CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - As the general election approaches, a Christian evangelical group has issued an ultimatum to Gov. Joe Manchin: call a special session to pass a proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, or face the wrath of voters.

The Family Policy Council of West Virginia told the governor on Oct. 9 that he had until Wednesday to call the Legislature into session. The conservative group, formed in March, cites polling it says supports its position

But Manchin's office says West Virginia already has a law defining marriage as between one man and one woman. It says the 2001 statute was written to withstand legal challenge.

Supporters of a constitutional amendment fear a judge could void the statute. Amending the constitution would also require a statewide vote.

With two men Who would be head of the household? The one with the best head? No union could have direction without a leader. A double minded man is stable in none of his ways! What do they do, take turns with each other! This hole thing, is making me sick just to think about it!

Genesis 19:4 "But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: 5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. 6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, 7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. 8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.

some people enter into judgement through gods word, the word clearly states who will not enter into the kingdom of heaven unless they repent and be born again through jesus christ.

“And He answered and said to them, ‘Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning “made them male and female,” and said, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?” So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” - Matthew 19:4-6

As a "so called" Christian - may I just say one thing? The Bible says that gay and lesbians are an "Abomination" in the eyes of GOD. Read what the definition of this word is and you will see what God sees when you are laying with your own kind. God Bless Us All.

Posted by: Eric on Oct 15, 2008 at 04:11 PM: Eric, Yes the bible say's marriage is defined as one male and one female. Also the bible says thou shalt not judge. So how about the Christians remember that also. What people do in their life's is no ones business. Who are we to judge who can marry who? The truth is we are no body. God judge's people because he's allowed too. No one gives Christians the right to judge anyone. I was raised Catholic but I don't care what other people do you know why? It's none of my business. I'm really sick of Christians thinking that they are all holy when they aren't. And no I'm not gay I'm happily married for 8 yrs but I don't hate people that are gay its their lives they can do what they want and everyone else should but out. There isn't anyone telling the Christians what to do except now. Stay out of people's business if it has nothing to do with you. Simple!

Posted by: norman runyon on Oct 17, 2008 at 12:50 PM
Make no mistake it is not "so called" christians that don't want to see marriage laws changed. It is BIBLE BELIEVING GOD FEARING CHRISTIANS that don't want to see marriage laws changed. There a BIG differance in a sin God has forgiven you for and living in outright sin. But there is always hope that people will turn from their sins and accept god before it is too late. Live in a gay relationship is outright sin and should not be accepted nor tolerated. And we should not change laws to try to make it seem right. It is not right according to the BIBLE and nature. Being gay is a choice, plain and simple.

Posted by: Just Me on Oct 17, 2008 at 12:21 PM
I just ask one thing. If we are to allow marriage between two people of the same sex, then please hash out the divorce laws before they are allowed to marry. Every couple I know who has a "alternative" lifestyle has the same problems that other couples do. I would prefer not to hear details.

Leviticus 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. The only sin that is not forgivable is blasphemy.

Some teach that the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah was homosexual. This has no theological support. A careful look at scripture corrects such ignorance. Probably no story in the Bible has been used more to persecute homosexuals than the story of Sodom. Throughout the Old Testament, Sodom is held up as a lesson in wickedness that deserves utter destruction for reasons other than homosexual acts.. Not only are there no references to homosexual acts when Scripture refers to Sodom, there are no references to Sodom when the Scriptures refer to homosexuality. There are several biblical passages that some have misunderstood as condemning homosexual acts. Not one of these gives Sodom as an example of the result of homosexual behavior. Considering how often Sodom was used as an example of the result of wicked behavior, it's apparent that biblical times did not see homosexual acts as the important lesson of the destruction of Sodom.

I find it extremely interesting on how so-called "Christians" can always bash (judge) gays and lesbians. Very few will be able to stand before God on judgement day and say they've only had sex with their spouse. I can't say that. In my younger days, before I was married, I sinned, plain and simple. Sex with anyone other than your spouse is wrong and the punishment is the same. So, it will be interesting to hear the gay bashers explain how it was okay for them to sin sexually and that its not for the gays. Remember what Jesus said, "You will be judged on how you judge others."

