SUTTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Braxton County Superintendent says she's disappointed the excess levy failed in Tuesday's Primary Election, but she's very excited the school bond passed.

In fact, Carolyn Long says this is the first levy to pass in Braxton County since 1960.

The excess levy needed 60 percent of voters' support to pass. With all precincts reporting, 2,606 voted against the levy, 2,377 voted in favor of it.

The levy was designed to help fund teacher salaries. Long says the school board plans to ask voters to reconsider the levy in November during the General Election.

Long says the county needs the money to make sure it doesn't lose any teachers. If it doesn't get approved, Long says some teachers could be cut.

Meanwhile, the school bond will support the county's community schools. Long says the county currently has 6 small elementary schools and the bond will help make sure they all stay open and don't face the threat of consolidation.

The levy bond also needed 60 percent of voters' support for it to pass.

A gas price sign is shown in McKinney, Texas, Friday, July 18, 2008.
