NEW THURSDAY:
Since Senator Robert Byrd's release from the hospital, his spokesperson, Jesse Jacobs, says the Senator asked if Vice President Dick Cheney apologized for his remarks about West Virginia.

"He noted that the apology was issued from the Vice President’s office on behalf of the VP, not directly from the VP himself – noted it was a start but reiterated he should not have said it in the first place," said Jacobs.

ORIGINAL STORY
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Vice President Dick Cheney Monday made a familiar joke about people who live in West Virginia while speaking to the National Press Club in Washington D.C.

Cheney was explaining how he is a distant cousin to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

"We'd always known about the Cheney family line on my father's side of the family, back to Massachusetts in the 1630s. My grandmother was named Tyler but it turned out she was descended from a Richard Cheney, same last name, who landed in Maryland in the 1650s," Vice President Cheney said. "So I had Cheneys on both sides of the family -- and we don't even live in West Virginia. You can say those things when you're not running for re-election."

Those in attendance at the National Press Club and Mr. Cheney laughed at the joke.

The issue has been a sensitive one for many who live in West Virginia.

Earlier this year, Governor Joe Manchin criticized a casting call for a Hollywood movie set in West Virginia that looked for children with other worldly features and encouraged regular looking children to not apply.

Years ago, West Virginia Governor Bob Wise publicly admonished Abercrombie & Fitch for making shirts that said "It's all Relative in West Virginia" and West Virginia : "No Lifeguard at the Gene Pool."

WSAZ contacted Vice President Cheney's office via e-mail and requested an interview. Lea Anne McBride, responded to the email with an apology.

"The Vice President's offhand comment was not meant to hurt anyone. On reflection, he concluded that it was an inappropriate attempt at humor that he should not have made. The Vice President apologizes to the people of West Virginia for the inappropriate remark," said McBride.

STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR JOE MANCHIN (D-WV):
"I truly cannot believe that any vice president of the United States, regardless of their political affiliation, would make such a derogatory statement about my state or any state for that matter.

"West Virginia is home to some of the most patriotic people in the nation and our sons and daughters have answered the call to duty every time a president has needed their service. They deserve better from the vice president, and so I would simply ask for his apology."

STATEMENT FROM SENATOR ROBERT BYRD (D-WV):

"That a man who has ascended to the seat of Vice President of the United States would openly display such contempt and astounding ignorance toward his own countrymen is an insult to all Americans. Now that he or the Administration he represents no longer needs their vote, Mr. Cheney apparently feels that he is now free to mock and belittle the people of West Virginia. With his trademark arrogance, the Vice President even added 'You can say those things when you’re not running for re-election.'"

"This pitiful comment is not entirely surprising when you consider the source. Vice President Cheney’s words reflect the attitude of an administration and a party that says what they must to get elected and then turns their backs on those they promised to represent."

STATEMENT FROM REP. SHELLEY MOORE CAPITO (R-WV):

"This is exactly the type of stereotyping that we don’t need from our elected officials. It’s disrespectful, and it’s certainly not funny. The Vice President should know better than to make a remark like this one. We all work hard to further West Virginia’s good name, only to have comments like this tarnish it. As a proud state, I can say we are disappointed."

Well did anyone ever bother to look at Chaneys family blood line. He was an inbreed from Massachusetts.

Gee Whiz...I can't believe all of the uproar about Dick Cheney's statement. Of all people to comment on it...Robert Byrd.OMG. Now there's a joke in itself. And, as far as the V.P.'s comments; What about complaining to the designers of the new Camden Park golf course? A toothless dufthless looking character with a shotgun. I'll bet if it were a young black man with a 9 MM, it would be an absolute outrage and we would never ever hear the end of it. Don't get all up in arms. Just an example to make a point. But people, get real.....let's laugh at ourselves. It makes the world a better place to find humor in things. Oh and while I'm at it. I was watching the news tonight......Toothless guy talking about the storms and a lady that looked like her clothing hadn't been washed in weeks talking about her dogs. Jeez, couldn't she find some better way to utilize her assistance than to have 3 dogs (well 2 now)? So c'mon folks quit your whining about some senseless humor.

Who ever he is tell him to let me know where he lives. I would love to meet the no good b----ard. He sounds like someone that is about as stupid as Cheney. He might be related to him. They sound like they might have the same mother . could be . Lets . Lets all write to him and give him a piece of our mind. Let him know how all of w.va people feel

Randal, you sound like you are about to burst a blood vessel. Now calm down, you're going to run your blood pressure up. Do you really think that bad of WV? Come on, now, tell us what you really think. Come on, please, come on and let it all out. Didn't your mother teach you any better than that? I hope you don't always demean people that way, that is such a waste of good time. Try and volunteer some of that energy to some worthy cause.

Let's face it all anyone has to do is watch WSAZ to see that W.V. is a bunch of HICKS. Clinton must of watched WSAZ news and then thought these HICKS are the best chance I have to get votes, I'll just show up and these HICKS will fall for me and it worked. WSAZ news shows how bias and unprofessional they are in thier reporting of coverage. Like some sour grape kids. Even your state leaders that you keep in office for life don't listen to you HICKS WSAZ. WSAZ weather could not report what the weather was even if they were reporting live in a open field. WSAZ also gives weather warnings for Kentucky and Ohio before W. V. even on the running bar. WSAZ tells viewers in W.V. news about Ohio and Ky. more than W.V. hicks. Even tonight they can't report thier state elementry school sport scores with out taking a jab at The Detroit Red Wings, What HICKS. They blame other cities for thier crime, but hey WSAZ look around, Your copper stealing PILL HEADS are your own local kissing cousins.LAME WSAZ

The ignorance of a high official such as the vice-president of the United States is beyond my comprehension. Who does he think he is to belittle anyone much less an entire state? Very poor representation from our government.

Posted by: Janet on Jun 4, 2008 at 06:30 PM
When Cheney's future father-in-law met him, they should have realized that Cheney needed to attend finishing school before being introduced to society. Cheney would have learned proper behavior and how to act in public.

Don't say to much to VP Cheney he may fall over with a heart attack. I understand that it was a joke but when he needed WV he would only build us up. He is good at shooting someone down. This time it was not one person, it was the Wild and Wonderful State of West Virginia.

He should have to come here and live for the rest of his life,to see what our state all about. But I'm sure with his millions he don't have to worry about were the next meal is coming from and his medical coverage is provided for the rest of his natural life, now as for his life after death that is between him and the Almighty. But in my opinion he needs to ask for forgiveness in a mighty way from the people of the Great State of West Virginia and the Almighty for the statement he made on National Television. We are a hard working people. We send our young men and women to war for what ever the real reason was to begin with. Also the hard working men and women of our state have KEPT HIS LIGHTS ON and in the process of killing themselves they have to drink from 3rd a world water supply. Even Don Blankenship has better manners because he knows who butters his bread. And that my Friend is not even a good thing.

Well you so-called Republicans voted for the Bush/Chaney ticket to elect them. Now you really see how these "rightous", christians think about you. Will you STILL VOTE FOR McCain? Instead of Obama? For you "racist" hicks, now you really know what the Republican party thinks of you!!!

I'm from KY and don't get offended when I hear jokes about people from my state. I just laugh it off as silliness. We all have heard (and probably told) jokes or made the same kind of commments as VP Cheney made from time to time. People living in KY, WV, and OH commonly joke back and forth about our 3 states and have for years. Certainly those in the public eye should be careful about making such commments, but I believe he truly meant no disrespect to, nor stereotyping of, the people of WVA, nor should such misspeaking become politicized as it has, especially since he apologized. People are way too easily offended these days over such insignificant things, when we should be offended and outraged about much more serious issues facing our society and world.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 4, 2008 at 10:52 AM
are every one of you saying you have never made a joke about an Ohioian or a Kentuckian? I bet you have and just don't want to admit it because you would look like a hypocrite.

