UPDATE @ 1:50pm
West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin appeared on CNBC Monday to discuss the coal controversy.

Governor Manchin says he believes Obama's statements were taken out of context.

Manchin also says he believes "West Virginia is going to be the sleeper for Barack Obama." He believes Obama could win the state in Tuesday's election and that he will be our next President.

He says Obama is the better man to help the nation's struggling economy.

United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) International President Cecil E. Roberts issued the following statement:

"Sen. John McCain and his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, have once again demonstrated that they are willing to say anything and do anything to win this election. Their latest twisting of the truth is about coal and some comments Sen. Obama made last January about the future use of coal in America.

Here what the McCain campaign left out of Sen. Obama’s actual words: ‘But this notion of no coal, I think, is an illusion. Because the fact of the matter is, is that right now we are getting a lot of our energy from coal. And China is building a coal-powered plant once a week. So what we have to do then is figure out how can we use coal without emitting greenhouse gases and carbon. And how can we sequester that carbon and capture it.'

Sen. Obama has been consistent with that message not just in the coalfields, but everywhere else he goes as well. Despite what the McCain campaign and some far right-wing blogs would have Americans believe, Sen. Obama has been and remains a tremendous supporter of coal and the future of coal.

I noted that Sen. McCain even went so far yesterday as to say he has always been a supporter of coal. I wonder, then, how he can justify his statement at a Senate hearing in 2000 that, ‘In a perfect world we would like to transition away from coal entirely,’ and his leading role in sponsoring legislation in 2003 that would have wiped out 78 percent of all coal production in America?

Fortunately, UMWA members, their families and their friends and neighbors in the coalfields know all too well what is going on here. They’re not going to fall for it, and we urge others throughout America who care about coal to review what the candidates’ records on coal actually are. We are confident that once they do, and once they see the many other benefits to working families of voting for Sen. Obama, they will make the right choice for themselves and their families."

Monday, the Ohio Coal Association sent out a news release in reference to the story.

Mike Carey, president of the Ohio Coal Association (OCA), today issued the following statement in response to just-released remarks from Senator Barack Obama about the nation's coal industry.

"Regardless of the timing or method of the release of these remarks, the message from the Democratic candidate for President could not be clearer: the Obama-Biden ticket spells disaster for America's coal industry and the tens of thousands of Americans who work in it.

"These undisputed, audio-taped remarks, which include comments from Senator Obama like 'I haven't been some coal booster' and 'if they want to build [coal plants], they can, but it will bankrupt them' are extraordinarily misguided.

"It's evident that this campaign has been pandering in states like Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana and Pennsylvania to attempt to generate votes from coal supporters, while keeping his true agenda hidden from the state's voters.

"Senator Obama has revealed himself to be nothing more than a short- sighted, inexperienced politician willing to say anything to get a vote. But today, the nation's coal industry and those who support it have a better understanding of his true mission, to 'bankrupt' our industry, put tens of thousands out of work and cause unprecedented increases in electricity prices.

"In addition to providing an affordable, reliable source of low-cost electricity, domestic coal holds the key to our nation's long-term energy security - a goal that cannot be overlooked during this time of international instability and economic uncertainty.

"Few policy areas are more important to our economic future than energy issues. As voters head to the polls tomorrow, it is essential they remember that access to reliable, affordable, domestic energy supplies is essential to economic growth and stability."

The Ohio Coal Association (OCA) is a non-profit trade association representing the interests of Ohio's underground and surface coal mining producers. The OCA represents nearly 40 coal producing companies and more than 50 Associate Members, which include suppliers and consultants to the mining industry, coal sales agents and brokers and allied industries. The Ohio Coal Association is committed to advancing the development and utilization of Ohio coal as an abundant, economic and environmentally sound energy source.

Statement by Senator Jay Rockefeller:

“The claims you are hearing from the McCain/Palin campaign are misleading and untrue.

Barack Obama has been very clear with me and with you on his plan for clean coal – and it’s the most aggressive plan in support of clean coal we’ve seen from any presidential candidate.

The idea that the McCain/Palin campaign is alleging the day before the election that Barack Obama’s commitment to coal is anything but solid is absolutely ridiculous.

This is exactly the kind of deceptive politicking voters are fed up with.”

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- With only hours before election day, coal has become a major topic of Decision 2008.

Sunday, comments resurfaced from a taped interview Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama did with the San Francisco Chronicle in January.

In the interview, which has been available online for months, Obama talks about the importance of coal. He went on to talk about his cap and trade proposal to help curb global warming.

"If somebody wants to build a coal power plant they can, it's just that it will bankrupt them because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted," Barack Obama said to the San Francisco Chronicle in January.

The campaign for Republican presidential candidate John McCain jumped on those comments today and is already sending out taped phone messages to voters in Ohio.

Campaigning in Marietta today, McCain's running mate Sarah Palin mentioned the Obama comments.

"He said that, sure, if the industry wants to build coal-fired power plants, then they can go ahead and try, he says, but they can do it only in a way that will bankrupt the coal industry, and he's comfortable letting that happen. And you got to listen to the tape," Sarah Palin said.

The Obama campaign says the quote is being taken out of context and that Obama is actually from a coal state and is a strong supporter of the industry.

The campaign sent a statement today saying "the point Obama is making is that we need a transition from coal burning power plants built with old technology to plants built with advanced technologies."

Monday, the San Francisco Chronicle pointed out the interview has been available on its website since January. It was critical of blogs which claimed the audio was hidden until this point.

To respond to some previous comments, we might want to clarify: while nuclear power produces less greenhouse gas emissions than coal, it still produces them over its life-cycle. Furthermore, it physically can't be the only solution for energy deployment. I read a study that said there are limits to how fast an energy technology can grow, and nuclear can't grow fast enough to meet demand while replacing coal energy too. The study I mentioned is posted here: http://inderscience.metapress.com/app/home/contribution.asp?referrer=parent&backto=issue,6,6;journal,2,6;linkingpublicationresults,1:119992,1 With another similar conference paper here: http://me.queensu.ca/people/pearce/publications/documents/asp3.pdf

I guess he supports burning more tree. Raise taxes on coal power, and people will burn more wood to heat there houses. All in a time when our economy sucks lets make it cost more for power. Stupid.

The solution to dealing with toxic emissions is simple. The average plant emitts about 1000 cubic ft per minute of 3 really bad oxygen compounds-so-no-and co2-The smoke leaves the stack above 200 degrees and settles out downwind and downstream. The damage to nature is beyond words. My proposal is simple, put the emissions thru a series of chambers designed to reduce the temperature and collect the toxic elements, about 10 minutes and a dozen or so reactors would do the job, the overall size of the cheapest reactors may be around 300 acres of structures, the elemental components could be removed using catalysts mixed with fluids in the vapour stage as well as acellerated mixtures of water and air. Mostly the compounds seperate with a reduction in temperature via normal elemental changes. The solution, not complicated, compared to the saving of all life forms. The only thing lacking is the will and the misunderstanding of what it involves. Too many grant masters.I would do it for free

Pacific, Northeast and Middle Atlantic regions use the least amounts of coal for energy. Texas, WV, KY, MO, OH, PA, IL, and IN probably account for half of all the coal used for energy. So...8 states which get their energy almost entirely from coal should account for your figure of half of the energy in the US comes from coal. I'm saying those states should invest in alternative energy sources. Maintaining jobs is an arguable excuse as to why WV should not evolve, but it is not a good one. The government already justifies some of its backwards policies on keeping jobs. Our entire War on Drugs is to keep law enforcement and those in political positions with jobs. It hasn't worked since its inception, and isn't working now. We need some reform in that area as well. And as far as drilling. It will take some time to get the oil & Natural Gas. but demand isn't decreasing and the sooner we drill the sooner we get the benefit. oil is in almost every product you buy it is needed for other things other that gas. And I disagree with your comment of WV & KY being the only states dependant on coal. Coal makes up 50% of the energy in the USA. WV & KY coal use does not account for even close to 100% of the USA's coal usage. Every states energy is produced heavily with coal. Including the very liberal North East.

Posted by: Bob on Nov 7, 2008 at 10:57 AM
Yes I have heard of the other energy sources. And on a large scale the only thing that can replace the megawatt you get from coal is Nuclear. Obama is also against Nuclear. Wind and solar at this time are a joke. It wont meet rising demand for energy. who wants our beautiful country side polluted with an eye sore of wind mills every were. I saw a report on TV of a huge wind farm in Texas that took up 2 counties. It was 10 of thousands acres. It didn't replace the mega watt out put of one unit at my coal plant. And look at the jobs these Green Jobs will cost. It took only 4 people to man that wind farm after it was built. These place take good long term jobs and replace them with alot of temporary jobs. After the wind and solar farms are built it only takes a minimal amount of people to maintain them. Green eliminates jobs. Something our economy needs.

Bob, you can look at an energy breakdown by state. WV and KY by far are ran almost entirely on coal. The rest of the nation, not so much. There are multiple other sources for energy even if you haven't heard about them for the coal dust in your ears. Also, if you listen to the entire speech, you will know it was taken out of context since he and McCain and most of the other politicians in office support clean coal technology. Byrd doesn't and said he could not because he fears what it would do to WV. One person against the rest of the country doesn't seem like good odds to me. The state needs to evolve and not rely on energy sources from the 19th century. Lastly, you do realize that the off shore drilling proposed would not be able to take place for many years. It would not help at all with gas prices. And the rumor about other countries drilling off the US shores is untrue. The EPA would not allow it. They are the ones protecting the species and coasts.

Posted by: Bob on Nov 6, 2008 at 11:58 AM
Jay Rockefeller is out of touch with WV. Why do people keep sending this worthless politician back to DC? He is against drilling in the USA I wouldn't doubt he is against coal too. Barack Hussein Obama's comments were not taking out of context. He said what he said. Listen to it. Then leaves all his supporters scrambling in damage control. Both Manchin & Rockefeller are bad for WV. They are supporting a guy that wants to bankrupt the coal industry that would bankrupt WV.. Wake up WV.. I pray those words were taken out of context but I really don't think they were. Look at where he said it. San Francisco. He hidn't think us Hillbillies would hear them. I work for a coal fired power plant and these next four years we wont be going on vacation we wont be spending any money except for the necessities. We planned on buying a new car after the election but not now. Who knows how long I will still have a good job.

I think the ignorant people that say lets get rid of coal do not understand the percentage of power that is generated in U.S. by coal. Our enemies will be licking their chops.

Anonymous, everything you mentioned may currently be related to coal in some way, I doubt it though. But, if so, there are other sources of energy in the world. I'll tell you another thing that coal gives to the world and miners...black lung. Have a good day. I know I will. Obama won!!!!

For all you hateful McCain supporters....shut up and deal with it....even McCain realizes his lose.....Obama has always been the man.

Thank you Coal Miners!! Already lost their sticks and way . Tell your children, I ran America today. I provide her with everything she nees for all the people who work for a living to be productive. I even provide the power to run Wall street and Washington Dc. The next time someone ask you what yyou do for a living you tell them, Imine the coal that runs America. Thank you for the quality of life.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 5, 2008 at 02:21 PM
Thank you Coal Miners.. The Next time you pass a person protesting coal, stop a minute and educate him. Ask him or her if they really want to live in a world free of coal. When they say yes, smile. Have them strip down to nothing, because coal provides their clothes, tell them to put there shoes on the pile too. Leave ther laptop and i-pod. If they have a tatoo tell them they may have to take a little coal with them unless they want to cut it off so they can remain pristine. Then break them off a stick, don't cut it with a knife because coal was instrumental in making the knife, hand them a rock and stick and send them to the woods on foot. Tell them you would give them some matches but that too is contaminated with coal and a flashlight is definitlyy out of the question. Then go home to your family and take a minute to tell your children what you did today. Explain to them what coal provides so they won't end up like the poor ignorant fools you sent to the woods that have already

Thank You coal Miners! First I thank god,and then I thank you for my home and everything in it,my car,my clothes, the heat pump, the food on my table. You help provide it all. Not just my life but every life in America need to realize what you do for them everyday. You provide raw materials that runs factories, refineries and the stell mills, the trains, planes, trucks and subways. The tiny baby struggling for life in an incubator will live because of the COAL YOU MINE, which makes it possible to build the unit and the supply it with the exact amount of heat and air to sustain the precious life. You help provide all the bulding material for all the cities and towns, and highways across America. All things inside those buldings, and then the light, heat and cool them. Every man-made thing, I dare say, you help provide in some way. I can't think of anything you don't touch in some way.

