Many seniors are stunned and angry they weren't included in the first place and now, there's still no guarantee.

The problem in getting an ok is the senate's package costs more money. It’s money many lawmakers say the country just doesn't have. A $500 check for seniors could make a huge difference in just making ends meet.

Prescription drugs take a big chunk out of Linda Chapman's monthly budget. She’s a widow now and on social security for the past few years and money is tight.

“When you change from a weekly to monthly income, it makes a big difference in how you handle your money,” Chapman said.

Could a $500 tax rebate, make a difference? Lawmakers in Washington have been voting on a house proposal that would give working folks $600 back, plus $300 for children, but there’s no mention of seniors.

The senate is working on its own plan by cutting the payment of individual tax payers so they won't get as much, but including $500 for seniors on social security.

At one senior center in southern Ohio, there was more than lunch to try and digest. It’s whether seniors should qualify and if they'd spend it to boost the economy or sock it away.

The question still is seen whether seniors make the cut in the proposal before it's given to President Bush to sign.

“It makes more sense for people with a lower income, because they will take it out and spend it as opposed to someone who makes more money and can put it in the bank,” Chapman said.

we senior citizens built this country on our taxes for the ones that paying taxes now good they should get a rebate but we deserve it as well. we worked, we grew old and now we don't matter. shame on this country. senior citizens are not second class citizens are they?

In this country, no one should have to work. Like in Kuwaite, money is invested in the people because the country is so wealthy. "Ask what we can do for our country."? No way. This country turns over trillions of dollars a year. None of us should be working, and the senior should want for nothing. We hire the government to take care of the running of the country. But instead the politicians think that they have the right to give hundreds of billions away, to our enemies, to their personal investments etc. "We ask what you should do for us," you ungrateful theives. When are we going to wake up. The money is always there. We just have to figure out a way to get it for the citizens and not for the politicians private investments, etc. Wise up people if inflation continues we are going to forfeit the money system altogether. But then why should we really care? They (the government) is never going to give any of it to us anyway!

If senior citizens do qualify for the tax rebates, how do they go about applying for it? I have a friend who had to pay $10.00 for a tax person to file the form for her. Where are the forms? Can they be obtained only from a person who fills out income tax forms? WE NEED SOME ANSWERS HERE.

I just recently heard that Ohio is thinking about giving senior citizens a tax refund. Where can I find more information on this?

Posted by: Pat on Feb 14, 2008 at 06:50 PM
All of my ancestors have worked thru out their lives, including my husband, 4 children and myself. Paid into SS, taxes etc. I agree that the seniors deserve the rebates. Eliminate some of the money that is going to immigrants, there wouldn't be as much of a problem. If you don't pay in, you shouldn't be able to draw, SS, SSI, or welfare of any kind. Think of all the raises politicians have voted themselves, it should be up to the public, whether they get a raise or not. Including all the money that goes to our ex presidents. Some of them should have to learn to live on what the average senior citizen has to live on. ( or the working family) I wouldn't want that much money coming in, but it would be nice to be able to afford a decent place to live, food, medical coverage, etc. God said HE would meet my needs, and HE has. Most people aren't contented with that. It's their wants, not their needs, that present problems. Most seniors gave their all to you, now it's time to help them.

I THINK THAT PEOPLE SHOULD MAKE BETTER DECISIONS FOR THEMSELVES INSTEAD OF BEING INVIOUS OF OTHERS,ESPECIALLY SENIORS WHO HAVE SERVED THEIR TIME WIPING SWEAT FROM THEIR BROWS. THEY DESERVE WHAT THEY GET AND MORE, MORE RESPECT FROM PEOPLE LIKE DJ AND AVGJOE. IF YOU RESPECTED YOUR ELDERS, MAYBE GOD WOULD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR BACK!

Posted by: KATIE on Feb 12, 2008 at 03:20 AM
ABOUT SENIORS AND FIXED INCOME FAMILY'S, FIXED INCOME FAMILY'S HAVE TO MAKE THE MOST OF WHAT THEY HAVE, THEY DON'T GET AN INCREASE IN THEY'RE PAY AS PRICES FOR FUEL AND MILK SKYROCKET. THEY HAVE TO CHOOSE TO TAKE FROM OTHER NECESSITIES TO PAY FOR THOSE PARTICULAR NECESSITIES. SENIORS DO TOO. THEY BOTH HAVE NO WAY OF INCREASING THEIR INCOME. MY FAMILY IS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO INCREASE OUR MONTHLY INCOME WHEN NEEDED. IF I COULD CHOOSE, MY SHARE OF A REFUND WOULD BE BETTER SPENT, IF GIVEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO NEED IT THE MOST. SENIORS AND FIXED INCOME FAMILIES.

I THINK THEY SHOULD GET THE REBATE ALSO! ITS PEOPLE GETTING SSI GETS FREE MONEY& FREE HEALTH INSURANCE! I KNOW PEOPLE THAT GETS SSI AND HAVE NEVER WORK IN A DAY OF THEIR LIVES I DONT THINK THEY SHOULD GET IT! A LOT OF SENIORS HAVE TO MAKE FOR THEIR MEDICINE AND EAT! THEY JUST GET MONTHLY CHECKS THATS ALL TO LIVE!

Senior citzens should be included in this deal also. Think how many years that they worked in order to draw the social secuity. They can no longer work , but live month to month, most of us receive paycheks weekly hard enough but try monthly. I say they deserve it.

Posted by: luis on Feb 3, 2008 at 09:34 AM
how sad that there should be a question whether to include seniors or not in the rebates. working families need the rebates but they can spare 100 dollars to releive the sad state of life senior face whether to buy medicines , eat to meals aday or pay for heating or air condition haow sad

Posted by: J.fetty on Jan 30, 2008 at 05:05 PM
The money is just as important to all us seniors. Try living on fixed income. it is hard you have to make choices in eating buying medicines or gasoline or any other necessity. Life is not good when your older an unable to work. think about it or change places with someone who doesn't have health care or savings to rely on. Just my opinion.

Posted by: Avg Joe on Jan 30, 2008 at 02:23 PM
The seniors have everything now as it is. They are drawing social security that will be bankrupt by the time I see retirement age. They also receive assistance on prescriptions, have medical cards, and even get help on their utilities. Most folks can't afford gas or groceries, because they are funding the poor and elderly. They get rebates monthly. If you don't pay income tax, you should not receive this rebate.

To DJ..i wish we only paid $2000.00 in taxes. our tax is higher than most people make. we do NOT get anything. we are in the penalty bracket. our tax is 11 times higher than DJ's and that is just Federal, don't even get me started on this sorry state tax. now for S.S.; seniors do not get free medical care. you must be thinking of the ones on S.S.I.; the ones that are ABLE to work, but, chose not to: alcohol, drugs, crazy, lazy; you get the point. people that DID NOT WORK the check to begin with.

Posted by: shirley on Jan 30, 2008 at 09:46 AM
I would like to respond to DJ's post.I am a senior.I receive a social security check which is a widow's benefit check.Medicaid, don't qualify.Tax free money?maybe so, but my husband worked hard for many years to see to it that I'm taken care of.I suppose by "inc" you mean "ins" which is the abbreviation for insurance.I have no insurance, no Dr.,and I too have pain.Every time I cash my widow check, I remember my husband and how he worked himself to death and paid into social security.THANK YOU!!!