Posted by: Lance on Jun 4, 2008 at 10:09 AM
This just proves that the current administration truly is ignorant and has no respect for anyone. Their only concern is how much money they are making off the American people. Cheneys apology is not accepted. Although at this point we do not have much to choose from at least he and Bush will no longer be the laughing stock of the world.

Posted by: Sharon on Jun 4, 2008 at 10:02 AM
This just goes to show just how unkuth some of the politians are.. Make jokes about us but we have more people who have fought in wars than most states & the back bone of this country was built with our loyal people, yes a "country boy will survive" & we can do with out for the better good as well as because we do not have in the first place. The only oil for some of us, not only in WV but most of the Counry is on our dirty hands but his are clear & the money in his pockets - he puts his pants on the same way we do - didn't his Mother ever teach him that if you can say nothing good about someone - don't say anything at all!!!! no wonder we are all fed up with such - Hollier than thou attitudes.

Posted by: Debbie on Jun 4, 2008 at 09:47 AM
I agree with Joyce! Why take the time to vote when the so called delegates vote their way and do not back the vote of their state! Rockafeller and Wise will not get my vote again! Shame on them for not backing the voters of this state...which are the same freaking party that voted them in! I say it is their last term!

Posted by: Ken on Jun 4, 2008 at 09:41 AM
I don't know what the big deal is... We are to sensitive. If anything, the joke is on the VP. I think it's a sad day when you run the country like the biggest flunky in history, and can find a nerve to crack a joke about anything pertaining to the citizens you serve. The laugh will be given to WV in the end, when the history books read about an administration who managed the country worse than Past President Tyler.

Posted by: DKR on Jun 4, 2008 at 09:24 AM
I am proud to be a Christian, American, and Mountaineer! These comments will never make me hang my head in shame. Many of our politicians have become the ruination of our country. No prayer in school, no posting of The Ten Commandments, no more One Nation Under God, no more IN GOD WE TRUST. Just more baby killing, gay marriages, becoming more hated by the world, more forcing our beleifs on other people. What are our beliefs? We have to wait on our government to tell us. America sure isn't what it used to be. I am scared for our chlidren. What will it be like in their lifetime? Will they all become prisoners of our own government? How sad. Pray for our country and its citizens. Vote for the lesser of the evils and then pray that they don't drag our country down further. These sure are scary times, both morally and economically.

Posted by: Jealousy gets you nowhere on Jun 4, 2008 at 09:19 AM
People joke about West virginia for two main reasons. 1) They are uneducated about this state and its importance. 2) They are jealous os the beauty and close-knit relations of the people that live here. Everyone talks about SMALL WV. Did you know WV is small because they don't consider elevation in sq. mi.? If you flattened out our mountains, WV is LARGER then the entire continental US! WV also provides the largest number of military personel. WV also houses some of the government's most important office and protective locations like the main FBI forensic crime lab and nuclear shelter. Keep laughin' it up all you "outsiders", whose going to to be the ones laughing when you want or need inside these borders? I would also like to thank Mr. Cheney's parents for naming him so appropriately!

I am offended. Now I will go stand in line to get my scratch offs, run across the bridge to KY to get my cheap smokes, run by hillbilly hot dogs to get lunch, shoot off my muzzleloader, put on my mountaineer shirt, shoot off my muzzleloader, and do some donuts on my atv.

I am a life-long resident of WV and I am not married to any of my relatives. I am appalled at all of you that group all of WV in the same category. I have all my teeth and am a professional person. I work every day as do all of my friends and my children. Those of you who do not live in this state just shut up. See I can even spell and punctuate a sentence.

Posted by: C on Jun 4, 2008 at 07:21 AM
I don't see that it is a big deal every state is noted for something funny. But today one must make note of comments made by Officials because you never know what is next. Cheney might want to remember that WV has the most soldiers per capita than any other state. Perhaps next time he visits Iraq someone will cover him with a barrel of his precious Oil that WV soldiers are dying over. Besides we the people of WV do not count because we voted for Hillary and our governor is throwing our Super Delegate vote to Obama..I say let the Media pour it to him as he has poured it to us as VP.. Go back to your home town Cheney, you have done enough damage in the White house..

This is for PAPA SURF- why would you think only WV makes moonshine, has KKK history and the mistreatment of a black girl by white people? Have you never heard of this kind of thing going on in other states? Maybe you should get the air out of your head and have somebody blow in your ear and give you a refill because you sound like a real airhead. This kind of stuff goes on in every state. Where are you from Papa Surf? I hope you are not representing our beautiful state of WV because you have no idea what WV people are really like. Don't get offended by what this wvgal has to say because afterall I am from WV where racism, KKK, and most all incest is so common that the rest of America doesnt even know where WV is. I bet you are one of those guys when talking about WV you refer to Richmond or Newport Beach huh??? The people of WV have not marketed themselves at all, it has been the media that comes from other states. I am a very proud West Virginian but a disappointed American.

Why is it that West Virginia always bears the brunt of the jokes? Look at this website that shows just how many states allow marriage to first cousins! I was appalled! http://www.ncsl.org/programs/cyf/cousins.htm It isn't legal in WV...but in other states, it is acceptable...I don't see Cheney making fun of them! He showed his ignorance in his statement. I am relieved that he's not running for reelection. They have done quite enough.

Posted by: amused on Jun 3, 2008 at 11:46 PM
Give it up. It was a joke. Everyone has done or heard or laughed about someone or something that wasn't nice at some time in their life. People make jokes over woman on a daily basis. You don't see it being reported on the news as a horrible forbidden thing to have said. Get over it. I guess the old saying is true.. sometimes the truth hurts.

Posted by: Kevin on Jun 3, 2008 at 11:38 PM
For a man that doesn't know how to shoot straight, it looks like he hit this one dead on. It was a joke, laugh or don't laugh and get over it. I can guarantee you what we don't need is a bunch of national coverage or reporters coming to WV to report on this issue. If we get that, we won't have to complain about the WV sterotypes, we'll prove most of them true on national television.

Posted by: Buckeye on Jun 3, 2008 at 11:31 PM
Mr. Chaney, when you sent WV men to fight and DIE in a war that you irresponsibly rushed into, then you gave up your right to casually joke about them or any other state from which you have sent men DIE to feed your political and financial ambitions.

Posted by: Ace on Jun 3, 2008 at 11:25 PM
Give me a break, i thought it was funny no matter what state he used. Get a life and worry about the real problems going around us. If it was about Ky you would of thought it was funny, so what`s the difference.....

This joke was very harmless and funny. I have no idea why everyone is getting offeneded by it. It is the truth for some. I do my genealogy and I have two families were one of my ancestors is not only my double or triple ancestor, but is also and uncle or an aunt. It is just a part of life and it has happened for years. But guess what though, the world keeps on spinning as if nothing ever happened. Right?

oh my goodness, How impolite he is, when he said he could make those comments since he was not up for reelection...Obviously,i don't feel he was qualified when he ran for the election the first time. Thank God he is not up for reelection or maybe he would be telling us what a Wild and Wonderful and Beautiful state WEST BY GOD VIRGINIA Is~ because ya see, we don't raise Rude Inconsiderate Money Eating Hypocrites around my neck of the woods ya here........

I have to admit Chaney is right he can say what he really thinks about West Virginian's now that he doesn't need their vote anymore. They lied to the people of West Virginia in 2000 and 2004 and people voted for them just because they invoked guns,God, and gays. People need to not listen to their lies but look at what they do for the working people. Now we know what the republican really thinks of West Virginia.

