HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Presumptive Republican Presidential Nominee John McCain spoke with the Marshall University Thundering Herd football team at practice Wednesday morning.

Senator McCain spoke with the players at practice for a short period of time.

WSAZ's Randy Yohe and Grover Tadlock were inside the stadium.

McCain called a series of plays with head coach Mark Snyder. (The team scored a touchdown on the play, by the way.) Wearing a green Marshall baseball cap, McCain huddled with the team, recognized its history of tragedy and triumph and told a story about his prisoner of war days and respect for the American flag. He spoke one-on-one with several players. The event took about a half hour of Marshall's practice.

Marshall University President Dr. Stephen Kopp and Coach Snyder escorted McCain to the stadium.

Coach Snyder said if McCain can run the country like he ran the football plays, he's going to be OK. Snyder said it's always a thrill to have a national hero address the young men.

Senator McCain also visited and toured Merillat Industries, a kitchen cabinet maker in Jackson, Ohio. He met with workers, signed autographs and took pictures. He also spoke at the event.

According to a release from the McCain campaign, Merillat has eight plants in different states with more than 5,000 employees nationwide. The Jackson plant has 246 employees. The McCain release says Merillat has had a tough time economically with the recent housing issues across the country. The company has also worked on making its facilities more energy efficient.

McCain also had plans to visit Chillicothe and Columbus in Ohio Wednesday.

Beth, you are hilarious!I am not sure Walmart would hire him.Too many senior moments during the interview.I have seen McCain get confused too many times. His mind is not sharp enough to be President.

first, when maccain came to eatern ky his big plan to help us was with high speed inter net. wow high speed inter net, Id much rather have new jobs here. second, hey anonymous its the republicans who have let same sex marrage go on an approved abortion. The republican hasnt done anything usefull for this country in 8 years so why would anybody show thier ignorance by viteing for another one.

I want to express one thing to everyone. I have noticed that people has said that Democrats are for guns, same sex marriage, abortion, etc.) Let me tell you one thing about it. NO ONE HOLDS A GUN TO YOUR HEAD AND TELLS YOU TO HAVE A ABORTION--IT IS YOUR OPTION AND IF THAT IS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, THEN YOU WILL ANSWER FOR IT, NOT ME. I am so sick of people throwing up that the Democrats are for this and for that, who cares. The republicans are for CAPITAL PUNISHMENT---(HEY, THAT IS STILL KILLING SOMEONE) I don't care if someone does murder someone else, the bible clearly says that REVENGE WILL BE HIS IN THE LAST DAYS AND ONE OF THE COMMANDMENTS IS DO NOT KILL. So, to me, Republicans is the same as Democrats.

TO CRAZY, I HAVE YOU TO KNOW THAT I AM GOING TO COLLEGE AS WE SPEAK AND I DO KNOW SOME ABOUT POLITICS TO KNOW THAT THEY ARE ALL DIRTY BUNCH OF NO GOOD FOR NOTHING BUT I DO HAVE ENOUGH SINCE TO KNOW HOW OUR COUNTRY HAS BEEN LED FOR THE PAST 8 YEARS AND I DO KNOW IF ANOTHER REPUBLICAN GETS IN OFFICE, WE ARE IN TROUBLE. NOT TO SAY THAT OBAMA WILL BE MUCH BETTER, BUT I WILL TAKE MY CHANCES. I AM NOT BLAMING NO ONE, I AM JUST SICK OF GEORGE BUSH AND I SURELY DON'T WANT ANOTHER ONE IN THERE JUST LIKE HIM. EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES KNOWS THAT WE HAD NO BUSINESS GOING TO WAR. I SAID IT ONCE AND I WILL CONTINUE TO SAY IT. I WILL TELL ALL YOU WAR SUPPORTERS OUT THERE ONE THING, IF YOU SUPPORT THE WAR, THEN SEND YOUR OWN CHILDREN OVER THERE AND LET THEM TAKE A CHANCE ON THEIR LIFE BECAUSE I ALMOST POSITIVE THAT ABOUT 3/4 OF THE SOLIDERS WOULD RATHER BE HOME WITH THEIR FAMILIES. GEORGE BUSH SHOULD SEND HIS DAUGHTERS OVER THERE AND SEE HOW THEY LIKE IT. THANKS!!!!!!!!

I saw John McCain in person.I could not help but noticed how old and frail he looked. It will be interesting to see who is his V.P. choice.I also read that McCain does not use the internet.Really? I mean do we really want a President who can not surf the net?Speaking of surfing the net,I have been noticing a lot of talk about a movie called Zeitgeist.I went to Zeitgeist.com and watched it and was fascinated.I also was able to find it on you tube.Has anyone seen this movie?

I won't vote for McBama . As a gun owner and a member of GOA that's Guns Owners of America I cannot support either of these fellas. I will vote for Bob Barr. You might say that's a waste of a vote but I see voting for the other 2 as a waste. They are one in the same.

