UPDATE on Monday, September 22nd
BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Cabell County Sheriff's Department is requesting any business owner or home owner in the Pea Ridge Road area with surveillance video to check the tapes on September 16th for a white man riding a bicycle.

It's the latest request for public help in the investigation of the rape of a teenager last week in Barboursville.

Deputies say the suspect is a white male, in his 20's, medium slender build and short dirty blond hair. The suspect was seen riding a dark in color mountain bike. Deputies also say after the assault took place, the suspect took a brown coach purse with an AT&T Blackberry cell phone and a Green Dot prepaid credit card.

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Police are looking for a man they believe threatened and raped a 17-year-old girl on her way Tuesday morning to a school bus stop.

Officers are looking for a man who they say is in his mid-20s, has blond hair, and had been wearing a black shirt, ball cap and khaki shorts when the incident occurred.

Nearby residents, including Christy Chapman, are extremely concerned about what happened. Chapman said she is keeping a close eye on her young daughter.

"I make sure I know where she's at and, if she's out of the yard, I'll look for her," Chapman said.

Police said the incident happened in the stairway of an apartment building along East Drive in the Pea Ridge area.

According to the police report, the man pulled the girl into a stairway where he grasped her from behind with his arm across her throat. The report states that he told her he would snap her neck if she moved. The man then stripped all of the girl's clothing and raped her.

Nancy Lewis' mother lives in an apartment beside the stairway where police say the rape occurred.

"It concerns me," Lewis said. "My mother's elderly. I don't let her take the garbage out now."

Neighbors say they believe the man lives in the neighborhood, which is even more reason to talk to their children.

"The only thing you can do is to teach them to take off running or get an adult," Chapman said.

Police said the victim went to her youth pastor for help, and he took her to the Cabell County Sheriff's field office to file the report. She then went to an area hospital for an examination.

Anyone with information that can help police find the suspect is asked to call 304-743-1594.

It happened in the Pea Ridge area of Cabell County. Police say the girl was threatened and then raped in the stairway of an apartment building.

Police say the girl had been walking between buildings to meet a friend at the bus stop. When she got to East Drive, a man asked her for directions. The report states he pulled the girl into the stairway, threatened to kill her and then raped her.

The police report says the teen went to her youth pastor for help.

The suspect is described as a man in his twenties with blonde hair. He had on khaki shorts and a ball hat. He was last seen riding a bike.

i am going to agree with pea ridge parent, i have heard countless kids bragging about it and i hope that something is done about this soon, it has been way too long without an arrest and this girl is close to my family and has this horid memory in her head forever

I keep checking back at this story to see if there are any updates. Almost a month later and this man is still free. I guess this case will be another unsolved crime in Cabell County. As a woman and the mother of an 11 year old daughter, I won't feel safe again in my neighborhood until this man is caught.

Do they have any suspects yet? I have heard rumors that they may have arrested someone for questioning. I hope so, so that they can get this man off the streets before he does it again.

for any one with doubts. my daughter has no problem with a lie detector if it stops this guy from hurting anyone else . she is a very strong girl and will do ANYTHING required to save another young person from this violence and a lifetime of hurt .....climb under what ever rock u came from or try to help find this person. and what makes u think nobody saw this guy? there are many people giving statements of things they saw that morn. all we ask is for people to understand the next kid done this way could b yours. thats why she is so strong. u can see her strength in her comments to u. thanks to all that help and give prayers it is really helping our family to b strong.

yes all girls who have sex voluntary end up naked and bloody on side of road doing nothing else but going to school... victim is strong and you are the reason these girls r afraid to come foreward. why is it suprising she has a description of an attacker. he was in her face. other people did see guy in neighborhod police have many sitings of this guy.there are other reports of the same thing the same way in same area . Their is a man who rides a bike in Barboursville all the time. And I know someone who saw a man riding a bike on east pea ridge and east drive yesterday.this man has been seen riding around the town real early in the Mornings. Not trying to jump to conclusions but the person who done this needs to be stopped now.

Kate, of course I'm not taking up for rapists and you know it. And to suggest I'm the reason women are raped just shows how mentally unstable you are. In my younger days I volunteered for EMS and a fire department. I've seen young girls of this age (15-18) make up all kinds of stories (appearently for attention). I'm not saying in this particular case, but something doesn't sit well with me on her story. As far as her exam in the hospital, any woman who has just had sex will have semen in her vigina (if no protection was used). It doesn't mean she was raped. She may have very well been a willing participant. But I find it strange that a young girl of this age, having been put through an ordeal such as rape, can remember so much information of the rapist. And remember, this is a heavily populated area. Why doesn't anyone else remember seeing a man on a bicycle? That time of morning, when many are on their way to work and no one remembers seeing a young man on a bicycle? This don't add up

First, this is to the commit that the police don't care. Thats funny because after this incident i have seen tons of Deputies in the area. As a matter fact they have been out the last two mornings at about 5:30am. I feel that they are doing all that they can with a broad description of a suspect as they have. ok, if the thug took her blackberry, could they not trace it?? they have gps systems in them so they should be able to get the number and track its location. granted the phone is probably gone now but had they tried this when they first gotten the information..