Personally, I think the elected officials in WV should have enough of a sense of humor to overlook a comment made in a joking fashion. Although, they can overlook that Obama was out voted by a 2 to 1 margin and still be supported by the Delegates and Super Delegates.

Folks once again I bring to our attention why would this offend WVa when you ignorantly continue to elect an official such as Byrd. There in no wonder WVa is still at the bottom of the barrel for education, etc. Face the facts, unless you do WVa will never prosper; but then again Byrd doesn't desire a population that is prosperous because that steals his "thunder" of how much the State needs him. One Question: Byrd has been an elected official for many many years, what progress has bestowed when you look at the numbers in comparison of the remainder of the country? Pitiful overall results. Oust him once and for all. If he was concerned about people he would have never allowed elected officials such as himself to collect a different pension than the rest of citizens. Think about, he isn't a government employee he is an elected official by "US" but he beleives he desires better than his SUPPORTERS. Wise up WVa!!!!!! Don't let comments by VP bother you when your own betrays yo.

Posted by: M on Jun 3, 2008 at 09:39 PM
Citizens in W.Va. poke fun at citizens of Kentucky and Ohio all the time, now it is your turn. Get over it, it is just a joke and remember it was WVU who gave away diploma to your own Governors daughter, now that is a joke.

So whats next for Mr Cheney is he going to take us "hunting". I know this poor man, is one brain cell shy of being a talking monkey anyways. I dont really care what his opinion is of "Wild and Wonderful West Virginia is his opinion means "NOTHING." I often wonder if Utah and Texas and the ALL the other states that have polygamy compounds get the same comments.

Posted by: Renea on Jun 3, 2008 at 08:42 PM
It is ironic that our countrymen, including West Virginians, have fought and died for the very freedom given to Mr. Cheney so that he can make such disrespectful remarks. This freedom is inherant to him because he is an American. His right to exercise this freedom however, does not protect him from being ignorant. He may have insulted West Virginians, but he showed all of America his true colors.

Posted by: Galifianakis on Jun 3, 2008 at 08:35 PM
Its not the joke about WV that he made that so disturbing. Although inappropriate. His last comment says what we have lived under for 8 years... "You can say those kinda things when you are not running for re-election". So in essence he basically is saying all we have done is lie for 8 years to get where we are and now that its over, heres how I really feel. All great civilizations come to an end unfortuneately we are going down with Jokers like these in office.

Posted by: Pat on Jun 3, 2008 at 08:19 PM
As West Virginians we should be outraged that the media is stereotyping us as racists becuase we chose not to support a raging liberal who snubbed us in a presidential campaign or that we've repeatedly been stupid enough to elect a former KKK member to the Senate or that our once prestigious state university gives away unearned MBAs. Once we start holding ourselves to a higher standard then we can take offense! Until then, we just substantiate their beliefs that we are ignorant heathens!

Posted by: Jamie on Jun 3, 2008 at 07:59 PM
I think it is a shame that he said that about WV. It's not funny at all to me. I was always taught that only bullies belittle others to make themselves feel better or to look better. The off handed remark about the re-election makes the whole thing worse. When will we get a politician without a "feather" in their mouth to just tickle our ear for a vote? I hope one day my children will have true representation in OUR government...

Mr. Vice President, if you can't tell the difference between a duck and a human...how the hell you gonna know the difference between an inbred and a normal person? Your apology is just another political statement, it means nothing to me. West Virginian and proud of it.

The remark made by Cheney is disgraceful. He should be impeached. We should not allow someone who's that IGNORANT to serve as an elected official for the Vice President of the United States of America!!! There are incorrect stereotypes about West Virginia all over the world, and the cause is IGNORANT statements just like that one. As a citizen of West Virginia, I am outraged by Cheney's comment. And furthermore, if you are a citizen of WV and you are not outraged by the comment, you are just as IGNORANT as he is. The people of this state who are intelligent need to make a stand ONCE AND FOR ALL against this kind of stereotypical thinking. We will never get out from under these sterotypes until we make a stand. I guarantee that if he made a racial slur he would be APOLOGIZING all over the place, because society would DEMAND it. As a society, we West Virginians should DEMAND a VERY PUBLIC apology. This is a disgrace, and Cheney should be very ashamed of himself.

There is some good news out of all this. Toyota's Hybred cars are selling like hot cakes. Now Toyota is opening a new plant to build their new line of cars only in West Virginia! 14,000 new jobs! West Virginia will be the home of the Toyota Inbred!!!!!

Posted by: Maudie on Jun 3, 2008 at 07:26 PM
Vice President Cheney should consider the feelings of the citizens of West Virginia. After all, he was elected to office by the very people he insulted. We may be rednecks and live daily with the sterotype of marrying our family members; however, when we go hunting for quail we are able to distinguish been a bird and a friend. Maybe the Vice President has vision problems that run deeper than a telescope could possibly help. Words cut to the bone and his words were like a two-edged sword. We should all remember Senator Byrds words and vote democrat in the coming election.

Here is a fact of life: You give people something to make fun of, they will make fun of it. This is the only area I have ever been in that is proud of how uneducated its populous is. It is really sad. Get over it. You brought it on yourselves.

People need to chill about the "West Virginia" we're all related joke. We have bigger problems on our hands that are more of a concern than who is dissing who. SERIOUSLY PEOPLE GET MORE UPSET OVER GAS PRICES AND MAYBE SOMETHING WOULD GET TAKEN CARE OF!

Posted by: Stephanie on Jun 3, 2008 at 07:09 PM
I hate to say this, but only people in Ohio actually understand that joke--and don't take it offensively. If it makes anyone feel better, my cousin is married to my husbands brother and now we are sister-in-laws. Same thing and there is nothing wrong with that. Don't worry West Virginia....we are not laughing at you we are laughing with you!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 3, 2008 at 07:08 PM
I would just like to know how people are getting that it was West Virginia that voted Cheney in, It takes more people than WV has in its whole state to vote someone in or else Hillary would be the Nominee for president right now instead of Cheney's kin Obama...(hmmm I think I see the family resemblance)

I was raised in WV but have lived in other states as an adult. By no means does this presumption belong to WV moreso than other states. True colors are showing, Mr. Cheney; and to think that WV helped vote you into office 2 terms.

Posted by: CJ on Jun 3, 2008 at 06:38 PM
Unfortunately, those who negatively react to the stereotypical comments do more to engrain them in the minds of outsiders than they do accentuate the positive character of the state's residents. Ethnic and stereotypical jokes have been and will continue to be spoken around the world. Did outsiders name an area of the State "Big Ugly Creek?" We should never lose our sense of humor! I chose to live in West Virginia thirty years ago and accept the negative humor for what it is: HUMOR!

Posted by: Kathy on Jun 3, 2008 at 06:36 PM
I am SO thankful that there are so many people in WV with a sense of humor. (I haven't read anyone's comments, so I may be being sarcastic here...lol) Thank God I got a good laugh out of it!! Yep, and I'm a die-hard born and bred West Virginian and if I can laugh at it, then shame on those of you who can't. And I bet ANYTHING that Manching, Byrd, and Capito all THREE laughed when they 1st heard it too!! But they'll never admit it in public.

Has Mr. Cheney done ANYTHING positive for America since he has been in office? It seems every time he is out on his own he generates comedy routines for the late nite vultures. I don't think he said anything at that meeting that he wasn't used to saying all the time in private. Mr. Cheney has been the brunt of many jokes and jabs at his intelligence. And, apparently, rightfully so. Only a moron would stand in front of The National Press Club and make those statements! I think Senator Bryd's statement, (which I KNOW he didn't compose himself), covers it. However, I believe Cheney is only one of many in his circle that USE the American people as a means to an end...to get elected. And even after he leaves office he will still be living on the, "spoils of war," so to speak. It has been MANY years since we have had descent government leaders and I don't see one in sight.

