MU games, no matter the location. I'll proudly wear my Marshall green just like every other year. I hope I don't get called every 4-letter word in the book because of it!! (in 2006 @ M'town I did) It's the WVU "fans" that have turned me against their team. Their couch burning gives ALL West Virginians a BAD name!

Posted by: Dback on Sep 9, 2008 at 07:48 PM
get prepared for a good ol fashion butt kicking in colorado. I am telly y'all, stewart does not know what he is DOING. This is going to be such a long season.....

Posted by: azmountaineer on Sep 9, 2008 at 07:37 PM
I was impressed with ecu, they have a good team it kinda reminds me of when they beat miami several years ago, and congrats to marshall on their big victory against wisconsin. They are on their way to another conference USA championship!!!

Posted by: Harleys and WVU football on Sep 9, 2008 at 02:46 PM
So it was one game with a lot of freshmen coming in. Pat is still Pat and still great, they just have to start being a team. The offense wasn't protecting Pat at all and the defense were completely wore out when ECU was running out the clock. What do you people expect? I mean really, it's the second game in a new season how do you really know this is indictive of things to come? You don't, so why not at least give them a chance before you throw them under the bus and decide they aren't up to par for losing one game? Don't call yourself a fan unless you're there for the good and the bad.

Posted by: Edna on Sep 9, 2008 at 12:49 PM
So we lost. Who cares why. Stop being sore losers, suck it up. Get ready for next week. We don't need Rod look at how well he is doing at Mich. (lol)

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 9, 2008 at 08:02 AM
Ok lets get one things straight LETSGOMTNEERS is right that this is Coach Stewarts second game and that as time progresses he will become a better coach, and also that this is only the second game and WVU is still capable of having a great season. I completely with him saying that Coach Stewart is a much better coach that Coach Rod... that is the most ridiculus thing I have ever heard. If in 10 years he is a proven winner and one of college footballs elite coaches then you can make that argument, but after 2 games there is no comparison. WVU fans need to grow up and thank Rodriguez for all he did for the WVU program and for the condition in which he left it.

Posted by: JD on Sep 8, 2008 at 10:25 PM
How about those Pirates. Well at least WVU can beat Villanova. That is something you can brag about.

Posted by: ohio guy on Sep 8, 2008 at 09:42 PM
WV WHO? RANKED WHAT? Why do all the trees in Ohio lean toward WV? Because they Suck!

Posted by: frank on Sep 8, 2008 at 08:52 PM
Maybe not this year but Marshall is coming look out WVU

Posted by: North Carolina on Sep 8, 2008 at 07:05 PM
North Carolinaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa raise up take your shirt off and throw those Eers around like a helicopter!! ECU stomped them Eers!!!!!!

Posted by: Jim on Sep 8, 2008 at 03:59 PM
I am a WVU fan, but you can't win ball games by calling White's number allday long, and Devine might lift 400lbs., but he dosen't stand a chance against 300 defensive linemen. Any way go 'EERS

Posted by: Caligula on Sep 8, 2008 at 03:32 PM
MUFANNO1, Marshall almost beat WVU? Really?

Posted by: Big Boi on Sep 8, 2008 at 03:19 PM
I guarantee that WVU will beat Marshall by at least two touchdowns and that WVU fans would beat Marshall fans in a Battle Royale as well. I'll be there with gold on. The only green from Marshall fans will be their dirty teefers.

Posted by: To Goo Eers on Sep 8, 2008 at 02:17 PM
Good point. I was just thinking that. WVU got steamrolled but so did Marshall.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 12:08 PM
I think Coach Stew is a very good assistant coach - Head Coach - well I wanted Terry Bowden) but WVU decided to go with Stew because it was easy and cheap. They banked $4 million from Rod. That team we fielded in Greenville were obviously working on learning the new systems and not at all concerned with winning the game. There was no urgency. Mountaineer fans, it's going to be like Louisville last year - great quarterback new coaches and systems, horrible defense (i just hope better than 6-6). Intensity is imperative.

Posted by: MUFANNO1 on Sep 8, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Muhahahaah! I hate ECU but I hate WVU more. MUHAHAHA. We almost beat you last year and you had slaton and a good coach, and that was in a year we sucked bad. Marshall @ WVU it's on like donkey kong!

