UPDATE: 8/9/07
More West Virginia State Troopers have resigned in two of the three years Colonel Dave Lemmon has served as superintendent than in any other single year in the last decade, statistics show. Click here for the complete story.

UPDATE: 8/3/07
A trooper who shot and killed himself more than two weeks ago will not be forgotten. A special team of four people is now looking into why Corporal Marlo Gonzales committed suicide.

Since his death: two former troopers have spoken out and more than 800 comments have been posted here on WSAZ.com -- accusing leaders at the West Virginia State Police of pushing Gonzales too far.

Governor Joe Manchin requested that Jim Spears, Secretary of Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, create this team. It's going to be studying trooper suicides, and is looking to see what other similar states are doing.

Team members:
- Carl Berlin, Retired West Virginia State Police Lieutenant
- Dr. John Linton, Professor & vice chair of the WVU School of Medicine (Charleston), and chiar of the governor's behavior health commission.
- John Bianconi, Commissioner of the bureau for behavior health (under DHHR)
- Joe Thornton - Deputy Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety.

So far, we're told some complaints have come in to the governor's office and the office of military affairs and public safety, but most remain anonymous.

WSAZ will continue to follow this story.

UPDATE: 8/1/07:
The suicide death of Corporal Marlo Gonzales has prompted hundreds of comments here on WSAZ.com, and has pushed two former troopers to speak out.

On Wednesday, former West Virginia State Trooper Steven Smith talked with NewsChannel 3's Jennifer Cottrill. He says he was abused by the agency -- and accuses the administration of creating the kind of stress that could have led to Gonzales' suicide.

"We're all supposed to be on the same team, but they treat you like you just committed the worst crime," said Smith. It's supposed to be a brotherhood and it's not."

WSAZ spoke with Colonel Dave Lemmon over the phone Wednesday. He says he doesn't want to comment on what he calls anonymous allegations.

WEB EXTRA: scroll down to the video player to watch the unedited interview with Smith.

UPDATE: 7/26/07
We have new information about the allegations posted on our webchannel about the West Virginia State Police.

More than 500 comments have been submitted to WSAZ.com after the suicide death of Corporal Marlo Gonzales. Many of the comments blame the administration at the state police for not doing enough to help Gonzales.

We talked with the office that oversees the state police Thursday -- and a spokesperson tells us the office has received some of the same complaints, but all have been anonymous. We're told someone needs to go on the record in order for action to be taken.

Colonel Lemmon, who is the target of many of the accusations, did not want to do an interview with us when we contacted him earlier this week.

UPDATE: 7/25/07
Governor Manchin is calling for those who want change to come forward. That's what he told WSAZ in an interview Wednesday morning when we asked him about the allegations posted on this story.

"I know you hear rumors and blaming," said Manchin. "I have not seen any evidence, whatsoever; but, we're going to work through it to make the system better."

Governor Manchin says not one person has called his office to complain.

"No one should ever be anonymous. If you have a constructive complaint, a way to make things better, please come forward. People should not have to work or live in fear. It's not how this government is run, not how this administration operates, and I won't tolerate it in any branches of our administration," said Manchin.

Former trooper Jason Gilley spoke to WSAZ regarding the way he was treated when he was working for the West Virginia State Police.

Gilley says the current administration at the WVSP forced him to resign in January. He said he was even threatened physically by one of his supervisors.

From the Associated Press:
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Governor Manchin has asked a cabinet secretary and the State Police to study the issue of suicide among police officers in the wake of a trooper's death last week.

The governor wants Military Affairs and Public Safety Secretary Jim Spears to see if other states have grappled with the problem. Manchin also wants to know whether there are any procedures that can be used to reduce the risk of another suicide.

Two state troopers have committed suicide in West Virginia since 1999. Some studies suggest that the suicide rate among police officers is three times higher than that of the general population.

Last week, 39-year-old Corporal Marlo Gonzales was found dead in his cruiser from a bullet fired from his service weapon.

On July Second, 1999, State Police Senior Trooper Rodney Robinson shot and killed his former girlfriend before turning his gun on himself.

After Gonzales' death, State Police Colonel David Lemmon said police were at a loss to explain why the trooper might have taken his own life.

UPDATE: 7/24/07
As a result of the comments and allegations posted about this story and the West Virginia State Police, WSAZ contacted the West Virginia State Police and Governor Joe Manchin's office.

Colonel Lemmon says his thoughts are with the family of Corporal Gonzales at this point, but he did not wish to speak on camera regarding the comments posted on WSAZ.com.

A spokesperson for Governor Joe Manchin, Lara Ramsburg, says Governor Manchin asked Secretary Jim Spears, head of military affairs and public safety, to look into the matter -- and to look into what's happening on a national level with state police, troopers, and law enforcement in general.

Stay with WSAZ.com as we hear more from the investigation.

ORIGINAL STORY
West Virginia State Police are investigating a deadly shooting involving one of their own.

Police say Corporal Marlo Gonzales shot and killed himself Wednesday night near his home on Sycamore Road in Hurricane. His father-in-law found his body inside his police cruiser, dressed in uniform.

State Police say he shot himself with his service revolver.

