COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio voters have opened their wallets to veterans, easily approving bonuses of up to $1,000 for those who served in the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan or Iraq.

Voters approved a constitutional amendment Tuesday authorizing $200 million in bonds to be issued to pay for the bonuses, which will amount to $100 a month up to $1,000.

With 44 percent of precincts reporting, Issue 1 is passing 73 percent to 27 percent.

Veterans who served outside war zones during those conflicts will get $50 a month up to $500. Family members may also apply for a death benefit of $5,000, which will be based on an application process.

This marks the first time the state will pay bonuses for a war that hasn't ended, but Ohio has paid similar veterans' bonuses throughout history.

The folks who don't feel Ohio can't afford the bonus (however large or small it may be) probably thinks you made enough money from the $100 billion per month the US spent in Iraq over the past several years. Oh that's right, Blackwater, Halliburton and KBR received most of that, which the anti-vets who posted here, probably did and still do support. Or maybe you should have held on to your portion of the $1.7 trillion dollar tax cut from the early Bush years. Oh that's right...military pay didn't quite meet the level to receive the tax cut. I would have no problem with Ohio doubling the amount to veterans, maybe take it from the initial revenue from the casino's.

I served in iraq, I served in bosnia, I served during september 11th, , I was a veteran that was digging through trash cans at night to find cans to make money to feed my kids, I could not find a job that paid the rent, paid for electric water and daycare, i served from the time I was 19 to almost 28 years old. I was desperate for help and could not find any, i saw people at welfare offices that help veterans, all I got from them was the date and locations of job fairs, that I could not get to or was not qualified for the jobs it was offering. Ohio , help your veterans by checking up on them see what is happening to them. help them transition help them get a job they can be proud of again, a little bit of free money is not the answer, we, or should i say I did not want a hand out , just A HAND GETTING UP. I am employed and o.k. now, but it harder and longer than it should have been for a veteran who served almost 10 years.