Posted by: Mike on Jun 3, 2008 at 06:25 PM
Senator Byrd is more of an embarrassment than that statement!

I sware, "big city" people would die from lack of laughter if it wasn't for us. At the end of the day, people can say what they want. They can keep thinking that stereotype. But i know West Virginia is full of hard working, friendly, patriotic people, and that's all that matters.

He and his so called President is why this country is in the shape it's in now.If he cares about his country so much then he wouldn't think this was funny, Jay Leno he's not.He owes this state an apology out of his own mouth but I,m sure we'll never get that because only stupidity comes out of it!Wonder why Mr. cheney did WV go democrat this year? How would you feel Mr. Cheney if West Virginians said something about your daughter being gay? THINK BEFORE YOU INSERT YOUR FOOT IN YOUR MOUTH NEXT TIME MR. But why should I expect any more out of him afterall, Bush did pick him. Bush has made several attempts at humor about the war, presidential candidates and etc. Is it funny that our families are dying for his greed? Furthermore, I don't want an apology if I have to ask for it and I certaily don't want it from the spokesperson. She didn't make the comment, she shouldn't be the one apologizing. I don't like Bush or Bush and I just hope that americans have learned from their mistakes when it comes time for brother in Fl. to run for president. Like father like sons.

Since WV, is "Open for Business" it should also allow itself to be open to being the brunt of one of the oldest jokes since the Union first formed. WV, brings this kind of attention upon itself-and by not being able to laugh at/with those who point to it's own verified history, it' seems to take on the semblance of being "above reproach", when in fact it's the truth of the matter that seems to be the sticky point. WV, BECAUSE of the way it attempts to market itself as being above all other states - is the reason why it is always being brought back to Earth...does the history of the KKK, moonshiners, recent national attention to violance to a black girl, over-whelming support of even a "woman" v's a "black" presidential candidate, a "kkk" senator, marketing of the Hatfields & McCoys as a visitor attraction, "Mothman" exists, people dying on 4x4s nearly every month, etc - where has your self rightous pride been for all these years? WV, IS a joke - either get over it or over-come it!

Mr. Cheney: In the words of Earl Pitts-"Wake up America!" or, keep paying $4 for a gal. of gas, losing jobs to foreigners, selling our lands to the rag heads, welcoming terrorists to come here and live a free and wealthy life in our friendly country with no borders, giving up your citizenship rights, allowing our schools to tell us how to raise our kids, continue receiving your 3% cost of living that are about 4% below the real annual increases, keep voting for circus clowns (like Cheney) to run our country to they can spend your hard-earned tax dollars to perform ketchup drip testing, sending $5 million toilets into space, and fighting global warming while protecting the polar bear from extinction. An author from another planet would have a best seller. What else would you expect from a Nebraska-born political science major from the Univ. of Wyoming with a mascot called Pistol Pete? Wonder what kind of "breeding" they do in the hills of Wyoming? Did I mention Cheney was a moron?

The comment from VP Cheney was extremly rude to the citizens of the state of WV. This wasn't a joke he even made the comment that he was not up for re-election. I think that Capito or Byrd should run statistic reports on other states to see who has the most incest citizens.. I am also proud that he does no t live in WV...but there will be a time in his life that he will have to go through this state and I hope that he breaks the law and a good officer is there to see it and issues him a citation at least WV will get some of his money.lol...that would be the only good thing to come out of that comment..im not sure what his home state is but he must have spent a lot of time in Kentucky and mistaked it to be WV....not that kentucky is a bad state because it isn't but i really get tired of comments and movies portraying WV citizens of being dirty, stupid, incest people..

It was a joke. The way I took it was that people marry their cousins everywhere, not just in WV. I guess the next thing we hear will be that this remark is what put Byrd in the hospital yesterday or that Cheney should have to take some kind of tolerance class. You know the people who took offense to this have made jokes about people from Kentucky, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, an others. They have also made racial or ethnic slurs. You also know that all the people who are criticizing Cheney for this have made WV jokes themselves. Some of the people who are "mad" over this remark are just using it as an opportunity to hate a republican.

Posted by: Hollie on Jun 3, 2008 at 03:45 PM
Seriously, his comment has nothing to do with whether or not he is a Repulican or a Democrat. If you don't think Democrats have said similar things about WV, you're not only deaf, you're kidding yourself, too. The comment was not funny, in the same way it was not funny when Barak Obama said his grandmother was a "typical white woman." Stereotypes just aren't humorous.

As a Kentuckian, I know all too well these stereotypes and to have someone in his position stoop to this level is completely inappropriate. I hope the good people of WV think about this next time they go vote. It's a great reason to vote Democrat!! I hope after January that we never have to see Cheney's big ugly head again. He should just go retire with all of his money he's making off of the people of the US.

IS CHENEY TRYING TO SABOTAGE MCCAIN OR WHAT? DOES HE THINK THAT WHAT HE SAYS AS THE REPUBLICAN VICE-PRESIDENT HAS NO AFFECT ON THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AS A WHOLE? HE SHOULD REMEMBER THAT OLD ADAGE ABOUT IT BEING BETTER TO REMAIN SILENT AND BE ASSUMED IGNORANT THAN TO SPEAK AND REMOVE ALL DOUBT. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY I FEEL SHOCKED BY HIS REMARK- THIS ADMINISTRATION HAS NEVER REPRESENTED ALL OF AMERICA JUST THOSE THAT FIT IN WITH THEIR ELITIST CLIQUE.MONEY, NOT INTELLIGENCE, NOT CONSIDERATION OF OTHERS, NOT INSIGHT, DEFINITELY NOT GOOD LEADERSHIP OR CLASS- JUST MONEY IS ALL THAT MATTERS TO THESE PEOPLE AND I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THEM GO. I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR CHENEY APOLOGIZE HIMSELF, NOT THROUGH A SPOKESPERSON, BUT WOULD THAT JUST BE "POLITICAL CORRECTNESS". I THINK WE ALL KNOW THE PERSON THAT HE IS INSIDE.

First of all, to D-Bo Ice, I bet your sister, cousin and wife are the same person. It could have been any southern state that he used. It was just a joke about being related to Obama. He probably has to joke his way out of that situation anyway. I would shutter if he was in my family tree. By the way, my ansectors are all from Virginia, so I guess where all of the inbreeding began.

Oh come on people! Don't let this "joker" upset you! THIS coming from ANYONE in this administration is nothing BUT a joke! THEY are a JOKE! This also comes from a guy whose "Commander Guy" (Bush's own words, not mine) can't put two intelligent words together to form a simple sentence without butchering the English language! AND from a man who shot his "friend" in the face while "hunting" from what? A few feet? Mistook him for a QUAIL? So folks, don't get your knickers in a wad over this stupid remark. It's yet another one out of the mouths of this STUPID inept "administration". Laugh it off. Laugh THEM off. They've been nothing BUT a huge joke. He's not worth the effort or worth getting your blood pressure up.

While some viewers indicated they thought the comment was funny, I find no humor in it. Cheney's communication director claims the comment was not meant to hurt ANYONE, but ignorance hurts EVERYONE. While Cheney may be considered to be well educated formally, this comment (and others like it) indicate that all education is not achieved in the classroom. Perhaps if he were to visit the people of West Virginia and this country who are responsible for electing him, he would not have considered making such a comment. However, he seems to have insulated himself with America's version of royalty - politicians, business executives, celebrities, etc. I would like to say I am disappointed, but can not because I have no expectations from him. Just for the record, lines of my family have lived in what is now West Virginia since the mid 1700's, and in researching my geneology I have found no cases of inappropriate marriages.