Posted by: Goo Eers! on Sep 8, 2008 at 10:56 AM
Funny how Marshall fans are on here posting about WVU's loss...guess their big loss didn't effect them. They always lose so no one really expects anything from them.

Posted by: MUGirl on Sep 8, 2008 at 09:56 AM
Maybe when Stewart leaves, he can take Snyder with him. I was never a big fan of Snyder and the exciting, on your feet, cheering football games I used to attend have suddenly, in the last 4 years, become the most boring football games I've ever seen. It's like watching Ohio State run up the middle every other play...oh what fun. I'm ready for a new coach that known what he's doing to bring excitement back to Herd Football. You know, we used to be the team everyone talked about knocking off the big dogs like Virginia Tech and WVU...it's amazing what good coaching will do for you.

Posted by: booger on Sep 8, 2008 at 09:51 AM
The only thing stunning is that WVU scored at all.....

Posted by: Joe on Sep 8, 2008 at 07:08 AM
Maybe the fans can all throw beer bottles at Stewart like they do the Marshall fans in Morgantown. Classless rednecks.

Posted by: fan on Sep 8, 2008 at 06:35 AM
I watched this game and i seen our players running into each other. it like they didnt know thw game play. coaches u need to work on this cnat the players learn the plays? it was like watching a college team play a high school team. but i have hope. lets see if they can improve next game if not we will lose. like watching abbott and costello

Posted by: lfd on Sep 7, 2008 at 09:51 PM
You can not tackle with your helmet.

Posted by: Caligula on Sep 7, 2008 at 08:51 PM
I am a Marshall Alumni, and I will be a WVU fan until the day I die. Nice try Herd fans. Marshall football is about as exciting as watching paint dry. Tried and true. Go EERS!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 7, 2008 at 07:18 PM
Herd fans are just mad because Marshal can be beat by Pee Wee Football!

Posted by: RoaneCo. on Sep 7, 2008 at 04:58 PM
LETSGOMTNEERS is 100% right. He sounds like he knows football, unlike some of the people posting on here.

Posted by: Daryl on Sep 7, 2008 at 03:34 PM
Only thing that I can say is both of the univeristy's got beat and lets try again, man that hurt!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 7, 2008 at 03:01 PM
They shouldn't be stunned. They're not a top 25 team. Now if their fans could only learn that mullets are no longer in season they might be up to par with everyone else

Posted by: Michelle on Sep 7, 2008 at 02:27 PM
Say what you want....I still love my 'EERS!

Posted by: WVU fans are great entertainment! on Sep 7, 2008 at 01:11 PM
First Rich Rod is god, then he is a bum. Coach "Stew" is best thing since sliced bread and now he is a bum. WVU fans must be the most uneducated football fans in the country.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 7, 2008 at 12:01 PM
who posted LETSGOMTNEERS comment is the first WVU fan that is smart. He is right besides i really dont know about a bowl game for WVU. I enjoyed the game

Posted by: Bob on Sep 7, 2008 at 11:42 AM
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA No. 8 team in the country? Give me a break. WVU fans better get used to being knocked back into reality, because there's at least 2-3 more games like this that are coming...and one could very well be MU. lmao

anybody who watches football is lazy.

I LOVEEEE the comment Chad made below!! That is sooooo the truth!! I am a Marshall Alumni and proud of it!!!!!

Posted by: mike mulligan on Sep 7, 2008 at 10:50 AM
Wait a second. Stewart does not call the plays. he does not know the rules of the game...ah the fumble. He does not run the defense. What the heck does he do? he once said, i am a manger, i put the team together. Is that what we want? A manager? Fire the bum! We need a coach, stewart, not a manager. By the way, he ought to remove his headset because he does not know what is going on. He smiles while we are getting our butt kicked. Great manager. Poor coach.