The investigation is in the preliminary stages, but troopers did say he shot himself with his service revolver.

Gonzales was a 13-year veteran of the department. He was stationed at the Clay County Detachment, but was recently assigned to the detachment in South Charleston.

Colonel D.L. Lemmon says he was a friendly guy and this has taken people who work with him by surprise.

Troopers say Gonzales was on duty at the time of the shooting. Corporal Gonzales has a wife and three children. He was 39 years old.

Stay with WSAZ.com for the latest information.

The self-imposed code of silence by troopers is a factor. They see so much abuse of the system by criminals, government officials and fellow troopers and are not allowed to speak out about it. It's frowned on by troopers to "snitch" on one of their own. When this attitude is gone we should see improvements.

We wanted to say, if anyone is still reading this, thank you for everything you do (all of the men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line for us everyday and get very little appreciation.) Your jobs are hard, and people sometimes act as if having police protection is something that will always be there...but it is, because of people like you. In spite of all the criticism, there are many more people out here who do appreciate you. We can go to sleep at night because we know you are out there, and no matter what the few have to say about "bad cops etc." the many say God bless you. Please, when you go out to do the job people depend on, remember this, you are not alone, and it is our hope and prayer, that you return home safe, and that you understand, people care about you. You do a fantastic job and we want you to know, we appreciate it.

Well, some time has gone by, and I have not heard anything about the investigation into the tragic death of Trooper Gonzalez. Has anyone else? I am doing a research project at Marshall, and my topic is the psychological effects of occupational stress on law enforcement. I would be very interested in hearing some of the problems that are causing our state police to have to work under conditions most people would find difficult if not impossible. There are so many rules and so many people you have to be responsible to, it just doesn't seem fair...and when they ask for a little understanding, it seems that everyone thinks being a police officer means you somehow become less than human. I am finding in my research that there is far more occupational stress than stress that is felt through critical incidents. Is that true, and what would it take to make the job easier, not only for the officers, but also for the administration, I am sincerely interested in learning more.

Any word from the result of the nvestigation in the reason for suicide of Marlo Gonzales?. Do the Troopers Asspciation need to initiate an independent investigation with a real investigator with non vias approach?. Does any one realy believe the crap they said that it was marital woes that caused marlo to comit suicide?. Why did not he do it while off duty if it was marital woes?. why is the siucide note-video not being discused by the SP to back up their theory!??. What kind of threat was made to te SP Investigator in order to clear the real responsible party (s) in this rail road detail?.. STILL LOTS OF QUESTION PEOPLE... DO NOT GO SLEEP... ONE OF OUR OWN IS IN THE GROUND... KEEP THE BLOGS... KEEP SCREAMING OUT TE OUTRAGE IN OUR RANKS OR BE SILENT FOREVER...

Susan ---ill bet you really fired him up! RIGHT!! you was probably thinking youd like to say something but fear and common sense kicked in and you knew you didnt want to go to jail. And its like JC said until you step up to the plate and get a job as a police officer then you probably shouldnt say anything. I seriously doubt you are going to confront a man who is drunk and shooting a gun. Or picking a dead baby out of a vehicle dont tell these guys anything about stress.....oh and learn how to spell!!

Posted by: JC on Aug 28, 2007 at 10:51 PM
Continuation to Susan: You said they are not better than you right. Until the bullets fly and you hit the floor, run or scream. Others might find enough courage to call 9-11 but only one kind will runn to confront the person wit the gun, and it is not you. I meant what I say. Give them a brake. I would encourage you to travell to other states and attempt to get by with that attitude or Talk like that to a Deputy in Logan Co, Mingo or Welch. I am sure you will not get the same responce you got from Tpr Barney. Dont get me wrong. You might be nice lady with a good life, but venting that frustration in this blog was out of line. Gonzales did handled stress very well. He was not violent or arrogant. He died in uniform in a last attempt to send a message. It was a combination of lots of thing. Not Family problems. He did not shoot himself in civilan clothes with his personal gun in his house. He died in Uniform and on duty. They would not give him the time to do this on his own time.

Posted by: JC on Aug 28, 2007 at 10:39 PM
To Susan: Sorry about your experience. Stress did not have anything with you crash right, what in the .... does Barney and your attitude have to do with Gonzale's dead. It seems like you are one of those people that if you do not get your way you slap aery police officer in the face, regardless if they had anything to do to your case or not. There are good cops and bad cops. Marlo Gonzales was a good Trooper (Not a violent or arrogant person as you described the other trooper). Your comments are way out of line. Using your anger to slap a family in the face after a tragic lost. No one is perfect but you get what you pay for. The WV Sp is still a great organization and I am sure in your case you have have big expectations out a Big $1.00 buck of you Tax that go to Law enforcement in one month. We promiss not spend it all in one place. Did you bother in asking if that Trooper had not just picked up a dead baby in a fire, or a battered wife in a hospital crying infront of her todler?

Anyone hear from Manchin or Spears yet? I know they've gotten lots of correspondence--signed with addresses and phone numbers.