I would suggest that people watch the history channel, especially history archeology. I believe the bible is a great book. But you have to know that it is not word for word of God. For instance, the original text of Genesis says God gave birth to heaven and earth denoting a female entity, changed because women were to be subserviant to men according to the law of the land. Also, when Jesus went before Pilate. The tradition of washing hands was of the Jewish faith. Romans didn't practice this. Therefore, the text had to be changed to make it sound that the jewish priest killed Jesus instead of the Roman Gov. Also, if Sodom and Gamorrah were distroyed, it was by a meteor shower, and the superstition of the time made it an act of God. In San Francisco there are straight people. You can't expect people to believe that no one in that city was straight. Faith is great. Blind faith is dangerous to oppressed people.

The bible was written by man. It's a nice story but that's all it is. The institution of marriage has already been ruined by strait people. As a gay man I want nothing to do with it. I simply want my partnership to be recognized legally si that my partner and I can make decisions together and not have to fill out tons of paper to back them up. Bottom line- basic human rights period. Comment for preacher: The almighty is a God of judgement. Then save the judgement for him and love your neighbor.

Wow! Once again, not surprised by the amount of ignorance on here. I'm gay; I was raised Christian. In fact, my father's a minister. I was taught all of my life that being gay was bad, gross, perverted, and a sin. Growing up, I always knew I was a little different than all the other guys, but didn't realize I was "gay" until high school. Now I'm in a great long term relationship with a great guy.. We mind our own business, we vote, we work, we pay taxes, we don't bother anyone. Not now, but one day I'm sure we will want to marry each other -- so we will have to leave the state. It's not even the certificate of marriage, it's the principle. Honestly, I'm not even sure that I care that much that I'm able to marry another guy... I don't need a piece of paper to say it when I can just make vows to someone. For all of those ppl who don't understand, I hope you have a little gay baby someday!! :) Dress him up in pink bows and stuff!!! He'll be sooo pretty!!

One real argument for gay marriage is the fact of those couples some even take in & raise ,adopt children who otherwise would maybe never get a chance in life. Anyone who takes in innocent children who are less fortunate than most I have a very hard time trying to degrade or concern myself with their sexual preferences .

I'm not suprised that through the teachings of evolution in our schools we have come to this type of thinking that I have seen on this board. Since there is no God there is no law and morality. Everything is relative. If you believe it and want it then it is right and how dare anyone say it is not. Today's society says that there is no right or wrong. If you want to marry two or three people, just do it. If your 50 and want to marry a 10 year old, do it. If your a man and want to marry another man, just do it if you want. There are certain boundaries folks and certain laws that must be upheld. The family is the heart of human society and this country was founded and is rooted upon God fearing bible believing men and women. And marriage has and always will be defined as one man and one woman.

Thank you Debbie, simple and to the point. I would like to respond to anonymous who wrote about marrying a dog or an 8 year old boy. that is the most rediculous comment i have ever heard, when you can't defend something with a resonable argument then apparently you have no basis on which to argue. a man marrying an 8 year old boy is wrong illegal and sick, and has nothing to do with this, and come on a man marrying a dog? yup just like right after women got the right to vote so did hamsters...right??? come on use your brain if you have one, and stop saying its a choice. If you think about it, if you do believe its a choice, then you must be bi.

You say, " that preachers worked a real job and ministered on the side. None of the preachers in the bible lived off of other people's money. Sure makes it easy for modern preachers, now doesn't it?" I take high offense to that. I am a pastor and I don't think that how I get my pay is any different than how you get your pay. If tax payers didn't pay their taxes then the company you work for wouldn't have money to pay you. And as far as a "real job" is concerned, I do believe that my job is a real job, how much more real can it get leading people to Jesus? People are just going to have to bite the bullet and face it, they have tried to prove God to be a fantasy and made up, but even the best scientists ever to have existed can't prove Him wrong. Jesus is coming back one day and He is taking everyone with Him up to Heaven, and I'm proud to say that I am going to be with Him! I would hate to be one of the ones left down here. It's not going to be a fun world to live in.