Bible Lady speaks the truth and some of you make fun of her. She is the nicest woman I have met, but really gets fired up about religion. She shared this verse with me: "As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the father's sakes." - Romans 11:28. I think this verse pertains to people like Bible Lady who tried to inform the public about our new snake in the grass President. You all didn't listen.

If you want to know why so many people are turned off by religion today just read some of the comments posted by these fine christians below. I have never seen so much hate and judging coming from people that are living at the foot of the cross. The way some of you are living don't bother praying for my soul because I don't think your connection with your God is as great as you want others to believe.

From an Obama supporter I have one question for all of you. If the your candidate loses the election where do you go from there? Sean Hannity is talking on his radio show about an "underground conservative uprising" if Obama wins this election. As an Obama supporter if McCain wins I feel it is my patriotic duty to fully support him for at least 2 years and see how things turn out. I feel like Hannity preaching this uprising is the most unpatriotic thing I have ever heard of and every American no matter what party should give the president a chance for a few years to see how things turn out. Am I the only one that feels it is our patriotic duty to support the President or will half our population hate our President before he ever serves a day in office?

The Bible says to Go and preach the Gospel to all nations. Christ told his disciples that if they do not receive you, "Shake the dust of that city off your shoes. Let it be a testament to them." It also says that rebuke those that sin, if they hear you and repent "you have gained a brother"/sister if they do not, then consider that man a heretic.

Posted by: To Tina on Nov 4, 2008 at 06:03 PM
Yours may very well be the dumbest post on here. You do realize that WV has been a Democratic state for decades, led by Democrats in the Senate and the House, both nationally and within the state, and has been for YEARS. Take another look at the power structure within state Government and then spout off again about who is hurting WV. Any nail Bush may have driven, was into a coffin that was already closed.

I have no doubt that Bible Lady is inspired by God. She lives next to me and is the kindest lady I know. You don't want to cross her on the Bible though. Those who insist on making fun of her will live to regret this decision. She showed me this verse which I don't find "odd" or ambiguous as Anonymous insinuated below about some of the others. Read it and reflect. You will see the Lord working through this scripture and it deals DIRECTLY with what is going on as we speak: "Concerning the Good News, they are enemies for your sake. But concerning the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sake." - Romans 11:28. To the true Christians among us, it is chilling isn't it? Pick up your Bible and read it if you don't believe it. I pray that you repent before the morrow is upon us.

Anonymous, you ask WWJD. Well, he did turn over the tables of those vendors making change in the temple. Jesus was GOD in human form. Perhaps you should go back to the Old Testament to see how GOD handled those who turned their backs on him and his teachings. God's striking down did not end with the Old Testament. Saul, later Paul, was struck down from his horse and shown the power of the true GOD. He then became the most ardent disciple of Christ and his teachings. Helping out a person who turns their backs on GOD would scare me for fear of being struck down myself. If you thought the BIBLE was all about happiness and rainbows, then you really should get to a church ASAP and read your BIBLE. Luke 19:27 - "But bring those enemies of mine who didn't want me to reign over them here, and kill them before me.'" Hebrews 10:27 - "There remains nothing but a certain awful expectation of judgement, and the fury of a fire which before long will devour the enemies of the truth."

You all are worshipping this person (last time I checked, he still is a person), like he is the Messiah or something. Get a clue--this is just a very inexperienced regular guy who has the knack of attracting millions to hear him talk, talk, talk (many cult leaders have had that knack too). Be careful what you wish for, 'cause you just might get it. You are wanting to put a person who couldn't even get an FBI clearance (due to his lack of judgement and affiliations) in charge of the U.S. You are just nuts!

I do thank GOD for one thing. That this election will be decided tonight. Then we don't have to listen to you bible thumping idiots that only get their "facts" from political ads and odd scripture in the bible that can be interpreted any way you want. Obama wants CLEAN coal plants. As a human on this planet, we should all agree on that. You people that get yourselves worked up over something taken out of context need to get on some anti-anxiety medication and breathe deeply. Before you jump to conclusions, go to REAL SOURCES FOR REAL FACTS. Educate yourselves. BTW, to BIBLE LADY. I can't see you being a true christian because you would turn your back on someone that doesn't believe just as you do. That's not the Christian thing to do. Open up your eyes BIBLE LADY. You are not living up to WWJD if that's how you would treat others. Whatever church you attend, I would certainly stay out of.

KY LADY... better go to Fox News they will show you the whole video HAHAHAHAHA. That is the funniest thing I have heard all week. Fox News is well known as being a right-wing propoganda machine. You would not criticize Wright if they showed the whole video because from a white, christian who watched the whole video even his comments were taken out of context. Maybe you will see Obama saying he will bankrupt the coal induastry on Fox News, but turn over to another news channel and there is at least a chance they will tell you McCain agrees with Obama on that and they share very similar plans to charge for greenhouse gas emissions.

Thank-you for the most sane, literate, and well thought out post on here. You have my respect. To Travis: While KY Lady may not be correct in her accusations that Obama "hates white people", she is dead on with her comment that a follower of Christ CANNOT vote for the support or supporters of what are abominations in the sight of God. You said you voted your Bible, but I suspect you voted your wallet. If you can show me in your Bible where God or Christ would be supportive of a man who supports, not only abortion, but the killing of infants OUT of the mother, then I will stand corrected. However, I have studied my Bible faithfully, and there is no book, chapter, or verse that would support such a vote for Barack.

How dare some of you make fun of us good Christians trying to get out the word on the snake known as Obama bin Hussein. In the Old Testament a group of kids were making fun of a crippled Christian man. God sent a mother bear to eat these children. The BIBLE says that God is a jelous God. You're worship of Obama is not viewed kindly by him I would presume. Those who turn your back on GOD and the BIBLE and vote for this snake in the grass better not come to me wanting a locust wing or a smidgeon of my honey when the END TIMES are upon us. Obama will bring our nation to ruin. Those of who know what has been foretold will band together and await the coming of our LORD. For he shall avenge his people. When the Christians of the world disappear in droves and the news stations wonder what happened to a large chunk of those in the nation I bet panic will ensue. Well, us true Christians won't be panicking. We'll be rocked in the loving arms of our SAVIOUR. The others, God will smite.

Any NRA member should know that McCain sponsored the gun show loophole bill in Congress. The NRA was all over him in advertisements and telephone solicitation calls call him anti-gun and everything else. He received a D rating regarding gun rights. Go back and look at your NRA literature if you don't believe it. They did endorse McCain this election even though they never endorsed G. W. Bush. I would assume this has more to do with their KKK roots than any hatred Obama has of guns. That's right. After the War a couple of Confederate generals got together and started a little gun club. It still exists today.

There has been one 2nd Amendment case that has made it to the Supreme Court. The rewording of a petition is not enough to make them re-hear an issue that has already been settled. Abortion was made Constitutional by Roe v. Wade. How many abortion cases does the Supreme Court now hear? I can name one and it was the one in 2007 that upheld the ban on partial birth abortion. Hunter probably barely has a high school education. I am a licensed attorney. Trust me when I say he is wrong. When has any President attempted to make abortion illegal post Roe v. Wade? When has any President tried to ban guns? This has not and will not happen. Hunter doesn't understand the separation of powers part of the Constitution. I suggest he read over Articles 1, 2, and 3 of the Constitution. It's not very long. While you're at it you should check out Marbury v. Madison as well. To make a change to the Constitution (2nd Amendment), it will take an Amendment to the Constitution. Anything else is lies. Believe.

I did vote the Bible, Obama 08! KY LADY says and I quote "He hates Americans and whites"...wow, all I can say is I hope you vote because it is something we should all feel obligated to do. But you mam are voting based on ignorance and hatred. A vote for McCain can be respected, but not for those reasons. I hope you get some help, maybe you should open that bible up a little more often.

Why would anyone vote for another person from oil state? Hasn't 8 years been enough of high prices and young people losing their lives in Iraq? Why hasn't anyone questioned McCain about being the grandchild of slave owner who had children by by his slaves. In other words he has black relatives to, only he refused to acknowledge them. Or the wife he left because she was disfigured in a care wreck. That is who you want.

Posted by: Linda on Nov 4, 2008 at 02:08 PM
I am black, and I voted for McCain...Not for any reason other than I think he has more experience and will do a better job. Let Mr. Obama run again when he has a few more years under his belt, and we all know what he really stands for. Did you even know who he was 3 years ago? No--nobody did, and he is still wet behind the ears, and has some growing up to do. Let him cut his teeth and get experience from another position somewhere else; not from the most powerful position in the Free World. I would rather have a tried and true known than to fear what's ahead from an extreme liberal unknown with LOTS of very over-liberal friends. Next thing you know, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Oprah will be in the Presidential cabinet running America. No thank you... I'll pass on that for now. What I don't understand is why he didn't say that he's 1/2 Caucasian. He could have really reached everyone then. Instead he was the one saying he was a pround black man. Well, he's 1/2 white too...

Obama is a deceiver, read your Bibles people, he is not who we want as our President now or ever. How many terrorists and crooks can one man have as friends anyways? Obama seems to have plenty. He hates Americans and whites, ....he sat in with others at meeting who said just that. McCain is more of an American and a better person overall, than he will ever hope to be. The democrat party is for abortion, homosexuals, gay marriage...and as a christian...or as anyone who truly believes in God and reads their Bible knows those things are against GOD'S WORD, therefore you can not vote for Obama PERIOD. The coal thing...yes they have him on video saying just that in plain english, no misunderstandings at all. look it up and watch it for yourself. better go to foxnews because msnbc/cnn and others have not been showing full stories and video clips about Obama. That is why the public is so misinformed about Obama (the truth). If everyone knew the truth, he wouldn`t get elected as Co. dogcatcher

The fact that it took you until today to make up your mind thoroughly explains the 'thoughts' reflected in your post. First of all, they have the opportunity to place uber-liberal Supreme Court Justices on the Bench. Once they are in place, simply rewording of their petition is reason enough for the Supreme Court to review the postion. All they would have to do is change their "interpretation" of the 2nd Amendment in regards to the petition. This ruling would NOT require participation from ANY voters, other than the nine on the bench. Aside from that, a liberal Democratic majority in Congress coupled with a liberal Democratic President would have to do nothing more than to increase the taxes on both guns AND ammunition to a point where you can't afford to own one. This accomplishes the same desired conclusion without the messy court procedings. So, in response to your "fear and ignorance" comment...loks like the ignorance is yours. We have grown to expect no less from the Obamanation

I hope Obama wins so Senator McCain can come back to his place of birth and become our next President in 2009. Panama never recognized the Panama Canal Zone, so they consider anyone born in the area to be a natural born Panamanian citizen. I understand the US is trying to claim him now too, and for a time so did Vietnam. The truth of the matter is that we could use his solid leadership in a time of strife in our country's history. Do us all a favor and vote for Obama. We'll make sure the Panama of the 1980s (think the Panama Jack craze) comes back strong with a leader like McCain...in Panama.

