CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - A Democratic research firm out of Charleston reported Wednesday the race for the presidency is a dead heat in West Virginia between John McCain and Barack Obama.

Rainmaker Media Group gives both McCain and Obama 41% preference according to its poll. 17% either chose not to answer or are undecided.

The poll included interviews with 600 likely voters on October 15th-16th. It has a margin of error of 4 points.

Most recent polls showed the Republican McCain with an advantage of anywhere from 6 to 9 points in West Virginia.

Friday, Democratic vice-presidential candidate Joe Biden plans to visit Charleston.

The poll shows a favorability rating for Obama of 45%, ranging from somewhat to very positive. Obama's negatives ranging from somewhat to very negative are at 41%.

McCain's favorability rating is at 47% compared to a 37% negative rating.

By comparison, President George Bush has a negative rating, ranging from somewhat to very negative, of 61%.

Lots of nonsense. I notice how some of these McCain supporters spread lies and accusations about Obama instead of talking about McCain's policies. The past 8 years of Republican rule, which has led our country to the worst economic downturn since the great depression, well that doesnt come up either. They like to focus on taking a great American success story and turning it into a somekind of nightmarish conspiracy. This is just ridiculous and embarassing. The success of Barack Obama makes me proud of this country, and though I cant speak for senator McCain,but I think he is proud of Obama and of America as well. Perhaps John McCain would be better served by supporters who voiced opinions on the issues, and not sounding so filled with hate and fear. The truth is Barack Obama is a great American with the intelect and judgement to create the kind of sound policies which can lead America to a much brighter future.I dont agree with McCain but I can respect him.

Can we assume that 41% of Dems will vote for Barack, and 41% will vote for McCain, thus leaving the remainder, apparently all McCain supporters, to vote for McCain on Nov. 4? Quick math would then show that McCain would have 59%. That's not including the rest of the McCain supporters who apparently were too dumb to answer the phone. But then, there were still 41% who supported McCain, which are, by your conclusion, apparently disqualified from the poll. Does that mean Barack gets 100%? How is apprehension toward a Barack presidency un-"Christlike"? Christ continually warned against the Pharisees, against false "Christs" and against wolves in sheeps clothing. Just because the I do not agree with your candidate does not mean that I hate him. I do not agree with his position an numerous topics(abortion, infanticide, gun control, socialized medicine). I do not believe the country will be best served by his policies("Share the wealth", Open-door foreign policy, catering to the opinions of the world, 'Change' he can't/won't define). I do not agree with the characters he has shown a tendency for poor judgement by surrounding himself with(Louis Farrakan, Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers.,etc) Now if you want to talk about un-"Christlike" Christ would in no way condone the abortion of a baby, much less denying medical care to one who survived the attempt, allowing them to die on a table; unattended so as not to cause "stress" to the mother or the attending Doctor.

To KH, Yes, of course I've heard of scholorships. But check these facts out. I'm not an Obama basher, I'm just saying the majority of the people take these "supposed" statements as truth, and there is too much evidence to indicate otherwise. Ok, Michelle Obama talks about collection calls they used to get from the "loan debt people". Michelle Obama clearly indicates her family's financial hardships have been caused by living in what she calls "this hellhole that is America." But, the Obamas have refused to provide evidence of these loan collections even though they have received many requests from Chicago papers, or the source of the debt. Barack Obama did receive a full scholarship to Occidental, and he rejected it after two years in favor of Columbia. What grants and loans did he get while at Harvard? They try to portray themselves as getting where they are by pure determination and hard work. I feel uneasy most of all by their attitute against the U.S.

For the first time in history, McCain plans to tax individuals directly for the cost of the benefit of their health insurance. This is A TAX INCREASE on you. McCain's plan will also work to dismantle our current system by eliminating the tax credit your employer receives for providing you with health insurance. Most employers are barely able to provide for your health care now. Can you imaging if this incentive is removed? McCain does want to give a maximum tax credit of $5,000 per family for purchase of health insurance; however, a policy for a family of four now costs on average about $12,000/year. Obama's plan for the future of health care is the only viable option.

After reading some of these incredibly asinine comments regarding Obama, I find myself shaking my head in disbelief. Some of you open your mouths just to hear your brains rattle. It is okay to disagree about anything, but your choice of words, your uninformed opinions, and your support of an administration that has nearly crippled this great country is quite disturbing. Some of you make statements that are completely untrue, and the sad thing is you believe them. At least be willing to view the facts and make an informed statement. The use of words like terrorist, Muslim, Satanic devil, and others merely evidences one who is easily led by falsehoods. NONE of you can prove one derogatory statement that you made. You just shoot for effect. Obama is an AMERICAN! History shows us our greatest leaders believed in freedom for all mankind. I am so thankful our forefathers had the intellect to stand up for what is right rather than be influenced by unjustified acts against mankind.

Janette-I don't know, I'm not his financial advisor. All I am trying to say was a response to Lori and her statement about Obama going to college. Also an owner of a million dollar home is the GOP Savior, Sarah Palin. I'm sure she also knows a thing or two about student loans given that she had to transfer 5 times. Also, you have up to 30 years to pay it all back and most people consolidate so that they will have a fixed interest rate. I'm not a major Obama supporter, I just want people to realize that the hate and falsities that they are spewing is proof to many of how ignorant our region is. For example, read the entry from GOPtheoneswhocare. That nonsense is inexcusable in this day and age. If any of you really believe this, then I would suggest applying for citizenship to another country. But if that's a European country, then you all will really experience first-hand socialist taxes. Good luck with that. And Chris M, I couldn't agree more with your statement.

