CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Gov. Joe Manchin says the Legislature's weeklong extended term, which ended Tuesday after producing a budget and 15 pieces of legislation passed in special session, was an impressive show of consensus.
After the disappointment of the regular session, which ended in April with more than half his bills failing to pass, Manchin wanted to bring both houses of the Legislature together to work quickly during the special term.
Flanked by House Speaker Rick Thompson, D-Wayne, and Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin, D-Logan, Manchin said at the Capitol Thursday that the 15 special session bills - seven of which were his - were products of that team effort.
He highlighted measures on economic development, alternative energy sources and mental health care as particularly significant.
