WAYNE, W.Va. (WSAZ ) – A Wayne County grand jury has indicted the two soldiers accused of killing a Huntington minister.

19-year-old Stephen Wilson of Cincinnati and 22-year-old Daniel Smith of Newport News, Va. are charged with the death of Rev. Mark McCalla.

McCalla was found shot to death at a shooting range at the Beech Fork Lake Wildlife Management Area back in June.

Wilson and Smith were arrested at a Columbus, Ohio bus stop several days after the murder.

Both men had been stationed at Fort Drum in New York, but the Army had listed them as deserters since May.

Wilson and Smith were arraigned on murder and robbery charges Friday afternoon.

Circuit Court Judge Darrell Pratt entered not-guilty pleas for both men since their lawyers were not present at the arraignment.

A preliminary trial date is set for January 12.

To spyker: I must say I whole heartedly agree with you, I've known Stephen for numerous years myself and he has graced my doorstep countless times and he even calls me mom #2, I love him like he is my own son, I have spent many hours with his fiance and other friends talking about him. He is a good kid that just made a horrible choice, I'm afraid & I believe he was very much influenced with this choice and if memory serves me correctly I do believe Stephen has not said anything it's all been Smith,I'm sure that he was there but thats it nothing more. I need to see more proof. I too would have jumped in my car to see him and would send letters but until the trial I am afraid of saying somthing that may hurt his case n that's the last thing I want for him. I so want him back in my home again asking whats in the frig mom I'm hungry, and I could certainly use one of those bear hugs. my heart is in tears and I think of him often. Stephen Mom #2 loves you!!

To Dave: Steve is only allowed to recieve letters.no phone calls or visitors besides family.otherwise i would have hopped on the first thing smokin' to see him.no body here really cares about him enough anymore to wonder why or even keep up with whats going on with him besides his family.i know by me saying that he wanted a war seems like he was violent person but truth be told im more violent than he is or so i thought.he was a calm and collected guy like i am.when i said he wanted a war,all he wanted to do was fight for his country.he knew more about weapons than anybody i knew.might sound bad but its not a crime to have knowledge.he was a great person who grew up with great parents,3 sisters, and a younger brother.he was absolutely no trouble maker growing up.his parents would not have stood idly by allowing it.everyone can be pursuaded.iv only talked to a couple of teachers sense then and theyre just as shocked as we are.besides his family id say this hit his fiance the hardest.

Has anyone spoken with Stephen Wilson since he was apprehended? Has he offered ANY explanation of his actions to his parents, family or friends? Does his "wanting a war" intimate that he had a penchant for violence or a certain moral emptiness? A lack of conscience? What is the background on this kid? Had he been a trouble maker all his life? What are his former classmates and teachers saying about Stephen? Was he a slow witted person easily manipulated by others? I still cannot fathom how someone as purely decent and humane as Pastor Mark was murdered. What could have caused such calculated cruelness? The entire Huntington community has a lost a great man of incredible compassion, a person with a keen sense of social responsibility and exceptional intellect. Stephen Wilson has cut a wide path of destruction with his crime.
