WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSAZ) -- Politico.com reported Tuesday that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is quietly working to remove Senator Robert Byrd from his position as appropriations chairman. The political newspaper says the move should happen shortly after the election and is one of Reid's top concerns.

It is not the first time newspapers on Capitol Hill broached the subject of Byrd's removal as chairman. Byrd is 90 years old and has spent some time in the hospital this year.

Tuesday afternoon, Byrd's office released the following statement.

“I learned a long time ago you can’t believe everything you read in the papers, especially here in Washington," Senator Robert Byrd said. “I am totally focused on electing Barack Obama as President and Anne Barth as Congresswoman in next weeks’ elections. And in my capacity as Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, I continue to craft a potential second stimulus package that will benefit Main Street America.”

Byrd appeared in Charleston last week to campaign along with vice-presidential candidate Joe Biden and congressional candidate Anne Barth.

I agree w/ Anonymous on Oct 29, 2008 at 09:47 AM. I don't particularly care for RCB, one thing that is true is that he is passionate about what he does and does what he THINKS is best. He has been very faithful to his job. Agreed, how many people hold a job at 90.

This is for John. If you can't say anything good, then don't say anything at all. Senator Byrd has always stuck up for WV. He has did his best when there is grant money to be used. Sen.Byrd loves WV., West Virginia people, and most of all we love him! The senators from hawaii, and the senator that Byrd was good enough to take under his wing(Reid) so many years ago, has turned on him. They need to be concentrating on the economy instead of railroading Senator Byrd!

Anybody who thinks there's too many things in WV with Byrds name on them is stupid. As long as we HAVE those roads, buildings, bridges, and whatever else he's gottn for us, it doesn't matter whos name is on it. I'd rather have a new road with Byrd's name on it then none at all. As for the other states not getting the money, who cares? WV is always forgotten in DC, Byrd makes sure we get some of the extras. Who else would do that? Byrd's old. He's tired. He may be out of touch, but the man loves his state, no doubt about that. Good job Byrd!!! Let's hope your replacement (when he does get replaced) cares half as much as you do!
