CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Mid-Ohio Valley residents with high levels of a chemical used to produce Teflon also have higher cholesterol levels.

The finding is part of a filing involving a massive health screening of residents living near DuPont's Washington Works Plant in Wood County.

A science panel that's reviewing medical histories and blood samples from about 69,000 residents says nothing conclusive can be drawn so far involving the chemical known as C8.

Residents who work or live closest to the plant had about six times more of the chemical in their blood.

But, the panel said additional research would be needed to determine if there is a link between diabetes and cholesterol levels.

DuPont spokesman Dan Turner said today the company supports the panel's work.

DuPont has maintained that C8 does not harm human health.

The chemical, which has been used since World War II, is used to produce the nonstick substance Teflon and a variety of other products, from flooring to food packaging.

Hey I have been working at the Dupont Plant in Parkersburg for the last two years. Since the start of the C8 issue they have been taking every step they can to insure that the community and their employess are safe. You people don't understand that if you force dupont out of the area, the local economy will suffer. Do your research before you post information that you know nothing about.

I am one that has high levels of C-8 in my blood and I have extremely high cholesterol levels. We need to get to the bottom of this fast. Cholesterol medication is expensive and could lead to further health issues. I hope WSAZ continues to persue this story.

A company spokesman said they support the panels work . Thats a good faith statement , I believe they mean to do the rite thing . Its a good sign when a company stands ready to admit they have a problem .

My question is, how valid are non-fasting cholesterol levels, which is what the Science Panel measured?

Of course, DuPont will say there is nothing harmful coming from their plant. Just ask any person living in Greenup or near the DuPont plant in Wurtland , Ky. also ask how many persons especially the first responders Fire Dept., Police Dept., and Medics how many have died after working DuPonts spills (Sulfuric Acid) from 1995 and then anoher spill 2004, God only knows how other spills that were hidden by DuPont, and how many has problems serious problems , yet they keep defending their selves saying everything but, caused the problems. DuPont are jerks and they use defective material, and junk for repairs and everything illegal they can to get by, and they care not about the citizens that are exposed to their poisoned emissions. I know I was in the last spill and I have many Medical problems from the breathing of this Sulfuric acid and am under a Drs. Care and have been since the spill in 2004. DuPont needs to be accountable for their spills and messes and should pay.

DuPont has always said their products are not harmful, however when my dad worked for the plant in Louisville, OSHA discovered the rate of hypertension below the age of 55 was ten times the national average of workers in other plants in that age group. It killed my dad at 54.
