RICHWOOD, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A battle is brewing in Nicholas County, W.Va., where the Richwood City Council wants the mayor to resign -- claiming he allowed workers to drink on the job and misuse city money.

Mayor John McClung, however, said he didn't break any rules and has no plans to step down. McClung came to office in May, promising change to local government, but some say he's become part of the problem.

Now the City Council wants McClung out of office, sending him a letter asking him to resign.

"I was rather disappointed in the direction that some of the city councilmen chose to go in," McClung said.

According the letter, the City Council claims the mayor mismanaged city funds, took on debt without council approval, refused to be drug tested and allowed workers to drink on the job.

But McClung said he didn't break the law and he plans to stay on the job.

"I can clearly state this administration has done nothing wrong or unethical or illegal," he said. "I consider all the charges to be unfounded and I have no plans to step down from this office."

City Council is threatening to head to court and follow the path of the Dunbar City Council to get McClung removed from office.

The charges against the mayor have been turned over to the Nicholas County prosecutor.

As a small business owner in Richwood I come in contact with alot of people every week. The majority of the people i talk to are in support of our major John McClung. He may not be perfect but as far as I know he never claimed to be. Most people are happy with what he has done so far. The next time please interview some of his supporters.

Didn't they just do this to the last mayor? Is the problem the mayor or the people?