Posted by: henry on Sep 7, 2008 at 10:46 AM
Oh my goodness! Did you guys read in the paper that none of the WVU coaches saw that fumble and none knew whether to issue a challenge? Guys, I am telling you, coach stewart does not know what he is doing! Once pat told them it was not a fumble, they should have issued a challenge. Did you see where stewart said that he did not know whether to challenge because the refs could not call whether it was a fumble??? My goodness, man, pat is a star, if he says he was down, trust him because you could not see the play and no one in the booth could see it either. What are we paying these coaches for. Well, good bye, we are no longer going to be a power. Todd Graham where art thou? We should have waited before hiring stewart. He is not a coach. rich rod was laughing so hard yesterday it is not even funny. Stewart, if you love us, step down!! Do it now before we are ruined completely!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 7, 2008 at 10:45 AM
HaHaHa!! I Love it!!! Good Job for ECU!! And JJ dont under estimate MU! WVU suxs get over it! ECU pounded WVU with no trouble.. for all the WVU fans go cry about it! It's not the end of the world!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 7, 2008 at 10:43 AM
C-USA is too tough baby!...Go HERD!...oh and the reason WVU lost is easy...it was not coaching...no no no...it was because ECU scored 24 points and WVU only scored 3

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 7, 2008 at 10:19 AM
HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHA i was wondering how long it was gonna take until you guys turned on your favorite new coach...WVU fans have no loyalty...you guys were outplayed...i mean destroyed by a better C-USA team

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 7, 2008 at 09:37 AM
WVU CAN pull it back together if; Defense needs a lot of work before the next game. The offensive line needs work, and most of all the offensive backs need to start tucking the ball in and not holding it out like a bread bag when running with it! They want to look more like superstars then having good ball control. WVU can still be a top team in the nation if they get the bugs worked out before the next game.

Posted by: anonymous on Sep 7, 2008 at 09:17 AM
we all think coach stewart doing a good job for it being a new team. as for coach rod did that cheerleader have your baby yet that got preg.by you.we all very proud to have coach steward then you coach rod at least we can trust coach steward more then we could ever trust you coach rod.

Posted by: wvu fan on Sep 7, 2008 at 09:12 AM
so we lost one game this is anew team this year we going to make some mistakes but coach stewart and the boys are doing a awsome job and we still behind them 100%and are proud.we get them next time goooooooooooowvu

Posted by: true fan on Sep 7, 2008 at 08:28 AM
ALL YOU BANDWAGON FANS WHO JUST LIKE WVU WHEN THEY ARE ARE WINNING AND TALK TRASH WHEN THEY LOSE GO FIND ANOTHER ANOTHER TEAM TO SUPPORT THE STATE DOES NOT NEED YOU. MARSHALL BEATING WVU COME ON GIVE ME A BREAK THEY GOT IT HANDED TO THEM BY WISCONSIN 51 UNANSWERED POINTS COMPARED TO 24-3 LOSS TO EAST CAROLINA LETS SEE HOW MUCH EAST CAROLINA BEATS MARSHALL THATS GOING TO BE INTERESTING.

Posted by: HerdFan on Sep 7, 2008 at 08:07 AM
I was feeling horrible about the Herd only scoring 2 TD's against #11 Wisconsin until listening to WVU only pull off a field goal on unranked ECU (and give up 30). I think this just goes to show that a little hype can go a long way. Like ...a rediculously high preseason ranking.....

Posted by: Scott on Sep 7, 2008 at 05:10 AM
We are back to classic "Nehlen" football. We hired alot of his staff. We are going to have a losing year and at the end of that year we have got to fire Stewart. Coach Rod may have been a money hungry traitor but atleast he coached with intensity

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 7, 2008 at 02:09 AM
Looking at this from out of state with a team that is 2-0 I would think WVU fans are pretty happy that Marshall is still down otherwise they would be in trouble in that one as well.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 7, 2008 at 01:54 AM
It wasn't poor coaching it was weak defense and Pat White didn't throw the football. How many times did you see our linebackers flattened by the hard running ECU backs.

Posted by: LETSGOMTNEERS on Sep 6, 2008 at 11:55 PM
Yes, it was a horrible game for WVU however I think coach Stew is a lot better than Coach Rod. This was ONE game, we WON one and lost ONE. The rest of the season is ahead of us. Maybe this will be our only loss of the season?! Remember this is only Coach Stew's second game with this team. While it may have been a sad day for WVU fans, I still believe that Coach Stew is the man for the job! He's not only a good coach, but he is also a great man. Perhaps he is a bit relaxed, but I would rather be around someone like that than someone that yells constantly, is vulgar and uses a lot of profanity. LETS GO MOUNTAINEERS ~ looking forward to a great WVU season and bowl game

Posted by: jj on Sep 6, 2008 at 11:38 PM
Pretty sad...Marshall would have beat WVU today.