Ok this news story is to tell our Governor we have issues in Charleston and us tax payers and voters know this. For Susan and everyone else to carry on about stupid stories about certain cops, their is "REALLY" no need for it. The Barney cops "USED TO BE A CHIEF IN RAINELLE". The ones here now how to tell who is at fault or not especially at walmart! I can do a citizens arrest on alot of morons I see on the roads. But I don't I laugh it off unless their drinking. What everyone needs to remember is if you think the job is so darn easy you go through the training "IF" you can get in, and lets see how you would treat people when they got an attitude with you for doing your job. Do you think their going to kiss butt when your in the wrong? W.W.J.D. Everyone seems to NEVER remember this phrase. What would Jesus do? Set the example for the immaturity in our society! GOD Bless to the men & woman who risk their lives at work.

Posted by: Susan on Aug 27, 2007 at 06:41 AM
if these officers cant handle the stress they need to find a new job, before they get someone hurt.the one I encountered over the weekend needs an attitude adjustment. you dont speak to people the he TRIED to speak to me, I simply put in back in his tree where he belongs! I told him flat out! DONT talk to me like that, and thats what I meant, he is no beter than I am. A lady had hit us in the walmart parking lot and trooper "BARNEY" showed up like he was there to save the day.he didnt do anything except make himself look stupid. I am not IMpressed at all with the Wva State Police, exspecially that officer.

When I heard of Marlo's passing from this present world, it struck me in the heart. I knew that I was feeling his mother's pain. Although we have lived with limited contact for several years, time had not lessened the bond between us, in spirit and even in blood. Angelina was there for me when my husband took his own life. Our children grew up together in this neighborhood of Nobe,WV.and were as brothers and sisters. When we lost Marlo, we lost family. There is no comfort for a brokenhearted mother who has lost her child. How many have thought of Angie? A mother carries her children in her heart forever. When Angie wept at Teays Valley, I wept. This will never go away. Nothing will replace the father that Marlo was, or the son, or the brother, or the policeman that he was. Those who knew of his unhappiness should have contacted his family members who knew him from childhood. Marlo had made this known. Why was it kept secret? Respect to Marlo's sons, Angie,Bobby,Joseph,Nancy and Tammy.

I worked almost 20 years as a WVSP civilian. Our troopers have one of the most dangerous, thankless jobs possible. They put their lives on the line for us 24/7. They have enough stress on a daily basis, without worrying about what type of punishment the administration is going to mete out next. One would think the current governor would have the guts to stand up for them, admit he made a mistake, and appoint a Colonel who knew how to treat these professional men who risk so much for the citizens of WV. Gonzo was a good man, always ready to make someone smile. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. WAKE UP WV politicians!!! You're not invincible, despite your lack of consciences. If the media and citizens of WV don't stand up and do something about the travesty of the current WVSP administration - shame on you!

Posted by: Walsh451 on Aug 22, 2007 at 03:06 AM
Now a former Trooper with almost 8 years when I resigned in 2006; I never served on a detachment with Gonzales, I only worked details here and there with him. From what I remember of his reputation, when he was allowed to actually do his job, he was a model of what other Troopers should strive to be like. My thoughts and prayers are with the Gonzales family. I also pray for those who continue to wear the green. It was an honor to serve the citizens of WV. It was also an honor to serve with the fellow Troopers who do the job with their heart for the right reasons. May God Bless the West Virginia State Police.

I have foolowed this story from the moment I came home from work and learned of Trooper Gonzales death. I find it interesting that here we are a month later and the story has died down and I expect will be swept under the rug just as most of us expected. There has been no update in the past week from WSAZ on this story. Why? WSAZ was the only news station who "seemed" to care that this investigation take place and now even they have dropped it from their daily web-site. Governor Joe is doing just what he planned all along...he knew it would all die down eventually and he wouldn't have to stand up and take the heat on this one! He's a jerk!

From a mother's perspective I am writing.I have buried a son before his time and there is no recovery.Time does not take care of it, but you do get used to the pain and hole inside and learn to go on.Learning to handle the anger is another task to be reckoned with.As for the reason that this traggic death happened, it may never be known for sure. From comments posted I believe there are extreme problems with WVSP and they need a place to have a voice.I hope things there will begin to change. As for the reason that Marlo died, nothing should be assumed.I know when it comes to protecting your children, a parent can wear many masks to keep them from knowing truths that might hurt them.Multitudes of people knew Marlo, but it seems to me that possibly no one would have known him any better than his mother and brothers.

I'm tired of going to all the trouble to write comments and WSAZ not posting them.If your not going to post all comments then why even bother with it at all.Now I can understand not posting comments with dirty words.

Posted by: Tired of Winning on Aug 15, 2007 at 03:56 PM
I am tired of other Law Enforcement and some WVSP officers bashing and comparing numbers with each other. Its not a race. I am a Troop and I can care less who is winning in stats. Thats what's wrong with our dept in the first place. Nor do I care if you get to turn your reports over to an investigator, or you do yours all the way through, or we serve DVPs, we file the sex offenders and fingerprint humanity for jobs. Everyone of you should shut up and just take police calls. WVSP has idiots in charge. So what? That will change next administration like it always does. Stop letting them think we are in a race for stats and when you get EPA'd for low activity So Chas. Troops, get a copy of your buddy's EPA from a slow county along with his her stats and ask why they get paid the same to do less work to your attorney.

