COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio voters today rejected a proposed $600
million casino -- the fourth time plans for expanded gambling in
the state have been turned down since 1990.

Voters approved a new payday lending law that cuts the annual
percentage rate that lenders can charge to 28 percent and limits
the number of loans customers can take to four per year. It is
among the strictest laws in the country.

In early unofficial returns, the gambling issue was defeated 62
percent to 38 percent. Support for the payday lending law was at 66
percent.

Supporters of Issue 6 bet that voters would think more about
Ohio's economic problems than their previous opposition to casinos
and gambling. The state in August recorded its highest unemployment
rate in 16 years at 7.4 percent.

Well as I sit here and type it has been just been 8 days since issue 5 passed and already 1 of the payday loans building has been destroyed in Chesapeake and those 4 people that worked there are now unemployed. Also 1 payday loan building has not even opened since the 4th of this month.Their employees haven't worked for 8 days and we all know that if you don't work you don't get paid.So as this story goes on just in the tri-state area alone those steel mills aren't the only businesses that are out so are these people.Just today Ohio announces that the state is running low on unemployment funds.Seems to me that these folks that voted for issue 5 put the cart before the horse this time.I am Mark Thompson, proud, patriotic,God fearing Ohio raised, and this state has about gone to the dogs with the ignorant government that we have ruling over us.So thank you all that voted against issue 6 and for issue 5.Our state is in for some bad economic times.

I think that issue 6 is a good idea. Many people say know but they dont understand when the DHL Airpark shuts down then everone is gonna lose there jobs and the casino will give people the oppertunity to get the job back so i think voters are wrong for saying know because they dont understand how many people will be without jobs in wilmington Ohio. I am jeffrey hurd and this is my oppion about issue 6 so if u want just try to prove me wrong

Posted by: Jeffrey Hurd on Nov 10, 2008 at 10:56 AM
I think the casino should have passed because people need jobs because the DHL Airpark is shutting down so with the casino people think it is a bad idea but more jobs for ohio would really help us out. this is my oppion feel free to prove me wrong

Posted by: GHS on Nov 8, 2008 at 12:27 PM
Why do those for the casinos think that people gambling their money away is the only way the state can make money? Just as others have stated, there are always jobs at restaurants and stores, so the argument that people won't have jobs w/o a casino is bull. Why can't the state do something with a positive image? It's greed.

10% per $100 for how long? Do you know what APR means? I am surprised it's only 391%

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 7, 2008 at 07:38 AM
For all of yo who are upset that these issues didn't go your way, did you vote? You have just as much say as I do. Evidently most people disagree with you. Have you ever thought that you may not be right 100% of the time?

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 6, 2008 at 07:57 PM
All I have to say is thank you to everyone who voted yes on issue 5. Thank you for being ignorant and not realizing the truth behind this issue. Lowering this so called 391% APR to 28% has nothing to do with this. If you voted yes you obviously have never done a payday loan because nobody EVER gets charge 391% apr. There is only a 10% fee per $100 borrowed (in florida). If you are in hard times and you need a few hundred dollars to fix your car or pay your electric bill, for instance $300, i would much rather be charged $30 than the $30 per transaction my bank charges for overdraft. I personally have never done a payday loan but I work for a payday loan company. That payday loan company is in FLORIDA and because of you people who decided to vote YES have basically put me out of a job. You ask how?? Because my corporate office is in Ohio and you have offically shut my place of work down. Again thank you for being so ignorant.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 6, 2008 at 05:22 PM
I was once stuck in the payday loan cycle. Not because I was frivolous with my money,or irresponsibly using the payday loans, but if I borrow $500 and have to pay back $575, then more than likely I have to go get at least some of it back. I am glad the issue passed.