VP Cheney just showed his ignorance with his slam to WV people. How soon "they" forget who helped them get into office once they've gotten there. I think he should come to WV and personally appolgize on all local TV stations. His apology sent via a spokesperson is empty handed.

Posted by: Pablo on Jun 3, 2008 at 11:47 AM
Another reason why Bush and Cheney are the two Americans I hate most. In my 50 years of living I've never seen anybody like these two cowards for lying. It goes to show the state of our religious citizens that support these two thugs.

Posted by: MtnMama on Jun 3, 2008 at 11:11 AM
Sorry if this point has been brought up already... Yes - it was a joke - an obvious joke - we have all laughed at those jokes. But the point is, Appalachia, is the minority you can poke fun at. That is why I would be offended. It's not right to make little comments, even funny ones, about ANY minority. But why is it okay to do it toward WV? True, we don't take ourselves seriously enough to be offended -- but come on. Anyone else would be LIVID.

I don't find humor in making fun of others and their culture and their background. That is basically what cheney did. If he made another "joke" about african-american or asians people would not be calling it a "joke". So the same goes for the "joke" he made about WV and the people who live in it.

Posted by: Debi on Jun 3, 2008 at 10:53 AM
VP Chaney should have made the apology himself instead of someone speaking for him. I am NOT one of the West Virginians that voted for a president who picked him for a running mate.

Posted by: Pat on Jun 3, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Too sensitive? When everything you see and hear from the media is negative about you, yes, you become sensitive. When a vice-president also speaks negatively of you, you rankle. It shows his lack of compassion, insensitivity, bigotry, etc., for the people, and, look at his position. The so-called joking comment was totally out-of-line, and he, plus others, should first think before they speak, especially when it is in a demeaning, derogatory manner. Cliche: If you can't say anything good about someone, say nothing at all. It works.

Being a Republican from West Virginia I find myself defending the Bush Administration's actions on a daily basis. West Virginia is a predominantly Democratic state. Oftentimes I must argue with several people at the same time about political issues. This is why Mr. Cheney's comments are so hurtful. He is someone I have admired and supported. However, his decision to strengthen the stereotype many West Virginians are trying to avoid seems like a betrayal. I wonder if he would be laughing if someone said the same thing about his home state of Wyoming.

Posted by: Debbie on Jun 3, 2008 at 10:22 AM
It amazes me that NBC and MSNBC can state that WV is uneducated and poor working class, but when a Republican makes a joke, WV and the news media pounces on him. I watched the news during WV's primary, and the citizens of WV were the joke of NBC and MSNBC for days after the Primary; however, no one ever commented about those remarks.

Posted by: To teresa on Jun 3, 2008 at 10:20 AM

Well with remarks like that maybe we should see how he feels for us. Also how that train of thought would run in his family with (HIS COUSIN) so our GOV. should know witch way to use his political power to help our state. Well lets look at the situation THE BIG O did not even think WV was worth visiting . So if they both have that mind set our state and our world could be in more trouble than it is now.He is not up for re-election but his cousin is . Lets pray for for the UNITED STATES as a whole and pray that his family does not get into office.

To: god help the usa Um... You do know that republicans stand for free enterprise and capitalism and are the champions of both. Democrats are more of a welfare, everyone is equal party. So logically, isn't the democratic party closer to communism? I'm not republican or democrat, I just thought I would point that out. Also, I never understood why being called a "commie" was so bad anyway. Nor do I understand America's hate for communism. It's a wonderful idea, but a complete and utter failure in practice. Personally, I prefer a capitalist economy. I just never understood why people hated communism so much. Why not monarchy or dictatorship? Just a thought.

People if you don't like the stereotype, stop contributing to it! Encourage education to your children! Stop banning books just because they have a few swear words! Give your child a book, books teach a healthier way of expression (as opposed to video games and television). WV is in a sad shape and we have no one to blame but ourselves. If you don't like the way you are perceived then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!

I don't understand the shock and anger that statement has caused. This administration has taken America's dignity in the face of the entire world for years now and THIS statement outrages? Bush and Cheney have belittled the nation in every way possible without admitting to it so at least he actually said it out loud as opposed to trying to hide his true thoughts and intentions. It is a shame a VP would say something like that but to me it's typical of this admin's arrogance and disconcern for it's people.

Cheny's comments were that of a common joke (a tasteless joke, but a joke none the less). Obama's comments were unique and in regards to a huge portion of our Country including West Virginians. I personally am far more offended by Obama’s words than that of Cheny. I don’t agree with any political figure making such comments, but I think we have to put it in perspective.

I'm always amazed how we can laugh when we are watching Jessco White but then be made if someone from the "outside" makes fun of us for the same thing we find funny. Yes I voted for the guy and given a chance I would again. No he didn't turn his back on the people after we voted him in office Neither did President Bush. They did what they said they were going to do. They said we were going to fight terrorism and we have been. How quickly people have forgotten... Some of you are so light hearted with jokes about yourself from the Vice President of the United States. He gave no mind to your accaepting or rejecting his joke that he did not ask your forgiveness personally. He made it and he did not take it back. He sent his staff. He did not care if he damaged his fellow Republicans in the upcoming elections and pretty much said so. However West Virginian, if you can not see how he thumbed his nose- Cheney laughingly said you we were mentally challenged because our families had relations with each other. This man acted as if we had no mind to have values or morales. Mc Cain wants to stay on course of this man- we all know this man ran the White House and President Bush was his figure head. How could he joke in this matter when his daughter and her girlfriend became parents recently? He did not want Wolf on CNN to talk about his daughter so he should had been more sensitive? Be careful who you vote for without thinking panoramically.

I'm sure Capito has a few things she don't want made public! Get over it! I've lived in Ohio and Kentucky and have worked with people from all over the Tri-State and we've made fun and joked around about each others state for years. It's a joke people! I'm sure the W.V.s have made fun of Ohio & Kentucky and thought nothing about it, but let a politician open his or her mouth and it's a different story. I am a proud Kentuckian. We live with similar sterotypes as West Virginians. Though these stereotypes seem unavoidable in our culture, it is completely appalling that the VP of the United States would make such a ridiculous comment. But as another person commented here, you must consider the source. Another appalling comment made by Mr. Cheney just a few months ago speaks to what Governor Manchin said about West Virginians answering the "call to duty every time the president has needed their service." When Mr. Cheney was asked his thoughts on the thousands of soldiers who had lost their lives in the Iraqi war, he simply said that they volunteered. I'm sure these soldiers' families were really comforted by that remark. This is the administration we have had for seven and a half LONG years. Prayerfully, we will make the right decisions in our next presidential election.

This invites all the crooks of the world to come here looking for the same oppertunity! The facts are that Byrds PR people had to make his statement, because he don't know what state he's in most of the time. The real reason people across the country thinks WV voters are so stupid is because they keep electing Rockefeller, KKK Byrd and people like Manchin. Wv would really be almost heaven if we could get it cleaned up and take the trash out like Manchin and Rockefeller. Then the possibilities for our beautiful state would be unlimited, not like it is now 49th or 50th in anything respectable..

People should be used to these stereotypes by now. It will always be this way and nothing we can do will change it.