Posted by: Tired of Whining on Aug 15, 2007 at 12:00 PM
This site is becoming a bigger joke then the WVSP are. All the whinning about how they have to do this, how they do that. I believe all the Law Enforcement officers have done the same work they do. The oly difference is they can not pick and choose what calls they take like the WVSP does. Check your local 911 and get the facts.

MY CONDOLENCES TO THE GONZALES FAMILY FIRST AND FOREMOST. I AM FROM NJ/NYC AREA AND FOUND THIS STORY QUITE INTERESTING . I MYSELF FIND THE STATE POLICE TO BE MUCH MORE RESPECTFUL TOWARDS THE GENERAL PUBLIC THAN THE MUNICIPAL COPS. MUNICIPAL COPS HAVE A CHIP ON THEIR SHOULDER FOR SOME REASON. POSSIBLY BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT TROOPERS. NOW EVERY GOVERNMENT AGENCY IN THIS COUNTRY I AM SURE HAS THEIR LITTLE POLITICAL POWER TRIPS. WHAT I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND IS WHY THE SUICIDE RATE IS SO HIGH FOR COPS. I MEAN EVERY COMPANY I WORKED FOR HAS A CORPORATE LADDER, AND IT SEEMS LIKE EVERYONE TRIES TO MAKE THEIR COMPETITOR LOOK BAD, AND THIS PERSON SLEPT WITH THE BOSS SO THAT IS WHY SHE RECIEVED A PROMOTION. BUT MY BEEF WITH PEOPLE WHO WORK IN LAW ENFORCEMENT ALL OVER NJ AT LEAST IS THAT THEY THINK THEY ARE EXEMPT TO ABIDE BY THE LAWS. WHEN THEY ARE OFF DUTY AND ON DUTY. I DONT KNOW IF YOU READ NYC/NJ NEWS BUT ITS EVERY WEEK NOW THAT YOU HEAR OF A FAMILY WIPED OUT FROM A DRUNK OFF-DUTY COP

Well, it's almost action time. This place, originally intended to be an outlet for those to express grief and to honor Gonzo, has essentially deteriorated into a haven for malcontents and ne'er do wells. You decide if that is you or not. Now is the time to move beyond this site and start to put your words into action. If you truly do have legitimate concerns and/or grievance with the WVSP, you have an obligation to bring it to the light of day...that is if you are sincerely worried that more people will take the actions Gonzo did because of the way the WVSP does "business". Step up and be a man about this if it really is that bad. You owe it to yourselves, your families, other Troops and the good people of the State of WV. If you are not willing to take this critical step, and things are that bad, then it's time to either shutup or get out. Show some pride and dignity. In the long run you will not be sorry. Sincerely, A Friend.

I know things sometime feel like an uphill battle, however, we all have problems that will always be there. I have fought politics for almost 25 years now. We get paid to do this sometimes thankless job. Let's work together and do the best we can for the public we were sworn to protect. There are so many good citizens and fellow officers that expect and need us to be on the top of our game. Stand tall, be proud of WV and proud of the department and profession we chose. This comment section will not accomplish one thing. If things are unbearable, the majority must unite as one and demand a change.

To the ones comparing State Police to Sheriffs and local Police. It is true some are priviledge to good training. and some have it short. regardless all of us are Brothers in arms. Stop the fight and comparisons. The real Police officer is made by his actions and not the uniform. Dont compare power or work load. We all are in te same side. It is the big me little you atititude that they used on Marlow, and you see the results. His own people made his life miserable with that BIG MAN attititude towards him. Is that what they were trained to do?, and by who? how many big Troops does it take to belittle another?.... Be brothers and watch for each other in te street. Me and you is all we have as back up. Stop the nagging and get to work on who pushed Marlow. and do it profecionally, lets not lower our selves to their level. Use the proper chain of Cmmnd and Authority. Keep pushing the Gov. until he has no more excuse to turna deaf ear.

Don't worry about your IP address. The best thing that could happen to you is if they would get your IP address. You're biggest problem would be, would you own the State Police and give WSAZ to your spouse or the other way around? Lawyers would be lined around the block to take your case. Relax I'll be in line.........

I think it's time for the troops to take the Nancy Boy gloves that the liberals forced on us off. Police the state like we policed it when I was in. We got respect, if not given, we took it. We tryed to police our areas using mutual respect, if that didn't work we policed it with fear and that always works with coward criminals who prey on the week. We all realized that ALL police officers were doing the same job and considered ourselves lucky but not better for being troopers. TAKE YOUR DEPARTMENT AND THE STATE BACK and let the chips fall where they may. With Honor and Courage you may die but cannot fail. If someone like Barnett invites you outside, take him up on it. I'm pretty sure he'll stay in his chair.......To all the mouth fighters on this blog........if you are not a cop, if you have never had to pick up a weapon and take that step forward then please shut your sewers.Leave the troops alone or you may find them leaving you alone.

Don't worry, the way we're firing people, we'll have another class soon and you can try again. Then again, maybe you should stay where you have backup right beside you. You might not be able to handle a situation alone for an hour or so. The Buckskin Council is looking for good den leaders as well, if your interested.....

