CLAY COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- School officials in Clay County are trying to get to the bottom of a stinky smell.

The foul smell is at the new Big Otter Elementary School.

The superintendent says it's been an on-going problem for almost eight months and contractors have run several tests to locate the stench, but so far they've had no luck.

The 8 million dollar school opened to students last school year.

The wet traps on drains in the floors may be dry causing sewer gas to come back up.

Could be a dead body buried there, or an animal died inside the walls or any number of things. Years ago we kept noticing a terrible smell on the woods side of our house, we later found out there was a recessed drain pipe there, that apparently small animals were falling into. We discovered this by accident when I heard a kitten crying loudly and we found it headfirst stuck in the pipe. A couple weeks later I found a baby possum stuck in it. The kitten and possum were saved. We've since covered it.

I think that it is really crazy putting that kind of money in a school and it has had numerous problems. My daughter goes to Big Otter and I can smell it everyday when I drop her off for school, it really stinks....

more than likely it is the sewage. have you every been to the school? the kids don't much of a play ground, most of the time they play on the parking lot. they build a huge building with no room for surroundings there is not even much room for the leach bed (sewage drain system). not to metion that when it rains hard the field at the drive will flood!

Does the odor smell like "dirty socks" If so,it's the Heating/Cooling units.