I am sorry that the casino issue did not pass. I spent some time in Wilmington as a contractor at Alkermes, and I loved the area. I hope that the folks that are going to lose their jobs at ABX find some other means of employment, there isn't many other opportunities in the Wilmington area.

good job ohio!!! in voting down the casino and the passing of the bill on payday loans.... and as for work there is work out there if u go looking. cant sit at home and expect a job to come knock on the door.. and as for welfare i think we need a time limit on it.. that would do away with the generations after generations being on welfare. just a sign of how lazy american people are getting. as for the president i hope he brings change look what the bush era got us.. as for all that want to say ohio done a poor job of voting that's fine if u live in ohio but if u live in another state why dont u just mind your own business and take care of your state....

Posted by: soccermom2 on Nov 6, 2008 at 09:39 AM
I feel that welfare should be for those who have a job, but are not making enough to make it on their own, but for those who are just to lazy and have been like this for generations, I have know sympothy for them...they are the ones who want everything handed to them and the ones who need it the most ppl. think bad of them. and like someone arlready said, walmart and others places are always hiring....look in the paper ppl. are always asking for workers, but most ppl. are to lazy, then want to sit back and complain....

I'm from athens but was raised in the southern mississippi area & lived in louisiana for 3 yrs,I would have voted yes on 6 for casino only if the money was given to do wise things & in the right hands ,like fix the roads, schools to update this place somehow, they have been successfully using the money through casino,s in Biloxi/Vicksburg,Shreveport,LA FOR YEARS! where i lived when i was newly married ,it was an enjoyable place to live then,& i think it is possible that simply if we use our money wisely Ohio can be an enjoyable place just by not being so small minded about doing new things to improve our economy.I don't gamble & it never was a problem & you don't have to put smoking or drinking in a casino to run it, all OHIOANS HAVE TO DO IS TO BE RESPONSIBLE ABOUT HOW THE CASINO RUNS,LIKE HOTEL/CASINO RESORTS W/RESTURANTS & SALONS,WOULD'NT THAT BE NICE?

There are so many comments that are so very negative on here. We in Ohio do work and want to work im 39 and have worked since I was 15 and have a degree but still in this area I dont make enough money to pay health insurance on my children and my employer well they want 300 month and jobs are hard to find so I stay but what would I have done all these years without the healthy start program that insured my children no I dont get food stamps or cash but they have had the insurance for years now and im thankful for that...sad though that my income is in a poverty level when I have been with the same company for 14 years and its a medical facility...This area needs companys to come in and build the economy up here in Lawrence County..Its very sad that people will lose their jobs at the payday lending places but they are bad places and the trouble that they can cause people is great I know I have been to them myself and its a rut you go in you never come out of...Prayer is what we need

Posted by: lisa on Nov 5, 2008 at 09:10 PM
Well I am glad Issue 6 lost. Since you people in Ohio think Obama is so great let him find you all jobs... Who needs more drugs and gambling.. We have enough to worry with now.. Thanks... buy the way Mcdonalds and wal-mart is always hiring....

Posted by: Laura on Nov 5, 2008 at 08:40 PM
Every state needs to put a stop to payday lenders. Good job Ohio!!!

Posted by: Lynn on Nov 5, 2008 at 08:37 PM
I don't live in Ohio and I'm glad I don't... I don't want the government telling me what I can do with my money that I work very hard for and I can't believe Ohio voters voted yes on issue 5. How is payday loans any worse than pawn shops? What about credit card companies and banks???????? The banks charge 30.00 for bounced checks whether you are short 200.00 or 2.00, credit card companies charge 30.00 if you are late with your payment then if that puts you over your limit they charge you another 30.00 (maybe you all need to vote to stop all pawn shops, banks, and credit card companies from doing business in Ohio)Then you can support even more people on welfare......Yeah that will help the Ohio economy!!!!!!!!