Dear teens mom. you do not have to try to explain to anyone why she didn't get away, see him better or tell them yes it really happened, anyone that matters believes you and knows it could happen to anyone. Your daughter did nothing wrong, she kept her wits and stayed alive, I was attacked and nearly strangled when I was 15, after something like that she or you should not have to defend yourself to anyone. You're family is in my prayers.

Hey disgusted....This case was a Sheriff's Dept case. It happened in the jurisdiction of the CCSD..NOT Barboursville PD. If you are mad be mad at the Sheriff. He was the one that waited almost a week to do the Press Conference. MAYBE that he was too busy campainging for Mayor to pay attention.

I have grown up in EPR since I was 6 months old. From the time I was about ten till I graduated high school 2 years ago I walked the streets no matter what time of day it was. I never expected anything like this to happen nor did it ever cross my mind. I could to imagine what I would be going through if it happened to me. My thoughts and prays go out to this girl. And I give you my full respect for speaking up and telling someone. That takes a lot of courage.

First, I am so sorry for this young lady and her family. I can't think of anything more devastating for a young girl. I happened acrossed a small blurb in the HD on Wednesday about what happened. With the Bville FallFest going on, these cops should have posted this information all over the city. How many young people were out wandering the streets during this event?!?! I am sickened by the lack of concern for the communities safety! For the police not to be on the airways warning about this monster is completely irresponsible! I will continue to pray for this young lady and her family and will keep my two young daughters close by at all times. It sad to think that people cannot rely on their community police force to keep them informed and safe!

www.wvstatepolice.com for this area. Mind you it will only list the sex offenders who are required to register for life, not the 10 year registrants. Also, keep in mind they are months behind in updating it, so not all the addresses are accurate. To the Victim and her family, I must say that I am saddened by what happened. I have a 15 year old daughter, 3 years ago she informed me that she was being sexually assaulted by her best friends step father. The one thing that helped her was to open up with what happened, but in her own time. She had to feel comfortable in speaking about it. Please visit the website wvagainstabuse.org her story is on it. to everyone who has or is reading this article, i am the girl that this happened to. first off i would like to thank everyone for their concern and prayers. as you can imagine this is not easy fr me or my family.we are doing everything we can to help the cops find him. just like all of you, i wish i had a better description of this man, but as my mother said it was dark outside and i was just trying to stay alive. i have been trying so hard to remember more details, but i honestly cant. there are a few things that i would like to get straigt about my story. FIRST OFF IT WAS ON TUESDAY, NOT THURSDAY. SECOND, THE REPORT SAYS THAT THIS TOOK PLACE IN THE STAIRWELL. THAT IS FALSE. THIS HAPPENED IN FRONT OF TH STAIRWELL. THIRD, I WAS NOT "CUTTING BETWEEN APARTMENT BUILDINGS". I WAS WALKIN IN THE STREET. i would like to thank all of my friends and family for amazing support, and the concern of the community.to whoever asked if this rally happened. OF COURSE IT HAPPENED. I would like to know how to view a list of local sex offenders. Every time I try to look it up, I just get a bunch of different site that you have to type in a persons name to see if they are on it! I just want to know who my neighbors are, ya know! I am moving from the Forrest Bluff Apts. now... because there is too much trouble that goes on around there and I don't want my kids raised around all that mess! I am soo sorry that this happened! It really brings back some bad memories! I hear about this type of thing everyday.... but East Drive is just a street away! I just keep thinking about everybody that I see riding bikes everyday! I can picture so many people! I think everybody in the neighborhood should be questioned! The area is too small for this man to hide! And everybody in that area knows EVERYBODY else's business! Somebody over there knows who this is and their not saying anything! The police need to q everybody, but I swear I have a feeling that they need to look around ...

Well here we go again with a rapist nut who doesnt consider the feelings of a young girl and what it will do to her mine in the future towards a man...So sad people who rape others are running loose. If found and convicted to be the TRUE guilty man that did it i think the rapist should be sterlized or castrated because too much of this is going on or maybe send all those sicko's to an island with other sicko's......!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like this guy has done this before or at least watched the girl and knew her habits . I know he couldnt have gone unoticed by the people in the area I think we should do what the british have done and install interlocking video networks and catalog people of a suspicious nature . This area is full of drifters who pass through or stay for a while ,Ive seen people traveling rt60 on foot 24/7 hope they catch him before he does it again .

the wv sex offenders website is a resource that is available to remind people that may have a false sence of security that these sick individuals are in every neiborhood and this is another way to help protect our familys and communitys we need to be aware of where they are because they sure know where to find their prey.. for example if you follow this advise and check the registry registry as i did you may find valuable information that can help you protect your children from that fatful false sence of security knowlege is power and we must take every step we can to protect the innocent i was unaware of the significant amount of pedifiles that live in the veterans home and i would not have otherwise been armed with knowlege had i not checkrd this valuable resource and you can be sure that my own false sence of security has been shattered as the old saying goes "the best defence is a strong offence" let them know that we know and we are watching

I'll vote for the death penalty in rape cases if given the chance. This child had someone she could go to for help. God bless the pastor who did the right thing. Sometimes people feel that they have nobody they can trust to tell about rape or other types of abuse. My family is praying for the healing of this child and the people who love her.