Jerome Corsi’s “The Obama Nation” is a mishmash of unsupported conjecture, half-truths, logical fallacies and outright falsehoods. Corsi is a renowned conspiracy theorist who says that George Bush is attempting to create a North American Union (we looked at that here) and that there is evidence that the World Trade Center may have collapsed because it was seeded with explosives. More recently, Corsi claimed that Obama released a fake birth certificate. We’ve debunked that twice now. And, as our colleagues at PolitiFact.com found, many of the themes in “The Obama Nation” are reworked versions of bogus chain e-mail smears. In Corsi’s case, we judge that both his reputation and his latest book fall short when measured by the standards of good scholarship, or even of mediocre journalism.

I don't know about every aspect of coal fired power plants, but I DO know that AEP & every other power plant in America are under a time restriction to modernize & install "clean technology". My fiancee is a union ironworker who has been working at every power plant in the area & has stated that this is the big work in the area now. The power plants are working to lower the emissions. They ARE doing what the EPA demanded. Obama & his remarks simply reflect his playing both sides of the story. He is telling each side what they want to hear to get him into office. Obama doesn't want to drill off-shore, even though other countries are drilling off our shores right now. He stated he'd consider it. That's double talk for not a chance. McCain has drawbacks, but at least he has the experience and the scars from defending our country. I don't want a great speaker in office, which Obama is, I want a Pres who won't be pushed around. That's McCain. Sorry to hear about Obama's grandmother though.

"Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake. One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are always liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate." - Titus 1:9-16

He showed me in a vision that Obama is the answer the nation needs. "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised." Hunter, thank you for helping me decide who to vote for today. Having people like you attempt to distort the truth and tell us our guns can be taken away after the Supreme Court has declared the 2nd Amendment an individual right is ridiculous. The only way guns could be taken away is with a Constitutional Amendment. Do you know how many of those we've had? The voters of the states would have to vote to take away guns. Not gonna happen, just like Roe v. Wade will not be overturned. The GOP always campaigns like they can do something about. Short of a Constitutional Amendment that won't happen. The Supreme Court is the ultimate interpreter of the Constitution. This was decided in the early 1800s court case Marbury v. Madison. If you let fear and ignorance run your life and vote based on lies you are no better than those filling your head with those lies. With this being said I will now be voting Obama. I don't bow down to fear mongering or dirty politics.

John McCain supports a very similar cap and trade program to Obama's. The cap and trade program basically puts a price each unit of greenhouse gas emissions. New plants that are able to use clean coal technology, once perfected, would not fall under this cap and trade program because they will emit very little greenhouse gases. ONCE AGAIN JOHN MCCAIN SUPPORTS THE SAME EXACT THING. The Republicans are the real liars, McCain has run the dirtiest campaign in history and I for one don't trust someone who will stoop to the levels that he has.

Now there is absolute proof. In 2001, Obama, the "community organizer" turned legislator, said in an interview: "And I think one of the tragedies of the civil rights movement was that the civil rights movement became so court-focused, I think there was a tendency to lose track of the political and organizing activities on the ground that are able to bring about the coalitions of power through which you bring about redistributive change, and in some ways we still suffer from that," http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iivL4c_3pck 2001 Chicago Public Radio Interview. Posted by: Why I'm Voting DEMOCRAT, Continued on Nov 3, 2008 at 10:12 PM
Obama’s 143 real days of service in the US Senate certainly qualifies him to be President and Commander in Chief. Even though no retail chain store (such as Nordstrom’s, etc) or college/university would accept him as CEO with only 143 days service as a salesman or untenured professor. After all, just what do you expect from retail stores who should not really be making money or colleges and universities where they spend all of their time in the proverbial “think tank”.Obama’s mind is not clouded with too much information, such as he would have if he had actually been say a Governor of a State, Mayor of a community or Executive with some Fortune 500 company. There is a lot to be said for being overly qualified.I believe businesses in America should not be allowed to make profits. Businesses should just break even, that's all they need, and give the rest to the government so politicians and bureaucrats can redistribute the money the way they think it should be redistributed. Thanks.

Posted by: Why I'm Voting DEMOCRAT on Nov 3, 2008 at 10:09 PM
I'd rather pay $5 for a gallon of gas than allow drilling for oil off the coasts of America.I think the government will do a better job of spending my money than I could. Redistribution of the wealth is a good thing. I mean, just look at how well the Government now handles Social Security, Medicare and collecting our taxes via the IRS. Certainly the Government has done such a wonderful job with Medicare that they can handle health care for all Americans far better than the private sector.I believe people who can't tell us if it will rain in two or three days, can now tell us the polar ice caps will disappear in ten years if I don't start riding a bicycle, build a windmill and inflate my tires to proper levels. It's all right to kill millions of babies as long as we keep violent, convicted murderers on death row alive for 20 years or commute their sentences to be rehabilitated into society. I can now marry whatever I want, so I've decided to marry my Prius Hybrid. Thanks.

What part of BANKRUPTING THE COAL INDUSTRY don't you get? how can you make better plants if you are BANKRUPT! Under Panamanian law, McCain is a naturally born Panamanian citizen. Panama never recognized the Canal Zone as part of a foreign nation but regards it as having always been part of Panama, but under foreign occupation. As such, McCain is fully entitled to run for President of the Republic of Panama during the upcoming May 2009 elections. Instead of returning to Arizona, as the candidate recently stated he would do after losing in November, he should consider putting his country first and move his campaign down south.

Everything Obama does is taken out of context, to hear his campaign tell it. There is no way his comments can be twisted to make them look pro-coal. He was pandering to the San Francisco crowd and telling them what they wanted to hear, just as he does routinely all over the country. I am so disappointed that all of these things Obama and his crazy wife say just don't have an impact. How can someone so anti-American become the next President of the United States?

Steve, you know all of our unions are socialist as well. Read history of the the early 1900s and the movement for unionization. Strikers were shot and killed while unarmed. The newspapers headlines spokes of "antagonizers" and communist ties. All because they wanted an honest day's pay for an honest day's work. This was also the movement for an 8 hour day instead of working employees until they died and then just replacing them with another poor immigrant and discarding the body. Many strikers and members of unions were convicted of trumped up charges during WWI only to be cleared of any wrongdoing when the war was over and the United States began thinking clearly again. The good that these socialists did is still felt in today's workforce by higher pay, safer conditions, and less corruption by corporate greed. West Virginia, the nation is counting on your wisdom to see through Obama's rhetoric and help us elect the only man with the character and experience to lead America through these times,JOHN MCCAIN.Every time Obama travels around the country,he caters to what he thinks they want to hear, and trashes the rest of us,like his comment about those people in PA "clinging to their guns and Bibles".Don't let a smooth talking lawyer deceive you into thinking he's capable of handling the presidency. If he wants to wait it out, send him back to the Senate to see if he can actually show up to vote instead of voting "PRESENT".There aren't any present votes as president, and John McCain is tested and can work with both parties.Obama wants to put restraints on your secret bsllot and squelch free speech,as well as desimate the Constitution.Tell the media that Democracy can't be bought with Obama's millions.

Guess all the fired up miners failed to read the rest of the story and Cecil Roberts' comments showing his support for Obama. Maybe bankrupting the coal industry would be a good thing after all. Then maybe the miners and wives would have a reason to get an education beyond a secondary education.

Another repub administration will KILL the majority of Americans, their policies of give to rich to "trickle down" to the rest is and has always been a failure. I've always heard the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and to expect a different result. All of the 2000 and 2004 agendas are BIG failures. so that makes all you supporters insane. Maybe you should go and illegally tape people like McConnell and see if you can furthur your agendas. Any hourly paid American who votes for Repubs is a sucker for punishment. These people are losers and they're costing everyone dearly. You people are morons. Coal is going to be a bygone product, like it or lump it, learn another skill and stop poisoning everyone including yourselves, idiots.

Seems everyone likes to ignore WhatsThis and the full comments made by Obama backed with his support of a bill which shows his support of the coal industry. He was born in Hawaii, but he's "from" Illinois (represents them...like Rockefeller is "from" WV as a Senator). Illinois is a coal state and borders Ohio. How could anyone fall for such a cheap ploy by the Right. This comment was made months back and they are just now trying to use it. Well, I also wanted to let you know Obama's grandmother died today. Think about that when you go vote. Your hurtful and misrepresented comments are the cause.

God forbid Obama wants to find a way to clean up the coal industry so we don't conitnue to pollute our environment!!No, people aren't trying to tell you what he really means, just listen to the whole statement and it's pretty clear. I for one would like to leave my children a cleaner earth, I guess that's a bad thing for McCain supporters? By the way, my uncle is the president of his coal minning union in KY, and he sent me a shirt that says,"United Mine Workers of America for Obama-Biden". Somehow don't think the mine workers would be for someone who wanted to bankrupt them! Use your brain!

America's electricity comes from COAL. We have MORE COAL than Saudi Arabia HAS OIL. Speaking of COAL, Obama said, "Under MY plan, the 'Cap & Trade System', ELECTRICITY rates WOULD NECESSARILY SKYROCKET." *~*~HIS PLAN: ELECTRIC RATES SKYROCKET~*~* WE CAN'T AFFORD HIM OR HIS PLANS! The MOST ACCURATE POLL OF 2004: IBD, John McCain is AHEAD BY 2% among INDEPENDENTS! Don't listen to the lefty Media polls that say Obama is going to win. Go VOTE for McCain: a Hero not a Zero! Why is it every time a tape of Obama contradicting himself GETS LEAKED, he cries, "But it was TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT!"? And of EVERY one of HIS RACIST, TERRORIST, or CRIMINAL associates, Obama says, "He is JUST a guy in MY neighborhood" or "MY kids go to the SAME school as HIS kids" For many many years he has lived in a neighborhood, attended a church & sent his kids to schools FULL OF TERRORISTS, RACISTS & CRIMINALS. I WOULD'VE MOVED. HE DIDN'T. HE'S NOT ABOUT HOPE & CHANGE-- HE'S ABOUT SECRETS & LIES. RUN!

I think Obama does mean that he wants a transition to take place. I think He wants to enforce a change in the energy industry by bankrupting the Coal Industry. He is not going to allow more nuclear or technologies that are cleaner. He is not going to wait for Technology to find a way. He is going to Make US find a way by depriving us of energy. I'm voting for a more candidate who lives in the REAL World. I am Voting McCain.

Because the fact of the matter is is that right now we are getting a lot of our energy from coal. And China is building a coal-powered plant once a week. So what we have to do then is figure out how can we use coal without emitting greenhouse gases and carbon." Posted by: BornHoosier on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:54 PM
There's nothing in Obama's comment related to first inspecting the Coal Plants, and THEN forcing technology updates. He outright does discuss the fact that IT WILL COST THEM - this means they are counting on using the Energy Industry to force more Homeowners to be UNable to keep their homes due to the escalating Utility Bills that they (Obama) can manipulate - remember, Al Gore's energy consumption is $2,500/month (during the summer months alone). Yet, Obama speaks nothing about this gluttony by one of his own Party. This discussion about COAL is also aimed straight at Wall Street, too - if you think otherwise, you are completely lost. You cannot be a supporter and then make such comments. Democrats have ALWAYS made one comment in one State - then traveled elsewhere & spoken just the opposite - telling Voters "what they want to hear" ... like a Used Car Salesman - VOTERS SIMPLY MUST GROW UP - NEVER TRUST THE MEDIA - START DOING YOU OWN HOMEWORK, for Christ's sake!

Did the CD industry bankrupt the Vinal Record industy? No! Just new technology! All he said is that it will cost them more to use out dated technology. John Mc said the same thing in the debate. "So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted." Another show of desperation to scare the people in OHIO...I wonder if they a dumm enough to fail for it?