Posted by: jennifer on Nov 5, 2008 at 08:22 PM
passing issue 5 will put 6000 people out of a job not to mention it will kill the economy even more!!!i work for one of these "evil" places, let me tell you only people that have no regards for themselves abuse the system and get themselves into trouble. for most people it's a means to an end. i make 11.50 and hour and can't afford to keep my head above water.no it's not because i live beyond my means, it's because everything is so high in price and all utility bills are going up. not to mention i have 5 kids that i'm still raising, an elder gentleman who has nobody else to keep him safe and a husband who is fighting socisl security for his own money because of his illnesses. we charge $15 every hundred, the bank will carge up to $40 for being .20 in the hole. so how are we outrageous?now your financial information goes to the government and you have to pay for a financial literacy up to $250. how's that for helping the people?6000 jobs people, what do they do now?

Posted by: we'll see on Nov 5, 2008 at 08:11 PM
Well since most lending institutions make it on less than 28% interest if these places cant then let them leave we dont need them.Bet they dont close as fast as they said they would but if they do we will be better off in the long run I hear about all the jobs that will be lost there are 14 of these places within 20 miles of me and they only employ 21 people all together but in the meantime they have ruined several lives and put many people into debt that they can never get out of causing trouble between husbands and wives which lead to divorce and a swelling of the welfare ranks so are they really needed I dont think so

Posted by: Brian on Nov 5, 2008 at 06:38 PM
Issue 5 allows payday lenders to take advantage from people who find themselves in a rut and need to borrow money. Ohioans decided to protect their people and not allow lenders to take advantage of the weak. The casino decided to use vague wording on their contract which could possibly allow the casino to not pay taxes. In their contract they state they will pay "up to" 30%. Maybe Ohians would have felt better if it stated "will pay 30% tax." The casino knew this. We Ohians like to work. But at the same time we won't be taken advantage of and we protect our own. Good Job Ohio!!

Hey,for all that made a comment on welfare. Let me tell you something I work hard for what I have but I still have to get help from the state because what I make is not enough and I work in EMS and I pay into the welfare system. Some of us still need help and not all are lazy that get help.

Posted by: Meigs on Nov 5, 2008 at 05:01 PM
to Dreama: I couldn't agree more with what you said and couldn't have said it better myself. And I agree that welfare, food stamp, etc should be used to help those that NEED it for a brief time, but the truth of the matter is, the ones that do NEED help occationally, cannot get help. I've been there. My husband and I both work, but at one point we NEEDED help and could not get it. I just don't see the fairness in hard working people haveing to live pay to pay and scraping the bottom of the pot to survive and the ones sponging on welfare have new cars, homes, cable, cell phones, and all the luxuries that we can't afford.

Posted by: Ohio? on Nov 5, 2008 at 03:11 PM
Ohio voted to kill payday lenders (loss of jobs.) And voted against a casino (increase in jobs). Are people form Ohio against work or what?

Posted by: Josie on Nov 5, 2008 at 11:27 AM
Did I read the ballet wrong or wasnt that gambling for just 1 area and not the whole state? As for the pres comment, that is probably in our future, if we make it thru.

Posted by: John on Nov 5, 2008 at 11:17 AM
Yeah because Kanawha county is just having a terrible time with that new casino in town. The misconceptions of casinos people have instilled in them are ridiculous.

Posted by: KRAKEE on Nov 5, 2008 at 09:52 AM
If you don't like gambling, don't gamble. Why is it that people in this country always have to tell other people what they can'y do just because that person just doesn't want to do the same?

Posted by: Momof2 on Nov 5, 2008 at 09:48 AM
just like the lazy ppl. in Lucasville, you don't want to work, you want everything handed to you....message to TY

Posted by: degreg on Nov 5, 2008 at 09:33 AM
gregg, just because u and your puritan friends dont want gambling doesnt mean other people feel the same. they should have let ohio vote from the argosy casino in indiana to seal the deal.

Posted by: Joshua Fisher on Nov 5, 2008 at 09:12 AM
I'm so glad that issue 6 failed, I don't like how people spend all of their money gambling, and then expect us to do something about it. On the down side, people who don't have jobs needed issue 6 to pass.

