WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Sunday marked a major milestone for one church in our region.

It was the 100 Year Celebration for the First Baptist Church of Kenova.

Michael W. Smith, a contemporary Christian singer, grew up in Kenova and attended the church. He had a homecoming as well Sunday.

Almost the same amount of people showed up to celebrate the 100 year anniversary service on Saturday night and Michael wasn't even scheduled to appear. Michael was just part of the worship service and he was there to honor Christ as well. Anyone who was attending the service could tell you Christ was the center of everything that happened. From Jason Lovins, to the Voices in Praise, to Pastor Steve, to Sarah Denman, to Jim Hamer, to Stan Franklin, to Dan Ferguson, they all kept the focus on Christ. First Baptist Kenova is a great place to be right now. Christ is being honored and lives are being changed.

And I am sure that the members of the church just knocked each other out of the way to shake his hand. It is a shame when a celebrity going to church makes news. There was a day when God was the celebrity in church. The hypocrisy is what made me leave the church.

Michael Smith is truly an anointed christian singer/musician. It's exciting that an accomplished person is from the tri-state area.
