CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - As West Virginia's revenue picture gets worse, some lawmakers want to give the governor the ability to institute unpaid furloughs for state employees as a cost-saving measure.
Senate Finance Chairman Walt Helmick says the bill, introduced Monday, is just a precaution in case the state's budget tips over into deficit.
Helmick says the economy continues to worsen, and the state should have every possible tool at its disposal to save on costs.
At least nine states have either instituted or proposed unpaid furloughs for public employees this year.
West Virginia's budget has avoided the deficits faced by other states, but the last two months' revenue projections have been off by a combined $92.2 million.