First of all I'm not from WV but an insult is an insult no matter where you're from. Mr. Cheney's comments were rude, hurtful and lack any concern for human feelings. This proves again what Bush and Cheney really feel and do...hurt the common people. They've shown this repeatedly through their "BIG" business and "BIG" oil deals...go watch your hard earned monies crank into your gas tank while the profits crank into their pockets! But look at how have they TRIED to help us - by making "jokes". Repeatedly we try to educate our students on how to respect and treat people. I teach students on a daily basis that it's a "joke" only if everyone involved thinks it's funny...I don't think this was funny & I seriously doubt if the good, hard-working people of WV do either. We try to teach that our words & deeds are for helping, not hurting & then to have someone that is a "leader" of our country to make such a hurtful remark. THANKS VICE PRESIDENT Cheney for HELPING us AGAIN!!!

It was a joke. Its no big deal. Maybe Al Sharpton can come in and we can sue and march through the streets. WV is back woodsy, that is our culture and that is why I like it. People visit WV to ride the rivers, atv and see the way people used to live when things were good.

Posted by: Joyce on Jun 3, 2008 at 07:40 AM
This is no surprise. Cheney and Bush have raped this country and as BIG OIL BARONS they are raking in a fortune from the high gas prices that we are having to pay! They care about no one but themselves and their pockets! To say something so disgraceful is appalling and very hurtful coming from a VP regardless whether he is running for re-election or not! The people of WV need to step back and take another look at who they vote and put in the White House. West Virgians voted for Bush-Cheney, how could they expect anything more! And, I don't see that an apology made anything better or made people say, "Oh, he is sorry, just making a joke".It's too late to close the gate after the cows got out! Wake up WV.....Don't think for one minute that McCain will be any different! He is plain and simple a BUSH SOLDIER, just an extention of Bush-Cheney. God help us and our country if he is elected!

I see no humor at all in that inconsiderate and unprofessional remark. I was born and raised in Ohio,I have family and friends who are from WV,I`ve visited WV several times, it`s very beautiful country and has beautiful people. That`s the problem with a lot of things in this country, many of us make light of things we should be concerned about!

Let them deal with their smog, and pollution that really does cause birth deffects, and I will enjoy OUR beautiful scenery and fresh air without bumping shoulders. People recycle the myth, Cheney is just doing us a favor. We do not want them here. I wish Detriot would think that about WV, but someone had to tell them it was not true, and now look what we have to deal with, another states trash.

It wasn't a joke. "Good" jokes have taste, don't need to be vulgar, and don't have to make fun of a group of people. The statement wasn't even close to being a joke. The statement was an insult. He even went on to acknowledge that it was derrogatory by saying he was able to make such comments since he wasn't seeking re-election. If it was a "joke", why couldn't he say if even if he WAS seeking re-election. A joke wouldn't hurt his or anyone else's re-election chances if it were just that ---- a joke. Jokes and humor make people laugh. If they are in good taste, the laughter is appropriate and healthy and makes everyone feel good. Disguising a bigoted and cruel remark as a joke is a coward's way of speaking his/her ill will "under cover" of being "humorous". The people in the audience that laughed are just as guilty as he in being bigots. It makes me sick that the people of WV ever elected this type of person to lead.

The people of this state are good Americans, and we are hurt to find that you have such prejudiced ideas about us. You should never have insulted our great state in this slanderous way! I expect a sincere apology from you immediately. You are truly misinformed about our state and its people. I have a decent job and it is hard to keep up with my little family, yet they set in there fortunes and smile. We need someone who cares about us and not there pocket books. Right now it scares me to think of the society that my child is going to grow up in becuase of people like the ones we have now over us. Bush and Chaney, I hope God forgives you for what you have done to us, you have failed to everyone. You have no heart, but your pockets are lined. Soon we will find another way to live off the land and you can keep your money. Our familys are more important. People will rebel against you and your ways of life and you will pay for what you are doing to us. Either now or in the after life. You make us all sad and embarassed. Something dumb like this has taken the focus off of the real issues in WV: the corrupt man sitting in the Governor's office. So what that Cheney made a joke? At least he didn't make a mockery out of the state's largest educational institution by putting his best buddy as President of WVU and having his daughter given a degree on a silver platter.

Please have an open mind with the next election. Don't vote for McCain just so Obama doesn't win. That is just a very ignorant way to think about the election. Race, religion, and funny sounding names don't mean anything. It is what they stand for, policies, and their message of hope and change that matters. Cheney wants McCain to win, and supports him just as Bush does. McCain will more than likely keep us where we are now, and from what I can tell nobody wants that for our country.

The inbreeding that has been so common in WV has it's good points. This practice has been common through time in Europe. Keep a strong bloodline as with the royal familys and kings of England. Haven't you been told to keep it in the family? What's wrong with kissing cousins and it saves gas by going courting in the same neighborhood. We don't produce very many Obamas this way either. Anyone is stupid that thinks Byrd made these comments and Manchin has no right to comment for us or any room to talk about anything, he is a disgrace to WV himself. The real reason politicans and people across the country thinks WV is so ignorant is They elect the biggest tryant republican in the world like Rockefeller just because he registered democrat to get votes. I'm proud to be an Appalachian and who we are, just look at the rest of the nation. Be proud of who we are and VOTE out trash Rockefeller and Byrd has long past his time too !

Posted by: Buckeye on Jun 2, 2008 at 11:59 PM
I guess this is what Bush meant when he said he would restore honor and dignity to the White House. Chaney's blatant arrogance is disgusting. His comment "You can say those things when you're not running for re-election" is more disturbing to me and reinforces the theme of McClellan's new book. The people of WV will have a great opportunity in November to change the perception of millions nationwide. West Virginians can also let the Republican Party know in November that insensitive jokes are inappropriate ways of showing gratitude to a state whose five electoral votes literally put them in office in 2000.

Posted by: Lee on Jun 2, 2008 at 11:57 PM
The Democrats think West Virginia and Kentucky are a bunch of uneducated, racist rednecks. The Republicans think West Virginia is full of inbreds and I am sure they would throw Kentucky in there with WV. I am from KY but I am really sick of people who know nothing about us putting down both states. But then again look at the source. This comment is from a man who lied to get us into a pointless war and then made himself rich off the lives of over 4,000 dead American troops. So maybe we should not care what this type of person thinks about us anyway.

Another politically incorrect statement about WV-this time by the VP of the United States. He has no hat manners either, because he did not remove his hat at the Air Force Academy graduation ceremony. There were probably ladies in the audience, and also out of respect to the new Air Force officers. His action reflects the usual uncaring attitude of the Bush administration.

I was born and raised in WV and can't understand being so "touchy" about a joking remark. Having done a lot of genealogy, I have learned that most of the jokes are based in fact. The same for most rural areas if you go back enough years. When we react the way most people do, it only fuels the jokesters!

I was born and raised in North Carolina, but I am a teacher in WV and have been for almost 20 years. I have never ran across any person who has been in an incestual relationship. It seems that the vice president of the United States would never ridicule anyone because of where they live. I am proud to live in WV. The people here are very loving and forgiving. Sometimes I fear too much. However, Chaney has reflected a mentality that has ruled our government for too long. I pray God will help our country and send us leaders that will go back to our roots and what we were founded on. We need to show love to one another instead of ridiculing things we know nothing about. I, for one, am sick of being the butt of people's jokes. They are not funny and we are not laughing. We will pray for Cheney and his ignorance.

I am a West Virginian by birth and I am appalled at the VP for speaking such ignorance to public. He should have more respect for the people who elected him. He is a rich elitist that carries no respect for anyone but himself and the companies who are lining his pockets. Many West Virginians are hard-working, blue collar individuals. This country was built on the backs of people like us, the common folk, and that position in society demands respect.