To: mr on Oct 15, 2008 at 04:22 PM I do understand that same sex should not be together BUT also to each their own. We are not the judges of what people should and should not do. That is whay judgement day will determine who is right & who is wrong. If that is the choice of the person directly involved then THEY are the ones who will answer on that final day not us so WHO ARE WE to "judge" and tell them not to unite in a commitment that joins there lives "permantely" if a preacher does the ceremony then he/she will also be standing there on that final day answering questions we are NOONE to "put into law" of what is to be. And to be honest I don't think the government has the right to make ANY type of religious decision for anyone Live and let live NO MATTER WHAT YOU LIFE CHOICES ARE. !! Remember WE will ALSO be standing there answering for our actions what are you all going to do when the question comes your way of you judging on this news story ???? THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK

Yes I am a Christian and I don't judge anyone because God's Word judges us all. God does love everyone and wants us to go to heaven but SIN will keep you out because no SIN will enter through the gates of heaven. Hence why I don't believe in organized religion. My son is gay and I couldn't be more proud of him. He was raised in a Christian household, went to church, was raised in the church. Do you really think he CHOSE to be gay? How asinine are some of you people? Why would anyone in their right mind CHOOSE to be the focus of so much hate? That's like saying choosing to be black, white, yellow pink or purple. Yes if they want to marry then let them marry, if they want to adopt a child then let them adopt. Actually they'd probably grow up better than a child with a man and woman together. People should open their minds instead of their mouths sometimes.

It's all about control! If legal, how could the government control the financial benefits of same sex marriages? If legal, you could marry your next door neighbor to get tax credits, save on insurance premiums, etc. Trust me, if the government can find a way that they could make many on the issue, then it would be passed but they aren't going to take any chances at losing money. By the way, I'm a happily married gal but believes to each his own!

Please, don't label christians as affraid of homosexual people. Label us as fearing God and keeping his commandments. You can live any lifestyle you wish. They NEVER acknowledge THAT. because THEY are the same nuts who vote for the war-mongering candidates who get babies daddies/mommies killed! Jesus also told his diciples to take care of the little children which are already BORN. These fanatics NEVER worry about the children already born who are abused, hungry, kidnapped/killed. Where are they to protest THAT? I'm not putting down all Christians I know there are a LOT of sincere/good Christians & others who like me love and serve God but are not fanatics like these people are. Those of us who have had enough of "organized religion" & their judgemental, crazy ways. I am not gay and I do not care who gets married. Why should you??? Mind your own business. If people are going to live, sleep, and have children together why not just let them get married? WHO CARES???

Posted by: KimmyLou on Oct 16, 2008 at 09:25 AM
People are forgeting that God made Adam and Eve. Not Bob and Steve! Marriage is sacred unity between a man and a woman. God loves everyone regardless of their sexuality or their sins.

Posted by: Ari on Oct 16, 2008 at 09:00 AM
All these people who divorce and remarry a million times should keep there mouth shut to if were on the subject of marriage. A marriage is between a MAN and WOMAN and it also is supposed ot be forever. No divorce, no cheating, ect. If you are on here yelling about gay marriage and your divorced your no different then them fruit loops

Posted by: Lori on Oct 16, 2008 at 08:53 AM
Marriage started out as part of religeon. It became a legal binding to protect women from men just divorcing their spouses by saying it 3 times. My opinion is that if it is a legal issue, then anyone should be allowed to enter into a civil union. If a church agrees to preform the ceremony, then so be it. We have to get to the premise of our constitution. All men are created equal.... In that premise, there should be no discrimination. God gives us free choice...Why can't the religeous sect see that. Jesus was against the establishment of the religeos sect because they strayed away from the basic premis of God..Love thy neghbor as thyself..Let God do the judging. We have enough to do to by being the best that we can be. How can I judge someone else when I have fallen short of the glory of God. I hope Gov. Manchin does not cave in to this kind of BLACKMAIL. This is BLACKMAIL. And it should be stated as so.

If being gay is not a choice then it's a sickness.Get help and stop this perverted and immoral behavior! It's Against the BIBLE.Marriage is and should be between a NAB abd a Woman!Being Gay is sick.If Tou are Gay go back in the closet and stay there. No one wants to see Tou holding hands in public! When the time comes You will be punished for Your immoral acts by GOD.The Gay lifestyle gas been shoved down everyones throat(no pun intended)it's on Tv and everywhere You go. And whats up with this Gay School in Illinois? If Your afraid of getting beat up then this should tell You something. This is proof that Gay couples should not be allowed to raise a child.Just spreading this disease.

(ironic post follows) It will solve the banking crisis! It will get us out of Iraq! It will give our students quality education! It will raise WV wages! It will send the stock market soaring again! It will take people off of the welfare rolls! Seriously, if you people have nothing better to lobby for than to deny people something everyone else can do, you really need to take a look at your priorities.