Obama has not hidden (very well) his true beliefs or his true agenda. Of course the mainstream media has done all in its power to do this for him; but anyone can find ample evidence of Obama's socialist ideology with just a little digging. Unfortunately, Bush backlash, a very weak Republican nominee and an exceedingly uninformed/misinformed mass of voters all combine to make Obama a shoe-in for president tomorrow. If Obama's presidency is accompanied by super majorities in the house and senate, and if he is able to nominate a single supreme court justice, the pain will be great indeed. I hate to say it, but in a sense, America deserves what is coming. I can only hope that a sustained, conservative backlash will be able to undo the damage that we are oh so close to realizing.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.” Obama said, “That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in wind, solar, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches. The only thing that I have said with respect to coal, I haven’t been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.”

Not only will the coal industry go down the tubes, but so will the electricity generating industry. Obama on a continuation of the tape says "Electricity prices will necessarily Skyrocket" sounds like we are are headed for a third world nation status with power rationing and high prices for it. Scary is all I can say.

Posted by: Bob on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:43 PM
he McCain camp is misrepresenting Obama's coal comments. In fact, McCain and Obama hold the same position on coal. What the McCain camp is not giving you from the original tape: Obama: "But this notion of no coal, I think, is an illusion. Because the fact of the matter is is that right now we are getting a lot of our energy from coal. And China is building a coal-powered plant once a week. So what we have to do then is figure out how can we use coal without emitting greenhouse gases and carbon." Obama and Biden on Clean Coal: Develop and Deploy Clean Coal Technology. Carbon capture and storage technologies hold enormous potential to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions as we power our economy with domestically produced and secure energy. As a U.S. Senator, Obama has worked tirelessly to ensure that clean coal technology becomes commercialized. An Obama administration will provide incentives to accelerate private sector investment in commercial scale zero-carbon coal facilities.

Because he makes up a big LIE every time he gets caught being who he truly is, and you buy it hook, line, and sinker. There's an old saying that goes: "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on ME!" Come on people, start using some sense. This guy is a LIAR, a Thug, and is NOT what America needs...especially right now!

Posted by: Derek D on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:38 PM
It is sad but not surprising to hear these comments. If you've heard more than just the individual words, you've probably figured out that Obama's belief is that he should have complete control over wealth, energy and business, and appropriate it as he sees fit. He has also made it clear that those who support him in this will stand to gain and those who do not will lose. If you are ready to turn over your personal wealth and national sovereignty to such a man, all I can say is good luck. Coal provides cheap efficient energy to the significant portion of our population. Losing that is a MUCH MUCH greater threat than CO2 (a life giving gas), or the greatest Socialist-tax-and-subsidy-scam-of-all-time: Global Warming. So while Florida gets frost in October, the All-Entitled one brags about bringing down our most viable energy providers. This is the man and the plan that many Americans seem to think will save us. Now more than ever: God Bless America...PLEASE! We'll need it!!

Hey out there, listen up. I would not care to bet that Obama has never had his hands dirty from coal or anything like that, or from being in a war with all the dirt and grim and emotional turmoil that Senator McCain has. McCain understands the need to keep coal production up and get it up even higher in these rough times. WV, Ohio and Pennsylvania all are willing and ready to accomodate this need. Obama, does not care about coal, our region or our country. He is a Gore wannna be, and is not for us. He is using some more of his poor judgement, but this time it concerns coal, before it was drilling for oil. I am beginning to wonder if gas is also off the table as an option for this nucklehead. The decision is clear. Ohio, WV and Pennsylvania and any other state that produces coal, Vote MCCain 08..God Bless us all, God Bless the USA, God Bless the coal miners and their families. Stand up for coal and for our families, Vote McCain!

They don't complain that life is tough for an african american they live life to it's absolute fullest overcoming obstacles that get in their way. What did white's do for your ancestors except remove them from a war torn tribal land and put them in a land of opportunity. Slavery was wrong on every level but its gone... Get over it and get and education! When you shoot for the bottom step you will hit it every time, shoot for the stars and stop blaming "Whitey" for your problems as you need to look no further than the mirror for your self imposed slavery!

Obama has run a compaign based on seduction and deception and lies, similar to Hitler's rise to power. He's a polarizer, not a unifier. Obama shouldn't even get 10% of the vote. No true patriot, Jew, Christian, member or another faith (except black liberation theology), economist, military person, engineer, cop, capitalist, atheist, housewife, blue collar worker, college student, etc. should give him a vote. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. In other words get ready for a nightmare. Don't rely on the government or even your church for help in time of need. Start preparing. Churches & synagogues not going apostate need to stop any building plans, sell real estate (at a loss) and start stocking up on food and survival items for their members. Larger places of worship need to break up into smaller units.

This man is a fraud. A media invention. I stood in line yaterday with hundreds of chanting, giddy DELUDED obamabots. It was almost unbearable to have to stand there and listen to his name chanted over and over again. I could not WAIT to cast my vote for McCain. And I am a BLACK man! At church, after service all the talk was about obama. I told one of the memebrs that if she showed even one-half the enthusiam for evangelism that she has shown for the Obamanation, maybe our congregation would be growing instead of declining. SHUT HER RIGHT UP!! LOL!!! I told another man that he must have an obession problem. I have never heard him talk about his wife and children with the same ardor that he spews out over the Obamantion. SHUT HIM RIGHT UP! When another member offered me info about the Obamanation, I told her I aleady have a Messiah. The look on her face was PRICELESS!!!! If people still want to vote Obama in WV, KY and southern OH after this, you must be stupid!!! These areas of the country are already impoverished enough! What kind of good paying jobs can you get in our area of the country? Coal mining is one of the major industries in the area. Can the Tri-state deal with this type of job loss. WV has already lost tons of young people to NC, GA and Cinncinati and Columbus...imagine what would be left...You think your state is poor now...it will only get worse. Businesses will close, kids will move out of schools because their parents can't find work. There will be nothing left and WV will have to find some other way of attracting more people in. Can we afford this? Besides you complain now about gas and electric bills, do you realize that electricity requires the use of coal? 50% of electricity's power comes from coal. Can you imagine the price of next years utility bills!!! Obama is only for himself, not Joe the plumber or Joe the Coal Miner

Yet another issue that will likely be passed over by the media & much of the American public who are Brain Washed by Obama et. al. I've been trying to have rational discourse about Obama's radical views and lack of experience with a bright, educated older sibling who just can't see the forest through the trees. All she sees is the nice, clean campaign he's run, how bad Bush has been, and what a great speaker Barry is (when it's scripted & planned). She's been brain washed by our media and generic O to the point that it is scary. There are dozens of reasons not to vote for Obama, this coal issue just being one more. People like my big sis, you have 24-hours to wake up! HELLO?

I have read all the comments here and listened to and read the interview. He does not intend to end coal production. People in our state wonder why the rest of the country looks at us like idiots, this is the reason. YOU will believe anything that is told to you two days before the election. Can you seriuosly think this is not a repeat of 8 years ago? Do whatever it takes to get elected. What about the President's push to get regulations changed before he leaves office so it will benefit him and Cheney after they leave? Oh I forgot that is ok. I was driving to Logan County and I saw the dumbest sign ever. IF you want to vote for McCain, do it because you believe in his positions on matters, not that he has stated him, but don't vote for him because you believe the lies about Obama. That is what is wrong with our state and country. My father was a coal miner for 40 years, coal supported our family and I can promise you that he would vote for OBAMA if he were alive.

Has anyone noticed the third and fourth sentences of this article. "Sunday, comments resurfaced from a taped interview Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama did with the San Francisco Chronicle in January. In the interview, which has been available online for months, Obama talks about the importance of coal." They so clearly show how completely the press has fallen down on the job when it comes to Barack Obama. The really scary part is that if they'd been doing their jobs this information would have been publicized long before now, not after a great many people have already voted. What a sham the mainstream media has become!

Posted by: Cindy on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:29 AM
Actually, he would be helping you (for example, here in Florida, we won't allow any new coal plants period already - this is already the status quo under George Bush's presidency - duh - and clean coal might help us change our minds). This is what Obama actually said: >>But this notion of no coal, I think, is an illusion. Because the fact of the matter is is that right now we are getting a lot of our energy from coal. And China is building a coal-powered plant once a week. So what we have to do then is figure out how can we use coal without emitting greenhouse gases and carbon.<<

He is quated as saying, "If somebody wants to build a coal power plant they can, it's just that it will bankrupt them because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted". his campaign's spin is that they are referring to using old coal technology. So are they trying to say that all the new coal factories are going to be using "old" technology? C'mon, everyone knows that he would scarp the coal as well as oil industry, just so we would be forever tied to mideast oil, and the problems that come with it.

Coming from a large coal driven industry yourself, you might want to direct your comment to the good people of Kentucky. The polls show that McCain is winning the state. However, these little comments of Obama's that keep being rehashed only show his lack of forsight politically. He does NOT have any real leadership experience and he wants to make the decisions that will shape not just our lives, but the direction of our entire country in its place in the world. I'm an independent, but I assure you that I'm voting McCain tomorrow. I like my rights and do NOT want a president, who will be more than likely naming Supreme Court Justice(s), to start picking apart the ones he doesn't like. With a democratic President, democratic house and a predominately democratic Court, where will the checks and balances be then? People really better think before they cast their ballot. This election is about far more than merely taxes. McCain's health care bill would never pass in the house. VOTE

Posted by: sloagm on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:11 AM
The rebuttal by the Obama camp is silly. They say that he is a coal supporter and wants to transition to new coal technology. Well, what exactly would a brand new coal-fired electrical facility be using? 1930s technology? No, it would be using new technology, so the idea that he is talking about old vs. new is either misleading or irrelevant. It appears he is talking about coal-fired electricity generation, not coal extraction itself. However, if his goal is to erradicate the U.S. of coal-based electricity, then yes, the result will be the bankruptcy of the domestic coal industry. If that is the endgame he'll probably put export taxes on coal so nobody else can use it either and domestic producers will be put out of business.

You know, I orginally thought that we were at a point in our country's history where Obama offered the fresh new leadership our country needed to get us back on the right track. I must admit, however, that the more I learn about the man and all that has been hidden from the public by the media that is CLEARLY in the tank for him(that's actually another shameful issue that the press will have to come to grips with), the more I have become convinced that his election will mean the desctruction of all that has made this country great. His plan is wonderful if you currently do not contribute to society, pay taxes, hold down a job, etc. because these people will be better off. But anyone who is employed, regardless of what you make, hang onto your wallets. And don't think your retirement account is safe either. For these reasons, I did something last Friday that I never remotely thought was a possibility six months ago....I voted for John McCain.

I agree with incentives to move to better solutions, but this is absurd. They guy is like an idealistic college student! Same with his ridiculous statements about instating a "civilian" force. I know everybody hates Bush, but do you really want to run to such an extreme? A two year Senator, who spent those 2 years running for President! Please! Once there, he will crush America with his Islamic views, his terrorist beliefs and his apathy towards the United States or the world for that matter. He believes what his followers are saying, that he IS the Mesiah. Obama, you are an Obamanation to God Himself and to the Lord Jesus. You wonder how all of this is happening? Try this ... it is the end times where God says in the Bible, that He will pour out his Holy Spirit on some but most will be blind to the truth. Does Obama realize that almost all of the power plants (non-nuclear) in the U.S. use coal to heat the boilers, that create steam to run the turbines, to give us electricity? I think not, or he wouldn't be so quick to bankrupt the coal industry. For the U.S., coal means electricity, and electricity means.....well, you know, you count the ways we use it.

He wants to shut down the coal industry, and he wants your electricity bill to go up *dramatically*. His vision of America is basically everyone living in a hut like his brother in Kenya.

Even the other day after spending millions on ads telling the people why lowering taxes on Corperations was bad he said in an interview he might have to lower them (thank god he relizes this if elected but still!). What sent the US into the depression following the stock market crash? Raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations and putting up tariffs and following the ideals of protectionism. What do the Dems favor to get our economy back on track. THE VERY SAME IDEAS. Now he wants to bankrupt the coal industry.. this guy is NUTZ!