Posted by: To Anonymous on Aug 13, 2007 at 03:48 PM
I think what you mean is send some cops from New York or LA to WV and let them see what it's like to work as the only cop in an entire county for a weekend. The usual backup for a trooper in a rural county is 45 minutes. The average time for backup in New York is as soon as your partner can get out of the car. Get some sense and your facts straight.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 13, 2007 at 10:25 AM
More training in the academy doesn't mean more training period. And certainly doesn't mean more experience. Sorry, just the facts.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 13, 2007 at 08:41 AM
The troopers who are complaining need to be sent to New York city or LA or DC and see what police work really is,see what it really is to putt your life on the line.Aboult two days of that and they would be begging to come back to WV With Col.Lemmon where all they have to do is chase kids on atv's and pick up parole violators from arrests allready made by better trained Federal law enforcment.

Posted by: response on Aug 13, 2007 at 03:54 AM
To WVSPSadBunch: you're way off the mark with your statement concerning a trooper's workload in relationship to other law enforcement officers. Get your facts straight before you make such statements. Cadets receive more training than their Basic Officer counterparts, and they are held to a higher standard. In the United States, there is a term known as federalism. Under federalism, the WVSP has statewide jurisdiction. That's just the way it is. Troopers are not god-like, but with that fact alone, some perceive Troopers to have such an attitude, when in reality, they do not.

Posted by: Press/? on Aug 12, 2007 at 09:24 PM
Does anyone else think it's odd that there has been no press, etc. about this tragedy and the many complaints about the WVSP anywhere except WSAZ? Manchin/Lemmon have "no comment". Are they just waiting for it to die down?

It is quite clear that Manchin has no intentions of making any changes in the leadership of the WVSP when he is attending social functions with the Lemmons. All State workers need to concentrate on next years elections and vote in a real leader, not a dictator.

Since marlo's death there is a family left hurt , angry, confused, and trying to function to make it in every day life.Life around them has not stopped so they are forced to move forward and it is almost unbearable for each of them right now. I pray that the ones making life so hard for these officers get caught up in it and have to get out. There is PLENTY of proof. Lets all pray that it all comes to where it needs to be and pray for our gov. to do the right thing . No other families need to live in this hell. Unless you have lived life with a loved one in the state police, you have no idea what is going on and the kind of needless stress put on these people.

To WVSPSadBunch. Sorry you couldn't get in as a Trooper. I treat every officer with respect. I was a city officer first! And this BS about police in populated areas doing more work in a year than a Trooper does in a career is just a lie. We don't have detectives to take over for us after we arrive on scene, we have to do ALL of the investigation. I have over 100 felony arrest in less than a year, are you anywhere close to that? Oh, and I'm not in a overly populated area either. What is your underlying problem here that you are not telling? Just because you have a problem with some Troopers in your area, don't start spouting off false statistics about job productivity, you won't win. I'll put my stats up against any officer in any agency. I don't think I'm better than another officer. It's people like you who make it hard not to turn that way though. Don't start souding like the rest of the idiots on this site. You are an officer, act like one.

Gonzo R.I.P. Being in law enforcement for over 10 years I know the problems with the WVSP. They are a control hungry bunch. They wanted a spot in the Kanawha County's Drug Unit but pulled out when they couldn't have full control of the entire unit. Same goes with the Kanawha County 911 system, they didn't join until recently because they couldn't contol it. The admin at WVSP is horrible in that they train these guys that they are better than any other policeman in the state. The simple truth is a policeman in a populated area like Charleston/Huntington does more police work in a year than a trooper does in his/her career. They have to change the entire attitude of the agency because no department likes to work with any WVSP department. Of course there are a few good troopers but as a whole no deputies or officers like to work with them because of their godlike attitudes. The Lemmon admin has enstilled that worse than any other that I have seen. It is sad.

"WSAZ also requested the number of transfers between all detachments in the state for the last decade, but the WVSP says there is no specific record kept of those." The person(s) who advised WSAZ the above told a lie straight out of the gates of hell. There absolutely is a record of all transfers, promotions, demotions, whether permanent or temporary. The WVSP has that information, and is attempting to stonewall the news media in this regard. Take them to court, WSAZ. Demand that they produce the information. It will be most enlightening. Get to them before they crank up the commercial grade shredders in the basement of Department HQ.

i just finished working 19 and half straight hours. covering 2 different counties because of man power shortages. during that shift, i was cursed at, one resisted arrest, another trooper had a large object thrown at him standing next to me, i havent seen my children for three days, i have had little sleep and when i got back to the office i found enough paperwork to last 6 months along with a stack of court subpeoenas most of which are scheduled during my off time when im suppose to be with my family. i also gave a deposition in a civil case for an accident i worked. as far as any person in the private sector who says we have it easy and quit to complaining please tell me if your last airconditioned 8 hour shift was anything like mine and if you needed backup going to the copying machine. but you know what i do the job because i love it. the only thing i expect is a little respect from the public we serve but that simply doesnt happen anymore. people take the wvsp for granted!

