ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - Former West Virginia Gov. Bob Wise is the new chairman of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards' Board of Directors.

Wise is president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and author of "Raising the Grade: How High School Reform Can Save Our Youth And Our Nation." He succeeds former Georgia Gov. Roy E. Barnes as chairman.

The Arlington-based nonprofit announced Wise's selection Monday.

President and Chief Executive Officer Joseph A. Aguerrebere called Wise an education reformer.

The organization develops teaching standards and administers the voluntary National Board Certification system, which certifies teachers who meet the standards.