If I pay more taxes it will not hurt me but it will hurt all those I currently give my business. We had planned a 30,000 landscaping job in the spring that I will no longer be able to give to the landscaper. He will not be able to hire his crew, the plant seller will not sell his plants. The state will not get their sales tax. We currently eat out at restaurants and tip very nicely. We will be cutting back on eating out which will hurt the restaurant owners, the waiters/waitress that rely on people eating out and no sale tax. We will not take our ski trip in Colorado which means the ski resort loses out, their employees, the hotels and again the lack of sales tax. It will not hurt us to cut back but when everyone cuts back it will hurt the economy. My friends said they will they will cut back. What jobs will the govt provide?

the coal industry need to be shut down forever. there's more than plenty of cleaner cheaper (if not free)sources of energy. the technology is out there. but unfortunaletly i all about big money and big corporations...

I can't believe that someone thinks that the GOP is lying to the people while Obama is a speaker of truth. One of Obama's ads states that "McCain wants to reduce taxes for his friends in big companies," and that "this will do nothing for the middle class." Business NEVER pays taxes, because any imposed tax is a cost of doing business and must be covered by the sale of their product or service. Higher taxes on business will either cause prices to rise, reduce quality for the product or service, or cause the business to lay off employees. There are no other options. Higher business taxes in this country also cause the US businesses to be less competitive with those of other countries, and thus also pressure the businesses to leave the US. So it stands to reason that a lower business tax is essentially an "embedded" tax reduction for ALL. Either Obama is ignorant of these facts, or he is lying to everyone. I happen to believe the latter. NoBama '08

It's all about fear and scare tactics, STILL, even after 9-11. Read what both McCain and Obama's energy policies are before you start name calling like the repubs like to do. It doesn't mean you will have no coal jobs. It's the opposite. Clean coal technology jobs will be added!!! Obama will do much more than drill, baby, drill. Read their platforms and see who you agree with. If you voted for Hillary in the primary, I can guarantee you it ain't John McCain.

I'm extremely confident that most WV, KY and OH democrats are smarter than this. We may have put up with some compromising situations in times past just to preserve party loyalty, but now the integrity of the party itself is starting to wobble. We're all beginning to finally recognize that this is NOT the democrat party of our parents' and grandparents' generation. It defies everything that they stood for. I always said that my granddad would roll over in his grave if I voted Republican, but I think now he would be the first to tell me that, I didn't leave the democrat party, it left ME. I don't necessarily agree with everything on the Republican end either, but I'll not use my vote to allow these liberal nuts to hijack the White House with principles and philosophies that go against my very core beliefs. So Obama and Biden, I guess I'll just cling to my guns, my God, and my COAL. There are a few of us who still believe that way even if we're registered Democrats.

Did you even read Obama's 'actual' comments? He said he would enforce stricter regulations on mining and processing coal. I thought that's what West Virginia wanted? If the coal companies don't tighten up, Obama will enpose fines that may bankrupt them. All they have to do is measure up to the regulation and coal will continue to be mined. West Virginia: Do you want the global warming greenhouse gases produce? Or, do you want clean coal production?

I feel sorry for democrats... they've been indoctrinated since elementary school. They can't help that it's in their programming to push these destructive people to the top of our political system. Obama is not unlike the wizard of oz - you can only see the guy in front of the pillars, not the true guy behind the curtain. If Obama is elected, the responsible hardworking people of America will be screwed while those who take gov't entitlements will thrive... until the wealth is gone, then we'll be like any other 3rd world country. Thanks Obama, Pelosi, and Reid for the bright future you're about to lead us to...

What is remarkable, Joe Biden knew of the alias Hussein Obama's plan and he is always saying he is from the coal mining working class of Scranton Pa. We need energy alternatives and we need jobs. If Obama destroys the coal mining industry he will put more than 1.5 million families on welfare and without proper training to find new employment. What is further dusgusting is that the union leaders led us to believe the alias Obama would protect our jobs and families! It's time to get joe biden off the gravy train of which he has rode for 36 years and will get $164,000 a month in retirement from Congress, and he has never been a class worker, after cillege and law school he went straight to Congress and now he gets a $164K a month retirement? Most of us real workers would never achieve that amount for a month even if we worked 72 years! NoObama and no Biden. Makes you wonder wht b

More of the Obama interview... "The only thing I've said with respect to coal, I haven't been some coal booster. What I have said is that FOR US TO TAKE COAL OFF THE TABLE as a (sic) ideological matter AS OPPOSED TO SAYING if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it." The person who will raise taxes on the majority of working WV people is McCain, especially if you receive health care benefits, he plans to tax that as income while continuing cuts for the richest. Check his stances out. Oh yeah and he still wants to put SS in the hands of Wall Street. Under repub leadership we have the biggest economic mess ever, the last time it came close was 87, again under repubs. As a licensed engineer having worked in heavy industry for over 20 years, I can tell you that the plan proposed by the democrat party is both misleading and impossible. You can't have it both ways - you want zero CO2 emission, or do you want to use domestic energy sources? The technology available today to convert renewable energy sources *cannot even come close* to supplying the power needs of the United States. Coal will suppy the needs of the US for decades, but CO2 is a by-product of its use. Nuclear is the *ONLY* source that can actually meet the power demands of the US with available technology and emits *zero atmospheric byproduct*. Anyone proposing anything else is simply delusional.

This time is no different. Just like Obama said this power hungry republican party does not want to change America why would they? The way they have control over this country now & the last 8yrs. has made them all millionaires if not billionaires .I for one resent them insulting my intelligence. How about you? Just more diversions from the real issues is what the republican party is all about. Shaking hands with one hand while stabbing you in the back with the other...& smiling all the while. West Virginians beware. Look at these facts about the coal industry. And Obama wants them to go BANKRUPT: - More than half of the nation's electricity is generated from coal. - In West Virginia 99% of the generated electricity comes from coal. - There are currently 14 coal fired electric generating facilities located in West Virginia. - Coal provides the majority of electric power in 32 states. - In the United States, the demand for electricity has increased 136% since 1970. - National demand for electricity is expected to increase by another 24 percent by 2020. - Emissions from power plants have been reduced by 1/3 over the past 30 years. - It has been estimated that 13 percent of the national power requirement is taken up by activities associated with computers and information technology. - Taxes paid by the coal industry and by utility companies that make electricity using West Virginia coal account for two-thirds, or over 60% of business taxes pa

Interesting how his campaign restates his position in a completely different way. He said nothing at all about "new technology" he said "it will bankrupt them" because of the fines for emissions. Why has this guy made it this far when his campaign is so blatant about lying? Why have the American people let this go this far?

Man made global warming is a proven hoax, bad science! CO2's created by man are trace amounts. Why are the Democrocrats and many Republicans so eager for the U.S. to become a third world country. It isn't GM, GE, Ford, or any other manufacturers fault they can't compete it's our governments fault. Nobody wants dirty water and skies and as technology grows so will the ability to produce in a cleaner setting, but tech can't be legislated by elected officials of which many sole careers are lawyers. Wake up America before we are no more. We are not evil we are good and the things we have given the world have improved more lives than any other society in history. Freedom.

Posted by: JR on Nov 3, 2008 at 08:03 AM
This isn't "republican spin". This sentence alone explains everything: "So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted." I think that's pretty clear and doesn't need any further explanation. Now I'm sure that the Obama campaign is going to try to spin like a top about this and the sheeple are going to nod their collective heads and vote for him anyway. Because it's only about being a Democrat, it's not about who the man actually is. That never mattered. Not to him, not to his supporters, not to the media. Woe to all of us that work for a living. Think that the numbers pan out? They don't. So the bar will continue to be lowered until his programs are funded and none of us have very much left. The American dream is dead as we knew it. Hail Obama, the socialist king. Thought that we left England and threw tea in the harbor for that.

Obama may be from a coal state but the coal portion of that state is Southern Illinois. The Chicago Land area of Illinois does not care about the Sourthern portion of the state. Southern Illinois is consistantly ignored by the state government. I have been saying the same thing that Obama has just said which is that an Obama Presidency will put all of the coal minners out of business; we will no longer be able to use coal as an energy resource; this will cause us to rely even more on foreign entergy as he does not like nuclear or domestic drilling either.

Just because you are register one or the other you do not have to vote that way. If everybody would watch Fox news you would then know who to vote for. The biggest and the most important thing I have to say is GOD HELP THE UNITED STATES IF OBAMA GETS ELECTED PRESIDENT.

Obama has lied all along... he wants to bankrupt the coal power plant for greenhouse gasses HOW ABOUT THE GASSES HIS JET IS EMITTED EVERYTIME HE FLIES and waves his little greedy hand to all those sick Americans waiting to see him... waiting to give him your donation... you will wake up and see HE IS NOT THE CHOSEN ONE.... WHEN IT IS TO LATE... and he wants to take our guns away to so you can not defend your self from the thugs that is taking over right along with him.....

Posted by: Floss on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:34 AM
I heard the tape and he did say his plan would bankrupt the Coal Industry now why would any political candidate want to bankrupt any business in the USA. Should any American be comfortable with that attitude?

Posted by: tommy richards on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:33 AM
NO OBAMA - to all you idiots and mental midgets thinking about voting for this commie-centric pied piper, he's a marxist and dislikes regular Americans. you'd better think seriously before pulling the lever!

I wish someone would explain to me why they would vote Obama. In all seriousness, between his "spread the wealth" statement, his call for higher taxation, his Wright/Ayers etc. connections, his "guns and religion" statement, his comments about a "civilian military force" and now this with the coal - WHY would ANYONE vote for this man who is out to completely destroy our country?

Posted by: Janet on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:32 AM
Remember that Shelley Moore Capito kept US in mind and voted NO to the bailout TWICE. I'm voting for her.

Posted by: Mom on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:32 AM
I have ask this before. But am saying it again. If the election were held the day after 9/11 would the American people still be voting for Obama? I cannot beleive how some have been brainwashed by this man.God help us all.I pray people will open their eyes before they go vote.God bless America!

Obama is just a dangerous liberal, that with higher taxes, will create higher unemployment. Jimmy Carter proved this fact.

Byrd and Rockefeller look out for Byrd and Rockefeller. To hell with the rest of us. I really don't like McCain, but he's getting my vote. The alternative is far worse.

Posted by: sDee on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:22 AM
This is unbelievably irresponsible Odamam is dangerous and the media is covering his true extreme liberal agenda. Another quote from the interview where he plans to soak the America people after he bankrupts Coal mining and power industry: “You know, when I was asked earlier about the issue of coal, you know — under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad. Because I’m capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it — whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.” more here: http://www.poligazette.com/2008/11/02/obama-ill-cause-energy-prices-to-skyrocket/

Now, if you want to talk about nasty "dirt" and stuff like that , just wait until that judge releases the tape of Sara Palin and the two guys . America hasn't seen anything yet .

I am not scared of CHANGE, I WELCOME IT, and with Obama ther will be change, we pray to GOD its for better!

All I can say is wow ! Shocked no, look at the lack of coverage on Obama's statements like The "Constitution is a negative limiting document" (1992 NPR Chicago interview) I live in a state devastated by job loss. So Obama's solution is to increase job loss and in increase energy costs, increase activists judges at Federal levels, increase spending and increase taxes This change that is not needed and certain to lead to two decades of decline.

Posted by: Greg on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:08 AM
I tell you, there was a time when I was starting to believe what Obama was saying. I was falling under his spell. But the more I find out about him, the more I realize it's just all smoke and mirrors. The guy is totally inexperienced. There's a reason Europe and the rest of the world wants him to be elected--they want a weaker America. And he'll provide it. Back away from the fact that he's a great speaker (he is) and judge him objectively. He is an empty suit that reads a teleprompter. He has NO good ideas. This appears to all be just his thirst for power. I think McCain is a bad choice, too, but he's a heck of a lot better than this guy. Not all change is good. I prefer a little gridlock in Washington...there's something to be said for that. Vote McCain this time. If Obama truly is as wonderful as everyone thinks, let him gain some experience in the Senate and see who he REALLY is. Once we see proof of his leadership, let him run again in 12-20 years. He needs wisdom.