WSAZ, good job on the statistics,..the WVSP, told you that they could not provide the number of transfers?. It is my understanding that all tranfers, are usaully done on orders,..you would think that orders/ special orders would have to be kept on file,..sounds like they are getting one over on you,..maybe your getting too close to something.

you know, this blog was set up (I thought) for people to express their sympothy for this trooper's family. There is no since in people saying all these things about the WVSP or any other agency on this comment page. I work full time and I understand the frustration of a job, but this is not the place for it. I just read Aarons comments and bless his heart. I hate that they (his son's or family) have to read this stuff and there is no reason for it. I am so sorry for this family and they will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. I am so sorry for your lose. God Bless each of you.

Right this minute, the current administration, and the top dogs in these agencies, are scrambling to see how many of You/Us, that are still working in these agencies, they can poll to see if You/We will help bail them out now. They are now concerned about being the past administration. If there not contacting those who they believe will fall back in with them, they know they have You/Us already. They are desperate for assistance. They will be asking for Your help “NOW”. What will You / We get if We fold now..........? More of the same!!! They have been considering, in private meetings, pay raises for State Employees in 2009. Naturally, those are the raises not awarded the working people for the last three years. Suddenly, the State has an income tax surplus. You will hear of planning for road repairs. You will be getting hints of pay raise for all State Employees effective “Sometime” after January 2009. TO Miamimadman, your comments among police officer killing themselves for guilt, how would you know, that it was for something horribly wrong, there are many reasons why, none good to kill yourself, guilt for not doing enough, doing to much, unable to seperate the job and life, there is more to it than that. Rodney Robinson was a good man and good trooper, up until he did what he did then committed suicide. Anyone can get to that point, the average age of a police officer or life expectancy is 55 years old, national average of everyone else 77. Why is that because we get killed or kill ourselves, and we kill ourselves in a variety of ways, stress, bullets, bad diets, bad hours, alcohol, ect......

If the administration isn't concerned about these 'anonymous' postings, then why are they trying so hard to find out from WSAZ all who are writing these postings????? It has been told that HQ is having WVSP computers checked to see if any postings are coming from them. And the governor says to come forward, and you will not have to worry about being retaliated against. They're so worried now, they're running around in circles trying to find a head to hunt!

Word from a little birdie is that the WVSP administration is putting pressure on WSAZ to release to them the information on who has been posting on this blog. They're wanting the IP addresses apparently. I guess the pressure is starting to get to them on front row.....

It is obvious that there is major problems within MAPS' Regional Jail Authority and the SP. Why not just demand that an independent forum be established to oversee the investigation process into these two agencies and see how many others shake out as well. The outcome will likely be the appointments made at the top of these agencies. It is obvious that both the WVRJA Ex. Director and Col. Lemmon are both micro managing these agencies into the ground. It is also well known that both of these agencies are having problems keeping personnel, as well as a major problem in attracting additional staffing. Airing differences within the SP is not getting to the point. Those issues can be dealt with later. As a matter of fact, once the administration gets their heads on straight, and get rid of these Major Disasters at the top of these very good, and viable agencies, they will likely be solving many of the very problems being aired here within the SP. "Don't Be Divided Now". Let them distruct.

Has the ability to communicate on an adult level been lost forever? Why would people obviously concerned in the issues described in these comments, not agree to discuss them in a civil manner? Nothing can, nor will be resolved, as long as supposed adults continue to have the kind of discourse with one another, that hopefully they discourage their children from participating in.

For what it's worth: I've noticed that suicide among cops is caused by guilt. I didn't know this man and I don't know his personal history, but in the big picture-Most police who take their own life do so because they felt guilt for something they had done(or percieved themselves as doing) something horribly wrong.

It's not hard to figure that much of the information posted here has the Troops pointing at some of there own, or each other. "DIVIDE AND CONQUER”, that could be exactly what is hoped for here. “That is certainly what they need now to survive”. The more a group of individuals begin to point out each others faults, they quickly get away from the core problems. Everyone has faults. The core problems here is obviously the administration and the appointments they made along the way. What is very likely [shaping up] to happen here, is exactly what the agency heads and the administration needs to happen, .” Split The Opposition”. These are suggestions only, everyone out here are big boys and girls and can make up their own minds about what may, or may not be, happening now. There are too many core issues being placed in the background now. Certainly, this is only one persons perspective.... You decide. It’s what you have established right now, that you have to work with. Don’t be divided.

You have people staying up at night wandering when this all will go away, “OR”, ” what in the world are they to have to now to fix it. Ths is where you “NEED” them to be. Needing to fix it. Many of the postings here “are” from the inside. The inside working outward will “DIVIDE AND CONQUER”. An explosion in that manner will make the primary issues fade away, and they win again, and keep on multiplying within as they pull [suck] those from the outside in. Now what may be something to consider here, and many of you stand to win big, or lose bigger. Which do you want? Band back together now, assure yourselves that the inside is now working outward to split you apart. Work out your personal differences later. Accomplish the priority issues now, before they just fade away. There is a smoke screen now developing. And no one, writing these articles [comments], is being put down here.