Posted by: mountaineers suck on Sep 6, 2008 at 11:34 PM
wvu is a joke. pat white is a joke. stewart is a joke. wvu would be a decent high school team. if wvu wants to stay a bcs school they need to start scheduling div 3 schools to round out their out of conference schedule. ha ha ha ha ha ha

Posted by: Phil on Sep 6, 2008 at 10:37 PM
O-V-E-R-A-T-E-D !!!!!! WV is for losers!

Posted by: Coach Rod on Sep 6, 2008 at 10:32 PM
WVU will never again be a football power. Hiring Coach Stewart was a poor decision. He was all grins at half time. He cannot coach on this level. If Stewart was a real WVU fan, he'd resign and let WVU find a TRUE head coach.

Posted by: anonymous on Sep 6, 2008 at 10:30 PM
WVU SHOULD FIRE STEWART AND GET SOMEONE IN THERE THAT KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING. WVU IS GOING TO GO FROM THE TOP TO ROCK BOTTOM THIS YEAR!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Eers Fan on Sep 6, 2008 at 10:24 PM
WVU made a terrible decision hiring Bill Stewart. After the Fiesta Bowl win we were thinking with our hearts and not our heads. There is a reason he spent 40 years as an assistant coach. He's not a Div. I coach. At half time, when WVU was losing 17-3, he was grinning. He looked like he'd been watching Andy Griffith re-runs all day. I'm sick of this "Oh shucks" crap. WVU needs an aggressive coach that can think outside of the box and get the team ready to play. Coach Stew is not the right choice. Criticize me if you like, but you'll see over the next few years. WVU is no longer a contender.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 6, 2008 at 10:18 PM
Looks like the Little east is off to a terrible start this year. Just look at the first two weeks league record. Kiss the trophy goodbye White you won't even be a guest in New York this year. So go ahead and take the Web site down it won't help either. Once again no National Title in Morgantown. Maybe in BB yeah right.

Posted by: jeff on Sep 6, 2008 at 10:00 PM
I can not remember the last time we didnt sore a touchdown the D could not get off the field last week against villanova. This could be a vey ugly season unless their is a vast improvement defensively. The O was kept off the field & could never get into a rythem. However the season is young hopefully they can regroup adress the problems and grow. Go Mountaineers

Posted by: Chad on Sep 6, 2008 at 09:57 PM
Give it a few more weeks and the WVU "fans" will be falling off the wagon and cheering for whomever is winning. If you see someone wearing a Marshall hat that means they went to Marshall...If you see someone wearing A WVU hat, that means they went to Walmart!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 6, 2008 at 09:45 PM
Its funny Skip Holtz was going to be interviewed for the head coach. Stewart was an emotional hire. Sadly Pat Whites last year will be horrible. Stewart does not have the intensity for a head coach. AT the half he was all smiles talking to the reporter. If he stays relaxed like this we be lucky to make a gator bowl. Lets see what happens and if he does what he says and steps away if it gets worse.

Posted by: jimmy on Sep 6, 2008 at 09:35 PM
the team lost because of poor coaching and play calling.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 6, 2008 at 09:29 PM
Shall we all burn a couch in honor?

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 6, 2008 at 09:29 PM
man i hate that...NOT!!!! WVU sucks

Posted by: jock on Sep 6, 2008 at 09:29 PM
Anonymous I cannot blame you for laughing. The powers that be made a huge mistake and like me, you know it. I heard Dunlap say we are a young team. that is nonesense! We have our line and our QB and tailback. Dunlap should apologize to the fans for such poor coaching on the part of Stewart. Why does he wear a headset? He says he is a manager..not a coach. We need a coach and he aint it, period!

Posted by: Cooks on Sep 6, 2008 at 09:21 PM
True WVU fans arent going to get upset cause their team lost, of course they played bad, but its the beginning of the season, we should stick behind our team, and not make bad emotional comments while were upset...of course if they win next game, same folks will be rooting and hooping for WVU

Posted by: panchie on Sep 6, 2008 at 08:51 PM
We need a loser leave town game between snyder and stewart. I am a wvu fan and I pray that stewart lose such a game. I always thought he was a loser and this proves it. Stewart should go. he was an emotional hire and you never act when you are emotional.
