HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The safety of our local airports is once again in the headlines after another incident at Yeager Airport in Charleston on Monday.

While the incident was only an aborted takeoff, it has many people wondering about safety issues and how our local airports deal with those issues.

WSAZ.com's Brad Myers takes a look at how Tri-State Airport near Huntington is helping Yeager Airport cope with all of this.

A safety system known as EMAS is credited for saving lives after a US Airways jet aborted a takeoff at Yeager Airport last month. EMAS is a specially engineered surface that helps stop a runaway aircraft.

Tri-State Airport, though, has no EMAS system because it has 1,000 feet of safety overrun area.

Tri-State Airport Director Jerry Brienza says while Yeager Airport has made headlines recently, passengers should know these type of incidents can happen anywhere.

"This is nothing uncommon to airports," he says. "Aircraft have emergencies. It has nothing to do with the airport. It's just they had a little bit of bad streak in the past few weeks."

Airport officials say with the safety precautions in place both at Yeager and Tri-State airports, the public should feel at ease.

Tri-State Airport was able to add its extra 1,000 feet of safety area after a federal grant three years ago. The final part of construction on that area should be completed later this month.

Charleston has fought any chance that the Huntington Charleston corridor will ever have a decent airport. Any no matter what they say it will never be much more than it is now. The location just has too many limitations.