Obama is a supporter of so called "clean coal" technology. He's saying in the quote that by using a system of pollution credits.. building an old fashioned NEW coal plant would be prohibitively expensive BUT if the plant was built using clean coal or carbon abatement technologies it would be fine. That way it steers the industry towards building new plants with the clean coal technology that the coal industry, John McCain, Rush Limbaugh, and Barack Obama have all promoted over the last few years.

This comment by Obama could cost him the election...which means of course we won't hear anything more about it other than here on the internet. Not a chance it will get in the major network TV media. Unfortunately there are too many of these stories on Obama that would make this election more fair, but the media is covering it up. Journalism will never have the respect it once had.

Too bad the campaign is about to end. The longer we wait, the more we (finally!) learn about Obama. It's beyond me how anyone can vote for a presidential candidate whose claim to fame is being a disruptive community activist and a short term senator who is greatly unappreciated by a majority of citizens from his own state of Illinois. We know he is guilty of the following: wants to bankrupt the coal industry; wants to change the Constitution of the United States; wants to take over our 401K's; wants to 'change' the welfare programs already in place; wants to give social security to illegals...including his aunt, no doubt; wants to rid his campaign of news writers who don't support him; wants to refuse interviews with broadcasters who ask the wrong questions; wants to 'change' the world; wants to increase our taxes; wants to reduce military spending by 25%; wants to make those who disagree with him feel guilty; wants to be associated with and be like questionable people such as Aryes, Wright, Ferrican; wants to let his family members live poor lives; and on and on. And how come we have to show our birth certificate to get drivers licenses? His is 'sealed'! I can't imagine Obama's painting hanging alongside George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, or Thomas Jefferson, just to name a few. None of the nationally-respected financial analysts have endorsed him. It's beyond me why anyone would vote for such a questionable, far-left liberal. Dear God help us, please!

Wake-up people - if it walks like a socialist, talks like a socialist, it is a socialist!!!!!! We are a capitalist society. The only government-funded "socialist" program should be free daycare for the disadvantaged. Then, they could get a job (mandated) like everyone else and not rely on this as their reason not to work unless they are disabled. Can't wait to hear if Obama's aunt who lives here illegally has VOTED YET???? She has donated to his campaign and been to his rallies. Yet, he doesn't seem to know how to get in touch with her!!!!!! The other heavy industries in the US will also suffer if Electricity Prices Skyrocket Also hard hit will be the American STEEL industry, and the American ALUMINUM industry. These industries will continue their flight overseas, taking with them lots of good jobs. There are dozens of other American industries that rely upon low cost electricity to survive. Obama's plan will kill those industries too. And when the coal jobs are gone from PA, and WV, and Ohio, a lot of other support jobs will be lost as well. Same for the support industries for the steel industry. And that doesn't even consider the restaurants, insurance agencies, real estate agents, hardware stores, auto parts stores, tire stores, dress shops, and lots of other local businesses that will be put out of business when the coal, steel, and aluminum jobs disappear. And that doesn't consider the impact on housing prices, schools, and residential electric rates. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hdi4onAQ

Are all the rest of you commenting on this really that blind? Obama is talking about the need to pursue cleaner technologies, including cleaner coal fired plants. Under a plan to auction CO2 emmisions by unit, a traditional coal fired plant would emit so many units that it would be too expensive to run...so the plant would be forced to pursue a cleaner method or face bankrupcy. Any of you ignorant enough to think that the future president really wants to bankrupt an important US industry are too dumb to cast an informed vote anyway. This is simply one more instance were the McCain campaign has taken something out of context to distract from the real issues and smear Obama.

Posted by: Krish on Nov 3, 2008 at 03:05 AM
Obama is talking about imposing a carbon tax on the coal industry when he says they are going to be charged a huge sum. Yes, of course, some coal industries may go bankrupt, but how are you going to get people to change to producing renewable energy and put the money on renewable energy production if you are still in the age-old greenhouse gase generating fossil fuel business?

Posted by: Larry on Nov 3, 2008 at 02:49 AM
These remarks by Obama show an astounding ignorance. People involved in the power generation industry know that the immediate future REQUIRES base load capacity from both coal and nuclear. The most optimistic projections for supplemental energy sources (wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, etc.) is 20%. It seems that one of Obama's changes for the country will be an increasing number of brownouts and blackouts. As do all communists, this one thinks that he has all the answers, and that his answers should be impressed upon everyone else. McCain may not be the best choice for President, but at least he stands with our Founding Fathers in support of individualism and self-responsibility.

Of course Obama is speaking about old business models vs. new business models, but fear is keeping people from acknowledging the reality behind his statements and the awful impulses at work behind the distortion of them. Obama represents the future and is headed for victory. Listening to the people who brought us two terms of George W. Bush is like watching passengers bail out their sinking lifeboat with teaspoons. Free advice: embrace the change and do what you can to make it work! Otherwise a future of anger and bitterness awaits you.

I understand The campaign for Republican presidential candidate John McCain aren't very intelligent but you'd think they could process simple English. Obama understands Coal is the backbone of the US wealth and supplies most of its energy needs. You just have to develop clean-burning technology for producing energy. And make the mines safer for coal miners! My father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were coal miners from Scotland, came to America in 1912. I've been down a deep shaft more than once in my life, and it takes a special kind of person to go down into hell.

Ladies and gentlemen we can choose to keep depending on coal to support this state or we can choose to find other valuable resources to build this states ecconomy upon. This in no way means we dont respect what coal has done in this state, country, and world. It just means we are willing to accept that the future of this state lies elsewhere! Voting for Obama is not a vote against coal, but a vote for a future initially secured by our coal resources until new alternative fuels can be created more ecconomically. It is time we look ahead!

I have never been "afraid" of a political candidate in my life, but I am terrified of an Obama presidency. In his book, Obama made it a point to say that he carefully chose his friends, so I take him at his word. Someone who carefully chooses their friends ends up with close associations with known terrorist William Ayers (Obama wrote a forward for one of Ayers' books and Ayers hosted a party for Obama at his house) and Jeremiah Wright (remember Wright called America: US of KKKA) as a pastor for 20 years? Rezko, et al . . . Obama couldn't even pass the security requirements to be a Secret Service Agent based on his ties, but we want him for President? I feel like the people who show up at these rallies have been enticed with grandiose speeches, but they do not know who Obama truly is. The mainstream media did more research on "Joe the Plumber" in one week than they have done on Obama's entire presidential run. Please pray for this county and vote for McCain!!!!!!

Yes, Obama is for the blue collar folks! Hope, Change! Have the little bumpkins left the room? Hello my esteemed friends he in SF, Coal? no way, we'll put those coal miners on unemployment and then recruit them for my new Civilian National Security Force! Wake up folks, this guy, Pelosi, Reid, and Obama appointed judges are going to be the Four Horseman to our economic strength & freedom. Well intentioned or not, it is the results that matter. His economic views are frightening

only thing worse than a redneck is a republican redneck! John Grasping AT Straws McCain is going down as the most frantic campaigner in history for pulling out all the BS he can muster and the good cop/bad cop thing he had going wasn't even working so he threw in that towel too. If he had just "stayed the course" a little longer on any one of his many tactics (or strategies) perhaps educated voters would be more inclined to fall for his antics. Truth told, if we don't change our ways, we will get stomped on by the bigger bullies in this world!Obama change we can BELIEVE IN!

Once again if you take ant words and take them out of context you can make them say and mean anything you want. Now the trick for the American people is to research on their own and not to rely on politicians to tell us what others are saying and meaning. I have heard Obama say many times that CLEAN coal technology is needed to help wean us from oil. He is from Illinois which is a coal producing state but we are to lazy to figure that out. So I will tell you he is not against coal or he would not be a Senator from a coal producing state. Now would he?

Posted by: Dave on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:17 AM
If any of you in the coal industry are voting for "change", you're almost guaranteed to get your wish. There's a good chance you'll be getting a change in your employment status. . . . . . . Look at the bright side, you'll have some spare time to catch up on those home repairs you've been putting off and you'll get a nice little tax break on that unemployment check.

This Obama character:where did he come from? Who is he? Why is he qualified or allowed to threaten to bankrupt an industry?

Posted by: William Hawks on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:14 AM
The McCain campaign is once again distorting Obama's message. Even more remarkable going back to January to do so. Will a President McCain take 9 to 10 months to deal with any "3 AM emergency calls " ? Obviously, McCain's campaign which travels on negative political ads seems to lack the ability to spend much research time finding information on his political opponent which has been available to the public for many months. McCain and his campaign staff are obviously slow and lazy. If their example of operating the White House is the same as their campaign work , then a McCain presidency would be incapable of dealing with any national crisis to occur on their watch.

Obama is going to bankrupt this entire nation. His positions and policies will stunt our economy and keep us dependent on foreign oil. He is too elite and indifferent to help America become stronger during this critical time.

Posted by: libertarian on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:11 AM

The goal of these Democrat Communists is to bankrupt the USA to make us equally poor as the rest of the Socialist world. They stopped the drilling in Alaska 7 years ago and started the big oil price increases and they gave away loans to people who couldn't repay them with the intent of destroying the banks. The welfare state is an upside down pyramid, the point is the people paying taxes the top heavy base is the welfare, disability, and government payroll. The pyramid will topple and all hell will break loose.

Come on folks, Senator Obama is not about WV or its citizens. He is all about the power and growing Big Government. I continue to be amazed by this debate, he's really done nothing but get elected to the Senate and then begin his run for the White House. We can't afford him and his tax and spend friends on the left.

Posted by: Bob on Nov 2, 2008 at 11:55 PM
To those of you who are "blaming" the republicans for bringing this up at the end of the game, well the truth of the matter is, they didn't do their homework early enough in the campaign or this would have been out sooner for the most impact. However, they can't talk about what doesn't exist and cleary, Barack Obama made these comments, he gave them the ammunition, they did not fabricate it. Further, in this same interview, he also warns that under his policies, energy prices for consumers, particularly electricity, will soar. So, for those of you who depend on coal plants to earn a living, not only will your job be in danger, it will be increasingly more difficult for you to afford power to your home. I'm not sure how much more we need to hear from Obama's own lips to convince us that his "change" is not the right "change" for our country. It would not be wise for any potential POTUS to devise plans to bankrupt any industry, especially without offering an alternate source of jobs...

Posted by: Bill on Nov 2, 2008 at 11:55 PM
so Obama was taken out of context...yeah right! despite wanting to get rid of coal, he said (lied) in the debates that he was for coal. Let me hazzard a guess, despite this revelation, the coal workers unions and associated union will still vote for this marxist socialist. guess I will have to be "selfish" and "cling to my guns and faith"

It will be a sad, sad day when they swear Obama in as President. Will he swear on a bible or the kouran? He doesn't care about the poor people, by poor I mean not a rich man like him. He travels in rich circles. Both he & his pompus wife look down on all of us. Now if you are Oprah or some other entertainer, then you are A-ok. He cares nothing about WV or the people in it. We are a poor state and he definitely doesn't want coal mining. We'll see how well the mine companies do after he is elected. He is our saviour, he is going to make everything right. People wake up and think hard before you vote on Tuesday, but, GO Vote!