Looks to me like Steve Smith would have been better off to have laid low--under that rock where he crawled--after he got the well-deserved boot from the WVSP. His desire for 15 minutes of fame will only likely subject him to more scrutiny than he bargained for. When the good citizens of Belle realize what kind of person they have "Protecting" and "Serving" them they're going to be asking their Mayor and city council for a full explanation. Time to freshen up that resume, dude.

I’m delighted that you can show tons of people how truly ignorant you are.Your entire post was entertaining but I found, “We are under military attack!” to your best comment! Ive visited Calhoun and I can recall some negative aspects of the region. None of which include covert operations, or shrapnel flying into the trenches. These are obvious signs of attack yet most people find it to be a peaceful place to live. It’s obvious that as state troopers, citizens should want them to have adequate training. Or would you rather have some untrained hillbillies out brandishing guns (Kind of like the Calhoun police that were mentioned at some point)? Were you aware that two of the TWO deputies have not even passed their physicals to be accepted into the academy? I think that the real issue is that you are using this blog as free ad space for your website. So why don’t you do us all a favor, cash your SSI check, buy ya some spam and have some respect for the people who put a badge on everyday

What started out as what could have been a help to the Gonzales family has now turned into a vent line to air the WVSP dirty laundry. As much as there needs to be a change in the WVSP hiearchy, we are fooling ourselves if we think it will happen. The only thing that will happen is the State will withhold funding from us when the legislature convenes in February. The public will tire of hearing the woes of the SP and it will be swept under the rug and forgotten. It would be great if something positive could come out of this. I guess I am a pessimist, because I seriously doubt anything good can come of this. The WVSP has lost the respect of many through this ordeal and the events leading up to this.

Then he was incompentent, I realize that he now works for the Belle City Police Dept. but I am sure that he told some big story and they will figure it out. After leaving the State Police he worked at Mt. Olive Correctional Complex as a Corrections Officer, he was beat up by an inmate after locking doors and putting himself in a bad situation and did not ask for backup, can we say "Stupid." He went around to every small town in Fayette and Kanawha Counties begging for a job as a City Policeman. He is useless--anyone could see that after watching his interview.

There is always dirt in politics, there will always be good & evil. I am sorry for all Gonzos family. The sad truth, Aaron, is that there are people out here that have absolutely been mistreated by WVSP for no reason other than the perverse & sadistic nature of the trooper, man or woman. We can obey the law, & those that have rule over us & still be persecuted because they enjoy belittling people, trying to take their dignity away in order to make them feel better about themselves & what miserable human beings they are. Unfortunately, this appears to be happening to both civilians and troopers. Aaron, if you know there are those who made your father miserable for no reason whatsoever, it should show you that there are those of us out here terrified to say anything for fear of our lives & loved ones. Now, the stage is set. All the Gov. has to do now, is set up that forum to allow those who "DO" want to come forward to have the proper setting. When one tells all under oath, it “TRULY” puts things in a whole new perspective. The truth will likely prevail. Wait, maybe that could be the problem, “the truth”. Could all the real truths put the administration is a worse light than it now appears? Very possible. Some would now like to see a Police Review Board. It once seemed to be too much of a control issue. Now, it looks like an answer to many problems being aired here. With the independent forum, if one can be put one in place without some of the current insiders appointed, things could be shaken out over a couple of months. However, if things are really what is being brought forward here, that will not happen. The next election, may very well, depend on the outcome here. Open for suggestions. Please don't let Gonzo down. This is a real way in showing appreciation to the fallen.

He didn't seem to mention that he would routinely seize items and fail to properly document them. He didn't mention the time he removed his badge from his uniform and tryed to turn it in all the time while crying uncontollably. Since his resignation, he has had numerous jobs all ending with him being terminated or resigning. WSAZ, you are way off the mark and are not repoting responsibly.

Hey Troop, obviously you're taking my posts seriously since you spent time and energy actually responding - and with such acumen I might add. You should win the Pulitzer for that post. Have you met Beth? You two should get along well. She's a member of Mensa when she's not watching Oprah. If I was wrong Troop you wouldn't be so p-oed.

Then it started to get a little bit rocky. He was transfered to South Charleston, well that was the end of my Dad, he was not the same father that would take me to work or I would see playing with Jacob, he acted as if we were not even there, his response as to why he was acting that way...."work." Some comments have been left about SP are over paid and under work, BS!!! Teachers get paid more, other states pay their troopers 15 to 20 thousand more than WVSP. Yeah, everyone has issues at work. Do you see dead people, go to drug busts, take domestic calls, or get called to shootings at your work. Most likely not, most of you probably sit in an office dealing with computers or paper work, WOW HOW STRESSFUL!!! Yeah sure people will comment after me and say negative things towards me, go ahead I DO NOT CARE!! I LOVED MY FATHER AND HE LOVED "ALL" OF HIS FAMILY! NOT ONE OF YOU HAS A CLUE OF THE STRESS MY FAMILY IS GOING THROUGH RIGHT NOW AND MOST OF YOU CAN ONLY LEAVE NEGATIVE COMMENTS!!!

