CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Chief Justice Elliott "Spike" Maynard
has conceded the state Supreme Court race.

Former Justice Margaret Workman and Huntington lawyer Menis Ketchum are the two Democratic nominees for the two open court seats and will face sole Republican challenger Beth Walker in the fall.

Maynard released a statement thanking the people of West Virginia for allowing him the privilege and honor of serving them as a judge and justice for nearly 28 years.

“I first want to thank my family, my friends and my supporters who worked so hard everyday during my campaign. The results are mostly now in, the voters have spoken and it appears we’ve lost the race," Maynard said in a prepared statement. "I want to thank the people of West Virginia for allowing me the great privilege and honor of serving them as a judge and justice for nearly 28 years.”

Maynard was considered heavily favored in the race until the release of photographs earlier this year that showed him vacationing in 2006 with Massey Energy's chief executive in Monaco. The coal producer had cases before the court at the time of the vacation.

The photos grabbed national headlines and became campaign fodder after they surfaced in January.

The only other contender for the Supreme Court seat was West Virginia University law professor Bob Bastress.

I wonder how many lives he can ruin before he leaves the bench. Hopefully he will be indicted before he hurts others.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 15, 2008 at 05:31 PM
Are you kidding there is already a national bestseller out about his life is is THE APPEAL by John Grisham. That man knows what he is talking about.

Thank God Brother Don has lost a supporter on high. You know the addage be careful who you step on on your way up...I am firmly convinced Brother Don thinks he can buy anything. Your image with the public looks good with the good deeds your good employees and families do like the secret santa and clean ups etc. The problem is they really are good people being used by you to polish your image. many of the employees want OUT but need the job to support their families. Do the right thing and fix the things you tear up please...

Wayne 10:15, you are right this is a part of a curse that has plagued WV for to long ! This one has proved over and over what he is. Rotten to the core with a stench that reaches to high heaven.

Posted by: Frankly on May 15, 2008 at 07:27 AM
Yes, now is your chance to really be somebody and be honorable Maynard for real. If you would get together with John Grisham you two could have a field day and make US history. You know what potential is here and I'am sure John would be interested once he was brought up date..

Spike, now that you're out all of these other players will act like they don't know you. Now why don't you write a nationwide best seller on your past. If it contained all of the whos wheres and whens nothing that has ever been done or put in words could compare to this.. I'll bet the justice dept. would give you immunity and you could be the most famous person in the country... Do somthing right before you die it's all over now ! !

Anonymous @ 607pm: if you think that these 2 men are so wonderful, then why don't you use your name? Maybe you are a little biased since your husband works for Massey, and you have to admit that their relationship is quite unethical. Sure they can be friends and vacation together, but if Spike was a good judge, then he would have dismissed himself from any case involving Massey and Blankenship. This is why the people of our state are against "Big Coal". It isn't because coal is not important to our future economy; it is because of the owners of the companies buying judgements and corrupting our state.

He will be working for Massey before he leaves the court house. Oh that's right, he was doing that while in the court house.

Posted by: Collins on May 14, 2008 at 07:31 PM
Now the citizens need to continue to clean out the bench by getting Robin Davis out as well. She is a fox dressed as a sheep. How could she vote against Collins in case vs Red Roof Inns. Only a crook would allow a company to publish defamatory statements against a good employee. I think she may be on the take.

I THINK IT IS A SHAME THAT A GOOD JUDGE WAS OUSTED OVER HIS FRIENDSHIP WITH DON BLANKENSHIP. WHY EVERYONE IS AGAINST MASSEY AND DON BLANKENSHIP IS UNBELIEVABLE TO ME. IF YOU EVER MET ANY OF THESE 2 MEN YOU WOULD KNOW THAT THEY ARE GOOD MEN THAT HAVE DONE ALOT FOR THE CITIZENS OF THIS STATE. AND FOR THE PEOPLE MAKING THE COMMENTS THAT WV WAKE UP AGAINST BIG COAL..STOP AND THINK, DO YOU USE ELECTRIC? AS A WIFE OF A COAL MINER WHO IS EMPLOYED BY MASSEY I WILL SAY THAT THEY ARE AN EXCELLENT COMPANY TO WORK FOR AND THEY DO SO MUCH FOR THEIR EMPLOYEES. AND OTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY. EDUCATE YOURSELVES ON ACTUAL FACTS BEFORE YOU JUDGE ANYONE!

Posted by: trum on May 14, 2008 at 05:33 PM
thank God he's out, thank God he's out, thank God Almighty we finally have him ousted, look out the rest of you, you will be leaving too,

Posted by: Dirk on May 14, 2008 at 03:29 PM
I wonder how long it will be before Spike gets an executive position at Massey?

Posted by: Citizen on May 14, 2008 at 01:48 PM
The two ladies who received the nomination should use Menis Ketchum commerical against him. Remember it said that the "ladies" are always right, in the tv commerical that was filmed at Jim's.

So long SPIKE. I hope that you get your day in court in front of a judge that throws the book at you. Hopefully you won't be on vacation with him/her this summer. See ya on the streets. Pack your gown away you are DONE. FINALLY !!!!!!

Posted by: MS on May 14, 2008 at 11:47 AM
I bet he now wonders if the French Riviera vacation was worth it.

Posted by: Jordan on May 14, 2008 at 10:34 AM
Well, well its nice to see that every once in awhile the Fox does get caught in the hen house. This just shows as a reminder to elected officials that when they forget the people ( and choose big business) that put them in office, there days are numbered. Then you have Blankenship saying that its a shame when people use the media to promote smear tactics. Well Don they learned smear tactics from you, the last campaign was littered with yours. I just wonder if " Spike " will still be on the guest list to Don's parties. You know the ones with all the WVU and MARSHALL coaches.

Posted by: Wayne on May 14, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Matt, there's still Truman in office.

Give Mingo a little time ... they'll be back at it again!

Let the perfect person be the first to cast stones! Until you are perfect, dont judge anyone else!

Posted by: booger on May 14, 2008 at 08:54 AM
The people who voted for Margaret Workman obviously have never met the woman or seen how she acts in public. If they did, she would receive NO votes.

Posted by: From Mingo on May 14, 2008 at 08:43 AM
I wouldn't say Spike is a bad man, and he was a good judge in the past, but his personal frienships should not have been a factor. I think a picture is worth a 1,000 words, and hopefully this will send a much needed message to Don Blankenship. We need coal in WV, but we don't need corruption.

Posted by: Kim on May 14, 2008 at 07:28 AM
My sentiment exactly...who IS going to by Don Blankenship now?

Posted by: Earl on May 14, 2008 at 05:31 AM
Who is Don Blankenship going to buy now?

Posted by: John on May 14, 2008 at 01:59 AM
THERE IS JUSTICE. SO LONG SPIKE YOU HAVE FINALLY BEEN CAUGHT AND OUSTED. HOPEFULLY YOU WILL BE ARRESTED SOON & OFF TO JAIL.

Posted by: Concerned Citizen on May 14, 2008 at 01:27 AM
A victory for the people and a stunning defeat for Big Coal! I never thought it would happen. Is W.V. finally wising up? I sure hope so.

Posted by: denise on May 14, 2008 at 12:38 AM
No matter what anyone says about Maynard, he has been a SUPER JUDGE. If you do not know him personally, do not judge him. You all are casting stones at him, when you should be checking to see how many sins you have done in your life. ELLIOT "SPIKE" MAYNARD WILL ALWAYS BE #1 IN MY EYES.

Posted by: Matt on May 14, 2008 at 12:38 AM
Bye Bye Liar, Now Mingo County can't be blamed for disgracing the State again.
