MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - The West Virginia Board of Education is taking over schools in Preston County, saying the situation for students is getting worse instead of better.
The state audited the district twice, in January and February.
On Tuesday, the auditors told the board there are serious financial and personnel problems, as well as leadership, facility and curriculum issues.
Gus Penix was named as interim superintendent for 90 days. Then Mason County Superintendent Larry Parsons.
The current schools chief, John Lofink, retired Tuesday.
State Superintendent Steve Paine says while there may be pockets of excellence, the irregularities leave the state no choice but to intervene.
The state has intervened in several other counties in recent years, including Fayette, Mingo and McDowell counties.