The WVSP Administration is going nowhere people! Ruth Lemmon has Gov. Joe by the short hairs and we all know that's the only reason the "old Man" got the job in the first place. Why doesn't someone ask Facemyer about Joe's promise to the legislators to get rid of Lemmon by July 1st, but when Ruth found out, she went storming over to the Gov's mansion and told Joe that if he tried to fire her husband, she wouldtake him down and ruin his political career. So the question is...what dirt does she have on Joe, and why does she think the WVSP has to pay the price? Maybe she's threatening to go public about an affair, or maybe go public about a girlfriend who has a baby...Yes folks, politics are a dirt business and you have to be careful with whose bed you crawl into. This administration is pathetic with the exception of a few good men. Major Dave Williams should have been appointed Col. and Lt. Col. Bruce Sloane should have Tucker's position. Tucker has never been for anyone but himself!

I am the middle child of Marlo's and I of the three of us knew him the most and have memories of him, he was a great father, we may not have had a lot of time to spend with eachother due to my football, school and his work schedules. He always made me laugh and smile, even on my worst days, everytime we got off the phone or He or I went to bed, we made sure to say, "I Love You," to eachother. My father cared for all of his family, starting with Jacob. I believed he loved my little brother more than anything. Yes, he did love Angel, my brother Adam, and myself. To my uncles, cousins, grandmother and grandfather, he did to love you. He did like his job but he didn't like some of the people who he worked with. I know this because he told me this. Sure, my father's death isn't any different than other people who commit suicide, but the reasons that I believed he did it does make it different. It began when the SP transfered him to Clay Co., for a while things were going smooth.

I love my job. I love going on calls and solving crimes. Writing tickets is boring to me but some enjoy it. I have a car and get paid rather well for what I do. Other than working till I am 55(Cant see me catching a 20 yr old at 55 ha)it's a great job. This is my 4th Superintendant and he is the worst I have experienced. But politics will someday bring in a new Colonal. Hopefully one that is qualified to lead, not one who got his job because his wife got it for him. I am sure the Colonal was a fine Trooper. But he micro manages such that all under him cannot express their opinions and ideas for fear of being replaced. Self preservation. A Captain is an appointed rank. If the Captain has several years left before retirement, he or she will not want to jeopordize their position and return to whatever rank they previously held and sent to wherever that rank will be needed. The Colonal is not a bad man, he just has a bad leadership style which many find oppressive. Oh, and I too pay taxes.

Posted by: Troop 400 should have been 400 = (Pluss) on Aug 6, 2007 at 10:00 PM
To reaffirm, Troop 400 is actually Troop 400 (Pluss). I will continue by saying there is a serious problem within the ranks of the troops. There is a serious problem in having to write so many citations. Insurance companies are the winners here when they can legally, and litterally, fine their own customers just as we have, only much more severely. That is why people don't like getting a ticket, its the surcharge, that terribly large fine, by their insurance carrier. That is the horrible effects of speeding citations, not the $200.00 to $300.00 up front fine. Its the back end fine by their own insurance company.

Hey anonymous, you must not have a real job as much as you post on here. Or maybe you are at work and not doing your job. You are pathetic! So is Kim and Shelia. Talk about cry babies!! You pinheads need to get a life and stop putting your noses in everyone elses! Everyone knows that the majority of law enforcement is honest and does their jobs, if they don't, then they are complete idiots and have an ax to grind. Well your comments just don't cut it now do they? Pure hatred and stupidity is taking over your simple lives. Do you think more than a handfull of other losers on here take what you post seriously? Don't fool yourselves, you are not that important. Marlo was important, not you. You people disgust me and the rest of us hard working men and women. LIVE WITH THAT!! One day the man's gonna come around and you will be judged!

First of all, if sensationalistic media coverage is for undereducated people then that must be why O'Brien and Powers are on the news all the time? Unless you are O'Brien or Powers and you're jealous because you want to be on Nancy Grace? And it wasn't a threat... We're just sick of the WVSP using the media to send the message but refusing to listen when the public sends one back. As for fueling a fire, to borrow the words of Billy Joel "We didn't start the fire, we didn't light but we tried to fight it!" Sometimes the only way to get rid of the stench of trash is to start a fire. Second of all, I've been working since I was 15, and pay my taxes! how about you? or are you one the WVSP troopers that makes their money off the tax books getting a cut for letting meth labs run? What makes you think you can judge people that you've never seen, never met, know absolutely nothing about? Are you psychic or just another WVST that thinks they can do or say anything they want w/o remorse or fear?

WVSP Job duties-How about 85mph down Rt. 2 north of parkersburg w/ lights on with a "very compliant" & NAKED female in the back seat with your Trooper partner, trade seats and go back up rt 2 the same way. Naked teens photographed with alcohol stretched across the hood of a cruiser at the state fair? Naked girl..wait.. she was wearing a duty belt on the Sgts. desk for his birthday. U get a 20 and out retirement package..plus you get a nice appointed position from the governor were you can draw that nice fat retirement and get paid for a "regular" state job plus be in charge of something that u have no previous experience in..sign me up..greatest job ever. I think the incident that landed one of the boys in the big house paints the picture. WVSP drunk in the street..call 911..drunken troops run off the local PD then kick in the door of the complaining citizen, beat him..drive down to the 911 Office and demand the recording? Geez? I need more