To Unknown, I am sorry for what happened to you, but your wrong saying we dont need to know this. Anytime there is something like this, other kids are at risk and not knowing, they could be playing, wlaking around this guy and he does it to them. Also how is anyone suppose to help, if they dont know anything. It is not like they published her name.

are there any convienience (sp?) stores in the area? check their surveilience (sp?) footage. there is always the possibility that the perp went into a store before or after this crime. are there any local businesses with outdoor cameras? this guy had to be caught on video sometime, somewhere before or after he did this even if it is several miles away. get the word out & start asking the surrounding businesses and or homes about any possible footage they have from that day. dont assume that the police have done this already (no one is perfect). even if you think what you saw or heard is useless, it's not. brainstorm people. let's catch this guy.

Everyone needs to keep an eye on everyone's kids.Watch out for the kids waiting for the bus,kids out playing, these lowlife creeps won't have it so easy to hurt our kids.

Is there a better description and or more information about the perp? Lets get this guy off the streets before he strikes again. What neighborhood did this happen in. Is there any dna that can be ran thru a database to look for a potential match? Any information will be of great worth. Is this crime getting any t.v. coverage. I just wish we could have some more information about this. I have three teenage daughters and we live in this area also. Don't understand why it took until Thursday to release the information when it happened on Tuesday. We will keep her and her family in our prayers. I pray that they will find this guy and get him off the street.

The offenders listed on the wv sex offender site are not the ones you need to be concerned with. Honestly I feel the registry does nothing but give the public a false sense of security. Watch over your children and teach them skills to get away from attackers if it should ever happen.

i hope that everyone who hears about this takes the time to check the wv sex offender site they're in every neiborhood and we should always be aware as a resident of barbousville myself i can say that we are not always as observent as we could be since we take our lovly neighborhoods for granted and please watch your babies closly this fallfest as someone else is always watching... waiting for the right chance

I am the Youth Pastor she went to and we are doing what we can to seek for the conviction of this criminal and if you know anything of who it might be please go to the authorities, because this can happen to anyone and we want to see justice for my teenager who was hurt in this situation. Please if you know who it is or have any information on who it might be please come forward and you will be a hero for your actions, but if you know something and dont come forward you are just as guilty as the person who did this!!!!! i am a sexual abuse victim and yes it is sad but i dont think the whole whorld should know about this. in my case no one knew besides the police and figures like that besides my family. right now is not a good time for this girl. i didnt want people telling me "thats sad" because it happenes every day to innocent people. but i do hope they catch him because myne didnt get sent to prison for two years.

I'm so sorry this happened to this young lady & hope that she will get the proper follow-up therapy & help she's going to need to help her cope with this horrendous crime. She needs to remember always that it was not HER fault like many of us victims tend to believe even years later. SHE didn't do anything wrong. This pervert did. I hope they catch him SOON & make him pay for what he did & keep him from doing it to anyone else To her family, PLEASE PLEASE get her into therapy. Take it from someone that knows what it's like to be abused. This will affect her yrs from now unless she gets therapy NOW. My thoughts & prayers are with her & her family. God bless her

Okay. why are the situations happing in out area.? The police an law enforcement needs to put more into there job then what has been done. They put victims in jail an let them out the next day or post a bail bond.? letting them out under them circimstances in unaceptable. The victims think they can DO ANYTHING IN THIS WORLD AN NOT GET ANYTHING FOR IT. Which is EXACTLY true. beacuase NO noone punishes theses people for their crimes. What is wrong with this world today?

this is a another story that we have heard about young girls getting raped, it is sad that these sickos do such things to innocent people. let us all pray for this young woman and pray for the predator also because there is something really wrong with these type of people that do such sick acts as these.

This is just crazy!!! I moved here from Chicago because of the crime and it is getting to be a miny Chicago here. There needs to be a neighborhood watch there as well as Huntington. I just cannot believe how drugs are exspecialy bad here!!!

That is so sad. Prayers are with this young girl. I hope they catch him or someone else catched him and make sure he never does that to anyone again. I am so paranoid when it comes to my kids nowadays, they arent allowed to go very many places, unless I am with them or another adult I trust, even at the bus stop, I sit there on my porch or steps and watch them.
