CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Early voting has begun in West Virginia, with county clerks throughout the state reporting lines of people waiting to cast their ballots.
Officials in Raleigh, Cabell, Kanawha, Monongalia and Berkeley counties all reported steady turnout Wednesday, the first day of early voting.
In the last presidential election, more than 10 percent of all registered voters cast their ballots early.
Unlike 2004, though, new voter registration this year has been relatively low. Experts say the lack of visits to West Virginia by the presidential candidates may be part of the reason.
Both candidates' state campaigns are putting their early voting strategies into play, planning rallies and rides to the polls for voters.
Early voting ends Nov. 1.