A few things: Social Security does not go to the poor, one does not go "on starvation" (like one goes "on" a diet), food prices are rising as a direct result of higher energy prices. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is a LIBERAL idea to increase the cost of energy in order to increase the demand for alternative energy. Bill Clinton NEVER got the US out of debt (that simply isn't possible, study some econ), his administration balanced the budget, there is a HUGE difference. The US still has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the developed world. I'm glad your base your vote on a candidate's speech, God forbid that you look at their history and platforms! Furthermore, everything you typed is media rhetoric. Please try thinking for yourself for a moment (and attending an English class). Lord help us if this person represents the intellegence of Obama supporters!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 7, 2008 at 01:49 PM
Can't we all just get along.. lol... You can argue all you want, but this world will never turn for the better until we as a nation put God first and clean up our act.. Now I dont really see that in either of these candidates and we only seem to be going downhill as a nation. So all we can do is hope and pray that God's will be done. God bless!

To Get a Life....you do not seem to be really knowledgable about politics. I commmend certain things you said...while I condone many other things you said. First of all, Obama talks about change...but he cannot tell you how he is going to do it. If you listen closely to his sentences, they do not ever finish. He has goals...but no plans...and if you ask me, it would be terrifying to be in a situation with a terrorist attack on the US..like 9/11..with Obama in office. Who wants a "sissy" for commander in chief?? And that is being kind giving him that name....He is horrible and clueless...and it will just be the end of the US as we know it. What is happening right now to our economy is going to turn around and be okay. People were given loans for houses and cars with such high rates..and variable rates...and to people who have horrible credit ratings. Credit cards and people being overextended..is what has happened. Quit blaming and go to college.

You Obama supporters are probably right. I mean, qualification in the form of experience is highly overated. 142 days in the Senate are MORE than enough time for Obama to get a firm grip on how to run this country. And when he gets in, I'll have health care(don't know how the country's gonna pay for it, but I'll have mine and that's all that matters.) The war will finally be over(We should have never gone to Europe in WWII either. Let other people deal with their own problems. Until they're in the U.S., it just costs me money) The economy will flourish (Once more, is he for or against NAFTA?) Yes sir, thee will be a hybrid car in every garage and a chicken in every pot and we'll ALL live the good life. And if Obama needs help, then his VP Santa Claus and Sec of State E.Bunny can just sprinkle a little magic dust and make the rest of the problems go away. I'm excited- how bout you?

They (WV) will indeed stop thinking in the "democrat-Republican" mindset IF the news media, or their grandpappy tells them too, but not until. Half of the state's "Democrats" don't even know what the party stands for (abortion, gun control, bigger Gov't, same-sex marraige, etc.). They are "democrats" only because 1.Grandpappy was, 2. The Union told them they had to be, or 3. They bought the line "The Dems are for the workin man (Which is the biggest lie of all) This is why WV is in the condition it is: High poverty levles, high welfare levels, and young people leaving in droves. If the Dems are for the working man, then why do they take so many of your dollars and give them to someone who won't work? And to Chris: Quit spouting word for word the Dem rhetoric, and on the Dem vs. Rep. coward issue-Site your source. You made the claim, now tell us where you got the info.-unless your coward.

Hey to all of you MCCAIN SUPPORTERS....If Mccain gets in office, you might just not have Social Security for the poor, you might just be on starvation, gas prices, food prices are going to keep on rising. I am not fond of either one of them, but I will take my chances at Obama. At least he might make a change. We have had a republican in office for the past 8 years and look how everything is gone down hill. I seen where one comment was talking about Bill Clinton. Hey, Bill Clinton got the United States out of DEBT, that is more than I can say about George Bush. He has ran us more and more in debt. I don't care about Democrat or Republican, I just want change and right now I am scared for everyone. Jobs doesn't look good, everything you make goes in gas and groceries. No wonder the economy is gone down hill. When you do get a payday, it all goes on groceries, gas and regular bills. When I hear Obama speak, he sounds SMART!!!!!!!!!I BELIEVE HE WILL BE GOOD FOR THIS NATION!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 7, 2008 at 12:02 AM
whats up people. every one i talked to before the war said the same thing. kill iraq i do mean everyone. i didn't even see one say different. now its bad cause gas went up. our bad bush that we voted into office twice. come on. i rather have a war hero in office instead of one that might be racial.

Vicky stop blaming the media. If the media didn't have such a large audience that tolerates their nonsense, they would change their style of coverage. We (as a society) are the fools, not the media. They only give us what we want. I don't give our current society too much credit for being politically sharp; we re-elected W.

Hey kd, why don't you check the number of republican congressmen that have served with the number of democratic congressmen that have served and then tell me who the cowards are.

I always ask a soldier when I see one how do you feel about the war? They have all answered I support it! The news media blows it all out of proportion. Dems are cowards and republicans are ready to serve. I support my troops and my troops support Mccain

McCain might be old but he is our only hope. Obama is the ultimate terrorist attack...if he gets in as our president, the US is finished! He has no clue...no experience....has never done anything...At least McCain has some sense about him. Republican or Democrat...he is the ONLY choice. Obama is totally and completely frightening! It was nice to see McCain come to Huntington! And he picked our much loved thundering herd to visit! WE ARE MARSHALL!!

