Update from 6 p.m. Tuesday newscast

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin and Republican challenger Russ Weeks faced off Monday night to talk about the most important issues facing West Virginians.

But they also found time for some mud slinging. We took a closer look at some of those biting accusations and other claims made by the candidates to separate facts from fiction.

Weeks said he would not have anyone in his administration that shares his last name, making a reference to Manchin whose wife and son serve on state boards in unpaid positions, as well to the governor's cousin Mark Manchin. He earns more than $100,000 as head of the School Building Authority.

"These are all qualifying people," Manchin said. "The bottom line is that they have to perform."

Throughout the debate, Weeks put Manchin on the defensive.

"The money going out in good ol' boy contracts is ridiculous," Weeks said, making claims that a worker with the Department of Highways is using his position to benefit his private company.

We checked into that, and a DOH spokesperson denied it but said the department will investigate.

One of the few issues that the candidates seemed to find agreement during the debate was reducing the $9,000 cap on permits for video lottery in the state. Manchin pointed out the decline of those permits during his administration.

"When i became governor, all 9,000 were out," he said. "As they are coming back now for whatever reason, we're not putting them back out."

But the West Virginia Lottery said one of the main reasons behind that move is an approaching date -- 2011, the year the Legislature could decide to reduce the permits issued.

During the debate, the moderator pressed Weeks for proof of the accusations about the DOH. Manchin also asked for names, and Weeks refused to provide any. On Tuesday, he stood by that stance but promised to take care of the problem as governor.

The candidates will have three more chances to make their case to voters. Monday's debate was the first of four scheduled debates.

Original story

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The race for the governor's office in West Virginia became heated Monday night when two of the candidates faced off for the first time in a live debate.

Democratic Gov. Joe Manchin is considered the heavy favorite, with his Republican challenger Russ Weeks facing an uphill battle with less money and less name recognition.

The two candidates made it clear Monday night that there is not much they agree on. And during the debate, Weeks threw in a curve ball -- making a very serious allegation that he says he's willing to back up with facts, but not until Election Day.

And that wasn't the only controversial issue during the debate. The two candidates also talked about the degree scandal surrounding Manchin's daughter, which has been a centerpiece of Weeks' campaign.

On the serious state of the economy, Manchin touted the state's ranking as one of the top states for growth during this financial crisis. Weeks, however, said the state food, business franchise and inventory taxes need to be cut faster, although he didn't lay out a timeline.

One issue the two candidates did see eye-to-eye on was merit pay for teachers -- both Manchin and Weeks said they're against the idea.

There are three more debates planned, with the remaining ones set in various parts of the state.

ONE PAY INCREASE IN FOUR YEARS. JOE HAS GOT TO GO. HE ONLY TAKES CARE OF HIS FAMILY AND BUDDIES. AFTER I PAID MY RENT AND UTILITIES AND PUT GAS IN THE CAR SO I COULD GO TO WORK, I HAD $17 TO BUY GROCERIES FOR TWO WEEKS. STATE WORKERS ARE HURTING AND HE DOES NOT CARE.

Are you a 'Democrat'? The reason I ask is that the post you made is written by a conservative, not a liberal. I agree with your assessment. However, part of the problem with this state is that many of the 'Democrats' in the state are really conservatives. However, because of unions and tradition, they have registered as Democrat, making this state a democratic run state. It's been that way for YEARS. The only republicans(conservatives) who can make it into office are those with ties to big coal. The problem with this is that the Democratic Party, by nature, believe in big government(because government can Always fix ANY problem, high taxes, and hand-outs(welfare and the like). The irony is that the most productive part of the population have conservative values and disagree with all three, but continue to vote Democrat because the union says so, or because "Grandpa was, Dad was, and By Gosh, it's good enough for me!"

OK "ANON" (why not use your real name to yell at us "uneducated, judgemental" people on here BTW, since YOU think YOU'RE so EDUCATED, you need to learn how to spell since you misspelled restaurant and blame. Normally I dont point out spelling mistakes because usually they're made by folks who are polite, nice & friendly on here However, since you chose to call the rest of us "uneducated and judgemental" I couldn't resist calling you on it to prove you're as "uneducated" as the rest of us. NONE of us here claim to be perfect other than you since you consider yourself to be superior to us as well as smarter than us. Not ALL of us get unearned degrees either like some! Also, what are you being if not judgemental when calling the rest of us that as well as "uneducated"? Come on. Our point here is that we want to SEE the actual #, type & WHERE all these thousands of jobs are that Manchin claims he created. AND we want to know the truth about the unemployment nos.

