Many seniors are stunned and angry they weren't included in the first place and now, there's still no guarantee.
The problem in getting an ok is the senate's package costs more money. It’s money many lawmakers say the country just doesn't have. A $500 check for seniors could make a huge difference in just making ends meet.
Prescription drugs take a big chunk out of Linda Chapman's monthly budget. She’s a widow now and on social security for the past few years and money is tight.
“When you change from a weekly to monthly income, it makes a big difference in how you handle your money,” Chapman said.
Could a $500 tax rebate, make a difference? Lawmakers in Washington have been voting on a house proposal that would give working folks $600 back, plus $300 for children, but there’s no mention of seniors.
The senate is working on its own plan by cutting the payment of individual tax payers so they won't get as much, but including $500 for seniors on social security.
At one senior center in southern Ohio, there was more than lunch to try and digest. It’s whether seniors should qualify and if they'd spend it to boost the economy or sock it away.
The question still is seen whether seniors make the cut in the proposal before it's given to President Bush to sign.
“It makes more sense for people with a lower income, because they will take it out and spend it as opposed to someone who makes more money and can put it in the bank,” Chapman said.