Posted by: Daniel on Oct 16, 2008 at 08:03 AM
In my opinion, this group of evangelicals need to go back to their hole in the mountains. There is already a ban on gay-marriage in the state, of which I am opposed. Secondly, who do they think they are telling other people how they can live their life. It is really none of their business who marries who. Obviously the straight community has been such a model of marriage they want to keep it that way. What was the latest divorce rate in America....over 50% if I recall correctly. Governor Manchin should not be affected by hollow threats made by same back-woods group of churches that refuse to think outside of their own bias.

Posted by: Joker on Oct 16, 2008 at 07:09 AM
You christians make me sick. I am happily married to a woman but I have several friends who are gay and you don't have any rigth to ban anything. Its kills me how you people throw around god to get what you want. I think all the gays need to show up on your door step and protest against your relegious practices. If they do, I will be standing there next to my wife and my friends. LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE! Their not bothering you, don't bother them.

First of all Barack Obama opposes gay marriage, but does support civil-unions and equal rights. Second off groups like this are the ones that make me question religion and the bible. These are the same people that believe God is the creator of all things, so wouldn't that mean that God creates homosexual people everyday. What does a gay couple down the street do to hurt you if they share a health plan? What does it do to hurt you if they file a joint tax return? If you believe it is wrong then you believe it is wrong, but why force your views on everyone. If Amber is right and God has time for everyone I'm pretty sure he would have time for gays just as much as he would have time for you.

Why do you care what people do?! It's not your business whether they "defy God" or not! It's NOT your place to judge them, that job belongs to God alone!

Posted by: jack thomas on Oct 16, 2008 at 06:16 AM
This is for "L". You stated "Why are Christians so afraid of what others choose to do with their lives" Prob. the same reason you refuse like many people on here to use your real name. You are scared of someone knowing what you are or are really like. And the mixed fibers content you have taken way out of text. If you people would let your voice heard somewhere instead of the internet and postion anomyously you might be taken seriously. The Christian group is the only one taking a stand for something they belive in and letting the state govering body know about it. So you all have not room to talk about anything as long as you post anonymously on here.

Posted by: alice on Oct 16, 2008 at 04:40 AM
Supposed Christians such as this group are such hypocrites and don't follow the teachings of God. Didn't He teach tolerance and to not judge others, or do you just overlook that and spew whatever nonsense helps your agenda? He is the FINAL judge, you are simply to plant the seed of His word, not shove your beliefs down others' throats. Gays DO NOT effect your way of life. And our government is not supposed to be influenced by any religion. You don't even take the time to try to win over others to your way of life, you just alienate them. People like these are what gives the whole religion a bad name.

Lets not call them gays.Gay makes them sound happy.Have you ever met a happy gay person.Everyone of them are always complaining about how unhappy they are.And by the way,God does not make gay people.God loves everyone, even the gays.God help us all in this crazy twisted world we live in.

Posted by: bob on Oct 16, 2008 at 03:53 AM
First off marriage is not a right but it is a RITE. A religious rite that is between a man and a women. So many people say why are we forcing a “religious view on them”. Its not. Why are you coming into the church and forcing a gay marriage on the churches views and their rite??? if it’s a civil union not much can be said. But when you try to make the church’s believe that they have to be excepted then you are in the wrong. Sometime in the future people will start doing things like cannibalism and then they will come up with all these logical reasons for it to just like they do this. What a world.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 16, 2008 at 03:45 AM
good heavens. with all the crime, high cost of living, bad economy, poor health insurance, is there not other things to worry about? Should christians not be judgemental? I thought God did that.

A Colorado amendment to their state Constitution was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court for similar reasons as the one proposed by the Evangelicals. It used to be illegal for blacks to marry whites as well. Many West Virginians would probably support that law coming back. Luckily, it was struck down in Loving v. Virginia. The U.S. Supreme Court stated that marriage was a fundamental right of all Americans.

Why are Christians so afraid of what others choose to do with their lives? The bible also says not to wear mixed fibers - how many of you wear polyester blends? It also says that there's no big or little sin, so by that logic wearing polyester is as bad as murder or being gay. I'm so very, very glad I don't subscribe to bigotry and hate. Live and let love, people.

What a crock! The FPC wants to waste taxpayer money to call an unnecessary session, not to mention wasting the time of all the legislators! Let the government focus on importans issues, such as energy and the economy. Besides, marriage is an institution of the church, not the state. As far as the state (government) is concerned, we should just fight to ensure equal rights for everyone, gay or straight. I think the constitution should be all about the rights of all, not about decreasing the rights of some.

