UPDATE FOLLOWING SPEECH

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Hundreds of people endured chilly temperatures Thursday for a chance to hear Senator Barack Obama deliver what his campaign calls a major speech on Iraq and the economy.

Bundled against the cold, members of the crowd say they like Obama's youth and intelligence, and he represents a chance for needed change.

Sistersville resident Carolyn Sterns is a lifelong Republican who recently changed registration so she could vote for Obama.

A former chairwoman of her local Republican Women's Club, Sterns says she is moved by Obama's intellect and his positions on the issues.

The state Republican Party has dismissed Obama's visit as promising nothing more than empty rhetoric.

The Illinois senator visits West Virginia one day after his rival, U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton. With the nomination fight so close, West Virginia's May 13th primary has assumed new significance.

U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller plans to join Obama in Beckley later Thursday.

THURSDAY MORNING:
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- People are already lining up to see President Hopeful Barack Obama in Charleston.

The senator is expected to speak at the University of Charleston. An Obama Spokesperson says he will deliver a major speech on the war in Iraq and the economy.

We're told Senator Jay Rockefeller will also be there. He's already endorsed Obama.

The town hall meeting is expected to start around 11:00am Thursday morning. We're told you must have a ticket to attend the event.

Obama also plans to attend a town hall meeting in Beckley Thursday night.

His visit comes just a day after Senator Hillary Clinton spoke in Charleston and Huntington.

this country is not ran on religion. it is ran on strong leader and concerned man or woman. This people judge obama and they dont even know him. they just know his color and religion. so if u go talk about a man leave his color and religion out of it. listen what he is talking about, he is trying to help us. every man and woman that has a wife or husband or son or daughter over in iraq. are scared everyday, the only thing he wants to do is bring them home safe. why are we over there? because we have the power. yes the iraq's did attack us yes they did kill many of our people. but what give us the right to take over there country, what give us the right to send our soldiers over there. never knowing if they are ever coming back. only thing obama wants is peace and for opur troops to come home. so dont judge a man by his color of skin or the religion that he worship, thats his life and not yours. he only want the best for this country.

Sorry Leah I have to agree with Ty. Ty has spit out more supporting evidence than you have. Someone who is willing to go as far as killing themself and others for what they believe in more than likely follows the strict guidelines of their religion. Those are the ones we should be afraid of. And I'm not only speaking of Muslims. I'm talking about Christians, Jews, Catholics, etc...