Obama stupid? Didn't Sarah Palin say that it violated her 1st Amendment rights to have the media question her speach? Didn't she also think prank callers were the President of France. Obama a meglomaniac? Doesn't John McCain say "I know what to do, I know how to do thus and so?" Why won't he tell us what he plans to do? Because his EGO is so BIG thath doesn't think that he has to. Tax cuts for the rich worked when their taxes were too high, but I have yet to have a Republican explain how when Clinton raised the top marginal rate the economy grew and jobs were create. Yet, when Bush cut taxes the economy stagnated and jobs were lost. But hey, $600 billion was redistributed to the rich. In addition to being the same on policy, Bush and McCain both benefited from their fathers' and grandfathers' goverment and military positions. Talk about communism. It is McCain and Bush who believe in only having a lower class and the ruling class. McCain is the liar. Palin is a fraud.

I don't know who will win on Tuesday but when the dust settles the biggest loser will be the media. It's incredible that Obama's coal comments, made in Jamuary, have been kept from the voters until now. What else is the press holding back?

Posted by: WakeUp on Nov 2, 2008 at 11:45 PM
Folks - wake up or lose your country. The mainstream media are totally corrupt, otherwise Obama would have zero chance. He IS a Socialist, and has no love for the idea of a Free and Prosperous America. The "change" he wants is to undermine the Constitution, Capitalism, Freedom and - last but not least - the sovereignty of America. If we had a fair press Obama would be asked if he would be willing to repudiate Socialsim, and he'd respond with the Mother of all Spin.

I work in a coal fired power plant and needless to say I am extremely scared of this man (Obama). I have been worried about him for a long time now, and everything that continues to be revealed about him just drives home the point that he will be bad for America. I just can't believe that any rational person could take an honest look at Obama's "accomplishments" and cast a vote for him.

Posted by: Jim on Nov 2, 2008 at 11:34 PM
I wouldn't get too outraged by Obama's statements. John McCain has the same policy regarding "cap and trade" policies for carbon emissions including those from coal plants, http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues/da151a1c-733a-4dc1-9cd3-f9ca5caba1de.htm.

At present, no one is building anything in the USA, from coal fired plants to new home starts, thanks to the financial panic, which Wall Street caused by selling near worthless securities by the trillions worldwide. Palin should stick to stories about Joe the unlicensed plumber and his plans to start an unlicensed plumbing business (probably with off the book workers).

If one reads any of the accounts of the early unionization efforts in our country one will see similar comments being spoken about Obama today. Some of the headlines described the union movement as seditious, lawless, etc. Today I'm sure West Virginia's miners are glad for their union even though it is very much a socialist and anti-capitalist institution. What would really be wrong with the workers of the world owning the factories and sharing the wealth instead of getting a wage while one or two get rich? If you thought hard about it I bet you would find the idea appealing.

Posted by: sara on Nov 2, 2008 at 11:23 PM
Democrats are into financial schemes that bankrupt America (defeat Capitalism). They created the housing crash by using private banks and their low income housing program. They will join the folly of charging for carbon and bankrupt our energy companies.

Posted by: MrObvious on Nov 2, 2008 at 11:20 PM
Y'all just don't get it. This interview was done last January but the Obama loving media did not jump on it. They do not want you to know the truth about Obama because they support him. Everything is not some sort of Republican conspiracy. Obama has said so many radical things on camera that nothing has to be made up. Of course his campaign hoped that you'd not hear about all of Obama's loony ideas until AFTER the election. Vote Early, wonder why the Dems are pushing that? LOL

Posted by: PAvoter on Nov 2, 2008 at 11:20 PM
OK, please, please, please do your research, people, and stop relying on Palin's speeches and smear ads to form your oh-so-uninformed opinions! McCain ALSO supports a cap and trade system for carbon emissions! So Obama's and McCain's policies about this are pretty much the same. McCain's plan, just like Obama's, would cap coal (and, yes, coal jobs), too. So before you start blasting Obama, realize that McCain has said he believes in doing the same thing...even if he plays the hypocrite and chooses to smear Obama for sharing his beliefs! And, for the record, the coal miners are onto McCain, who calls himself a so-called "coal booster." Check this out from the United Mine Workers of American (UMWA) -- http://www.umwa.org/index.php?q=compac/real-mccain-record-coal. I rest my case!

The coal industry is as sleazy as it gets: literally destroying West Virginia from top to bottom, criminally lobbying the nations public utility commissions to "super size" your energy rates, super heating the atmosphere with CO2 and baking the planet, while all the while asphyxiating the rest of us killing 10,000's of people year in places like Ohio, and of course causing childhood asthma rates that are off the charts. There are some truly @!%!@%!@ fools in this country still desperately clinging to the the Republican party (that would be GOP for those in place like Oregon where they are afraid to even go by the name Republican). It is time to take the trash out; after 8 years it stinks to high #@%#@!! These fools need to be in prison..

Yeah, that no good Obama putting the environment and Americans health first really stinks. So I guess that demographic is going McCain, and it's a pretty big Demo.

Within the last hour, the San Francisco Chronicle has pointed out that Sarah Palin was once again duped--this time by a conservative blogger site. Her comments about Obama's comments on the coal industry are untrue (is that surprising?) Please get the true story from the Chronicle's site: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/b/a/2008/11/02/nov05election-lies_half_truth_2.DTL Within this link are further links to the complete interview and have been available online for over 10 months. No one is hiding anything (except maybe some of Palin's advisors who led her down the primrose path on this issue--again, what else is new?). Here's the full interview, available online to anyone (for the last 10 or 11 months! Some liberal media conspiracy, huh??): http://cdn.sfgate.com/blogs/sounds/sfgate/chroncast/2008/01/17/20080117-obama-interview.mp3 What he actually said (paraphrased) was: the idea that we can go with a "no coal" option is an ILLUSION. So the alternative is to figure out how to make it a clean energy source and if we do that, we have no alternative but to pursue it. But for coal-powered plants that emit pollutants, there will be a severe penalty that will be used to finance research into clean-coal technologies (among other alternative energy sources). In fact, listening to the entire interview is a fascinating, thoughtful, and impressive look at the mind of Senator Obama. Well worth the hour! Thanks to Sarah, listening to the entire interview will likely convince others to vote Obama (remember, these are his positions from last January--and remarkably consistent with his positions today). Again, thanks Sarah for pointing out this remarkable interview that has been publicly available for most of the entire year. But you wouldn't try to mislead us this close to the election, would you??

Its only coming out now because the tape of the interview just surfaced. The "reporters" had deleted the part where Obama says he will tax the coal industry out of existence because they knew it would kill him as a candidate. Listen to the tape, its very important, its your jobs and livelihood thats in deadly danger. Call and send the tape to everyone you know, this is something the MSM will suppress if they can.

That's a disingenuous interpretation of what Obama was saying. Funny how they can't quote what he said without adding, subtracting or changing words to cast what he said in a false light. Eat those lies up you conservatives. If you win, you'll come to enjoy your just deserts in the same way you blindly voted for Bush. The only reason this has not come out before is because the MSM has been so in the tank for Obama. Obama's so called "green jobs" will all have to be paid for by the tax payers. Coal, Oil and Nuclear Power jobs will pay for themselves and create 100s of thousands of new jobs. Obama is on the record against drilling for new oil, coal and nuclear power. Obama wants us all to go back to the stone age and live in the dark. Remember what Obama said. And FYI, in case you were wondering, I voted Clinton in the primaries and will be voting Obama in the election.

How will anyone lose their mining jobs from a possible plant that has yet to be built bankrupting a coal company. If they just follow the clean air technology and not pollute they can build all they want. Some of you are truly morons. Why would you want a dirty coal plant? Those are for China. Remember all of the fuss about the pollution in China during the Olympics? That is the reality of dirty coal technology. And some of you complain about abortion. How many kids will destroying the ozone kill?

I am voting on three issues: abortion, homosexuality, and future judges. Obama fails to pass the 'smell' test on these issues. NObama.

Yes THANK YOU WSAZ for covering this story. Media outlets in WV would take a serious hit from such a idiotic policy. When our miners can't work and our coal plants can't produce electricity feasibly, the consumers in our region can't spend, so there would be no reason for companies to advertise on WSAZ.

Posted by: TuxGuys on Nov 2, 2008 at 10:27 PM
You know, I haven't made up my mind yet... my issues are essentially lower taxes, less government regulation, and national security... if B. Hussein Obama has successfully convinced me by election day that he's the best guy for these issues, he's got my vote.

Posted by: Paul on Nov 2, 2008 at 10:26 PM
I don't know why you McCain supporters think this is so bad because McCain supports such policies. It is called cap and trade and since coal plants cause the most pollution they would have to buy numerous credits to operate - which would hence bankrupt them (or make it unprofitable for them to operate). So sad you are all grasping at straws.

This type of thing is exactly why Obama has been urging people to vote early. The Obama camp knows the media is on their side but they also know there are some journalists left that will get the truth out. Obama wants people to vote before they learn the truth about him. I'm glad I decided to hold off until Tuesday. My vote is going to McCain.

And to the rest of the country....If you like becoming a socialist country, paying higher taxes, paying higher electricity bills, waiting in lines to get that great health care he's promising you..go ahead and vote for him. This is classic double-speak. On one hand, Obama is trying to appease the global warming crowd, and by trying to re-state what he said originally, he's trying to make happy the coal industry folks. Barrack, you can't have it both ways my man. Say what you mean, and mean what you say.

Study Revolations in the Bible! There is strong evidence that he is the Anti-Christ, or atleast an agent of the Devil. Look at the signs: - Socialism - Wealth redistribution - Civilian security squad, ie. Hitlers SS - Musim ties - Highly suspect associations with other agents of Satan, ie. Ayers, Wright - Polished speaker to the point of hypnotic - Favors abortion on demand including partial birth. A vote for Obama is a vote to surrender your freedom. With that said, peer pressure is very high when you are in a fenzied crowd all chanting Obama mantras. However when that curtain in the voting booth closes no one can see you so you have one last opportunity to do the right thing and keep Obama out. You can always rejoin the crowd outside the polling place and continue the chants knowing you did your part to save this country. Pray earnestly before you vote for guidance. If you don't believe in prayer you have made my point!!!!!!!!!!!!

"OOO Something 'negative' about Obama for me to jump on and sound like a BIG IDIOT!!!!!" McCain said essentially the same thing as Obama. At http://presidentialprofiles2008.org/McCain/tab2.html in his statement about global warming and energy he says, "I support a national greenhouse gas emission cap and trade regimen that includes responsible emission limits and allows market forces to determine how best to meet them. Such a regimen will provide a decisive economic incentive for power producers to maximize the capture of carbon emissions. Clearly, a utility that builds a new coal plant without factoring in the inevitable curbs on carbon emissions necessary to combat climate change or the market opportunities of limiting such emissions would be doing a disservice both to their customers and stockholders. Accordingly, I believe that new coal plants should be constructed in a manner that is capture-ready, and can accommodate the retrofit of this technology as it advances."

Newsbusters made this up. (This link from the SF Chronicle's Website explains it: http://tinyurl.com/5bvumq.) There is no hidden audio -- the Chronicle made the actual interview public earlier this year. Even Hillary knew about it. Palin just proved how gullible she is again by taking something as gospel without even checking its authenticity. In fact, in the real interview, Obama said the idea of getting rid of coal-fired plants is "an illusion." (And he's right -- there's no way America can realistically eliminate coal from our current energy plan; it's just too vital.) I suppose the McCain campaign and the RNC are getting more and more desperate ... and I don't blame them. The poll numbers are thoroughly depressing for the senator from Arizona (whom I supported back in 2000).

Posted by: MrObvious on Nov 2, 2008 at 10:06 PM
This along with Pelosi commenting how she'd like to see gas reach 6 bucks a gallon in order to encourage all of us to get rid of our gas guzzlers reveals the hijackers of the Democratic Party for what they are. They want control and they don't care who they bankrupt in order to have it, including me and you along with the Coal Power Plants.