Kevin, if this was put to state wide vote the totals would just about match the amount of votes that Obama will get in WV. These people here are of unsound minds and most of the comments here proves it. God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve. He clearly made a man and women for each other. Have you ever heard of two men or two women having a bung ho baby? I guess next you will say it's ok for them to adopt one too after they're married?

First of all, marriage is not mentioned in the bible. It says "what God has joined together, let not man put asunder." Want to guess how many divorced people are attending these churches?! It seems their Bible works one way--whichever best suits their needs. Gluttony--or lack of self control--is mentioned in the Bible. Want to guess how many overweight people there are in these churches, including the preachers? Do away with marriage altogether. Make everyone work under a civil union. The legal entity should be for everyone. Then, if the churches want to sling holy water and call it marriage, fine. We have crackers and wine...they call it Communion. As Jesus said, let him who is without sin, cast the first stone. You will also find in the bible, that preachers worked a real job and ministered on the side. None of the preachers in the bible lived off of other people's money. Sure makes it easy for modern preachers, now doesn't it?

Gay people pay taxes just like every other person. Why should they be banned from marrying the person they love? Their money is good enough to take, but they can't get a freakin marriage license? are you kidding me? I don't care what anybody or what anything says, being gay is NOT a choice. How can you choose that? It makes zero sense. These evangelical morons need to mind their own business and let people love who they want to love and be happy.

As far as I'm concerned, government shouldn't define marriage at all. Redefine the rights that married people have to something else so that it ambigiously covers both straight and gay couples, and let the religious community determine what constitutes "marriage" anyway. We don't need the arguments and the fighting in this world anymore.

Same sex marriage is not allowed in West Virginia, so what is the point of this. Secondly a constitution is something that grants people rights not take them away, there is nothing in the state constitution that states that one group of people can not do the same as another group. And lastly It is going to happen, maybe not today or next year but same sex couples will one day be allowed to marry, just like women can vote and blacks can own property, its going to happen so why don't we just let it happen, get over it and move on with our lives.

Posted by: Tina on Oct 15, 2008 at 05:29 PM
Last time I checked God created Adam, and Eve not same sex couples like pete Tim or Sue Kim. The high court in california slapped the voters in the face who elected to ban same sex wedding from happening. why is it that every time on the news some where in california thiers always a fire burning out of control??? Bible Gensis Chp 19:24 Then the lord rained upon Sodom and upon gomorrah brimstone, and fire from the Lord out of heaven.???

I must say, I think it is extremely hypocritical of Christian groups to JUDGE others CONSTANTLY. It sure does make me want to go to church. <--hint of sarcasm How would Christians feel if homosexuals, people who practice other religions, [insert other people persecuted by "Christians"], etc. picketed and yelled outside of their churches or constantly frowned on everything Christians do or try to enact? Hurt and dismayed I would expect. In my opinion: Let people love who they want to love and also be able to take care of that other person as their spouse. Civil union/gay marriage cannot hurt anyone in any way.

The family is the very foundation of our country and is one thing that must remain sacred. Haters of the bible must agree that marriage is defined as one male and one female. No polygamy, no bestiality, and no homosexuality. The laws of nature are against anything besides male and female folks, this isn't a hard thing to grasp.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 15, 2008 at 04:09 PM

The Family Policy Council of WV needs to get over themselves and their threats. This group is the most arogant popus bunch of people in WV. While I am not gay, I do love my brothers and my sisters. What one choices as his/her life companion is none of these peoples business. They should check out there own houses before the seek to destroy others.

The bible says "Thou shall not judge" so they will havve to answer to this someday. And to shut everyone up before ti starts... I am not gay and do not agree with it myself but to each their own. I am not either a "gay basher" but I do understand that every person has a right to their own options and opinions. Live and Let Live !!

Posted by: willowsaige on Oct 15, 2008 at 02:53 PM
This is just another religious group trying to force their beliefs on everyone else. You can't help whom you fall in-love with. If two people of the same sex are in love with each other let them get married, let them have the same rights as a heterosexual married couple. We all are created equal, we are human beings not robots that need to be programmed or told how to believe. As far as the Family Policy Council of West Virginia giving Governor Manchin an ultimatum of banning same sex marriage or “face the wrath of the voters” What does your God think of you making threats to our Governor, what gives you the right to chose who should and shouldn’t get married? Who gives you the right to tell us how to believe or think? Who gives you the right to make threats or give ultimatums? Who do you think you are?