Posted by: Gina on Nov 5, 2008 at 09:10 AM
To Ty's response, I hope you are being sarcastic and are a hard working person. We do need jobs in Ohio and less welfare. Maybe all of the welfare people could have applied for a job at the gambling place and then get some respect from the working people. I along with many other hard working people are tired of supporting all the welfare people who do not deserve to get it. I bet they are using their checks to go out of state and blow them gambling anyway.

Posted by: Mark on Nov 5, 2008 at 09:09 AM
After four tries, hopefully the gambling proponents have gotten the idea that Ohio does not want casino gambling here!!!

Posted by: Julie on Nov 5, 2008 at 08:57 AM
A stand against gambling...who is going to stand up for the people who want to work and support their families. A casino is just like anything else...if you dont gamble simply dont go in and leave everyone else alone...MIND YOUR OWN! And for the president...I think we need to look at how our economy was when Bill Clinton, a democrate, was in office. Then take a look at what happened since George W Bush has been in office. I think it is time for CHANGE!!

Posted by: Kristin on Nov 5, 2008 at 08:12 AM
I'm so glad that voters voted to pass issue 5! I'm glad I won't lose my job and that our customers won't have anymore worries.

Posted by: ABX Worker on Nov 5, 2008 at 07:55 AM
Thanks Ohio. I'll be losing my job as soon as DHL pulls the plug, and now I have nothing to look forward to for work. No one is wanting to hire these days. Dont want to gamble? Then dont go. This couldve saved the area from huge amounts of unemployement.

Posted by: Larry on Nov 5, 2008 at 07:27 AM
Wow! Well I put my vote in but I guess it wasnt enough. Well maybe one day the voters of Ohio will realize that voting against things like this will drive up the already high unemployment rate.

Posted by: Michele on Nov 5, 2008 at 07:05 AM
THIS IS THE FIRST ELECTION,THAT CLEARLY SHOWS THAT OUR VOTES COUNT! SO !#$%#$$%#AMIT VOTE NEXT TIME, & YES WE HOPFULLY STILL HAVE OUR FREEDOM IN THE USA!!!!!!OR IS THIS STILL THE USA?

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 5, 2008 at 06:57 AM
Im so glad that issue 5 passed its time these places realize they hurt people not help them...Thank the Lord and people I know first hand because I have been going to them for years and I know I need them at times but that interest and fees was not fair to people...

Posted by: Dreama on Nov 5, 2008 at 06:54 AM
I certainly appreciate the sarcastic comment on welfare, food stamp, and medical cards! I am so sick and tired of lazy people who won't work. Now, I don't have a problem with people having assistance during a brief period to help them deal with some hardship. But, I am TOTALLY AGAINST this being their way of life that is passed on for generations and generations. What ever happened to working hard for what we have & being proud of jobs well done? It amazes me how people are perfectly content to live on assistance and make no effort to better themselves. Some of these people abuse the system so badly, I am almost embarrased for them. Example: use the EMS for chronic headaches, cold symptoms, make ER visits for stubbed toe, swollen tongue due to getting it pierced yesterday, a pregnancy test, etc..They abuse the welfare system because these costs aren't coming out of their pockets. This allows them to have 'their money' for cigarettes, beer, etc. I say let these people WORK!

IF THEY DONOT WANT PAYDAYLOANS WHY DO WE HAVE PAWN SHOPS?

Posted by: Ty on Nov 5, 2008 at 04:42 AM
WE DON'T NEED JOBS IN OHIO! We have welfare, food stamps and medical cards!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 4, 2008 at 11:10 PM
OH WOW IN 4 MORE YEARS A THIS GUY FROM RUSSIA IS GOING TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT OF USA AND I BET HE WINS TO

Posted by: Gregg on Nov 4, 2008 at 11:05 PM
Thank you voters of Ohio for taking a stand against gambling. It is a shame Kanawha and Ohio/Brooke Counties here in West Virgnia didn't do the same. Voting against gambling was the right thing to do!