I personally hope that the one best suited to do the job wins. This country needs change alright, and in alot more than just who they pick for president. The "two-party" system is a dinosaur and needs to be scrapped. Instead of voting for the "Democrat" or "Republican" shouldn't we be voting for the "person"? And what's with these lousy commercials!? The latest one states that if Obama is elected, "it will be his first crisis in this chair". "This chair" being the president's chair. Uh, unless I have been in hibernation some where for the last 42 yrs, it would be the first crisis that McCain has faced in "this chair" too. There should be regulations against misleading ads like this one, but there aren't, and the "two-party" system thrives and continues to run things the way it always has. If you think I am wrong, then answer one question: Why is it that an "independant" candidate has NEVER won the presidency in recent times?

Oh and one more thing, do any of you actually understand what socialism is and how to define it? If so, you would see that many of the programs that we have right now are "socialist". Such as our education system. This doesn't mean we are in a socialist country. Also, Obama's plans aren't socialist if you all would just read them. He wants to begin taxing the upper class again, which is something that hasn't been done since W's 2001/2003 tax cuts. I would suggest that many of you educate yourselves with info from sources other than email forwards, miscellaneous sound bites, and FOX News. Of course that would mean exposing yourselves to the liberal elite media and actually learning.

Shame for shame, that is pathetic. I remember Clinton ran from the states during the Vietmam era, another demo chicken! Thank God for men like McCain and my dad and grandfather and uncles and couisins that did fight in all the wars. I even have an ancestor that was a drummer boy in the Rev War. Thank god for our war heros, those with metals and those without them. If Barry O gets in he will trash our economy. LORI-Have you ever heard of scholarships, grants, loans etc.? The first 2 are usually given to lower socioeconomic students in order to go to college. That is how Obama went to college. He and Michelle have both admitted to just recently being able to pay off their student loans. If you have done the "research" that you have urged readers to do, then you would know all of this.

Where is all the dirt on Obama and Biden? We never hear anyone besides Foxnews asking both sides questions! Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But people need to research the candidates and not take the liberal media's "so-called reporting" as the gospel. I personally resent the way the media filters the news in order to promote their candidate of choice. Think about it..Obama supposedly grew up poor and his mother received foodstamps. Ok, where did he get the money for his expensive education? What about his new million dollar home? A senator's pay won't cover it. He wasn't born into a wealthy family. So who's footing the bills? I'm sick of the race card the Dem.s are playing. If a white Rep. senator without experience ran for pres. he would be laughed off the planet. Obama has too many unanswered questions about his past and both he and his wife seem angry and determined. He's a smooth talking liberal lawyer, but I personally am looking for stability and experience in a pres. for our great nation.

Funny how the news media has chosen a side and it ain't McCain

The shameless scare tactics of the Republican party...and their insistence and desire for feeding the public simple answers to very complex questions has got to stop. Obama is an articulate, extremely intelligent man w/ an awesome array of skills. Biden has been the national "go-to" person to explain international dilemas for years. The Obama/Biden team is our saving grace. But the very wealthy, the very scared and terribly ignorant continue to pursue the Republican party...simply because they are so very scared of a greatly educated man whose not of "the country club set." Shame on the Republican Party--nationally and locally--for creating and feeding fear. The demographics of WV are such that the 3 G's--God, Guns, and Gays--will probably give our electorate to McCain/Palin. I pray that nationally though our collective intelligence is higher--to see us w/ a President who will not be a national/international embarassment.

This poll is a democratic poll and is b.s. i use to work for a polling firm look at the dates and samples. rasmusson was five days latter he has it 52-43 mccain, ppp(dem)pollster has it 50-42 3 days after this b.s. poll, and even mason dixon has it 47-41 with mccain up 6. so either three polls that are accurate are wrong or a poll that was done a week earlier is right. get with the times, plus your likely samples are way off.

HOW scary!!!!!!!!!! Please people put God and your country first. We do not need a dictator...we do not need a socialist...say NO to communism!!!!!! If Obama gets elected...these places where you can post commments will be gone. There will be no more freedom of speech. We will all be standing in line this time next year with a voucher to pick our Thanksgiving turkey...and then since the government will be paying for our insurance..they are going to tell us that we cannot use any butter or oil to cook it. He does not condemn the radical Muslims' faith...he empathizes with them..do you want this type of person in charge of our safety? Now is NOT the time to raise taxes...it will take us directly into the depression. Businesses will not be able to afford the taxes and will lay off and people will lose jobs. Big corps will move out of the USA. Taxing businesses will raise cost of all of everything for consumers causing a financial crisis. Please people vote like our troops vote.

A democratic research firm ?? Is that CBS, NBC or CNN. This just in , a Republican research firm says that McCain is ahead..Media trying to manipulate people. I am sure they (liberal media) will come out 10 minutes after voting starts and claim Obama the winner so republicans will not vote...