As a second term ends for the current administration we continue to see the ignorance they have shown for 7.5 years. I'm sure if our state was known for oil instead of coal his remarks would not have happened. West Virginia has sent excellent men and women into the military and into combat and deserves the greatest respect from those that send us there; you would think a "master of war" could show more respect for the men and women that have allowed a coward to "serve" in the highest office in the world. I feel Cheney should plan retirement out of the US, maybe France? Thank goodness for term limits!!! Maybe we can blame his ignorance on a small gene pool?!?!?

I am so proud to be a West Virginian and the remark made by Cheney was so ignorant on his part. At least the people in WV that carry guns and go hunting know what game they are to shoot at. Announcing he had Cheney's on both sides of his family should make him think twice before making a comment as he did. Does he know where Maryland is located in relation to where WV is located. He needs to wear a t-shirt saying " open mouth-insert foot," It sounds like someone of a lower intelligence to make such a remark for a laugh. I am also disappointed with the Natl. Press Club that found it so funny. My West Virgiana parents brought me up teaching me to never make fun of anyone. I think what he said was a disgrace. Cheney, what goes around comes around. Arrogant as you are and the pedestal you have yourself on, it may tumble in the blink of an eye.

How rude!! He needs 2B deported to Devil's Island, and never 2B heard from again. The VP of the USA should be someone of high standards that would never belittle someone or a group of people that he once asked for there trust in him [and our vote} to lead our great nation into the future. What a way to exit the Office of the VP. Good-bye. Neither you nor Coach Rod are welcome into our Great State of West Virginia.

He lives up to his first name on a daily basis. This makes my belly laughs at John Stewart's hilarious jabs at Cheney all that more enjoyable. Waah, Waah. The only time I was disappointed and ashamed to be a West Virginian is when our state sold out and voted for this lieing pair of elitist a*&holes.

I LIVE IN WV... Well what's he supposed to think about WV? Almost every time something major happens here and the news comes for an interview it seems they always find the ugliest, badly dressed, toothless, doesn't comb hair with dark roots, brassy split ends and bug eyes that cross to do an interview. They show the nasty hollers and trailers on blocks with toilet planters in the front yard. It's no wonder people think of WV the way they do. The ones I see on national TV always look like this, they look like they married their brothers and sisters... Thanks a lot!!

Posted by: INBRED on Jun 2, 2008 at 08:44 PM
get over it. i embrace my inbred, hillbilly background. it actually gives you a leg up on the competition. when they expect that they are dealing with an idiot they dont have their guards up and you can blindside them. lets face it..... in our areas we have snake handlers, meth heads, scrap metal thiefs who get electrocuted.... and people who re-elect robert byrd. your own elected congressmen and senators have just as much contempt for you as cheney does. rockefellers ancestors raped an pillaged your land and abused your own people for money and you have continued to re-elect him.

Posted by: Jimmy on Jun 2, 2008 at 08:40 PM
He was trying to be funny. What's really funny is the only thing he will be remembered for as Vice President is shooting a friend of his while hunting. Keep up the good work Mr. Cheney!

Mr. Cheney needs prayer. Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. HE may not need re-electing, but what about his family if they ever run for office. I am disturbed at this comment. Like Forrest Gump says, Stupid is as Stupid does!

Posted by: reader on Jun 2, 2008 at 08:05 PM
I hope everyone here in West Virginia are proud of their Vice President. YOU elected him. I am proud to say, I did not waste my vote on him. If West Virginians had went democratic the last election, we would not be in the mess we are in today.

Posted by: Ann on Jun 2, 2008 at 07:54 PM
What more could this state, or country for that matter, expect from such a cold, arrogant individual? I'm proud to say I am a West Virginian who didn't vote for the Bush/Cheney ticket either election. This ignorant comment by Cheney, joking or not, should make all those WV residents who did feel just grand!

Posted by: Sue on Jun 2, 2008 at 07:50 PM
This is just another reason why I am glad I just changed parties after being a Republican for 27 years. The Republican party is out of touch with reality. At least he is one person we are all NOT related to or wouldn't admit it if we were!

I DID NOT VOTE FOR BUSH/CHENEY nor did anyone in my family...oh and we are not all married to each other...and I have a college education...I don't hunt but I could still shoot straighter than Cheney!! I will be glad to see the back side of him and bush!! WV Born and Bred and proud of it. Don't give our state elected officials for responding to such a derogatory comment from from the mouth of a back end of a horse.

What happened to Cheney being asleep, now that he is close to the end, he is going to show himself. He has done less than any other VP, oh, except collect his money from the gas pumps. You forget that it was Obama that said that WViginian's, cling to their religion or guns in hard times. It is hard to get past the sterotypes when our colleges are even corrupt. Maybe we should be looking at those in our local/state government. We have the oldest senator, he has to be given a written account of everything he needs to say. Time to start cleaning house at home and then at the federal level. You want a joke look at our leadership. Read Newsweek on McCain, who stated that he knows nothing about finances or business and had to get Ex-CEO of Hp to help. Do we really need him running the country? People think hard in the next election. Of course, if you don't vote, you have no right to complain about it. It takes everyone to change our image, so we need to work together.

Posted by: anon on Jun 2, 2008 at 07:42 PM
I find Mr. Cheney's comment funny and the way he made the joke makes hime more a likable guy. I was not offended. At the same time, I am also proud that I have Governer that sticks up for us.

Posted by: Chris on Jun 2, 2008 at 07:34 PM
As a former WV resident, and a FORMER Bush/Cheney supporter, I cherish my former state and am happy my children still get to call it home. Mr Cheney just shows his ignorance and his arrogance. I have met Mr Cheney and I have met thousands of West Virginians. I have never met a WV resident that shot his friend while hunting or collected millions of the deaths of fellow soldiers. Shame on this disgrace of a elected official.

Posted by: MP on Jun 2, 2008 at 07:27 PM
When I heard the comment from the VP I knew it was said as a joke, but he is an outsider and it was not funny. There are people in this country that does not even know that West Virginia is a state. For a man of his position I expect more, and I do expect an apology. I was born, raised and educated in West Virgina and it breaks my heart to hear outsiders say such things. I have traveled from coast to coast and border to border but West Virginia is the best by far.

Posted by: cindy on Jun 2, 2008 at 07:18 PM
This is what the "Bush supporters" in WV deserve, his administration has killed our children in a war for family oil, he has killed the US economy, and he is the poorest excuse of a president we have ever had... Come WV wake up and vote for a democrat this time.

Posted by: Mike on Jun 2, 2008 at 07:17 PM
I agree with Thomas. I did make the mistake of a vote for Bush/Cheaney. But, come November I will vote for a dog or whoever is running against the republicans. I now see what they have done. Sorry; my bad.

Posted by: Karen on Jun 2, 2008 at 07:15 PM
West Virginia.....get your panties out of a wad....it was a JOKE! I'm not saying that what Cheney said was PC and no, that does not describe WV BUT how many people do you hear joke around about themselves and their state? I don't know how many times when I have asked someone where they live they give the response "OutWayne". They don't specify any place other than that. Everyone needs to lighten up a little. There will be plenty of time for griping when the next pres. election occurs. Look at how it's going already. I'm glad to see that someone out there still has a sense of humor.

Our Vice President isn't setting a good example for our youth by beging so disrepectful. What do we gain when we make fun of someone or someones home. But to look small.

Posted by: Jennifer on Jun 2, 2008 at 07:04 PM
Dick Cheney's remarks about WV were uncalled for just because he has Cheneys on both sides of his family. Maybe all of his family is inbred and it has nothing to do with West Virginia. Shame on him.

