THIS IS A PRESS RELEASE FROM THE CAMPAIGN TO RE-ELECT SPIKE MAYNARD.
Charleston, W.Va.— Surrounded by supporters from across the Mountain State, West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Elliott E. “Spike” Maynard announced today that he will again seek the office of Supreme Court Justice in West Virginia.
In announcing his intentions, Maynard said, “After more than 25 years on the bench, I have found that there is no substitute for sound judgment, common sense, and respect for the rule of law. I try to exhibit each of those attributes every day and in every decision.” Maynard said he is proud of his years of service and looks forward to continuing his service on behalf of the people of the great state of West Virginia.
State Treasurer John Perdue spoke calling Maynard “a model jurist.” “Justice Maynard cares for this state, cares for its people, and has distinguished himself as one of our state’s great legal minds,” Perdue added.
Justice Maynard was born in Williamson in Mingo County, West Virginia. In 1976, he was elected Prosecuting Attorney of Mingo County and was re-elected in 1980. In 1981 Governor John D. Rockefeller, IV, appointed him as Judge of the Thirtieth Judicial Circuit, a post to which he was elected and re-elected. In November 1996, Maynard was elected to the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. He served as Chief Justice of West Virginia’s highest court in 2000 and 2004.