AS A WVU ALUMNI AND A BIG MANCHIN FAN, I WAS SO PROUD OF JOE AND THE WAY HE STOOD BEHIND US MOUNTAINEERS LAST YEAR, HE ALSO DID AN EXCELLENT JOB WITH THE SAGA DISASTOR. THE LAST YEAR JOE HAS TICKED ME OFF SO MUCH IM ON THE FENCE RIGHT NOW FIRST I BELIEVE IN DOING THE RIGHT THING NO MATTER WHAT. ANYONE WHO WOULD GIVE A BRIVE TO A UNIVERSITY TO GET HIS DAUGHTER A PHONY DEGREE WHILE MY KIDS GETS STUDENT LOANS AND HAS TO EARN IT IS A DISGRACE. HE ALSO STABBED HILLARY IN THE BACK ALONG WITH MY FAVORIT PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON. I AM SO ANGRY AS A DEMOCRAT THESE DAYS. I WOULD NEVER VOTE FOR SOMEONE LIKE BARRACK OBSAMA. THIS GUY IS SUCH A PHONY AND A FRAUD. HE VOTES AGAINST COAL AND GUNS. GOES TO A CHURCH WHO HATES WHITEY FOR 20 YEARS. HE ONLY QUITS HIS CHURCH BECAUSE HES RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. THE ONLY DEMOCRATS ILL VOTE FOR ARE MY DELEGATE, POSSIBLE MANCHIN BECAUSE OF THE GUY HE'S RUNNING AGAINST IS A NOBUDDDY. IF UNDERWOOD WAS RUNNING I BELEIVE MANCHIN WOULD LOSE IN A BIG WAY.

Maybe you think jobs at telemarketing places and fast food restaraunts are not JOBS, but tell that to the people who have no education to get a better job...and I hate to tell you but lots of state jobs don't pay more than the fast food/telemarketers. How can you all blam Joe Manchin for this state being behind? It's always been behind because of the uneducated judgemental people like the ones who comment on here.

I can not believe that you (Me) would try to convince people to vote for "Meeks". People like you are the prime example of why WV gets it's sterotype. The guy's last name is Weeks. If you go to Randolph, Boone, Upshur, Barbour, etc you will find coal mines where the miners are making $20 an hour. Many new jobs have been created. However, the governor is not responsible for bringing jobs here. If WV parents put more thought into their children's education and worked with the educators to help the children, our state would be more intelligent and be someplace that big business can come to. Why would any larger business that pays well want to waste their money on illiterate, drug using, holler hoots who only care about their next beer, cig, can of snuff, or loratab. It is not cost efficient with that kind of worker. The economy is in shambles. People buy what they don't need and only what they want. Stop the careless spending. Pay for the necessary items and see what happens.

Meeks for me... He was so ON when he was talking about the B.S. with the Department of Highways. Manchin has had all of the parts from the DOH headquarters in the counties all moved to Charleston. SSSOOO when a truck gets a flat tire Guess what?? These men have to wait a whole day if not more to get a tire. This is crazy. These men have to wait and then the tax payers say they do nothing. Partially correct they have to wait so this is lost time that the equipment is not being used. Yes he has sold most all the equipment that they had to work with. I know some of the equipment is 20 years old that he has left and sold the newer. Also, Weeks was right about the private contracter that works for the state. Double dipping to the max. Dirty politics by the Mansion mafia. When he took office the DOH had newer vehicles to drive perfectly fine. When he took office he sold them and made a good ol boy deal and bought brand new cars. Meeks has done his homework. LISTEN TO HIM PEOPLE. He knows

Oh and KayeB I agree-where are the jobs?! But I can tell you, it's 11,000 telemarketing jobs and 11,000 store/food service jobs which really aren't jobs at all! Plus, companies look at a city's population when determining to set up shop and that limit is 50,000 people in a city. Huntington's population is dwindling;so needless to say, they'll be shutting down Sitel and a few McD's and Little Caesar's sometime soon.

I would like to Manchin give back him $1mil election fund back to the people of WV if he is elected. Other candidates (in different positions) are running on a few thousand dollars on their campaigns, but Manchin has $1mil ?!?! Where are all these ads and door-to-doors?? I've seen maybe 2 ads since election year started. MANCHIN needs out but god help us there is no one better running.

Posted by: Mom on Oct 14, 2008 at 05:10 PM
Why keep Manchin in office? What has he done for this state? We have been the forgotten state for too long.

Mr Weeks acted like a big bully with no brians

I watched the debate. It was interesting about how many questions weren't answered. I think I might vote for Weeks.

Wow, great site... for Obama anyway.

Posted by: KayeB on Oct 14, 2008 at 06:21 AM
I'd still like to know where all of those 22,000 new jobs are that Manchin's ads claims he has created. WHERE? Indonesia? Certainly not in WV. IF he indeed has created so many, or ANY in the "thousands" here in WV, then please someone POST those here so all of us can actually see what, where & when they are! Also, I think the other man should have been allowed to participate. I think ANYONE representing another option other than these two out-of-control parties should be allowed equal time in debates, in the media etc. Not only for States' races but Nationally. Right now our "democracy" only allows us the two wonderful options of these greedy, self-serving major parties, the Dems & the Repubs. THEY are both just the same. Same old lies. Same old promises. Same old greedy, self-serving liars. I'm serious about posting these 22,000 jobs here WSAZ or SOMEONE please. Where exactly ARE they Mr Manchin? Just asking.