Posted by: Joanne on Jun 2, 2008 at 07:02 PM
I'm not from West Virginia. However, I find Cheney's comment just as insulting because of his position as second in command of our country. Then he proceeded to blatantly tell everyone in America that he didn't care what he said because he's not seeking re-election. That in itself screams of his lack of true respect for his position as VP, and of the everyday Americans that put him in office. These comments sure do give McClellan's claims creedance. I am so taken aback by his comments that I actually wrote him at the white house to express my displeasure. Of course what does he care? He's not seeking re-election. What a true disgrace. Puts an entirely different spin on the shooting of his campaign supporter and friend, Harry Whittington. I guess he didn't need him anymore either since he wasn't seeking re-election.lol

Posted by: Rick on Jun 2, 2008 at 07:01 PM
Ok...we have a heck of a choice....a man representing a party that makes fun of us, or a man who completely ignored the state until called on the carpet for it. Face it, West Virginia is boned either way.

Posted by: Amy on Jun 2, 2008 at 06:47 PM
I would like to make three points: #1 Let's all quit making such a big deal of what someone "says." Attn: News Media --Make your stories about actual happenings and events that occur, not "words." It's always appeared to me as though the local media struggles for news-worthy stories, anyway, and at times, they want to have their own local version of what's making news in our country; this is a perfect example. #2 I'm sure if Cheney were a democrat, his remarks would've been blown off by the democratic Governor Manchin. And finally, #3 It wouldn't be so funny if it weren't so true! My husband and I both are originally from West Virginia, and guess what -- we're third cousins, once removed! Our two sons have the last name of "Clay" on both sides of their family.

Posted by: LIbby on Jun 2, 2008 at 06:47 PM
Wouldn't it be interesting if "Mr" Cheney, required emergency medical care and the only Doctor available was a West Virginian that had graduated from WVU. Wouldn't it be interesting if that Doctor let "Mr" Cheney know how much he appreciated Cheney's sense of humor and hope the admiration was shared.

I think they should worry about the kids in WV that are in need of help with their education. Give the man a break, it was a joke. Worry about what our state really needs help with and spend some time addressing that!

I would like for Mr. Cheney to know that WV people are some of the most highly intelligent people in the United States. Due to this intelligence, we would not even consider voting for him for dog catcher if he were to run. We see through his ignorance and stupidity since he is the one with the metamorphosis going on. Mr. Cheney just come to WV, you don't have to go hunting just stop in one of the local establishments and see what people think of you now.

Posted by: George on Jun 2, 2008 at 06:30 PM
It's obvious that Mr. Cheney isn't from W.Va. Most West Virginians would never make that sort of ignorant comment. West Virginians are honest (unlike Cheney with Haliburton) and hardworking people. By the way, Mr. Cheney, would you like to go hunting?

I think Cheney's remarks shows what a poor excuse for a Vice President he is. There should be something we can do to rectify his making these remarks. I lost a brother in Viet Nam and it apparently was o.k. for him to die at age 25. He was a native West Virginian and proud to be military. It really hurts to see someone like Cheney running us down.

Posted by: ME on Jun 2, 2008 at 06:28 PM
I'm not from WV, but have family that live there. No Cheney shouldn't have said anything that stupid, but do places like Hillbilly Hotdogs, really do anything but help enforce the stereotype?

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 2, 2008 at 06:28 PM
That's the problem with the world, no one has a sense of humor anymore. Lighten up people it was just a joke. No more than a racist joke, religious joke, or even a political joke. Laugh every now and then. No wonder people are killing one another, no room for a laugh or just being plain silly. Remember the saying, "sticks and stones". Don't take it to heart, it was just a joke.

Posted by: Bobbie on Jun 2, 2008 at 06:23 PM
People should check out www.usatoday.com Everytime there's a story about Obama, they post comments about Ky & WV people, being stupid, not educated & inbreds. Seems these posters think they can call us names, when we bring up something about why we do not like Obama's politics. If you are not for Obama, they call you a racist, and now if from Ky or WV, we are lowest species on earth!

Posted by: HERDFAN on Jun 2, 2008 at 06:22 PM
I would not accept an apology from this man if i had to. I am tired of being referred to as uneducated just because I am a West Virginian. Or perhaps the Republican political machine thinks that if they continue to make jokes at the expense of us no one will notice that they are not addressing the real issues bothering our nation. I think Bush/Cheney should stop cracking jokes and do something about the gas prices. Oh, but that would cut into their bottom line, wouldn't it?

Maybe we should remind VP Cheney that many from WV hunt every single year and the overwhelming majority do so safely without shooting others in their hunting party. Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. I agree with the state officials who have defended WV however I do not believe we should hold an entire party responsible for the ignorance of ONE elected official as Sen. Byrd suggested. What's the deal with making fun of us? Just because our state isn't rich like all the other ones doesn't give Mr. Chaney the right to say that about us. We haven't done anything to a make fun of him, and our state even helped him and President Bush into the White House. He should give us an apology, but even then he would probably have someone else to write it for him; so he won't truly be sorry.

This makes me want to cry that we are looked upon this way. I consider our state one of the finest in the nation, we are good caring, kind citizens but yet we are all considered incest. This is very hurtful coming from someone in such a powerful position. I love my state and Mr. Vice President I hope you take the wrong turn in our state one day and I hope you break down so maybe then you can see just what kind of wonderful people we have in our state. Sad part is not a one of us would leave you stranded because we do care about others here and their well being unlike the likes of you who have no respect for individuals or their feelings. I hope our Governor see's to it that you have to make a public apology to the citizens of West Virginia. Only bad part about it is....no one will believe you mean it now. I will pray for you and for your family Mr. Vice President. Shame on you for saying such a terrible thing about us. Thank you Governor for standing up for West Virginia.

I wish he would of said it when they were running for re-election. What does it matter? The majority of West Virginians would have still voted for these jerks.

Big deal. It's a generic joke [insert location of choice] and unfortunately more true here than some states. Instead of whining we should improve our education, behavior, and economic situation and maybe we could move ahead of Arkansas, Miss., etc.

Governor, you can be patriotic and serve your country even if you and your wife are siblings. Sometimes the truth hurts. Now I know that my location says Ohio, but my family is all from WV. I know people who are with their cousins and even one couple who are siblings. Alot of my grandfathers family are married to my grandmothers family which is by no means incestual but it sure gets complicated to explain how my cousin is also my uncle. If West Virginians are going to pracice this way of life then plan on being made fun.

What an idiot. Aren't you proud you helped elect him WV??

All of you West Virginians will be upset about this as I would I be, but you will still vote for McCain in November, just because you don't want to vote for Obama. Cheney is a major contributor to Senator McCain's campaign.

Get over yourself Governor. One may need to track some roots in Marion County to see what lies in your "gene pool." BTW Gov, more pressing issues for you to be dealing with. How about starting with finding a hobby and staying out of WVU matters!

just goes to show that elected polticians don't care about the American people until they need our vote. vote all politicians out and get new blood in.

IT IS A SHAME THAT PEOPLE IN "HIGH" PLACES CONTINUE TO TAKE POT SHOTS AT WV. CHENEY, OF ALL PEOPLE, SHOULD BE "GUN SHY" DUE TO THE FACT THAT HE IS A LOOSE CANNON WITH A FIRE ARM! COME TO WV AND SAY THE SAME THING WHILE HUNTING WITH OUR WV HUNTERS AND SEE WHO CAN SHOOT AND WHO CAN'T!

THAT STATEMENT SHOWS THE TRUE COLORS OF POLITICIANS. THEY'LL SAY WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR WHEN THEY NEED ELECTED, BUT WHEN THE CURTAIN DRAWS TO A CLOSE, IT IS THEN THAT THE TRUE MIND SET AND POOR THOUGHT PATTERN EXPOSES ITSELF. AND THE GOVERNMENT WONDERS WHY THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE NO TRUST.

Same old Cheney. Well, West Virignia, you elected this man, so you can't complain, can you?
