Huntington Utilizes Volunteer Police Officers

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A doctor, a pastor, and an architect walk into a room. It might sound like the beginning of a joke, but the punchline is more police officers on the streets of Huntington.
It's an expansion of the Huntington Police Department that's actually been going on for years. Mayor Kim Wolfe is making good on a campaign promise -- recruiting a variety of folks in the community to become reserve police officers.
Most little kids dream of being a police officer.
"I think in your youth, 5 to 6 years old, playing cops and robbers is just part of your existence," Huntington City Councilman Nate Randolf said.
Randolf is living his childhood dream. Now, you can call him Officer Randolf. He's part of the police reserve program.
Reserve officers won't carry guns and cannot make arrests. Police Chief Skip Holbrook says their presence is what's needed.
"We may have large crime scenes or fire scenes that require traffic control," Holbrook said.
"There is some training involved, they do wear uniforms, they drive police cars," Mayor Kim Wolfe said. "Iit allows the police officers to do more police activities."
Wolfe, a certified cop, says programs like this are just in his blood. He says though you might not see him in the reserves, the thought of a badge isn't that far from his mind.
"Actually you might see me on a horse," he said. "We're planning on beefing up our mounted unit again."
The selection process for members is pretty selective, Wolfe says.
If you'd like to be considered, you can submit an application to either the mayor's office or the Police Department. Then you will be screened.

This is a crock if I have ever seen one......A Dr, Pastor what are you thinking! Instead of paying for uniforms and training pay the ones you have!!!!!
Ok Old Professional, I'll tell you what I've done. US Army, and 20 plus years of Real Police work in Seattle, WA. I love the idea of more protection for you guys, but check this out. There you are standing on the parade route all alone in you nice uniform and shiney badge that says POLICE. A car pulls up to you and the driver says the guy behind me was fighting with his girlfriend, and I think he may have killed her. You look at the suspect, he looks at you, he gets out of the car and knowing he is a convicted felon and is on his way back to jail, he puts the car in park, leaves his dying girlfriend starts walking toward you, pulls out his gun, and then you respond by _______ (Fill in the blank please) I'll give you a hint, GET SHOT AND DIE, because you have no way of protecting yourself. Don't worry though, your widow will get a nice flag and some roses, and we'll put your name on a wall or a overpass somewhere. THINK ELECTED OFFICIALS. I am available for consulting if needed.
Sign me up can i play tackleberry off of police academy