Posted by: Ben on Nov 2, 2008 at 10:06 PM
My biggest concern about the economy is energy & jobs. People are willing and wanting to work, however, I fear that if Obama is elected we will see the unemployment rate really spike. His energy policies are going to carry over to worsening our economy. We really can't afford that now. He made a similar statement, essentially stating that we need to raise the cost of gas to change peoples behavior.

Posted by: Ryan on Nov 2, 2008 at 10:04 PM
Why don't you read the entire interview before you jump to conclusions. He was saying that we need to invest in newer technologies to produce clean coal instead of dirty coal so your children and grandchildren can breathe clean air instead of the soot produced by old coal plants. Make sure you read entire quotes before you make decisions. The right wing groups will take anything out of context to show Obama in a bad light.

I have been calling the news desk at TV stations in Huntington, Columbus, Richmond, Charlottesville, Charlotte, and Denver. I called Channel 13, they would not air the story. If coal is going to be in our future, we need to implement state of the art clean burning technology. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd prefer our skies not be filled with smog and filth like China's.

Only someone lacking intelligence would so totally misconstrue the process of cap and trade - Or McCain parrots that make something up out of whole cloth and then huff and puff about it. It won't work. I daresay that GWB arrived in DC with more bluster and less intellect that McCain has, and his last 8 years have been pitiful. His nation and all the citiznes in it have suffered for his sliming and lying campaigns. I believe McCain will be censured when he returns to the Senate - his lies and cowardice to have surrogates say them while he denies it are that blatant. If this is the way McCain thinks he can win, God help us all... No one wins this way.

Posted by: jerryd on Nov 2, 2008 at 09:25 PM
Why put this up since McCain does the same thing!! Coal is the most destructive fuel from mining that destroys large amounts of land and all the water downstream, wells, ect. It should pay it's cost instead of it's clean up, health problems in my, your income tax. WE should pay for the damage we cause shouldn't we? It's these subsidies on coal, oil both direct, indirect that kept RE from being used. With this Carbon tax evens the playing field. Why new coal plants will bankrupt companies that build them is they will have to compete with RE like solar thermal, wind, tidal/river gens all now cost less to build than coal plants and you don't have to buy fuel. So before you put up such wrong inflammatory headlines, at least read the article!! jerryd

Many voters are too dense to study Obama outside of what the media propoganda machines feed them, and yes the media has outed themselves as biased. One of Obama’s smartest tactics was pushing his people to vote early and often Chicago-style before they wise up to his plans for “Change”. The McCain backers don't need Obama Economics 099 (a remedial class for Kool-Aid Drinking Obamatrons). The course description starts: “No Text book distributed to students. All questions regarding corporate financial must be answered “Private industry willl be bankrupted by taxes, restrictive production controls, and government mandated market pricing and distribution. Assets will be appropriated by the national government where former workers will be rehired at wage-rates determined by the State.” Thanks Comrades!! The election, & subsequent reelection of President Bush is living proof of this theory. I put forth that anyone who truly believes the right wing's out-right pack of lies about Obama like: "He's a terrorist", or "he's out to bankrupt the coal industry", or that the average American will pay more taxes under his announced plan," or whatever... Obama wants tougher gun laws. Hitler took guns away from the Germans. Hitler formed the Hitler Jugend. Obama has already formed the Obama Youth. Hitler shut down the media...Obama has already taken away media opportunities from media outlets that do not go along with him. It's scary out there. Be careful.

Obama is explaining how clean coal will be achieved .. through a charge for greenhouse gases and other polutants ... just like every other source of energy. McCain has a similar program. All sources will be on an equal playing field - capitalist principles will control. Incidentally - nuclear is the biggest threat to coal production. The recording has clearly been edited - removing a passage.

Posted by: Jerry on Nov 2, 2008 at 09:20 PM
WHat about the increase in the price of electricity Obama's scheme will cause? Existing coal powered power plants will also be forced to pay those huge greenhouse gas taxes as well. Obama and the Democrats seem to want to destroy our economy with $5.oo gasoline and now huge power bills. Hopefully Pennsylvania will wake up from their Obama stupor and see the hand writing on the wall. Lots of unemployed coal miners will be the result.

Posted by: Fred on Nov 2, 2008 at 09:16 PM
This is one of the sillier attacks of the campaign, and Fox News has already pointed out its errors. Obama, like McCain, advocates reduction in CO2 emissions via clean coal technology. Anyone listening to the audiotape (which is cut and spliced) will hear no plan to bankrupt the coal industry, but only to make the construction of new coal-fired plans prohibitively expensive if they don't utilize technology to reduce carbon emissions. There is no mention of punitive measures directed against existing facilities. Almost every scientist familiar with climate change would endorse that view as a minimum requirement.

Posted by: sarah on Nov 2, 2008 at 09:14 PM
I don't understand why this is considered such an outrageous quote from Obama. If there are fines in place for polluting, and someone pollutes and is required to pay those fines, then of course he should have to pay those fines. And yes, he might go bankrupt if he continues to pollute. Here's what he could have said: "If someone wants to drive 20 mph in his car all the time, that's fine, but he's gonna get a bunch of speeding tickets and eventually go bankrupt." Is that a problem? http://www.CoupByMemo.com http://www.McLemon.com

This is the same crowd to which he was speaking when he said we cling to our religion and guns. He hasn't even darkened the door of West Virginia during his campaign. He's only sent in "Blo-Jo" Biden for one visit. Get a grip on what the Obama strategy is built around -- saying what different segments of American society want to hear. I sincerely hope the people in WV and surrounding states take this to heart and send Obama back to organize communities in Chicago, or Indonesia, or wherever he was born.

At least he can say present without a telaprompter.

I am glad I didn't vote early now. Obama has changed everything and the only thing good about this is if I loose my job mining I will get a bigger tax relief or probably not because they have changed that to if you don't have a job you wont get nothing but maybe if they imposed my job being eliminated by them it wont matter but I doubt it. I see why he wanted everybody to vote early because he knew the truth would be revealed...what a lier he is.

Barack Obama is a megalomaniac. How this man managed to get so close to the presidency is truly frightening and beyond anything I would ever have imagined. It's like a bad dream. Pray for John McCain.

Charlie: Believe it. Here it is from the transcript. "What I've said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else's out there. I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year. So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted."

...& how are ya gonna like the $10K/car Gore-tax on US made cars?

Posted by: Flyoverman on Nov 2, 2008 at 08:46 PM
It should be noted that in his laundry list of energy sources in his energy policy was "clean coal." Remember when Biden "gaffed" for saying no new coal plants? Turns out he was telling the hidden truth. Bottom line, OBAMA LIED.

Posted by: michael on Nov 2, 2008 at 08:43 PM
I guess we now know why the press has said he was having trouble "closing the deal". He's lying and everyone thought that was the case. Now we know--just in time!

thanks television 3 for covering this issue. unfortunately many news organizations are not as fair or unbiased. this is further proof he is the ultimate politician = he says what he needs to, where he needs to and how he needs to get voters believing in him and his empty promises. how can any local worker in the coal and related industries vote for a man who openly plans to bankrupt and industry?? all workers (coal, railroad, energy and barge) should look past their union affiliations if they are interested in long-term job security.

McCain and Obama both support cap and trade policies to encourge new coal technology that will reduce/eliminate emmissions. Their policies are very similar... Obama proposes to reach emissions limits and 100% auctioning of credits to raise more money in investments into new coal technology. Sourewatch.org has information on both candidates stances on coal -- take a look and you'll find them to be extremely similar. McCain and Obama are both against MTR/VF surface mining. McCain and Obama are both pro-market incentives and regulations to encourage "clean" coal development. The McCain camp is using this soundbite to drum up votes in the final days, despite how similar their plans are.

spread the wealth, bankrupt the coal industry, civilian terror force, the fairness doctrine....sounds a lot like Hugo Chavez doesn't it?

Posted by: Andy2 on Nov 2, 2008 at 08:35 PM
Let me see - Obama says something back in January and the McCain supporters use it in November to try to scare voters away. Haven't we seen this movie a thousand times already? The McCain folks can only say how they're different by trying to knock down their opponent, lies and distortions no problem.

Posted by: Apotu on Nov 2, 2008 at 08:31 PM
His statement is correct. He's making a comment about polluting the atmosphere, not so much about causing bankruptcy. Are you saying you *want* more pollution in the air, and that you don't want to fine those who don't care about the pollution?

Posted by: miner4mccain on Nov 2, 2008 at 08:30 PM
obamas campaign in already trying to talk their way out of this one just like all the other two faced comments he and biden have made over the last few months. what is it going to take before the american people see through the lies?

Posted by: We The People on Nov 2, 2008 at 08:30 PM
Hey, WSAZ(What says) you also let the fact be known that John McCain have the same opion about coal? I leave it to you.

Posted by: Ed on Nov 2, 2008 at 08:24 PM
Look at this point only a masochist would vote for Obama. The man has shown that he obviously hates America and his policy are a recipe for utter disaster. How did the Democratic party allow such a far-left kook to be nominated for President?

Posted by: Paulrevere on Nov 2, 2008 at 08:22 PM
Hope most of you mine workers didn't vote early. You may regret it. Cecil Roberts must have egg on his face for sure. No one can be America's president saying they are going to bankrupt a national industry of any kind.

Posted by: davidcook on Nov 2, 2008 at 08:17 PM
WHAT?how could this be? the umwa is supporting obama. this just shows that the umwa would support anyone as long as they were a democrat, regardless of their policies. if you know anyone or you yourself work in the coal industry or your job is dependent on the coal industry, why would you vote for obama? he will do as he says in this story. he needs californias delegates more than west virginias to win this election and will do what he needs to win them. i believe that manchin, rockefeller, bird and rahall have sold out the people of wv with their support for obama. joe is bragging about how well wv is doing right now, imagine it without coal. where will we be after obama? think before you vote!!!

Posted by: Working in WV on Nov 2, 2008 at 08:13 PM
Seriously. Does the average West Virginian need to hear any more? First it was Biden with his negative comments about coal fired plants, and now it's Obama. And they all say it was taken out of context. Honestly, which "context" would it be better in. I agree we definitely need some new ideas but Obama doesn't have them. He'll tax the American companies to the limit until they either go out of business or go overseas and expand social programs (redistribution of wealth). If you live in WV, you better think long and hard when you cast your vote. If I depended on coal for a living I would think which party has gone on record AGAINST the coal industry. Democrats.

Things the republican campaign say have a way of twisting to fit their needs just like this it is her words saying he is comfortable with a power plant going broke. He is saying with the amount the power companies are charged or fined NOW under the Bush administration could only bankrupt them NOT saying his policies would do this. Obama would never say something that he would do would cause such an event. Hes running for president no way he would say something like that, not even a nice try on this one. This twisting & lying is such a big turn off just like the rest of their hogwash we have had to endure the last 8 yrs.

Posted by: Fish on Nov 2, 2008 at 08:07 PM
The campaign comment about transition does not address Obamas original statement. He was very clear about his desire to destroy the coal industry. Marxism is upon us.

Posted by: Dave on Nov 2, 2008 at 07:58 PM
I'll help McCain beat him in Florida. You help McCain beat him in West Virginia.

Posted by: mike on Nov 2, 2008 at 07:57 PM
Seems like he saves a lot of his interesting comments for when he's in San Francisco....Isn't that where he said we cling to guns and our God?

Posted by: sDee on Nov 2, 2008 at 07:54 PM
There is even more to what Obama promised to his liberal SF base in that interview. He intends to let the cost of coversion from coal and natural gas. There is much we do not know about Obama. http://www.poligazette.com/2008/11/02/obama-ill-cause-energy-prices-to-skyrocket/

Posted by: MrObvious on Nov 2, 2008 at 07:51 PM
Gotta luv it! The more you learn about Obama the more you realize why he urged everyone to vote early! He knew that the longer the people waited to vote, the more his past would sneak up to bite him in the buttocks. If anyone votes for this guy, they have to be nuts.
