THIS IS A PRESS RELEASE FROM THE OFFICE OF UNITED STATES SENATOR ROBERT BYRD.
Washington, DC – As Senator Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.) continues to convalesce at his home as a result of a fall last week and a minor infection, well wishes in the form of phones calls and letters have poured into his Capitol Hill and West Virginia offices. The good wishes come from Byrd’s constituents in West Virginia and people all across the political spectrum:
Former First Lady Nancy Reagan was one of Byrd’s well-wishers. In a February 28th letter, Mrs. Regan wrote:
“Well, I guess you and I may not see eye-to-eye on everything, but we have one more thing in common now! I was sorry to hear you had also fallen, and glad to hear you, too, managed to do so without breaking anything.”
“I’m glad to be out of the hospital after my own mishap, and hope you will also be home again soon. But be careful!”
And on the opposite side of the political spectrum, his long-time colleague, Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), also wrote on February 28th:
“I was so sorry to hear of your fall, and I wanted you to know that you’re very much in my thoughts and prayers at this time. I send my best wishes to you, and I hope you’re well on the road to a full recovery.”
Kennedy added in handwriting in the margin of the letter, “Get well – we need you.”
Byrd remains in close contact with his Senate staff and as President Pro Tempore of the Senate continues to faithfully carry out one of his duties – signing enrolled bills before they are sent to the President for his signature or veto.