I am a old hippie, but I never spit on any US Soldier, no matter what my opinion is of our lousy government and its war. It is people like Joe on Aug 6, 2008 at 12:18 PM who stereotype causing problems in the world. - Everywhere I see people protesting the war... it is the people who support the war doing all the spitting on them!. Don't believe me?.. Check YouTube. - The REAL story is -people who SUPPORTED the war were the people trying to infiltrate the peaceful protesters, and did all the spitting and throwing of insults, trying to disrupt the peace process. A classic tactic. No peace loving hippie EVER spit on any US Soldier, only the war-mongers trying to cause a disruption.

Don't get me wrong - I respect McCain. However, his torture was the result of a war created by politicians for their own selfish political reasons - Vietnam was NOT a war fought for our freedoms. Much like another war going on right now....

Vicky, Edwards is a lawyer and Romney is Mormon, how does that make them more qualified or less diverse. Mormons believe the Book of Mormon is more correct than the Bible and that God used to be a man on another planet. They also believe in many gods.

When asked about the air-pressure issue during an appearance Tuesday night, McCain said: "I agree with the American Automobile Association. We should all inflate our tires." Obama had noted that keeping tires inflated and cars tuned was endorsed by both NASCAR and AAA and should be part of any comprehensive plan to reduce reliance on imported oil.

I was proud to know that McCain took enough time out to visit us,I hate the protesters that had to greet him,its so frustrating to see them out there.my Son served over in Iraq and it saddens him to see them too.I think they just protest so they can be on the news, because to hear them talk they don't have a clue whats going on over there and they have proved they don't care about the soldiers thats fighting over there.I feel like if the media would not put them on TV they would hopefully STAY HOME!!!!!

I'm a West Virginian mobilized Navy Reserve member currently serving on active duty and a BIG Herd fan. I see McCain showing some good sense in visiting the Marshall football team over the other team in Morgantown. If he continues to show this good sense and judgement in other areas he will make a great president!

The media has made this years election a complete circus!!!! Think about it!!! There were more qualified nominees....John Edwards and Mitt Romney are the two who we should be considering right now! Those stories wouldn't sell though, would they? Instead it was more interesting to have an african man and a white female for the Democratic running; and a replica of Bush (and I'm just talking about the physcial features) for the Republican. Now these are the stories people stay tuned to! We are being made fools of by the media!!! Just like before in 04!!

Posted by: John on Aug 6, 2008 at 09:36 AM
Could be because he voted AGAINST veteran's bill a few months ago that was to increase their benifits,,because he said,"it would make alot more want to retire"and he and Bush couldn't allow that. And talk about morals,he sure proved himself by ditching his 1st wife because she was crippled up from accident and was no longer the beauty queen he married, sure took a lot of hush money to keep a lid on that.Ever see his kids with him?

I can see you know nothing of political strategy... Please note Obama's race, he is African American. So is the majority of the football team. What is this town? A football town. To me, this makes perfect sense as a political strategy. You are kidding yourself if you think this election is about change or anything other than a popularity contest.

McCain is awesome. He might be old, but he's got experience. Obama is too whacked. If McCain's more of the same, why was he and Bush against each other in 00? Obama is so far off the hook, he wants us to put air in our tires. What's that mean? I make 300 a week, and it costs me 100 to get to work and back. That equals PBJ's for lunch. Obama don't want to do nothing about energy. Drill offshore, drill!!!!

I'm sure Obama would've thought about making a few more stops in West Virginia if the numbers in the spring weren't so ridiculous. Now, the folks on the right should just be thankful that their guy is even showing up here. If McCain doesn't do something completely stupid, he will easily carry West Virginia in the fall. Like it or not folks, we are a red state. Almost as red as they come nowadays.

Posted by: mom on Aug 5, 2008 at 10:53 PM
Wish you dumb folks would quit thinking Democrat or Republican. Are you really stupid enough to vote for Obama? I'm not crazy over McCain either but he beats the other choice. If these are the best the USA has to offer we're in big trouble. Glad he's taking the time to visit our area even if it is just to see a football team. My brother was in Viet Nam. Other brother Air Force Secret Service. Most of my family are service people. We don't take sneers lightly. You folks are sure funny. I think it would be wise for John McCain not to let people get a close look at how old he is ,it might harm his chances to be elected .He also ought to keep quite about his time as a prisoner , people question his mental status after being held so long in a vietnam prison camp . I wonder if he has issues with all those things he went through over there .But like he said all his relatives either fought or died in wars kinda like capt dan's caracter in forest gump .well if he gets in maybe he can help the veterans .

Posted by: Sally Mae on Aug 5, 2008 at 04:14 PM
It does not make much sense for McCain to attend a football practice of young men who probably have little interest in his presence or agenda. This visit makes no sense and will not help his presidency. What's next, visiting Rich Rod at Michigan!
